Cincinnati continues its run atop the league, while Boston is gradually beginning to play like the contenders they were expected to be. Cap Anson has been red-hot during Boston's recent run, and is 14 for his last 23 at-bats with 9 runs scored. Because of this, Anson now leads the league in basically every offensive category. This sets up an interesting battle, as Cincinnati is visiting Beantown this week. Someone's hot streak looks like it's going to end.

Even Cap Anson and the hard-hitting Red Caps could not slow down the Cincinnati Reds, as Cincy took two of three to continue their surprising run atop the National League standings. However, a true test lies ahead; for the next five games, Cincinnati will be battling with the second-place Chicago White Stockings. Chicago appears to be rounding into midseason form, and just got long-injured shortstop John Bass back in their lineup. However, the White Stockings are still not certain what this will mean for John Peters, who has filled in quite capably so far this year.

Cincinnati dropped two of three to Chicago this week, and with games coming up this week against Chicago and Syracuse, this race could get a whole lot more interesting. Meanwhile, Boston had five games in five days against the Providence Grays and won all five of them, catapulting themselves back into the thick of the race. Individually, Cleveland's Dalrymple and Boston's Anson continue to be the league's best hitters, while left-hander Bobby Mitchell of Cincinnati continues to impress as a hurler.

Hm, as you say that's starting to look like a good race. Chicago and Syracuse are only two out, and Boston's only a game behind THEM.

True enough. Also, with the schedule expanding this year to approximately 84 games, there's more time for these things to develop.

July 6, 1879 - Sunday Base Ball Report

Cincinnati Reds 21-10
Chicago White Stockings 18-13
Boston Red Caps 18-14
Syracuse Stars 18-14
Troy Trojans 16-15
Providence Grays 14-18
Buffalo Bisons 12-20
Cleveland Blues 9-22

Trailing first-place Cincinnati by three games, Chicago's pennant chances took another turn for the worse this week, as oft-injured shortstop John Bass fractured his ankle and will be out of action until nearly the end of the season. After missing over a year with a back injury, the highly-paid infielder appeared in only 8 games (batting .265) before succumbing. This seems certain to damage Chicago's hopes for a fourth consecutive pennant.

Meanwhile, the hard-hitting Boston club continues to creep up in the standings. They will be traveling to Cincinnati late in the week, so things could get a lot more interesting in a hurry.

The current league leaders:

Batting Average - .410, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps

A big week for Boston has them only a game behind Cincinnati in the standings. This week sees the Red Caps visit Cleveland (two games) and Syracuse (one game), while Cincinnati takes on Troy (one game) and Chicago (two games).

Cap Anson is on pace to have a truly historic season in Boston. With the season nearing the halfway point, he currently has the 11th-best season of all time by VORP. At this pace, he'll have the greatest season of all time sometime in early August. He leads the batting race by 66 points, has 80 hits (there is only one other player with more than 67 - his teammate Cal McVey),
54 runs scored - 18 more than the next-highest player not playing for Boston,
and also leads the league in on-base percentage and stolen bases.

Cincinnati and Boston are creating some real separation between themselves and the rest of the league. Wow, the Chicago White Stockings are completely snakebit this season. Yesterday, they lost star first baseman Joe Start to a season-ending rib injury. This follows long-term injuries to Paul Hines and John Bass, and starters Bill McClellan, George Gore, and J. O'Neill have also missed significant time this season due to injury. It seems virtually certain that they'd be near the top of the league's standings if not for all the injuries, but now they are just trying to stay in the running.

It appears that injuries are going to play a large role in this year's National League pennant race. Chicago's injury problems are well-documented, and they are still missing Joe Start, Paul Hines, and John Bass. This week, the other two major contenders also suffered big losses - Boston's Cap Anson went down with an arm injury that is expected to keep him out another three weeks, and Cincinnati lost their young star King Kelly for approximately two weeks. This rash of downed players has teams like Syracuse and Troy wondering if they can sneak into a contending position as a result.

As the battle for National League supremacy continues, Syracuse is quietly moving toward the top of the standings. The Stars were expected to be one of the NL's worst teams this year, and indeed their lineup doesn't look like much - catcher Mike Hooper (.278) is the best-hitting regular. However, thanks to some good pitching and defense they are holding their own even against the established powerhouses of the league.

As the season heads into its final month, it looks like a three-team race for the pennant between Boston, Cincinnati and Syracuse. (Chicago and Troy aren't completely out of the running, but both teams would need a miracle to win it.) Boston's hitting-oriented team seems to have the upper hand, but the great pitching staffs on Cincinnati and Syracuse are sure to keep things interesting.

Boston Red Caps 43-26
Cincinnati Reds 41-22
Syracuse Stars 40-28
Chicago White Stockings 35-32
Troy Trojans 33-33
Cleveland Blues 27-40
Providence Grays 25-44
Buffalo Bisons 22-41

It's the final month of the season, and two teams still have a good shot at winning their first-ever National League pennant. (Syracuse has played well, but it is believed that they are about to suspend their season due to financial difficulties.) Here are the remaining schedules:

Boston: 3 vs. Chicago (home), 3 vs. Cincinnati (home), 3 vs. Cleveland (home), 6 vs. Providence (3 home, 3 road)
Cincinnati: 3 vs. Troy (away), 3 vs. Boston (away), 3 vs. Providence (away), 4 vs. Buffalo (away), 4 vs. Cleveland (away)

Thus, Cincinnati will need to perform well on the road if they are to take the pennant this year. In addition, Boston finally has all three members of their "big three" healthy for the first time in months, making the Reds' task still more difficult.

The current league leaders:

Batting Average - .402, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
On-Base Percentage - .441, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
Slugging Percentage - .500, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
OPS - .941, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
Hits - 111, Cal McVey, Boston Red Caps
Doubles - 19, Clipper Flynn, Cincinnati Reds
Triples - 10, Bill McClellan, Chicago White Stockings
Home Runs - 4, 3 players tied
Extra Base Hits - 27, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons
Total Bases - 133, Cal McVey, Boston Red Caps
Runs Batted In - 56, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps
Runs Scored - 70, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
Stolen Bases - 12, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
Walks - 20, Steve Bellan, Cincinnati and Charlie Bennett, Troy
Strikeouts - 55, Charlie Bennett, Troy Trojans
RC/27 - 9.11, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
ISO - .151, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons
VORP (Batting) - 30.4, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps

Earned Run Average - 1.87, Bobby Mitchell, Cincinnati Reds
Wins - 28, Bobby Mitchell, Cincinnati and The Only Nolan, Syracuse
Losses - 25, Dick McBride, Buffalo Bisons
Saves - 3, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues
Innings Pitched - 391 1/3, The Only Nolan, Syracuse Stars
Shutouts - 6, Bobby Mitchell, Cincinnati Reds
Walks - 42, Dick McBride, Buffalo Bisons
Strikeouts - 194, Bobby Mitchell, Cincinnati Reds
H/9IP - 8.77, Bobby Mitchell, Cincinnati Reds
HR/9IP - 0.00, John Greason, Boston Red Caps
BB/9IP - 0.63, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps

True enough, by today's rules. But in the 1870s, the pennant winner was simply the team with the most wins.

Boston and Cincinnati split the first two games of their head-to-head matchup. For the Reds, it looks like their pennant hopes will come down to winning the final game between the two teams and then hoping lowly Providence can steal a few from the Beantowners.

Cincinnati dropped three of four games this week, including two losses to lowly Providence, to all but hand the pennant to the Boston Red Caps. It's still possible for Cincinnati to win it, but at this point it would take a small miracle.

FINAL 1879 STANDINGS AND LEADERS

Boston Red Caps 56-28
Cincinnati Reds 49-31
Syracuse Stars 40-30
Chicago White Stockings 40-39
Troy Trojans 36-39
Cleveland Blues 35-47
Buffalo Bisons 30-48
Providence Grays 30-54

In the end, Boston didn't have any trouble at all. The hitting attack of the Red Caps was simply too much for the competition, as Harry Wright's "big three" of Anson, McVey and Barnes returned the championship of base ball to the city of Boston for the first time since 1872. With all three members of the trio under contract through at least 1882, this could be a new dynasty in the making. However, look for a big challenge next season from both the pitching-heavy Reds and a (hopefully) healthy Chicago club.

In other news, the Syracuse franchise has announced that it will be folding. To keep the National League roster at eight clubs, there will be a new team based in Worcester, MA, next season.

The final league leaders:

Batting Average - .389, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
On-Base Percentage - .420, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
Slugging Percentage - .511, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
OPS - .931, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps
Hits - 135, Cal McVey, Boston Red Caps
Doubles - 22, Clipper Flynn, Cincinnati Reds
Triples - 12, Pete Hotaling, Cincinnati Reds
Home Runs - 5, John O'Rourke, Boston Red Caps
Extra Base Hits - 33, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons
Total B
