August 2011 - Milwaukee Brewers
Manager and GM Fritsche

4th August 2011

Really ugly series against the Cubs and we just avoided to get swept. In game 2 we managed to blow a 8-0 run lead. Our lead is still at 16.5 games but we are close to .700 mark. Many games within the division left, so we shouldn't take anything for granted. Up next are the Astros who have only a battle for last place with the Blizzards going on.

12th August 2011

Atlanta pitcher Matt Harrison (11-7, 3.29 ERA) signed a three year contract extension worth $17,670,000.

Things went also bad against the Cubs and our yearly summer slump is reality. The playoffs still seems to be safe with a 15.5 game lead over Cincinnati, but I don't like our pitching at the moment at all. Now also Parra begins to struggle and closer González is the only sure bet in the bullpen. Maybe a three game homestand again struggling Charlotte helps?

Cold streak, crisis, not in mood to play baseball? The loss of the Charlotte series means we didn't win a series for 3 1/2 weeks despite playing mostly against rather average opposition. Not sure if we can turn things around against the Dodgers who are enjoying a fine season.

18th August 2011

Finally a good series again, and it was good to see that we could control such a dangerous team as the Dodgers with the bottom of our rotation. Charles Hill is still doing better than a supposed Nr 5 starter in his rookie season. Also António Cuarenta's bat comes finally around even if he has yet to hit his first big league homerun (he had 22 in 275 AAA AB's earlier this season). We once again face the quite hopeless Blizzards who nevertheless make a run for their first .400 + season in franchise history.

August 2011 - Milwaukee Brewers
Manager and GM Fritsche

19th August 2011

Free agent update:

Rickie Weeks
(.303, 19 HR, 69 RBI) wants a three-year contract worth well over $50,000,000. The owner allows us an offer of $30,000,000, what we won't do. Guess this means good-bye Rickie. Orlando Hudson (.232, 3 HR, 21 RBI) and Ian Snell (4-3, 3.89 ERA) also want too much for what they offer. Ryan Freel (.221, 1 HR, 13 RBI) can pick mushrooms in Wyoming next year, while we consider giving Frank Francisco (2-4-1, 3.57 ERA) a new contract.

Game # 122 – Buffalo [49-71] (J. Francis 6-7, 4.77 ERA) at Milwaukee [83-38] (B. Webb 15-3, 2.87 ERA)

Our lower level rookie team, the Arizona League Brewers finished their season with a 18-25 record. For the fifth time in a row below .500 and only good enough for 9th place. The team pitched very well (2.38 ERA), but didn't hit at all (.216). The whole team combined for 1 (!!!) homerun

The following players are promoted to our upper level
rookie team Helena for the final weeks of the season:

SP Howard Chamber (3-0, 1.78 ERA, 1.09 WHIP) - 20th round pick in 2010
SP Javier Rivera (4-0, 1.08 ERA, 0.66 WHIP) - 26th round pick in 2011

MR Eric Roberts (1-0-1, 0.66 ERA, 0.66 WHIP) - 19th round pick in 2010
MR Leonard Anderson (0-0-0, 2.21 ERA, 0.84 WHIP) - 17th round pick in 2011
MR Marc-Alexandre Hamel (1-3-3, 2.78 ERA, 0.97 WHIP) - 28th round pick in 2011
C Ron Hill (.344, 0 HR, 7 RBI) - 22nd round pick in 2010 by Tampa Bay
SS Jacob Olson (.239, 0 HR, 7 RBI, 7 SB) - 1st round pick in 2011
RF Millard Underwood (.274, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 10 SB) - 10th round pick in 2011

The Chula Vista Bonitos will face the AZL Royals
(defending champions) for the league title.

21st August 2011

Game # 124 – Buffalo [49-73] (K. Johnson 8-11, 4.73 ERA) at Milwaukee [85-38] (I. Snell 4-3, 3.89 ERA)

RF L. Cain - 3B M. Gamel - LF R. Braun - 1B P. Fielder - 2B R. Weeks - CF J. Upton - SS O. Hudson - C K. Johjima

Buffalo at Milwaukee: 2-3

W: J. Díaz (4-3); L: R. Mosebach (2-5)
SV: I. González (37)
HR: - / P. Fielder (34), J. Upton (13)
PoG: I. Snell - 7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K
Time: 2:35
Attendance: 45055

3B Mat Gamel's (.330, 15 HR, 59 RBI) dreams of winning the batting title came to an end when he fractured his nose today. He will miss up to three weeks. 3B Fredy de la Cruz (.235, 12 HR, 43 RBI) will take his place and might platoon with Mark Reynolds. De la Cruz played in our system since 2007 and moved up very slowly.

Elsewhere:

Dodgers
C Ramon Hernandez (.283, 22 HR, 77 RBI) is out until Mid-October with a torn abdominal muscle.

Former Brewer and now Boston pitcher Juan Cruz (9-8, 4.12 ERA) pitched a 4-hit shutout against Minnesota.

22nd August 2011

American League Player of the Week:
LF Raul Ibanez (.571, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 2 R - Seattle) - .269, 4 HR, 21 RBI

National League Player of the Week:
1B Lars Anderson (.548, 2 HR, 11 RBI - Cincinnati) - .339, 18 HR, 71 RBI

During bad times, it's always a nice thing to face the Blizzards for a four game series. They are really not that bad, but somehow we have their number. Just a pity that Gamel went down with injury as he was fourth in the NL in batting. I never thought de la Cruz would make our active roster, but he offers above average defense and power. We finish our mamooth homestand with three games against the wildcard-leading Mets. A team that owns the leagues best offense.
