April 2012 - Winnipeg Bisons
Manager and GM Fritsche

16th April 2012

American League Player of the Week:
LF Jason Kubel - Minnesota: .615, 4 HR, 15 RBI

National League Player of the Week:
2B Kazuhide McDonald - Florida: .400, 4 HR, 9 RBI

One of our top prospects 1B John Cromsie won the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week: .429, 3 HR, 9 RBI

Game # 8 – Chicago [2-5] (A. Guzman 0-0, 6.35 ERA) at Winnipeg [4-3] (R. Wells 0-0, 6.43 ERA)

2B B.J. Upton
- 1B Eric Duncan - RF Jayson Werth - LF John Rodriguez- SS J. Harrington- 3B Chris Davis - CF Jeremy Reed - C Josh Bard

Chicago at Winnipeg: 2-3

W: R. Wells (1-0); L: A. Guzman (0-1)
H: M. Mehlich (1), Z. Braddock (2)
SV: S. Shelton (3)
HR: S. Moore (1) / J. Werth (1)
SB: A. Pagan (3) / J. Reed (2)
E: - / J. Bard (1)
PoG: R. Wells - 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 9 K
Time: 2:47
Attendance: 38561

Wells had a fine game against his former team and outdueled Guzman. Werth finally had a game in which he made the difference.

Reliever Héctor Martínez came off the DL and was demoted to AAA Regina. As our 6-man bullpen does a fine job so far, we are not in need to make any chances yet.

17th April 2012

Game # 9 – Chicago [2-6] (L. Gibbons 0-0, 2.57 ERA) at Winnipeg [5-3] (J. Marceaux 1-0, 6.00 ERA)

2B B.J. Upton
- CF Jeremy Reed - RF Jayson Werth - LF John Rodriguez - 1B E. Duncan - SS J. Harrington- 3B Chris Davis - C Rey Gonzalez

Chicago at Winnipeg: 1-8

W: J. Marceaux (2-0); L: L. Gibbons (0-1)
HR: - / J. Werth (2), E. Duncan (2), J. Reed (1), K. Morales (1)
SB: - / J. Reed (3)
CS: - / J. Harrington (1)
PoG: J. Marceaux - 8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Time: 2:55
Attendance: 38834

Virtually unknown Jacob Marceaux gave the Cubs a very hard time and became our first 2-game winner. A Kendry Morales pinch hit grandslam was the offensive key event, that allowed us to win our first homeseries and receiving standing ovations. The Cubs with their $100,000,000 payroll are tied for last with the Brewers in the NL Central.

Elsewhere:

Baltimore
SS Miguel Tejada (.273, 0 HR, 3 RBI) collected his 2500th career hit in a 10-2 loss against Boston.

The Dodgers gave C Ramon Hernandez (.333, 3 HR, 5 RBI) a new 2-year contract worth $15,380,000.

April 2012 - Winnipeg Bisons
Manager and GM Fritsche

18th April 2012

We also won our second series and mood in Winnipeg is great. As expected the rest of the division is winning as well, with the exception of the Brewers and the Cubs. So far pitching carried us as expected, while the batting average is only at .229. John Rodriguez is the only first team regular who is batting better than .300.
Up next is a trip to America's first capital, where the Phillies try to rebound from a "first to last" season. Their pitching is reason for concern though, as they rank dead last with a 6.04 ERA. And without Cole Hamels they's stay at 1-9.

Injury Report:

Winnipeg:

Philadelphia:
RF D. Myers (3 weeks)

Game # 10 – Winnipeg [6-3] (J. Stinson 0-1, 4.50 ERA, 4 BB, 1 K, 1.67 WHIP) at Philadelphia [3-6] (C. Hamels 2-0, 2.84 ERA, 3 BB, 11 K, 1.18 WHIP)

Winnipeg:

3B S. Schoop (.273, 0 HR, 1 RBI)
1B K. Morales (.400, 1 HR, 5 RBI)
RF J. Werth (.273, 2 HR, 3 RBI)
RF H. Bocachica (.071, 0 HR, 1 RBI, 1 SB)
2B B. Upton (.222, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 1 SB)
SS A. Gonzalez (.000, 0 HR, 0 RBI)
C R. Gonzalez (.000, 0 HR, 0 RBI)

Philadelphia:

1B R. Howard (.233, 1 HR, 2 RBI)
LF S. Smith (.316, 1 HR, 5 RBI)
SS J. Rollins (.200, 0 HR, 3 RBI)
2B C. Utley (.357, 0 HR, 0 RBI)
C E. Bryant (.357, 3 HR, 9 RBI)
- 19th overall pick by Philadelphia in 2009

Winnipeg at Philadelphia: 0-4

W:
J. Stinson (1-1); L: C. Hamels (2-1)
CS: - / A. Richardson (2)
PoG:
J. Stinson - 8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Time: 2:37
Attendance: 40213

An incredible performance of Josh Stinson who outdueled Cole Hamels, who was pulled after a base clearing pinch hit triple by Rodriguez.

Elsewhere:

Mariners
reliever David Aardsma (0-0-0, 8.31 ERA) signed a one year contract extension worth $2,970,000.

CF Jeremy Reed - 1B Eric Duncan - RF Jayson Werth - LF John Rodriguez - SS Joe Harrington - 3B Chris Davis - 2B Sharlon Schoop - C Josh Bard

Winnipeg at Philadelphia: 7-12

W:
K. Drabek (1-2); L: T. Gorzelanny (1-2)
SV: F. Osoria (3)
HR: S. Schoop (1), J. Werth (3) / J. Rollins (1), K. Mench (3), P. Burrell (1)

E: J. Harrington (3) / A. Hatch (1)
PoG:
J. Werth - 1/5, 1 R, HR, 4 RBI
Time: 3:48
Attendance: 40097

Gorzelanny got ripped again and five runs in the ninth were not enough to turn the game around.

Elsewhere:

Atlanta
CF Brandon Jones (.152, 0 HR, 3 RBI) will miss at least three weeks with a fractured nose.

The Mets 2B Jose Reyes (.205, 0 HR, 0 RBI) - whom we almost signed as free agent - is out for the year with a fractured elbow.

CF Jeremy Reed - 1B Eric Duncan
- SS Joe Harrington - LF John Rodriguez - 3B Chris Davis - RF Hiram Bocachica - C Josh Bard - 2B Alberto Gonzalez

PoG:
B. Morris - 7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 9 K

A great start by Morris was almost wasted by setup-man Mehlich, but rookie closer Shelton did his job.

Elsewhere:

The Yankees 40-year old $16,000,000 C Jorge Posada (.158, 0 HR, 3 RBI) is out for four weeks with a torn groin muscle.

Toronto gave their SS Michael Hollimon (.211, 2 HR, 6 RBI) a new 2-year contract worth $2,740,000.

I started reading along in 2011, and finally got caught up tonight. Tough loss getting swept out of the playoffs last year, but I wanted to wish you luck in 2012 with an expansion team. From the looks of it things will be challenging, but it does look like you are off to a good start to the season. Good luck in building Winnipeg.

Those playoffs really sucked, but the new Milwaukee manager does very strange things. Braun back to 3B, Gamel at SS

When I saw we would face Tim Dillard (whom I traded from Milwaukee to the Phillies in 2008), I was sure that win # 10 is a given. But Mr. Dillard prooved me seriously wrong, while Mr. Marceaux was the one who struggled.

23rd April 2012 (Off day)

American League Player of the Week:
1B Adrian Gonzalez - Texas: .435, 4 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R (.408, 4 HR, 7 RBI)

National League Player of the Week:
RF Paul McAnulty - Toronto: .609, 5 HR, 10 RBI, 13 R (.382, 7 HR, 14 RBI)

We gave 1B Eric Duncan (.286, 3 HR, 4 RBI) a new 2-year contract worth $1,390,496. He can play 3B as well and is the type of player I like.
IF B.J. Upton (.231, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 2 SB) doesn't want to discuss a new contract though. He thinks the weather in Winnipeg is simply too cold. If he continues to struggle we might sent him to A-Iqaluit where game time temperature averaged 3 degrees for the last four games.

24th April 2012

Cory Van Allen didn't alllow a run in 31.0 innings pitched at AAA Regina. Looks like a matter of time until he is called up.

After three series we have a nice 9-5 record, but this should not be overestimated as we faced three of the NL's worst teams who have a combined 13-29 record ath the moment.
But of course it's nice to see that we can easily compete with the likes of Buffalo, Chicago and Philadelphia. The bullpen struggled a bit recently, and we still bat only .229 as a team.
It will be interesting to see how the beachboys from San Diego ("the team how finally got a shortstop after five years without one") fares in Manitoba's april climate.

Yeah, the AI can do some really strange things.... It always helps to beat the bad teams though, especially when you are an expansion team. I wouldn't expect an expansion team to have a winning record, but who knows what can happen.

My game seems to have a little shortstop bug. The Padres played without a real SS for four seasons as they tried to convert Huffman, who committed over 60 errors in a season. But at least no army of catchers yet

Manager and GM Fritsche

28th April 2012

So here came our first series loss against San Diego, everybody knew it would come, but still kind of odd to lose three out of four when you give up only nine runs in those games. As we are near the end of the season's first month our batting is still wretched (.227), but pitching carries us so far.
The upcoming trip to the again high flying Marlins is another real test. Also because we are not used to such warm weather that early in the year. They are batting .304 (1st) and have a team ERA of 3.34 (3rd).

Marceaux (against his former team) and two relievers pitched an impressive two hitter, whil we only had four hits ourselves. Guess few picked Marceaux as our first pitcher to reach three wins before the season.

Elsewhere:

Atlanta
's CF Gregor Blanco (.262, 1 HR, 5 RBI) is out for about a year with a torn rib cage muscle.

SP Josh Stinson (2-2, 26.0 IP, 23 H, 9 BB, 18 K, 3.46 ERA, 1.23 WHIP)
CL Stephen Shelton (0-0-7, 5.2 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, 5 K, 3.18 ERA, 1.76 WHIP)

3B Chris Davis (.200, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 1 R, 2 BB, 10 K)
C Josh Bard (.159, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 K)

What a great start for our franchise, despite batting only .227. We decide to sent Corey Madden down to AAA Regina and call rookie Héctor Martínez (1-0-0, 0.00 ERA - AAA) up.

Regina's ace Cory Van Allen (5-0, 0.00 ERA - AAA) won the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Month award after allowing only 22 baserunners in 39.0 IP.
