May 15, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Cleveland Blues 8-2 Boston Red Caps 6-3 Detroit Wolverines 6-3 Troy Trojans 5-3 Worcester Ruby Legs 4-5 Providence Grays 3-6 Buffalo Bisons 3-7 Chicago White Stockings 2-8 Cleveland and Boston at the top of the standings are no surprise, but the Detroit Wolverines are. Thus far, it's been the stellar pitching of Tommy Bond combined with some timely hitting by King Kelly and Orator Shaffer that's kept Detroit competitive. They've beaten Buffalo and Worcester so far, and this week they will do battle with Troy and Providence. Ross Barnes joined the 1,000 hit club this week, and now sits in second place with 1,002 hits. At 983 hits, Cap Anson will be joining the club soon. The big injury news for the week is that Troy's Buck Ewing, who was just starting to come into his own, broke his arm and will be out approximately two months. Finally, Chicago is still reeling from their slow start. They still seem like a fundamentally sound team, but part of the problem is the 0-5 start by sophomore sensation Larry Corcoran. Chicago looks to get better this week at home against Worcester and Boston. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .464, Buck Ewing, Troy Trojans On-Base Percentage - .483, Buck Ewing, Troy Trojans Slugging Percentage - .649, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons OPS - 1.063, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Hits - 19, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Doubles - 5, Cal McVey, Boston Red Caps Triples - 3, 3 players tied Home Runs - 2, Harry Stovey, Worcester Ruby Legs Extra Base Hits - 6, Roger Connor, Troy and Lip Pike, Buffalo Total Bases - 24, Fred Dunlap, Cleveland and Lip Pike, Buffalo Runs Batted In - 10, Ned Hanlon, Cleveland Blues Runs Scored - 11, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Stolen Bases - 3, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Walks - 6, Hardy Richardson, Buffalo Bisons Strikeouts - 8, Arlie Latham, Buffalo Bisons RC/27 - 11.44, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons ISO - .297, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Batting) - 5.4, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Earned Run Average - 0.59, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines Wins - 6, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Losses - 5, Larry Corcoran, Chicago and Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Saves - 0 Innings Pitched - 59 1/3, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Shutouts - 2, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Walks - 15, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 26, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs H/9IP - 6.26, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines HR/9IP - 0.00, many players tied BB/9IP - 0.67, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps K/9IP - 5.21, The Only Nolan, Worcester Ruby Legs K/BB Ratio - 5.50, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps Opp. Avg. - .180, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines WHIP - 0.85, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines VORP (Pitching) - 15.5, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines

May 22, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Cleveland Blues 11-3 Boston Red Caps 9-4 Troy Trojans 8-5 Detroit Wolverines 7-7 Buffalo Bisons 6-8 Worcester Ruby Legs 5-8 Providence Grays 5-8 Chicago White Stockings 3-11 Cleveland and Boston continue to look good, while a bad week for Detroit has them back nearer to their original expectations. Chicago's hitting is around league average, but last year's superstar rookie Larry Corcoran is off to a terrible start (1-6, 3.66) for the team this year. No one expected the pitching and defense to fall apart for Chicago, but right now that's where they are. The individual leaders are mostly a group of 1870s veterans out to good starts - Lip Pike, Levi Meyerle, Ross Barnes. While the young players have been taking over in the past couple seasons, the old guard is showing a little life early in 1871. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .438, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings On-Base Percentage - .448, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Slugging Percentage - .623, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons OPS - 1.063, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Hits - 28, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Doubles - 6, "Orator Jim" O'Rourke, Chicago White Stockings Triples - 3, 3 players tied Home Runs - 2, John Morrill, Boston and Harry Stovey, Worcester Extra Base Hits - 8, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Total Bases - 33, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Runs Batted In - 12, 4 players tied Runs Scored - 18, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Stolen Bases - 4, Cap Anson, Boston and Arlie Latham, Buffalo Walks - 7, 4 players tied Strikeouts - 10, Arlie Latham, Buffalo and Orator Shaffer, Detroit RC/27 - 11.45, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons ISO - .245, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Batting) - 8.3, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Earned Run Average - 0.91, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines Wins - 8, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Losses - 7, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 1, NFN O'Rourke, Worcester Ruby Legs Innings Pitched - 82, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Shutouts - 2, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Walks - 24, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 40, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs H/9IP - 6.91, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines HR/9IP - 0.00, 8 players tied BB/9IP - 0.00, Mike Golden, Detroit Wolverines K/9IP - 5.70, The Only Nolan, Worcester Ruby Legs K/BB Ratio - cannot be computed for players with 0 walks Opp. Avg. - .194, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines WHIP - 0.82, Mike Golden, Detroit Wolverines VORP (Pitching) - 21.8, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines

May 29, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Cleveland Blues 12-6 Boston Red Caps 11-6 Troy Trojans 11-6 Detroit Wolverines 10-8 Buffalo Bisons 8-10 Worcester Ruby Legs 7-10 Providence Grays 7-10 Chicago White Stockings 4-14 As we approach the one-quarter mark of 1881, it looks like we've got a real pennant race on our hands. Cleveland and Boston are at the top of the standings, as expected, but Troy and Detroit are surprisingly right there battling for position. Meanwhile, the best individual performances so far have come from teams that are struggling. Lip Pike of Buffalo and Levi Meyerle of Chicago have been two of the best hitters in the game despite their teams' lackluster records. Interestingly, Cleveland leads in the standings despite the fact that their hitting has been poor and their pitching hasn't really been anything special. This is because their defense is far and away the best in the National League. For the first time, a team has a very clear advantage in the standings solely based upon their defense. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .383, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings On-Base Percentage - .434, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Slugging Percentage - .582, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons OPS - 1.016, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Hits - 31, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Doubles - 8, "Orator Jim" O'Rourke, Chicago White Stockings Triples - 3, 3 players tied Home Runs - 2, John Morrill, Boston and Harry Stovey, Worcester Extra Base Hits - 10, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Total Bases - 39, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Runs Batted In - 15, John Clapp, Troy Trojans Runs Scored - 20, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Stolen Bases - 4, Cap Anson, Boston and Arlie Latham, Buffalo Walks - 10, 3 players tied Strikeouts - 14, John Morrill, Boston Red Caps RC/27 - 10.48, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons ISO - .224, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Batting) - 9.4, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Earned Run Average - 1.00, George Derby, Detroit Wolverines Wins - 9, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Losses - 9, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 1, 4 players tied Innings Pitched - 104, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Shutouts - 2, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Walks - 29, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 48, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 8.00, George Derby, Detroit Wolverines HR/9IP - 0.00, 8 players tied BB/9IP - 0.72, Jack Lynch, Buffalo Bisons K/9IP - 6.00, George Derby, Detroit Wolverines K/BB Ratio - 4.27, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .208, George Derby, Detroit Wolverines WHIP - 1.05, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines VORP (Pitching) - 26.3, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines

Boston Red Caps 14-7 Cleveland Blues 13-8 Detroit Wolverines 13-8 Troy Trojans 12-8 Buffalo Bisons 10-12 Providence Grays 8-12 Worcester Ruby Legs 8-13 Chicago White Stockings 6-16 It looks like things are beginning to settle into a four-team race, with Buffalo possibly entering the picture if their hitters can sustain their torrid pace. Detroit is the hot team of the moment, with a five-game winning streak despite the fact that King Kelly, the team's best player, is on the disabled list due to an abdominal injury. Meanwhile, Cap Anson stands at 998 hits, which means that this week he should become the third player ever with 1,000 career hits, joining teammates Ross Barnes and Cal McVey. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .372, George Gore, Chicago White Stockings On-Base Percentage - .426, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Slugging Percentage - .560, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons OPS - .985, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Hits - 36, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Doubles - 9, "Orator Jim" O'Rourke, Chicago White Stockings Triples - 4, Dude Esterbrook, Buffalo Bisons Home Runs - 2, John Morrill, Boston and Harry Stovey, Worcester Extra Base Hits - 12, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Total Bases - 47, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Runs Batted In - 19, Deacon White, Buffalo Bisons Runs Scored - 24, Arlie Latham, Buffalo Bisons Stolen Bases - 6, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Walks - 12, Jimmy Wood, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 17, John Morrill, Boston Red Caps RC/27 - 9.89, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons ISO - .202, Dude Esterbrook, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Batting) - 11.2, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Earned Run Average - 1.00, George Derby, Detroit Wolverines Wins - 9, George Bradley, Cleveland and Pud Galvin, Troy Losses - 11, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 1, 4 players tied Innings Pitched - 122, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Shutouts - 2, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Walks - 32, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 57, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs H/9IP - 6.75, Terry Larkin, Boston Red Caps HR/9IP - 0.00, many players tied BB/9IP - 0.75, Terry Larkin, Boston Red Caps K/9IP - 5.50, George Derby, Detroit Wolverines K/BB Ratio - 4.07, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .186, Terry Larkin, Boston Red Caps WHIP - 0.83, Terry Larkin, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 29.2, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines

June 12, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report Boston Red Caps 15-8 Cleveland Blues 15-9 Troy Trojans 14-9 Detroit Wolverines 14-10 Buffalo Bisons 11-13 Providence Grays 9-14 Worcester Ruby Legs 8-15 Chicago White Stockings 8-16 In a week that saw Boston star Cap Anson join his two teammates in the 1,000 hits club, the top four teams in the NL continued to separate themselves from the pack. Interestingly, each of the four teams is succeeding with a different method: Boston is using a balanced attack. Their 150 runs scored ranks third in the National League, which is low by their standards but still very respectable. Meanwhile, their pitching has surrendered only 113 runs, second in the league. A good portion of this is due to their excellent defense. Speaking of excellent defense, it's what is keeping the Cleveland Blues in the hunt. Cleveland is last in the league in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, but they have allowed only 106 runs. Pitcher George Bradley would no doubt like the credit for this success, but in reality it appears to be mostly due to strong defense at basically every position. Troy is basically using the opposite approach: they have the highest batting average and on-base percentage in the league, and are using it to make up for a relatively weak defensive unit. In addition, pitcher Pud Galvin is one of the best starters in base ball. Finally, Detroit's success appears to be due to a lineup that is fundamentally consistent from top to bottom. Their only star is (currently injured) shortstop King Kelly, but their lineup is very good at every spot; only catcher Barney Gilligan is an easy out in the bunch. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .386, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings On-Base Percentage - .408, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Slugging Percentage - .522, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons OPS - .930, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Hits - 44, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Doubles - 9, Steve Bellan, Detroit and "Orator Jim" O'Rourke, Chicago Triples - 5, Dude Esterbrook, Buffalo Bisons Home Runs - 2, 5 players tied Extra Base Hits - 12, Dude Esterbrook, Buffalo and Lip Pike, Buffalo Total Bases - 51, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Runs Batted In - 23, Deacon White, Buffalo Bisons Runs Scored - 29, Arlie Latham, Buffalo Bisons Stolen Bases - 6, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Walks - 12, Jimmy Wood, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 18, John Morrill, Boston Red Caps RC/27 - 8.46, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons ISO - .209, Dude Esterbrook, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Batting) - 10.3, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Earned Run Average - 1.13, Terry Larkin, Boston Red Caps Wins - 10, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Losses - 11, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 2, John "Lefty" McMullin, Chicago White Stockings Innings Pitched - 140, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Shutouts - 2, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Walks - 33, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 68, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 6.75, Terry Larkin, Boston Red Caps HR/9IP - 0.00, 7 players tied BB/9IP - 0.75, Terry Larkin, Boston Red Caps K/9IP - 5.66, Harry Salisbury, Troy Trojans K/BB Ratio - 4.14, George Derby, Detroit Wolverines Opp. Avg. - .186, Terry Larkin, Boston Red Caps WHIP - 0.83, Terry Larkin, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 29.7, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines

However, they have a big test later this week, as they travel to Cleveland to begin a three-game series there on Friday. Troy and Detroit will also be battling this week, so there is an opportunity for some of the also-rans to make up some ground this week. In particular, Buffalo has looked good at times this season but does not have the record to show for it; perhaps this will be their chance to gain ground on the leaders. The two teams that benefited the most were the Buffalo Bisons and the surprising Providence Grays, who are flirting with their first .500 season ever. After league-leading Boston finishes its series in Cleveland this week (one game remains), they head to red-hot Buffalo for a three-game series. This will be a real test for the Big Three. July 3, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Boston Red Caps 22-13 Cleveland Blues 22-14 Troy Trojans 21-14 Detroit Wolverines 18-18 Buffalo Bisons 16-19 Providence Grays 15-20 Worcester Ruby Legs 14-20 Chicago White Stockings 13-23 As we close in on the halfway point of the season, it is starting to look like a three-team race between Boston, Cleveland and Troy. (You'd almost think someone predicted these to be the top three teams.) Of course, the bottom teams are closer than usual to the first division, so there is still plenty of time for one of them to get hot and join the race, but at the moment it looks like these will be the contenders. Boston is led by the usual suspects: Anson and Barnes are again two of the best position players in base ball, and McVey, while not quite at their level, is perhaps the best catcher out there. Cleveland is doing it with pitching, defense, and some timely hitting from Glasscock, Dunlap and Dalrymple. Troy has some great young players in Brouthers, Connor and Buck Ewing, but perhaps because of this youth they tend to be wildly inconsistent from one game to the next. Cleveland's title hopes actually suffered a serious blow this week, as they lost starting third baseman Fred Waterman for the year to an injury. At 35, Waterman is no longer the star he was in his younger days, but he is still a solid player who was hitting .298 for the Blues. In addition, the team doesn't really have much to replace him with; Jack Gleason, who they've installed as the new guy, is a very good fielder at third but has a lifetime average of .192 in parts of five seasons with the St. Louis Brown Stockings, the Indianapolis Blues, and Cleveland. Finally, a big individual achievement this week: Paul Hines of Chicago, who will be a free agent this offseason if he doesn't sign an extension (and who is only 26 years old), has tied the single-season record for home runs by hitting his fourth and fifth shots of the season this week. This achievement is made even more amazing because no other player in base ball has more than two home runs, and we aren't even to the season's halfway point yet. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .362, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps On-Base Percentage - .421, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Slugging Percentage - .497, Jack Glasscock, Cleveland Blues OPS - .917, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Hits - 58, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Doubles - 12, 3 players tied Triples - 6, Jack Glasscock, Cleveland Blues Home Runs - 5, Paul Hines, Chicago White Stockings Extra Base Hits - 18, Jack Glasscock, Cleveland Blues Total Bases - 77, Jack Glasscock, Cleveland Blues Runs Batted In - 29, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Runs Scored - 35, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Stolen Bases - 9, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Walks - 17, Roger Connor, Troy and Jimmy Wood, Troy Strikeouts - 28, Orator Shaffer, Detroit Wolverines RC/27 - 7.91, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps ISO - .170, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Batting) - 17.1, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.59, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps Wins - 15, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Losses - 14, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 2, John "Lefty" McMullin, Chicago White Stockings Innings Pitched - 206, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Shutouts - 2, Foghorn Bradley, Boston and George Bradley, Cleveland Walks - 38, George Bradley, Cleveland and Larry Corcoran, Chicago Strikeouts - 110, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.02, Harry Wheeler, Providence Grays HR/9IP - 0.00, 6 players tied BB/9IP - 0.80, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps K/9IP - 4.88, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings K/BB Ratio - 4.31, George Derby, Detroit Wolverines Opp. Avg. - .195, Harry Wheeler, Providence Grays WHIP - 1.01, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 32.3, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines

July 10, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report Cleveland Blues 26-14 Boston Red Caps 24-15 Troy Trojans 22-17 Detroit Wolverines 21-19 Buffalo Bisons 19-20 Worcester Ruby Legs 15-23 Providence Grays 15-24 Chicago White Stockings 15-25 A three-game sweep of Providence and a win in the opening game against Troy has the Cleveland Blues on a five-game winning streak and gives them a two-game lead on the Boston Red Caps, who split four games in Chicago and Detroit this week. The Blues' formula of pitching and defense continues to look good, as opposing clubs are having trouble getting to George Bradley (16-4, 2.10) and the team is getting just enough hitting from Jack Glasscock (.351), Abner Dalrymple (.290) and Fred Dunlap (.289). July 17, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Cleveland Blues 28-15 Boston Red Caps 25-17 Troy Trojans 23-19 Detroit Wolverines 23-20 Buffalo Bisons 20-22 Chicago White Stockings 18-25 Worcester Ruby Legs 16-25 Providence Grays 16-26 The big story of the week was Buffalo pitcher Bill McGunnigle, who recorded a no-hit game against the Providence Grays on Tuesday, the National League's first-ever no-hitter and professional base ball's second. (Ed Stratton of the New York Mutuals no-hit the New Haven Elm Citys in 1875.) Other than that, Cleveland continued to consolidate its hold on the top spot in the league while Cap Anson and Ross Barnes of Boston continued to amass most of the individual accolades. In upcoming milestones, Levi Meyerle of Chicago looks like he might become the fourth player ever to get 1,000 hits sometime later this year, as he currently has 958. No other player is over 900. Pud Galvin is second all-time in wins for a pitcher with 141, and with 16 wins for the year he is closing in on leader Dick McBride, who sits at 165 (and has 4 this year with Detroit). July 24, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Cleveland Blues 31-16 Boston Red Caps 28-18 Troy Trojans 25-20 Detroit Wolverines 25-22 Buffalo Bisons 21-25 Chicago White Stockings 20-27 Providence Grays 18-27 Worcester Ruby Legs 16-29 Cleveland continues to pace the field on the strength of their pitching and defense. While Boston and even Troy and Detroit remain in striking distance, the Blues have been remarkably consistent in recent weeks, winning despite injuries and some of their hitters having slumped. Now that Dalrymple has hit his stride (batting .473 for July after a .247 May and a .325 June) they look tough to beat. As the trade deadline approaches, here is a list of the best upcoming free agents for each team: Boston - SP Foghorn Bradley (9-2, 1.67; lifetime 120-90) - With so much of their money committed to the "Big Three," Harry Wright may not be able to afford this fine pitcher. Buffalo - 2B Lip Pike (2-26-.339-2) - His contract has been killing the team for years, and now that it's finally up he's having his best season since the early 1870s. He is 36 years old, though, so teams may be wary of signing him to another big deal. Chicago - OF Paul Hines (5-24-.264-1) - This aging team is in financial trouble and may lose this popular slugger as a result. He is something of an enigma: a 26-year-old ten-year veteran whose numbers never seem as good as his reputation would suggest. Cleveland - SP George Bradley (20-5, 2.04) - Detractors suggest the team's fine defense deserves the credit for his lofty numbers. However, are they willing to risk that when most of their best position players are cost-controlled for several more years? Detroit - No significant free agents this year. Providence - CF Frank McCarton (0-13-.244-0) - He came to Providence a star, and has been shuffled around and generally ill-treated by management. He will almost certainly be leaving this year, but is he still the consistent .350 hitter he was in the mid-1870s? Troy - SP Pud Galvin (18-12, 2.67) - He is young, popular and important to Troy's success. Many observers expect that he will sign an extension before the season ends. However, Troy could be in some trouble if he does not. Worcester - No significant free agents this year. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .365, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps On-Base Percentage - .412, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Slugging Percentage - .503, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons OPS - .894, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Hits - 72, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 15, "Orator Jim" O'Rourke, Chicago and Lip Pike, Buffalo Triples - 7, Jack Glasscock, Cleveland Blues Home Runs - 5, Paul Hines, Chicago White Stockings Extra Base Hits - 21, Jack Glasscock, Cleveland and Lip Pike, Buffalo Total Bases - 99, Jack Glasscock, Cleveland Blues Runs Batted In - 39, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Runs Scored - 45, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Stolen Bases - 11, Hugh Nicol, Chicago White Stockings Walks - 20, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 32, John Morrill, Boston and Orator Shaffer, Detroit RC/27 - 8.21, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps ISO - .164, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Batting) - 23.4, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.51, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines Wins - 20, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues Losses - 18, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 2, John "Lefty" McMullin, Chicago White Stockings Innings Pitched - 273, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Shutouts - 2, Foghorn Bradley, Boston and George Bradley, Cleveland Walks - 55, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 146, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.34, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues HR/9IP - 0.00, 3 players tied BB/9IP - 0.74, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps K/9IP - 4.85, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings K/BB Ratio - 4.33, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .216, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues WHIP - 1.02, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues VORP (Pitching) - 41.4, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues

Cleveland Blues 32-18 Boston Red Caps 31-19 Troy Trojans 27-23 Detroit Wolverines 27-24 Chicago White Stockings 23-28 Buffalo Bisons 22-27 Providence Grays 21-29 Worcester Ruby Legs 17-32 Cleveland had a down week last week, as they dropped two of three in Chicago, including an embarrassing 21-1 loss. Meanwhile, Boston took three of four from Worcester and Troy. There are now three months gone in the 1881 season, and two to go. Although it looks like a two-team race at the moment, both Troy and Detroit are close enough to possible get back into the race. This week, Boston has three games against lowly Worcester, while Cleveland heads to Detroit for a three-game set. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .365, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps On-Base Percentage - .418, George Gore, Chicago White Stockings Slugging Percentage - .500, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons OPS - .897, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Hits - 80, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 20, "Orator Jim" O'Rourke, Chicago and Lip Pike, Buffalo Triples - 7, Jack Glasscock, Cleveland Blues Home Runs - 5, Paul Hines, Chicago White Stockings Extra Base Hits - 23, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Total Bases - 106, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Runs Batted In - 43, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Runs Scored - 50, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Stolen Bases - 13, Hugh Nicol, Chicago White Stockings Walks - 20, 3 players tied Strikeouts - 34, John Morrill, Boston Red Caps RC/27 - 7.82, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps ISO - .168, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Batting) - 25.9, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.70, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps Wins - 20, George Bradley, Cleveland and Pud Galvin, Troy Losses - 20, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 2, John "Lefty" McMullin, Chicago White Stockings Innings Pitched - 298, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Shutouts - 2, Foghorn Bradley, Boston and George Bradley, Cleveland Walks - 61, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 164, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.57, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues HR/9IP - 0.00, 3 players tied BB/9IP - 0.76, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps K/9IP - 4.96, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings K/BB Ratio - 4.19, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .220, Harry Wheeler, Providence Grays WHIP - 1.00, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 41.1, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans

August 7, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Boston Red Caps 33-20 Cleveland Blues 32-21 Detroit Wolverines 30-24 Troy Trojans 29-25 Chicago White Stockings 25-29 Buffalo Bisons 23-29 Providence Grays 23-31 Worcester Ruby Legs 18-34 A terrible week for Cleveland threw the National League race wide open. The Blues were swept by the Detroit Wolverines, allowing Boston to take a one-game lead, and the Wolverines are now only three games out of first. Cleveland needs to find some offense, as they have exceeded three runs scored only once in the past seven games. (They are 2-5 in that span.) This week, they get to try to rediscover their hitting against Buffalo. Meanwhile, Boston, after taking two of three from last-place Worcester, takes on the Providence Grays for four games this week. If Cleveland has trouble with Buffalo, this could be a chance for Boston to open up a lead. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .369, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps On-Base Percentage - .416, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Slugging Percentage - .489, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps OPS - .904, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Hits - 86, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 21, "Orator Jim" O'Rourke, Chicago and Lip Pike, Buffalo Triples - 7, Cap Anson, Boston and Jack Glasscock, Cleveland Home Runs - 5, Paul Hines, Chicago White Stockings Extra Base Hits - 23, "Orator Jim" O'Rourke, Chicago and Lip Pike, Buffalo Total Bases - 114, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Runs Batted In - 44, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Runs Scored - 54, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Stolen Bases - 14, Hugh Nicol, Chicago White Stockings Walks - 21, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 34, John Morrill, Boston Red Caps RC/27 - 8.27, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps ISO - .158, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Batting) - 29.0, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.60, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines Wins - 22, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Losses - 21, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 2, Tim Keefe, Troy and John "Lefty" McMullin, Chicago Innings Pitched - 324 1/3, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Shutouts - 2, 3 players tied Walks - 68, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 183, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.47, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues HR/9IP - 0.00, 3 players tied BB/9IP - 0.70, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps K/9IP - 5.09, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings K/BB Ratio - 4.06, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .219, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues WHIP - 0.97, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 50.7, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines

Cleveland appears to have finally come out of their slump, as they ended their five-game losing streak by beating Buffalo twice in a row. Meanwhile, Paul Hines of Chicago became the first professional base ball player ever to hit six home runs in a single season this week. He has twice as many as his next closest rivals, and could add still more long balls before the season is over. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .367, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps On-Base Percentage - .409, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Slugging Percentage - .488, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons OPS - .894, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Hits - 92, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 22, "Orator Jim" O'Rourke, Chicago and Lip Pike, Buffalo Triples - 8, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Home Runs - 6, Paul Hines, Chicago White Stockings Extra Base Hits - 25, Lip Pike, Buffalo Bisons Total Bases - 122, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Runs Batted In - 45, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Runs Scored - 56, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Stolen Bases - 14, Hugh Nicol, Chicago White Stockings Walks - 22, Ross Barnes, Boston and Roger Connor, Troy Strikeouts - 35, Emil Gross, Providence and John Morrill, Boston RC/27 - 7.78, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps ISO - .158, Paul Hines, Chicago White Stockings VORP (Batting) - 29.6, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.60, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines Wins - 23, Pud Galvin, Troy Trojans Losses - 22, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 2, Tim Keefe, Troy and John "Lefty" McMullin, Chicago Innings Pitched - 349 2/3, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Shutouts - 2, 3 players tied Walks - 80, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 198, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.39, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues HR/9IP - 0.00, Harry Wheeler, Providence and Jack Lynch, Buffalo BB/9IP - 0.73, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps K/9IP - 5.10, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings K/BB Ratio - 4.26, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .217, George Bradley, Cleveland Blues WHIP - 0.97, Foghorn Bradley, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 55.2, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines
