1931 - MLB Year In Review
The season of 1931 provided a cakewalk for the Washington Senators, finishing a strong 16 games ahead of the Tigers and ending a 7-year drought. They had the lead by 13 1/2 games over Detroit and coasted the rest of the way. Charlie Root won 27 games and had an ERA of 2.84 to lead the way for the Senators. At the plate Washington was led by the league's MVP, Lou Gehrig, who batted .336 with 25 HRs and 113 RBIs. Dave Harris chipped in with 104 ribbies and scoring 109 times. George Uhle recorded 19 victories to help Root. The Detroit Tigers finished a distant second behind the bat of Chuck Klein, who led the AL in home runs with 31, and the junior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher award winner, Lefty Grove. Cleveland, who had sent Shoeless Joe Jackson packing to the Phillies in early June, finished in third place, a whopping 23 games behind the front running Senators. Paul Waner batted .342, third best in the AL, and Chick Hafey had 23 homers and drove in 104 runs to lead the Indians' attack.
The Cubs were leading the senior circuit by 3 1/2 games over the Giants as the schedule headed into September and clinched the NL title midway through the last week of the regular season. Babe Herman led the charge with 24 home runs and driving in 113 while Earl Averill led the majors in RBI with 115. Joe "Ducky" Medwick (.328-9-66) broke into the lineup and won the NL's Rookie of the Year award. Chicago was led on the mound by the NL's Outstanding Pitcher award winning Red Lucas, who won 21 games and had a 3.09 ERA. Mel Ott, Earl Combs and Hack Wilson helped provide the punch to the Giants' lineup and led New York to a second place finish, 5 games behind Chicago. In the World Series, the Cubs and Senators split the two games in Griffith Park with Chicago winning 2 of 3 at Wrigley to send the series back to our nation's capital. A six-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning against Washington's Eppa Rixey, broke open game six as the Cubs went on to win the game, 9-4, and the World Series, 4 games to 2. Code:

1932 - MLB Year In Review
With the Chicago Cubs in first place at the beginning of August something happened, they started to falter. Their lead slowly diminished down to a single game until near the end of the month and they were back up by 6 games over the Boston Braves when Labor Day rolled around. Babe Herman knocked in 74 runs to lead the charge. Earl Averill and Red Kress each chipped in by driving in 73 runs each. Larry Benton, who was acquired at the trade deadline, won 7 games to help the rotation that included Brandt, Mungo, Gray and Lucas. Red Lucas won 26 games to lead the majors in wins as he won the NL's Outstanding Pitcher Award.
Boston used the batting of Charlie Gehringer, Freddie Lindstrom, Don Hurst and Gene Moore to take second place, 7 games behind the Cubbies. The Giants slipped a notch down to third place on the bat of Mel Ott's 28 home runs and 97 RBIs, both second only to Babe Ruth in those categories. Brooklyn could only manage fourth place despite the hitting of the NL's MVP, Babe Ruth, who batted .317 to go along with his 37 homers and 106 RBIs. In the American League, Washington continued their dominating ways as they won 95 games, good enough for a 12-game bulge between them and the Cleveland Indians. The hitting of Del Harris and Lou Gehrig led the way for the league's best offense. The Indians, along with the St.Louis Browns, finished with an 83-71 record, tied for second place. Chick Hafey led the Indians' attack with a .317 batting average and a team-leading 88 RBIs. The World Series ended up being a rematch between the Senators and the defending champion Cubs. After splitting the first two games, Chicago took the next 2 of 3 games in Washington before heading back to the Windy City and taking game six, 1-0, to become the first NL team to win back-to-back World Series. 1933 - MLB Year In Review
Babe Ruth was there. So was Gehrig, Grove, Foxx, Terry, Cochrane, and Hubbell. They didn't all belong to the same team or league, but they, with several other prominent players, were assembled at Comiskey Park in Chicago on July 6, for the first All-Star Game. The idea for the game came from the dean of sportswriters, Grantland Rice. Baseball fans loved and embraced the idea by sending over 45,000 to watch the game. Millions of fans had fantasized about it but never even thought that it would become a reality. The game was to be a benefit to raise funds for the National Association of Professional Baseball Players. and it was an instant hit. The first home run in All-Star Game history was hit by Bill DeLancey for the American League All-Stars, who easily defeated their National League counterparts, 8-3.
In the regular business at hand, Washington once again won the American League pennant as they survived a 3-way race with Detroit and Philadelphia. The Senators' offense was led by the hitting of Lou Gehrig, who finished 3rd in average and 2nd in both homers and RBIs to capture the league's MVP award. The Detroit Tigers finished in second place, three games behind Washington, thanks to the pitching of Si Johnson and Lefty Grove. The Athletics, who finished four games behind the Senators, ended in third place thanks to the sparkling performance on the mound by Tom Zachary. Zachary led the junior circuit in both ERA and wins to capture the league's Outstanding Pitcher award. The Chicago White Sox, who had obtained both of the 1932 MVPs, Babe Ruth and Chuck Klein, during the offseason, couldn't make up for their massive pitching shortcomings and finished in seventh place, a distant 29 games behind the front running Senators. In the NL, the Chicago Cubs continued their domination over the league as they won the title by 11 games over both the Phillies and the Pirates. Earl Averill led the Cubbies' attack with 21 homers and 100 RBIs. Philadelphia finished in the tie for second place thanks to the hitting of Bill Terry, who led the league in average, and the pitching of Watty Clark, who was a 20 game winner. The World Series was another repeat matchup between the Senators and the Cubs. The Cubs, who had won games 3 & 4 to come back and tie the series at two games each, were outpitched in games 5 and 6, losing by the scores of 2-1 in both games and lost the series to Washington, 4 games to 2. Charlie Root led the way for the Senators with wins in games 2 and 5 as well as Del Harris, who belted two homers during the series. Code:

1934 - MLB Year In Review
Braves fans had a taste of first place for around 130 days during the season, while Pirates fans had only 12 days alone in the hallowed ground. Those 12 days all ended up being at the end as Boston held an 8-game lead heading into Labor Day and Pittsburgh caught them with 12 days to go. Two days later, the Pirates took a 2-game lead then fought the Braves right to the next-to-last day of the season when Pittsburgh was able to clinch it's first NL title in 28 years. Pittsburgh was lead by "The Beast", catcher Jimmy Foxx, who launched 33 homers and scored 115 runs. The pitching staff was led by Hal Schumacher, who won a league leading 21 games and finished third in ERA with 3.30. Schumacher was awarded the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher award for his efforts. The Boston Braves, led by Ripper Collins, finished in second place, 3 games behind. Ripper Collins finished first in average (.352), third in home runs (31) and second in RBI (127). The Chicago Cubs finished in third place, 9 games behind the front running Pirates, and had Earl Averill to thank for it. All Averill did was finish second in average (.350) and first in both home runs (36) and RBI (136) and received the MVP award for his efforts.
In the American League, the Athletics held a 3-game lead heading into Labor Day then held back the Yankees and the Indians to win their first AL title since 1914. Philadelphia's attack was led by young star Hank Greenberg, who finished third in the league in home runs (23) and tied for second in RBI (113). The New York Yankees finished in second place, 5 games behind the Mackmen, as slugger Hal Trosky finished second in homers (28) and tied for second in RBI (113). Lon Warneke was the star of the Pinstripers' mound corp as he led the AL in wins (24) and strikeouts (186) and was awarded the junior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher award. Chief Wahoo's bunch, the Cleveland Indians, finished strong to end up in third place, 9 games behind the Athletics, and were led by pitchers Clint Brown (19 wins) and Mel Harder (2.79 ERA). The Washington Senators, winners of the AL the last three seasons, totally collapsed and fell to a tie for sixth place, a distant 28 games behind Philadelphia, despite of the league's MVP, Lou Gehrig. Gehrig finished third in average (.332), first in homers (34) and fourth in RBI (107). In the World Series, Pittsburgh 1-2 punch on the mound, Schumacher and Bridges, won two games each as the Pirates brought home their first world's championship despite Hank Greenberg's effort (.400 avg, 1 hr) to try to carry the Athletics. The Athletics and the Pirates split the first two games in Philadelphia then Pittsburgh took the next two games at Forbes Field to take a commanding 3 games to 1 lead. Philadelphia, behind the pitching of Hallahan, forced the series back to Shibe Park by taking game #5 but Bridges's strong pitching in game #6 sealed the world's championship for the Bucs. Code:
