22nd June 2009

What a memorable series against the American League leading Cleveland Indians. Game 1 and 3 were decided by walk off home runs and even the maybe best pitcher in baseball Chuck Lofgren couldn't shut our offense down. But now back to everyday life to face the lowly Phillies.

25th June 2009 (Off-Day)

Trades:

The White Sox have sent SS Pedro Lopez (.288, 2 HR, 6 RBI) and minor league starting pitcher William Williams (0-3, 6.46 ERA - A) to the Marlins for cather Miguel Olivo (.209, 2 HR, 8 RBI) and minor league starter Elton Sloan (2-5, 4.66 ERA - A).

The always trade happy and awful Texas Rangers sent starting pitcher Josh Rupe (3-9, 6.59 ERA) to the Buffalo Blizzards (one of two teams with a record worse than the Rangers) for minor league pitcher Eric Young (2-1-2, 4.21 ERA - A). Young went 0-16 at AA level last season. Good fit for the Rangers.

We traded spot starter Aaron Cook (0-2, 7.20 ERA) to the Dodgers for minor league SS Kevin King (.323, 6 HR, 32 RBI - AA) and 3B Eduardo Perez (.326, 4 HR, 38 RBI - AA).
Cook would have been released anyway, so we got at least some prooven, but not spectacular minor leaguers for him.

Out winning streak stand now at 8 games, but I'm almost sure it will come to end at Turner Fielder. The Braves are a very good team who have a lot of pitching. Anyway out hot streak put the Astros 6.5 games behind us, so we should have the lead until the All-Star-Break.
Two open questions are discussed at the moment. Should we trade Gallardo even if he enjoys his best season of his career? The scouts doom his future. Rosario has been great since he was called up and Villanueva has too much potential to rot as long reliever. Or could Capuano (free agent) be the man out?
Johnny Estrada (.210, 1 HR, 21 RBI) is really running out of time. He has always be a lousy catcher, but now he even starts hitting like a pitcher. Henry Blanco (.238, 3 HR, 16 RBI) is a great in handling pitchers and is out every day catcher for the moment. But we are looking for another veteran who can hit, as prospect Nestor Corredor (.275, 2 HR, 21 RBI - AAA) is in my eyes not yet ready for big league pitchers.
Right field (Gross and Parraz) and 3B (Lowell and Gamel) production is increasing recently, so that we are not pressured to take any immediate actions at once.

As expected the Braves gave us a very hard time, taking two from three games. In game three our offense went nevertheless on a rampage. Next up are the Cardinals who are one game above .500, but still 10.5 games behind us. Its important to finish the next eleven games (all against NL Central opposition) positively.
The trade front is quiet for the moment, but a good offer could change that over night

Injury Report:

St. Louis
- 2B A. Blanco (3 months)

Game # 75 – Milwaukee [48-26] (D. Bush 8-3, 4.12 ERA) at St. Louis [38-37] (F. Garcia 6-3, 5.45 ERA)

SS C. Izturis - RF G. Gross - LF R. Braun - 1B P. Fielder - 2B O. Hudson - 3B M. Gamel - CF S. Victorino - C J. Estrada

Time: 2:48

C Johnny Estrada (.209, 1 HR, 22 RBI) hurt himself when celebrating one of his rare hits. He is DTD with a jarred neck. We put him on the DL, calling top prospect Nestor Corredor (.272, 2 HR, 21 RBI) up. We don't expect any offense from Corredor, but he could be one of the best defensive catchers in the game. If he does well, Estrada might soon be history.

Elsewhere:

Ex-Brewer
RF Kevin Mench (.363, 5 HR, 24 RBI) collected 5 hits when his Phillies lost 11-13 to the Braves.

Arizona C Miguel Montero (.291, 16 HR, 47 RBI) had a three home run game in a 6-3 win over San Diego.

3B Mike Lowell (.269, 6 HR, 34 RBI) signed a new one year contract worth $720,000. He will provide backup for the starting infielders and can also play every day if one of them should struggle.

We sent pitcher Francisco Rosario (3-4, 8.13 ERA) back to AAA-Nashville. Rosario didn't manage to repeat the form he showed in his two hitter in late spring. His roster spot will be taken by Manny Parra (8-4, 3.90 ERA - AAA), who gives us another option against lefties. Carlos Villanueva (4-2, 5.44 ERA) gets another shot as starter.
