May 21, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Red Caps 10-3 Cleveland Blues 8-4 Detroit Wolverines 8-4 Troy Trojans 8-5 Chicago White Stockings 5-6 Providence Grays 4-8 Worcester Ruby Legs 3-9 Buffalo Bisons 2-9 With seven wins in their last eight games, Boston has taken the early lead over Cleveland, Detroit and Troy. This week, they will take on Troy and Providence. Cleveland probably has the best chance to move up this week because they will have four games against weak Buffalo. The hapless Bisons have hit only .179 through their first 11 games. The most significant injury note so far in the National League is Harry Stovey of Worcester, who will be out for the next 1-2 months with an abdominal injury. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .404, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans On-Base Percentage - .467, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Slugging Percentage - .700, Harry Stovey, Worcester Ruby Legs OPS - 1.109, Harry Stovey, Worcester Ruby Legs Hits - 21, Cap Anson, Boston and Dan Brouthers, Troy Doubles - 7, Jim Foran, Cleveland Blues Triples - 6, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Home Runs - 3, Tom Burns, Chicago and Harry Stovey, Worcester Extra Base Hits - 9, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Total Bases - 38, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Runs Batted In - 16, Cap Anson, Boston and Roger Connor, Troy Runs Scored - 17, 3 players tied Stolen Bases - 5, Tom Poorman, Buffalo Bisons Walks - 7, 3 players tied Strikeouts - 13, Fred Lewis, Boston Red Caps RC/27 - 11.41, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps ISO - .350, Harry Stovey, Worcester Ruby Legs VORP (Batting) - 9.8, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Earned Run Average - 0.00, Charley "Old Hoss" Radbourn, Providence Grays Wins - 5, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Losses - 6, Bill McGunnigle, Buffalo Bisons Saves - 2, Jim McCormick, Cleveland and Pidgey Morgan, Troy Innings Pitched - 63 1/3, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Shutouts - 1, 3 players tied Walks - 18, John Schappert, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 31, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 3.46, Charley "Old Hoss" Radbourn, Providence Grays HR/9IP - 0.00, many players tied BB/9IP - 0.50, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans K/9IP - 7.00, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans K/BB Ratio - 14.00, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans Opp. Avg. - .119, Charley "Old Hoss" Radbourn, Providence Grays WHIP - 0.62, Charley "Old Hoss" Radbourn, Providence Grays VORP (Pitching) - 16.1, John Schappert, Cleveland Blues American Association St. Louis Brown Stockings 7-4 Philadelphia Athletics 5-3 Louisville Eclipse 6-5 Cincinnati Red Stockings 5-4 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 4-5 Baltimore Orioles 1-7 The AA is still sorting out who its strong teams are going to be, but one thing seems perfectly clear: Baltimore will not be one of them. The Orioles have been awful in every way: bad hitting, bad pitching, bad defense. Meanwhile, of the new young players, some standouts have emerged: all three members of Louisville's "local boy" outfield of Browning, Reccius and Wolf, Cincinnati's Bid McPhee and Charlie Comiskey of St. Louis. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .400, Chicken Wolf, Louisville Eclipse On-Base Percentage - .435, Lip Pike, Cincinnati Red Stockings Slugging Percentage - .581, Bid McPhee, Cincinnati Red Stockings OPS - .981, Bid McPhee, Cincinnati Red Stockings Hits - 22, Chicken Wolf, Louisville Eclipse Doubles - 5, Lip Pike, Cincinnati Red Stockings Triples - 3, Pete Browning, Louisville Eclipse Home Runs - 2, Charlie Hodes, Cincinnati and John Reccius, Louisville Extra Base Hits - 6, Dan Sullivan, Louisville Eclipse Total Bases - 27, Dan Sullivan, Louisville Eclipse Runs Batted In - 17, Bill Gleason, St. Louis Brown Stockings Runs Scored - 17, Charlie Comiskey, St. Louis and Al Thake, St. Louis Stolen Bases - 5, Charlie Comiskey, St. Louis Brown Stockings Walks - 6, Pete Browning, Louisville Eclipse Strikeouts - 9, Pete Browning, Louisville and Jack Manning, Pittsburgh RC/27 - 10.09, Bid McPhee, Cincinnati Red Stockings ISO - .209, Bid McPhee, Cincinnati Red Stockings VORP (Batting) - 6.9, Chicken Wolf, Louisville Eclipse Earned Run Average - 0.00, Doc Landis, Philadelphia Athletics Wins - 4, Bert Dorr, St. Louis Brown Stockings Losses - 5, Terry Larkin, Baltimore Orioles Saves - 1, 7 players tied Innings Pitched - 43 2/3, Bert Dorr, St. Louis Brown Stockings Shutouts - 0 Walks - 9, Harry Arundel, Cincinnati and Bobby Mathews, Cincinnati Strikeouts - 30, Bert Dorr, St. Louis Brown Stockings H/9IP - 5.00, Doc Landis, Philadelphia Athletics HR/9IP - 0.00, many players tied BB/9IP - 0.00, Doc Landis, Philadelphia and George Zettlein, Baltimore K/9IP - 6.94, Harry Arundel, Cincinnati Red Stockings K/BB Ratio - can't be computed for players with 0 walks Opp. Avg. - .143, Doc Landis, Philadelphia Athletics WHIP - 0.56, Doc Landis, Philadelphia Athletics VORP (Pitching) - 12.0, Dale Williams, Cincinnati Red Stockings

National League Boston Red Caps 12-5 Cleveland Blues 10-6 Detroit Wolverines 10-6 Troy Trojans 9-8 Chicago White Stockings 7-8 Providence Grays 6-10 Worcester Ruby Legs 6-10 Buffalo Bisons 4-11 Fueled by the strong start of superstar Cap Anson, Boston continues to pace the National League, although they closed the week with back-to-back losses against Providence. This week, they will have one more game against Providence, then three against last-place Buffalo. Meanwhile, Cleveland only managed a split in their four-game series against Buffalo last week, as did Detroit against the Chicago White Stockings. However, both of them will against be battling against second-division teams this week, so they are hoping to keep pace with the Red Caps. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .391, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans On-Base Percentage - .449, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Slugging Percentage - .590, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps OPS - 1.008, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Hits - 28, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 7, Jim Foran, Cleveland and Pete Hotaling, Detroit Triples - 6, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Home Runs - 3, Tom Burns, Chicago and Harry Stovey, Worcester Extra Base Hits - 10, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Total Bases - 46, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Runs Batted In - 19, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Runs Scored - 23, Cap Anson, Boston and John Reilly, Detroit Stolen Bases - 8, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 9, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Strikeouts - 15, Fred Lewis, Boston Red Caps RC/27 - 10.77, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps ISO - .231, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps VORP (Batting) - 11.2, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.00, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans Wins - 6, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Losses - 7, Bill McGunnigle, Buffalo Bisons Saves - 2, Jim McCormick, Cleveland and Pidgey Morgan, Troy Innings Pitched - 80 1/3, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Shutouts - 1, 4 players tied Walks - 23, John Schappert, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 38, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 6.97, John Schappert, Cleveland Blues HR/9IP - 0.00, 5 players tied BB/9IP - 0.50, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans K/9IP - 7.00, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans K/BB Ratio - 14.00, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans Opp. Avg. - .198, John Schappert, Cleveland Blues WHIP - 0.89, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans VORP (Pitching) - 17.4, John Schappert, Cleveland Blues American Association St. Louis Brown Stockings 11-4 Louisville Eclipse 6-5 Cincinnati Red Stockings 6-7 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 4-5 Philadelphia Athletics 5-7 Baltimore Orioles 4-8 Ralph Ham of Cincinnati, previously a journeyman of rather indifferent ability, has caught fire in the new AA. Over his last 33 at-bats covering eight games, he has 18 hits, to move him to the front in many offensive categories. Ham is a career .275 hitter whose previous best season was in 1872, when he hit .333 for the Eckford club of Brooklyn. St. Louis continues to look far better than the rest of the new Association as a team, as they are the one club that is strong in all three areas - hitting, pitching and defense. June 4, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Red Caps 14-7 Detroit Wolverines 12-7 Cleveland Blues 12-8 Troy Trojans 11-10 Chicago White Stockings 9-10 Providence Grays 8-13 Worcester Ruby Legs 8-13 Buffalo Bisons 7-13 The National League standings remained in a holding pattern this week, as nearly all of the top teams split their games against second-division clubs. This week, though, should be interesting, as Boston takes on both Detroit and Cleveland. Anson, Barnes and the rest of the Boston crew have a chance to put some distance between themselves and the other contenders, but those contenders also will have an opportunity to sneak into the top spot. In individual achievements, Anson and Troy's Big Dan Brouthers are absolutely dominating basically all offensive categories. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .407, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans On-Base Percentage - .464, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Slugging Percentage - .628, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans OPS - 1.092, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Hits - 36, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 9, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons Triples - 6, Cap Anson, Boston and Dan Brouthers, Troy Home Runs - 3, Tom Burns, Chicago and Harry Stovey, Worcester Extra Base Hits - 12, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Total Bases - 58, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Runs Batted In - 21, Cap Anson, Boston and Ross Barnes, Boston Runs Scored - 30, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Stolen Bases - 11, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 10, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 17, Fred Lewis, Boston Red Caps RC/27 - 12.02, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans ISO - .232, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps VORP (Batting) - 15.3, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.45, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans Wins - 8, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Losses - 8, Bill McGunnigle, Buffalo and Harry Wheeler, Providence Saves - 2, 3 players tied Innings Pitched - 98 1/3, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Shutouts - 2, Tommy Bond, Detroit and Harry Wheeler, Providence Walks - 26, John Schappert, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 48, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 6.60, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons HR/9IP - 0.00, 5 players tied BB/9IP - 1.01, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps K/9IP - 5.01, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs K/BB Ratio - 3.83, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .194, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans WHIP - 0.97, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans VORP (Pitching) - 21.2, Harry Wheeler, Providence Grays American Association St. Louis Brown Stockings 13-5 Louisville Eclipse 7-6 Cincinnati Red Stockings 9-9 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 5-7 Philadelphia Athletics 7-10 Baltimore Orioles 5-9 As St. Louis continues to lead the AA by a wide margin, one of the most important statistics in the league is that the upstart "Beer and Whiskey League" is leading the senior circuit in the important attendance per game category. On the field, only Louisville and Cincinnati seem to have the firepower to compete with St. Louis, and neither of them have fielders who are nearly as good as the Brown Stockings. It appears that this western-oriented league will have the westernmost champion base ball has ever seen. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .405, Ralph Ham, Cincinnati Red Stockings On-Base Percentage - .443, Deacon White, Pittsburgh Alleghenys Slugging Percentage - .500, Ralph Ham, Cincinnati and Deacon White, Pittsburgh OPS - .943, Deacon White, Pittsburgh Alleghenys Hits - 34, Ralph Ham, Cincinnati Red Stockings Doubles - 5, 4 players tied Triples - 3, Pete Browning, Louisville and Bill Gleason, St. Louis Home Runs - 2, Charlie Hodes, Cincinnati and John Reccius, Louisville Extra Base Hits - 8, Lip Pike, Cincinnati Red Stockings Total Bases - 42, Ralph Ham, Cincinnati Red Stockings Runs Batted In - 24, Bill Gleason, St. Louis Brown Stockings Runs Scored - 28, Al Thake, St. Louis Brown Stockings Stolen Bases - 8, Charlie Comiskey, St. Louis Brown Stockings Walks - 8, Pete Browning, Louisville Eclipse Strikeouts - 14, Bid McPhee, Cincinnati Red Stockings RC/27 - 8.92, Deacon White, Pittsburgh Alleghenys ISO - .169, Dan Sullivan, Louisville Eclipse VORP (Batting) - 7.8, Jud Birchall, Philadelphia Athletics Earned Run Average - 0.98, Dale Williams, Cincinnati Red Stockings Wins - 5, Bert Dorr, St. Louis and Jumbo McGinnis, St. Louis Losses - 7, Terry Larkin, Baltimore Orioles Saves - 2, John Cassidy, Louisville and Eddie Hogan, St. Louis Innings Pitched - 69 1/3, Pud Galvin, Philadelphia Athletics Shutouts - 1, Terry Larkin, Baltimore Orioles Walks - 17, Harry Arundel, Cincinnati Red Stockings Strikeouts - 37, Pud Galvin, Philadelphia Athletics H/9IP - 6.08, Len Lovett, Pittsburgh Alleghenys HR/9IP - 0.00, 8 players tied BB/9IP - 0.00, George Zettlein, Baltimore Orioles K/9IP - 6.20, Bert Dorr, St. Louis Brown Stockings K/BB Ratio - can't be computed for players with 0 walks Opp. Avg. - .158, Len Lovett, Pittsburgh Alleghenys WHIP - 0.75, Len Lovett, Pittsburgh Alleghenys VORP (Pitching) - 15.2, John "Lefty" McMullin, Pittsburgh Alleghenys

Interestingly, the second-year Detroit Wolverines seem to be the leading contender for the top spot. National League Boston Red Caps 21-9 Detroit Wolverines 18-10 Cleveland Blues 15-14 Providence Grays 14-15 Worcester Ruby Legs 13-16 Chicago White Stockings 11-16 Troy Trojans 12-18 Buffalo Bisons 11-17 Cleveland's recent slump threatens to turn the National League into a two-team race, as longtime doormat Providence nearly snuck into third place in the NL this week. Boston already swept the Blues in a three-game series earlier this month, and now they will be heading to the Forest City to try to knock them into the second division this week. Meanwhile, Detroit will be testing whether Providence is as good as their recent 7-2 surge would indicate. Also, Charlie Eden of the Chicago White Stockings had a big game this week, going 5 for 5 and hitting for the cycle against the Boston Red Caps. He is the fourth player ever to hit for the cycle, and the first since Art Allison did it on October 4, 1876. July 2, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Red Caps 25-14 Detroit Wolverines 23-14 Cleveland Blues 21-17 Providence Grays 20-17 Troy Trojans 16-22 Worcester Ruby Legs 16-22 Chicago White Stockings 15-22 Buffalo Bisons 14-22 Boston continues to hold its narrow lead over Detroit and Cleveland, but there's a surprising new team in the first division. Going into this season, Providence had been at or near the bottom of the NL standings in every year of the club's existence. They were so bad that their move into sixth place last season marked a significant achievement for the club. All of a sudden, they appear to be changing the culture in Rhode Island. Providence doesn't have any big stars, so they aren't likely to seriously contend for the pennant this year, but for once there is real hope for the future. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .370, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans On-Base Percentage - .416, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Slugging Percentage - .580, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans OPS - .996, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Hits - 63, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 12, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons Triples - 10, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons Home Runs - 4, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines Extra Base Hits - 23, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons Total Bases - 94, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Runs Batted In - 35, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines Runs Scored - 43, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Stolen Bases - 15, Arlie Latham, Buffalo and John Reilly, Detroit Walks - 18, 3 players tied Strikeouts - 27, Emil Gross, Providence Grays RC/27 - 9.70, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans ISO - .230, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Batting) - 24.3, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Earned Run Average - 1.83, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans Wins - 13, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines Losses - 14, George Bradley, Troy Trojans Saves - 3, Dory Dean, Worcester and Jim McCormick, Cleveland Innings Pitched - 185 1/3, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Shutouts - 2, Tommy Bond, Detroit and Harry Wheeler, Providence Walks - 39, George Bradley, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 97, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 8.13, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons HR/9IP - 0.00, Tom Healey, Providence and Pat McManus, Troy BB/9IP - 1.02, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans K/9IP - 5.37, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons K/BB Ratio - 3.40, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .218, George Derby, Detroit Wolverines WHIP - 1.09, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 33.5, Harry Wheeler, Providence Grays American Association St. Louis Brown Stockings 23-10 Baltimore Orioles 16-12 Louisville Eclipse 15-12 Cincinnati Red Stockings 14-17 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 11-16 Philadelphia Athletics 10-22 Over in the AA, Baltimore has overcome a slow start to become a contender for the top spot. I am, before and after being BANED, enjoying this replay. One question, though: how are you dealing with stuffs like VORP? I know that whenever I play something pre-1960, I create all sorts of customized display sheets so I can try and pretend I don't know what VORP or for that matter BABIP or OBP or SLG are. Or ERA, for that matter. I don't think it was recorded at all until the mid-1900s and even then it was considered a tricksy mom's-basement stat for a while. I always end up breaking down, though, because when you open up player cards there's VORP and OBP and ERA right there, staring at you, making it impossible for you to justify playing the guy who's hitting an empty .300 because he also has lots of RBIs and is a pleasure to have in the clubhouse. To even *see* if the guy is a pleasure to have in the clubhouse you have to click on the card!

ERA was indeed a mom's-basement stat when it was created by John Heydler in 1912. But there are some very specific reasons for that; earned runs were already being used by many sportswriters in the same way they are today as early as the 1880s. The problem was that Henry Chadwick, who was sort of the uber-Joe Morgan of the time, HATED earned runs, refused to print anything having to do with them, and lobbied aggressively against their use. (His preferred pitching stat was wins and losses. While I don't think that's nearly as useful as ERA, one thing I've learned replaying the 1870s and 1880s is that he isn't as wrong as he seems. There were a lot of unearned runs back then, and W-L is almost as helpful as ERA for 1880s pitchers.) Once he died in 1908, the field was clear to start using earned runs more, and Heydler was the first one to actually turn in into earned runs per game so relievers and starters could theoretically be gauged on the same index. As for the question of VORP and other sophisticated stats, I do look at them, but it's more for my enjoyment than anything else. I don't have anything to do with the playing time teams give their players; in fact, there have been a few cases where teams have started clearly inferior players, IMO. The only way in which I use VORP is to narrow the field of MVP candidates down to the top ten or so players at the end of the season. I use my own judgment as to the final award (for example, last year's NL MVH, Ross Barnes, was something like second or third in VORP), but VORP helps me quickly decide on credible candidates. In fact, one of the things I've enjoyed the most is the perspective this game has given me on old-time stats. It's easy to scoff at the preeminence of batting average as a hitting stat.* But in the 1870s and early 1880s, batting average was actually a great predictor of how well a hitter performed: extra base hits were less common, and walks were quite rare. It's just that the game evolved faster than its statistics, so today idiots like Joe Morgan use outdated stats. So I don't mind having a glance at modern stats. I'm always interested in which direction the baseball universe will take. Right now, I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about whether to add the Union Association and wondering where all of the Troy and Worcester players will end up next year when I disband them and add Columbus and New York in the AA, and the precursors of the Giants and Phillies in the NL. * - "We tend to scoff at the beliefs of the ancients. But we can't scoff at them personally, to their faces, and this is what annoys me."

Yeah... another thing about wins and losses in your period is that guys always or nearly always finished games they started, so there's very little chance for someone else to vulture victories or turn a close game into a loss. Ironically, earned runs, if anything, would have meant more back then than they do now; I think nowadays there's a sense that very few pitchers have the ability to prevent earned runs who don't also have the ability to prevent runs; back then, though, when errors were through the roof, it made a great deal of sense to separate the runs a pitcher was responsible for and those he wasn't.
I notice that I am seeing none of the "average and over" for your players. WHERE IS THE MODULUS

July 9, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Red Caps 28-14 Detroit Wolverines 23-18 Providence Grays 23-18 Cleveland Blues 21-20 Troy Trojans 19-23 Buffalo Bisons 18-22 Chicago White Stockings 16-24 Worcester Ruby Legs 16-25 And we've reached the halfway point of the 1882 season, with Boston looking very good following their sweep of the Detroit Wolverines. However, they are getting some pressure from a very unlikely source: the Providence Grays. Providence started the season in their usual fashion, quickly falling into the second division with an 8-14 record through 22 games. However, since then the team has been an astonishing 15-4, and they are now tied for second place. If they can continue to play first-rate base ball, Boston may be in for a fight. The half-season awards: MVH: Dan Brouthers, Troy (2-28-.377-11). His team may be a disappointment, but he certainly hasn't been. Amazingly, he's still only 24 years old, so there's room to improve. Honorable mention: Cap Anson, Boston (2-36-.362-12); Ross Barnes, Boston (3-36-.355-5). Cartwright Award: Curry Foley, Boston (13-7, 2.36). He never seems to get recognized as a great pitcher, but he has the Red Caps in position to return to the top of the National League. Honorable mention: Larry Corcoran, Chicago (12-10, 2.43); Tommy Bond, Detroit (13-9, 2.53). Rookie of the Year: Sam Wise, Detroit (0-15-.274-5). This slick-fielding middle infielder has improved the Wolverines on both offense and defense. Honorable mention: John Schappert, Cleveland (6-6, 2.83); John Irwin, Worcester (0-8-.264-2). Surprise of the Year: Pete Hotaling, Detroit (4-36-.352-0). He'd never hit above .276 before this season, and suddenly he's having an MVH-type season. Honorable mention: Joe Sommer, Providence (1-24-.298-7); Charlie Eden, Chicago (1-18-.296-0). Disappointment of the Year: George Wood, Worcester (0-18-.199-0). He was supposed to be a rising star, but so far he's shown little of that promise. Dishonorable mention: Mike Dorgan, Boston (1-14-.211-2); Frank McCarton, Providence (1-11-.241-1). The current league leaders: Batting Average - .377, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans On-Base Percentage - .417, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Slugging Percentage - .601, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans OPS - 1.018, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Hits - 69, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Doubles - 13, Dan Brouthers, Troy and Frank Selman, Buffalo Triples - 11, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Home Runs - 4, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines Extra Base Hits - 26, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Total Bases - 110, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Runs Batted In - 36, 3 players tied Runs Scored - 44, Cap Anson, Boston and John Reilly, Detroit Stolen Bases - 18, Arlie Latham, Buffalo Bisons Walks - 20, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 30, Emil Gross, Providence Grays RC/27 - 10.22, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans ISO - .224, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans VORP (Batting) - 28.4, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Earned Run Average - 1.63, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans Wins - 13, Tommy Bond, Detroit and Curry Foley, Boston Losses - 14, George Bradley, Troy and Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Saves - 3, Dory Dean, Worcester and Jim McCormick, Cleveland Innings Pitched - 200 1/3, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Shutouts - 2, Tommy Bond, Detroit and Harry Wheeler, Providence Walks - 45, George Bradley, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 114, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.57, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans HR/9IP - 0.00, Tom Healey, Providence and Pat McManus, Troy BB/9IP - 0.91, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans K/9IP - 5.52, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans K/BB Ratio - 3.33, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .213, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans WHIP - 1.07, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans VORP (Pitching) - 38.1, Harry Wheeler, Providence Grays American Association St. Louis Brown Stockings 24-14 Louisville Eclipse 20-13 Baltimore Orioles 17-14 Cincinnati Red Stockings 16-20 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 13-17 Philadelphia Athletics 12-24 Although St. Louis continues to lead the AA as they have all season, it's getting to be quite a battle. St. Louis has been only 7-9 over their last 16 games, so there is a possible opening for Louisville or even Baltimore. However, Louisville will be hindered in this battle by a couple of recent injuries. Both Guy Hecker and Chicken Wolf went onto the 60-day disabled list this week with serious injuries. It is not yet known whether either will be back this season, but fortunately neither injury is considered career-threatening. The half-season awards: MVH: Charlie Comiskey, St. Louis (1-17-.313-14). This scrappy infielder leads the AA in runs scored, and is helping lead his team to the top of the standings. Honorable mention: Tom Brown, Baltimore (2-26-.338-0); Pete Browning, Louisville (1-25-.315-6). Cartwright Award: Jumbo McGinnis, St. Louis (8-5, 1.44). He's been nearly unhittable so far this season, so even though he's only his team's #2 starter, he's the league's best. Honorable mention: Bert Dorr, St. Louis (10-5, 2.24); John "Lefty" McMullin, Pittsburgh (7-10, 1.36). Rookie of the Year: Charlie Comiskey, St. Louis (1-17-.313-14). He looks like he'll be a star for years to come. Honorable mention: Jumbo McGinnis, St. Louis (8-5, 1.44); Tom Brown, Baltimore (2-26-.338-0). July 16, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Red Caps 30-16 Detroit Wolverines 26-19 Providence Grays 26-19 Cleveland Blues 24-21 Buffalo Bisons 20-24 Troy Trojans 19-26 Worcester Ruby Legs 18-26 Chicago White Stockings 16-28 Providence continues to look great, but their biggest test will be this week, as they take on Boston for a three-game set. So far this season, the Red Caps have taken 5 of 7 from the Grays. If they can continue this dominance, Boston should buy themselves a little breathing room. Individually, this season is the first in quite some time where all the offensive categories weren't led by Anson or Barnes. To be sure, both of them are doing quite well, but Dan Brouthers and Pete Hotaling have begun to overshadow their more renowned rivals. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .364, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans On-Base Percentage - .402, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Slugging Percentage - .571, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans OPS - .973, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Hits - 72, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Doubles - 13, 4 players tied Triples - 11, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Home Runs - 5, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines Extra Base Hits - 26, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Total Bases - 113, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Runs Batted In - 41, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines Runs Scored - 48, Cap Anson, Boston and John Reilly, Detroit Stolen Bases - 19, Arlie Latham, Buffalo Bisons Walks - 22, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 33, Emil Gross, Providence Grays RC/27 - 9.22, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans ISO - .207, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans VORP (Batting) - 27.5, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Earned Run Average - 1.58, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans Wins - 15, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Losses - 15, 3 players tied Saves - 3, Dory Dean, Worcester and Jim McCormick, Cleveland Innings Pitched - 220, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Shutouts - 2, Tommy Bond, Detroit and Harry Wheeler, Providence Walks - 48, George Bradley, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 125, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.86, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons HR/9IP - 0.00, Pat McManus, Troy Trojans BB/9IP - 0.79, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans K/9IP - 5.75, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans K/BB Ratio - 3.36, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .221, George Derby, Detroit Wolverines WHIP - 1.07, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans VORP (Pitching) - 43.9, Harry Wheeler, Providence Grays American Association Louisville Eclipse 25-13 St. Louis Brown Stockings 26-17 Baltimore Orioles 19-17 Cincinnati Red Stockings 19-21 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 15-20 Philadelphia Athletics 12-28 With Pete Browning of Louisville hitting everything that's thrown at him and St. Louis slumping, the Eclipse has snuck into first place in the AA. National League Boston Red Caps 33-16 Detroit Wolverines 28-21 Cleveland Blues 27-22 Providence Grays 26-23 Buffalo Bisons 22-26 Worcester Ruby Legs 21-27 Troy Trojans 20-28 Chicago White Stockings 17-31 Providence got a real eye-opener this week, as Boston swept them in their three-game series. With that dominating victory, Boston looks significantly better than their three rivals for the National League crown. There have been three significant transactions in the past week or so. First, Buffalo resigned their overpaid catcher Frank Selman (1-30-.234-3) to another big four-year contract extension. This should leave them basically unable to make any big changes and many observers think it means Buffalo will be a second-division team for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, Buffalo and Providence made a player trade that could help both teams. Buffalo sent utilityman Jack Rowe to Providence and got back second baseman Jack "Moose" Farrell, who was languishing on the Grays' bench. Since the trade, Rowe has played three different positions for Providence and is hitting a solid .273, while Farrell has been installed as the Bisons' new second baseman, though he's hit only .111 so far. Also, for the first time we had a trade between leagues. Worcester decided to send its unneeded outfielder Jerry Dorgan to the Philadelphia Athletics in exchange for pitcher Doc Landis. While Landis hasn't yet appeared in a game for Worcester, Dorgan has hit .361 for Philadelphia. If this keeps up, the AA club will be the clear winner in this deal. July 30, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Red Caps 36-18 Detroit Wolverines 32-22 Providence Grays 30-24 Cleveland Blues 29-24 Buffalo Bisons 25-27 Troy Trojans 23-30 Worcester Ruby Legs 21-32 Chicago White Stockings 17-36 A very eventful week in the NL this week. First of all, there were three trades, two of which sent infielders to AA teams. First, the Buffalo Bisons sent Dude Esterbrook, a versatile utility player, to the St. Louis club in exchange for a backup pitcher. Esterbrook paid immediate dividends for his new team, going 7 for 15 this week and giving them improved defense at third base. Buffalo made up for this somewhat inexplicable trade by getting infielder George Creamer from the Cleveland Blues one day later. Creamer has been made the new starting second baseman and has gone 3 for 6 in the two games he's played for Buffalo. The final trade brought Worcester some much-needed cash, as they shipped Hick Carpenter to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. Carpenter is expected to be a major part of the short-handed Alleghenys' offense. Finally, the major leagues saw their first career-ending injury this week, as shortstop Arthur "Doc" Irwin of the Worcester Ruby Legs suffered a shoulder injury that will end his base ball career at the age of 24. In three seasons, Irwin hit .241 for the Ruby Legs. His defense in particularly will be sorely missed. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .370, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps On-Base Percentage - .416, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Slugging Percentage - .538, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans OPS - .917, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Hits - 88, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 17, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Triples - 13, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Home Runs - 5, Pete Hotaling, Detroit and Harry Stovey, Worcester Extra Base Hits - 29, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Total Bases - 128, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Runs Batted In - 49, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines Runs Scored - 57, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Stolen Bases - 21, Tom Poorman, Buffalo Bisons Walks - 28, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 38, Emil Gross, Providence and Sam Wise, Detroit RC/27 - 8.35, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines ISO - .193, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans VORP (Batting) - 28.2, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.58, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans Wins - 18, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Losses - 19, Charlie Guth, Chicago and Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Saves - 4, Jim McCormick, Cleveland Blues Innings Pitched - 250 1/3, Harry Wheeler, Providence Grays Shutouts - 2, Tommy Bond, Detroit and Harry Wheeler, Providence Walks - 55, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 140, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 8.02, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons HR/9IP - 0.00, Pat McManus, Troy Trojans BB/9IP - 0.79, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans K/9IP - 6.48, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans K/BB Ratio - 3.91, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .221, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps WHIP - 1.05, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 48.8, Harry Wheeler, Providence Grays American Association Louisville Eclipse 28-14 St. Louis Brown Stockings 28-22 Baltimore Orioles 22-21 Cincinnati Red Stockings 21-24 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 18-22 Philadelphia Athletics 15-29 Louisville is in the middle of 12 days off from their Association schedule. August 6, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Red Caps 39-18 Detroit Wolverines 33-23 Providence Grays 32-26 Cleveland Blues 31-26 Buffalo Bisons 27-28 Troy Trojans 24-32 Worcester Ruby Legs 22-34 Chicago White Stockings 17-38 Now that the deadline for teams to swap players has come and gone, it looks like Boston is well on its way to a third pennant in four years. This week, two of the team's established stars - second baseman Ross Barnes and pitcher Curry Foley - both had extraordinarily good weeks to allow Boston to extend the lead. Meanwhile, there is one other player approaching the 1,000 hit mark for his career. This season, Cleveland first baseman Jim Foran has the opportunity to become the fifth person ever to reach 1,000 hits. Foran now has 970 career hits with about two months left in the season. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .378, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps On-Base Percentage - .424, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Slugging Percentage - .532, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans OPS - .926, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Hits - 95, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 17, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Triples - 14, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Home Runs - 5, Pete Hotaling, Detroit and Harry Stovey, Worcester Extra Base Hits - 30, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Total Bases - 132, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Runs Batted In - 53, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Runs Scored - 60, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Stolen Bases - 22, Tom Poorman, Buffalo and John Reilly, Detroit Walks - 28, Cap Anson, Boston and Roger Connor, Troy Strikeouts - 39, Sam Wise, Detroit Wolverines RC/27 - 8.96, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps ISO - .194, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans VORP (Batting) - 31.8, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.77, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans Wins - 21, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Losses - 20, George Bradley, Troy and Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Saves - 4, Jim McCormick, Cleveland Blues Innings Pitched - 278, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Shutouts - 2, Tommy Bond, Detroit and Harry Wheeler, Providence Walks - 58, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 145, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.96, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps HR/9IP - 0.00, Pat McManus, Troy Trojans BB/9IP - 0.74, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans K/9IP - 6.48, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans K/BB Ratio - 3.88, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .217, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps WHIP - 1.03, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 53.9, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps American Association Louisville Eclipse 28-16 St. Louis Brown Stockings 32-22 Baltimore Orioles 25-21 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 21-24 Cincinnati Red Stockings 21-28 Philadelphia Athletics 16-32 Suddenly, Louisville is faltering, and it looks like we may have a pennant race in the new league after all. Louisville looks like a strong team, but Baltimore and St. Louis are both in hot pursuit of the first AA pennant. National League Boston Red Caps 43-18 Detroit Wolverines 35-24 Providence Grays 33-28 Cleveland Blues 31-29 Buffalo Bisons 30-29 Troy Trojans 25-34 Worcester Ruby Legs 23-37 Chicago White Stockings 19-40 Boston is on an absolute tear and has won nine games in a row. With only 24 games left in their season, they have a seven game lead over the second-place Detroit club, so they are getting awfully close to wrapping up their third National League pennant. This week, they host the NL's second-hottest team of late - the Buffalo Bisons. Meanwhile, the Chicago White Stockings have completely bottomed out. They are the worst team in the National League, and with two of their top players planning on leaving this offseason, it may be a while before they're able to be competitive in the NL. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .372, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps On-Base Percentage - .419, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Slugging Percentage - .523, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans OPS - .910, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Hits - 100, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 17, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Triples - 14, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Home Runs - 5, Pete Hotaling, Detroit and Harry Stovey, Worcester Extra Base Hits - 31, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Total Bases - 137, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Runs Batted In - 55, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Runs Scored - 65, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Stolen Bases - 24, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 31, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Strikeouts - 41, Emil Gross, Providence and Sam Wise, Detroit RC/27 - 8.63, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps ISO - .195, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans VORP (Batting) - 32.9, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.69, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans Wins - 21, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Losses - 22, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 4, Jim McCormick, Cleveland Blues Innings Pitched - 297 2/3, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Shutouts - 3, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 63, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 165, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.93, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons HR/9IP - 0.00, Pat McManus, Troy Trojans BB/9IP - 0.70, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans K/9IP - 6.39, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans K/BB Ratio - 3.93, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .221, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps WHIP - 1.04, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 54.5, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps American Association Louisville Eclipse 31-16 St. Louis Brown Stockings 35-23 Baltimore Orioles 27-23 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 23-26 Cincinnati Red Stockings 22-31 Philadelphia Athletics 16-35 Louisville continues its winning ways and remains ahead of the rest of the Association, primarily because of the amazing season young Pete Browning is having. In addition, Louisville's John Glenn is in the midst of a 21-game hitting streak, the longest in the league so far this season. August 20, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Red Caps 44-20 Detroit Wolverines 39-24 Providence Grays 33-31 Buffalo Bisons 32-30 Cleveland Blues 32-31 Troy Trojans 26-36 Worcester Ruby Legs 25-38 Chicago White Stockings 20-41 Boston had a losing record for the week for the first time in two months, and suddenly there is a faint ray of hope for the Detroit Wolverines, who are on a four-game winning streak. Detroit heads to Boston for a three-game series this week, and if they can knock off the Red Caps, we may have a fight to the finish in the National League this season. To make matters worse, Boston lost its talented center fielder John O'Rourke for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury. Now they have to come up with a replacement on the fly while fending off Pete Hotaling and the red-hot Detroit club. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .359, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps On-Base Percentage - .406, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Slugging Percentage - .517, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines OPS - .900, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines Hits - 101, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 18, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Triples - 14, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Home Runs - 6, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines Extra Base Hits - 31, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Total Bases - 141, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Runs Batted In - 57, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines Runs Scored - 72, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Stolen Bases - 24, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 32, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 43, Sam Wise, Detroit Wolverines RC/27 - 8.09, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines ISO - .186, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans VORP (Batting) - 31.6, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Earned Run Average - 1.63, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans Wins - 22, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Losses - 22, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 4, Jim McCormick, Cleveland Blues Innings Pitched - 306 2/3, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Shutouts - 3, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 63, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 173, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.26, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Red Caps HR/9IP - 0.00, Pat McManus, Troy Trojans BB/9IP - 0.75, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans K/9IP - 6.29, Tim Keefe, Troy Trojans K/BB Ratio - 3.97, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .200, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Red Caps WHIP - 1.04, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 57.3, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps American Association Louisville Eclipse 35-17 St. Louis Brown Stockings 37-24 Baltimore Orioles 28-25 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 24-30 Cincinnati Red Stockings 24-31 Philadelphia Athletics 17-38 Pete Browning of Louisville continues to be incredibly dominant in the new AA this season, yet he's not even the big story on his own team at the moment. That honor belongs to career journeyman John Glenn, who has been an adequate but unspectacular 1B-OF for over a decade. He's played in Washington, DC (with two different National Association clubs), Baltimore, Boston (in the pre-Big Three era), Hartford, Providence, and now Louisville, yet has never won a championship and rarely been on a winning team. Right now, though, Glenn is on a startling hitting streak. His previous career high was a 12-game streak, but right now he has hit safely in 26 straight games, culminating this week in a ninth-inning, walk-off hit to end an 0 for 4 drought. Not only is this the longest hitting streak of the year so far, it's one of the longest in modern (post-1875) baseball: Levi Meyerle, Chicago - 34 games (1877) John Bass, Chicago - 28 games (1876) Dan Brouthers, Troy - 27 games (1879) John Glenn, Louisville - 26 games (1882) Ross Barnes, Boston - 26 games (1881) Mike Dorgan, Boston - 26 games (1879) The all-time record, 42 games, was set by Cap Anson over 1875-76 while playing for the Brooklyn Atlantics and Hartford Dark Blues. Hey Eck,
Are you using ootp9 now? If so what are your fielding errors in strategy set at? I let the computer import settings but till 1900 i have been lowering it by 3. So far from 1871-1878 I still have a few .400 hitters but i couldnt accept Scott Hastings having 179 errors in a 60 game season. Oh and whats your active roster size? Mine was 16. I went to 18 in 1876. Anyways its good to see your league is still going. I forgot if you play ever game or sim the season. Just keep going. 1900 will be there soon and then hey its only 108 more years to go. |

I haven't messed with roster size much. I wasn't sure how the game would handle it, so I'm just letting them use a full 25-man roster. I am playing out every game, sort of. I sim to the seventh inning of each game and then play out all the close ones. Took a bit of a break, but this league is still going strong...
September 3, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report National League Boston Red Caps 47-23 Detroit Wolverines 42-26 Buffalo Bisons 36-32 Cleveland Blues 35-33 Providence Grays 35-35 Troy Trojans 29-39 Chicago White Stockings 25-43 Worcester Ruby Legs 25-43 With Boston holding a solid lead in the NL, the new controversy is what the league will look like next season. With the death of President William Hulbert, the NL has no strong force opposing the return of base ball to the nation's two largest cities, New York and Philadelphia. Thus, the league is expected to return there next season. However, it is currently uncertain whether they will expand to a 10-team league or eliminate two existing clubs. If the latter option is chosen, Providence, Troy and Worcester seem to be the most logical choices - all are small cities with teams that have never been in serious contention for the pennant. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .352, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps On-Base Percentage - .401, Cap Anson, Boston Red Caps Slugging Percentage - .542, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans OPS - .926, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Hits - 108, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 19, 3 players tied Triples - 17, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Home Runs - 6, Pete Hotaling, Detroit Wolverines Extra Base Hits - 36, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Total Bases - 163, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Runs Batted In - 61, Ross Barnes, Boston Red Caps Runs Scored - 76, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Stolen Bases - 27, Arlie Latham, Buffalo and John Reilly, Detroit Walks - 35, Roger Connor, Troy Trojans Strikeouts - 47, Emil Gross, Providence and Sam Wise, Detroit RC/27 - 8.19, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans ISO - .196, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans VORP (Batting) - 35.5, Dan Brouthers, Troy Trojans Earned Run Average - 1.86, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans Wins - 24, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Losses - 26, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Saves - 4, Jim McCormick, Cleveland Blues Innings Pitched - 322 2/3, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps Shutouts - 3, Tommy Bond, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 68, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 187, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 7.65, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons HR/9IP - 0.00, Pat McManus, Troy Trojans BB/9IP - 0.62, Pidgey Morgan, Troy Trojans K/9IP - 6.39, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons K/BB Ratio - 4.21, Bobby Mitchell, Worcester Ruby Legs Opp. Avg. - .212, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Red Caps WHIP - 1.04, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps VORP (Pitching) - 62.4, Curry Foley, Boston Red Caps American Association Louisville Eclipse 41-21 St. Louis Brown Stockings 43-27 Baltimore Orioles 32-29 Cincinnati Red Stockings 28-35 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 28-36 Philadelphia Athletics 20-44 John Glenn's hitting streak finally ended this week, but not until he matched Levi Meyerle's 34 games. An amazing streak for a relatively unknown player. The big question remaining in the AA is whether Pete Browning's bat can continue to carry Louisville to the pennant over the outstanding pitching of St. Louis. In other news, the AA has announced that it will add two clubs for next season - one from New York City, and one from Columbus, Ohio. They expect to have eight teams on board for the 1883 campaign.
