NEW YORK METROPOLITANS (new team)
For the most part, this new AA team did an excellent job of assembling a competitive club. They have a few holes, and desperately need a middle infielder or two, but may actually do pretty well in the American Association this season. 34 C John Clapp (1-37-.238-3 with Baltimore; lifetime .260 hitter) - Did an okay job with the Orioles last year, but did not get rewarded with a new contract. Great defense at catcher. 15 1B Dave Orr (rookie) - A 23-year-old who looks rather promising. 20 2B Andy Leonard (0-44-.243-7 with Providence; lifetime .287 hitter) - A great pickup on a one-year deal. He'll turn 37 in June, so he's not in their long-term plans. 17 SS Clipper Flynn (0-32-.254-0 with Worcester; lifetime .288 hitter) - When they had trouble finding a real shortstop, they turned to this 34-year-old veteran who's never played the position before. This does not exactly seem like a recipe for success. 14 3B Roger Connor (3-69-.296-1 with Troy; lifetime .290 hitter) - A budding star who goes from being Dan Brouthers' teammate to his cross-town rival. 13 LF Ed Kennedy (rookie) - An untested young man who really only needs to be adequate. 33 OF Charlie Reipschlager (rookie) - He'll probably pick up some playing time as a fourth outfielder. 40 CF "Hartford Jack" Farrell (0-36-.266-0 with Troy; lifetime .266 hitter) - Did a very good job with the Trojans for the past four years, and now takes his act to Gotham. 37 RF Gat Stires (0-1-.188-1 with Worcester; lifetime .265 hitter) - He last played regularly in 1878, so this is something of a gamble. 10 RF Jackie Hayes (1-5-.210-0 with Worcester as a rookie) - He and Stires will likely battle for playing time. 35 LHP John Cassidy (14-8, 1.83 with Louisville in 1882; lifetime 52-39 record) - He was a solid second pitcher with the pennant winners last year, and now will get a chance at the top job. 32 RHP Mickey Welch (4-2, 2.39 with Troy in 1882; lifetime 6-7 record) - Has some potential, and this season he should get a chance to fulfill it.

PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS (23-52 in 1882)
They were a terrible team in 1882, yet they are bringing back almost the identical lineup for 1883. Look for them to again be at or near the bottom of the standings. 39 C Jack O'Brien (3-53-.282-0) - He had an excellent rookie year splitting time between catcher and first base. This season, they're planning on using him exclusively as a catcher. 36 1B Bill Tobin (rookie) - One of three mediocre-looking players who'll get a look at first base. 31 1B Joe Straub (rookie) - Scouts say he might be the best of the guys at first, although his natural position is catcher. 9 1B Bill Kienzle (0-5-.148-0) - An outfielder who couldn't hit in 1882, but he may get a new look at first base. 24 2B Cub Stricker (0-29-.221-1) - He looks like a no-hit, good-field, infielder, which would be okay if they had a few more hitters on this club. 8 SS Bill Greenwood (0-21-.187-15) - Just a dreadful hitter who they should be trying to replace. 19 SS Asa Stratton (rookie) - He's been kicking around for a couple years trying to find a team that will play him, and may have hit the jackpot here; they don't exactly have a lot of options at shortstop. 79 3B Bob Blakiston (0-27-.199-0) - This Californian isn't much of a hitter or a fielder, but he's what they've got at third base. 18 LF Jud Birchall (0-46-.275-0) - One of the few Philadelphia players who looks like a legitimate big leaguer. 15 CF John Mansell (1-39-.283-0) - A solid hitter and fielder who has two brothers in the big leagues. 6 RF Jerry Dorgan (0-24-.301-0 with Worcester and Philadelphia; lifetime .259 hitter) - They got him for Doc Landis, a backup pitcher, and he actually turned out to be a steal for them. 46 RHP Pud Galvin (14-24, 2.13 in 1882; lifetime 176-205 record) - He had a good year in 1882, but on this team he's not going to get many wins. Two more years remaining on a very lucrative contract. 42 RHP Ed Halbriter (1-2, 0.44 in 1882 as a rookie) - As a fill-in pitcher, he did well in 1882, and now will get a chance to start with this hard-luck club.

PITTSBURGH ALLEGHENYS (32-46 in 1882)
This club struggled last season, but did add several good new players through free agency. Look for them to be considerably better, though probably not good enough to challenge for the title. 29 C Deacon White (2-47-.311-0) - He doesn't seem to be slowing down at all at age 35. One of the best hitters in the AA last season. 50 1B-2B John Morrill (2-24-.284-0 with Boston; lifetime .266 hitter) - After spending his entire career with Boston, Morrill is joining the Pittsburgh club, where they plan to use him at both first and second base. 31 1B Chappy Lane (1-38-.201-0) - His playing time is likely to drastically suffer with the addition of John Morrill, which will probably benefit the club. 21 2B-SS Wally Goldsmith (0-40-.238-0) - He's not a great hitter, but fields both middle infield positions quite well. 15 SS Jimmy Hallinan (0-10-.200-1 with Detroit; lifetime .275 hitter) - This 12-year veteran lost his starting job in Detroit, and has headed to Pittsburgh hoping to reclaim it. 17 3B Hick Carpenter (1-48-.308-0 with Worcester and Pittsburgh) - He was a very good pickup for the club last season, and should remain one of its best players. 33 LF Henry Oberbeck (rookie) - Doesn't seem like a budding star, but you never know. 40 CF Ren Wylie (0-8-.258-0) - Did okay as a pinch-hitter in 1882, so this year they'll try him as a starter. 35 RF Pete Donnelly (0-2-.182-0 with Detroit; lifetime .249 hitter) - Has been a backup for most of his career, although he did have a couple decent seasons with the Philadelphia Whites in the mid-1870s. 28 RHP Morrie Critchley (11-12, 2.50 as a rookie) - Looked good last season. Of course, at 33 years old, he probably doesn't have that much time left. 46 RHP Bob Barr (rookie) - They hope this 26-year-old is another Critchley.

ST. LOUIS BROWN STOCKINGS (51-29 in 1882)
This club was already pretty close to a pennant in 1883, and now their young players have another season of experience, and they added another very good young man - Buck Ewing, formerly of the Troy Trojans. This team is going to be a real threat to Louisville's supremacy in the AA. 30 C Buck Ewing (1-45-.275-0 with Troy; lifetime .268 hitter) - This 23-year-old looks like a very good young player, and was a big free agent signing for St. Louis. 31 1B Charlie Comiskey (2-47-.287-18) - One of the best players in the new league. He and Ewing should form a great young tandem for the club to build around. 29 2B George Fair (0-17-.185-0) - Did poorly in his first starting opportunity last year, and will be watched closely this season. 23 2B Fred Pfeffer (1-18-.236-0) - Will split time with Fair at second. A very good fielder at both the middle infield positions. 13 SS Bill Gleason (0-56-.289-1) - Like Comiskey, he had a great rookie year and is in the team's plans for years to come. 32 3B Dude Esterbrook (0-34-.283-6) - This 25-year-old came over in a trade with Buffalo and looks like another outstanding player. 12 LF Paul Hines (3-47-.288-10) - This experienced outfielder is getting moved over from center field for this season. 8 CF Len Stockwell (0-4-.283-0) - In a big gamble, they elected not to resign Al Thake in the outfield in order to give him a starting job. 26 RF Harry McCaffery (0-47-.265-0) - Another young, pretty good player. 24 OF-C-IF Eddie Fusselback (1-43-.257-0) - They will probably give him a lot of playing time as a super-sub. 47 RHP Jumbo McGinnis (18-10, 1.59 as a rookie) - After an outstanding rookie year, he's getting the #1 starter job this season. 46 RHP Bert Dorr (24-13, 2.22 as a rookie) - Both their young pitchers had a great year last season, and they should really help this club contend in 1883.

National League New York Gothams 4-1 Providence Grays 3-2 Buffalo Bisons 2-2 Chicago White Stockings 2-2 Cleveland Blues 2-2 Detroit Wolverines 2-2 Boston Beaneaters 2-3 Philadelphia Quakers 1-4 The New York Gothams got out to a great start, led by star first baseman Dan Brouthers. Although most observers believe they do not have the personnel to truly compete for the pennant this season, they are definitely putting the league on notice that they are a team to be reckoned with. May 20, 1883 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Chicago White Stockings 9-4 Providence Grays 8-5 New York Gothams 8-5 Cleveland Blues 8-5 Boston Beaneaters 6-6 Buffalo Bisons 5-7 Detroit Wolverines 4-9 Philadelphia Quakers 3-10 The big surprise so far has been the success of the Chicago White Stockings. After falling into the second division last season and losing stars "Orator Jim" O'Rourke and Levi Meyerle in the offseason, Chicago was expected to be terrible. However, thanks to some timely hitting and the amazing pitching of Larry Corcoran and Charlie Guth, they are leading all the expected contenders. This week Chicago will really be tested though, as they welcome Boston and Providence to the Windy City. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .444, Ross Barnes, Boston Beaneaters On-Base Percentage - .456, George Gore, Chicago White Stockings Slugging Percentage - .632, Bill Traffley, Chicago White Stockings OPS - 1.056, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Hits - 24, Ross Barnes, Boston Beaneaters Doubles - 5, 3 players tied Triples - 6, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Home Runs - 2, Frank Hankinson, Chicago White Stockings Extra Base Hits - 7, Dan Brouthers, New York and Joe Sommer, Providence Total Bases - 31, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Runs Batted In - 12, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams Runs Scored - 14, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Stolen Bases - 7, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 14, George Gore, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 16, Bill Phillips, Cleveland Blues RC/27 - 9.74, Sadie Houck, Boston Beaneaters ISO - .289, Bill Traffley, Chicago White Stockings VORP (Batting) - 8.4, Ross Barnes, Boston Beaneaters Earned Run Average - 0.79, Tim Keefe, New York Gothams Wins - 5, 3 players tied Losses - 7, Hardie Henderson, Philadelphia Quakers Saves - 2, George Bradley, New York and Charley Radbourn, Providence Innings Pitched - 69 1/3, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays Shutouts - 2, Will Sawyer, Cleveland Blues Walks - 21, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays Strikeouts - 47, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 6.88, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays HR/9IP - 0.00, many players tied BB/9IP - 0.39, Bill McGunnigle, Buffalo Bisons K/9IP - 7.41, Tim Keefe, New York Gothams K/BB Ratio - 11.00, Bill McGunnigle, Buffalo Bisons Opp. Avg. - .202, Charlie Sweeney, Detroit Wolverines WHIP - 0.98, Frank McIntyre, Detroit Wolverines VORP (Pitching) - 15.0, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings American Association Baltimore Orioles 9-4 Columbus Buckeyes 9-4 St. Louis Browns 9-4 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 7-4 Philadelphia Athletics 5-8 Cincinnati Red Stockings 4-9 Louisville Eclipse 4-9 New York Metropolitans 4-9 The real shock thus far in the AA has been the weak start of the Louisville club. After winning the 1882 pennant, they were expected to be a powerhouse again in 1883. However, they have a losing record against all three teams they have played in the young season - Columbus, Cincinnati and St. Louis. Strangely, it's been the hitters who aren't getting the job done so far for them. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .397, Jerry McCormick, Baltimore Orioles On-Base Percentage - .439, Jerry Dorgan, Philadelphia Athletics Slugging Percentage - .563, Ed Whiting, Baltimore Orioles OPS - .968, Ed Whiting, Baltimore Orioles Hits - 24, Ed Whiting, Baltimore Orioles Doubles - 8, Ed Whiting, Baltimore Orioles Triples - 3, Pete Browning, Louisville Eclipse Home Runs - 1, many players tied Extra Base Hits - 10, Ed Whiting, Baltimore Orioles Total Bases - 36, Ed Whiting, Baltimore Orioles Runs Batted In - 22, Jerry McCormick, Baltimore Orioles Runs Scored - 19, Ed Whiting, Baltimore Orioles Stolen Bases - 4, Bill Greenwood, Philadelphia Athletics Walks - 5, 4 players tied Strikeouts - 14, Bill Greenwood, Philadelphia Athletics RC/27 - 9.91, Jerry Dorgan, Philadelphia Athletics ISO - .188, Ed Whiting, Baltimore Orioles VORP (Batting) - 8.5, Ed Whiting, Baltimore Orioles Earned Run Average - 0.00, Bob Emslie, Baltimore Orioles Wins - 5, Terry Larkin, Baltimore Orioles Losses - 5, John Cassidy, New York Metropolitans Saves - 1, 7 players tied Innings Pitched - 70 2/3, Jim Egan, Columbus Buckeyes Shutouts - 1, Foghorn Bradley, Louisville and Guy Hecker, Louisville Walks - 16, Jim Egan, Columbus Buckeyes Strikeouts - 39, Jumbo McGinnis, St. Louis Browns H/9IP - 6.51, Bill Wise, Baltimore Orioles HR/9IP - 0.00, many players tied BB/9IP - 0.26, John Valentine, Columbus Buckeyes K/9IP - 9.33, Mickey Welch, New York Metropolitans K/BB Ratio - 15.00, Guy Hecker, Louisville Eclipse Opp. Avg. - .163, Bill Wise, Baltimore Orioles WHIP - 0.83, Bill Wise, Baltimore Orioles VORP (Pitching) - 11.9, The Only Nolan, Cincinnati Red Stockings

May 27, 1883 - Sunday Base Ball Report

Indeed, the big surprise is a negaive one - the Detroit Wolverines, expected to challenge for the pennant, are by far the worst team in the league. National League New York Gothams 14-6 Boston Beaneaters 14-7 Providence Grays 14-8 Chicago White Stockings 14-9 Cleveland Blues 10-11 Buffalo Bisons 7-12 Philadelphia Quakers 7-15 Detroit Wolverines 5-17 The two big surprises of the year so far in the National League are the New York Gothams and the Chicago White Stockings. Neither team was expected to be very good, yet they are both among the four teams deadlocked for NL supremacy. Both teams have excellent pitching they are relying upon thus far in the season - New York has Bobby Mitchell and Tim Keefe, and Chicago has Larry Corcoran and the suddenly reliable Charlie Guth. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .388, Sadie Houck, Boston Beaneaters On-Base Percentage - .456, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Slugging Percentage - .578, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters OPS - 1.034, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Hits - 38, Sadie Houck, Boston Beaneaters Doubles - 8, 3 players tied Triples - 7, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Home Runs - 3, Frank Hankinson, Chicago White Stockings Extra Base Hits - 12, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons Total Bases - 52, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Runs Batted In - 21, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Runs Scored - 23, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Stolen Bases - 10, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 22, George Gore, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 31, Bill Phillips, Cleveland Blues RC/27 - 10.30, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters ISO - .211, Bill Traffley, Chicago White Stockings VORP (Batting) - 12.6, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Earned Run Average - 1.36, Jim Tyng, Boston Beaneaters Wins - 9, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays Losses - 9, Tony Mullane, Detroit Wolverines Saves - 4, George Bradley, New York Gothams Innings Pitched - 119 2/3, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Shutouts - 3, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays Walks - 30, Will Sawyer, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 90, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 6.64, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Beaneaters HR/9IP - 0.00, 6 players tied BB/9IP - 0.38, Charlie Guth, Chicago White Stockings K/9IP - 9.25, Tim Keefe, New York Gothams K/BB Ratio - 11.50, Bobby Mitchell, New York Gothams Opp. Avg. - .191, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Beaneaters WHIP - 0.94, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings VORP (Pitching) - 30.0, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings American Association Columbus Buckeyes 17-6 Baltimore Orioles 16-6 St. Louis Browns 13-9 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 10-10 Louisville Eclipse 8-12 Philadelphia Athletics 9-14 Cincinnati Red Stockings 8-13 New York Metropolitans 6-17 Columbus is the best team in the AA for pitching and defense, and it is that pitching and defense that has them clinging to a slim lead over hot-hitting Baltimore. June 10, 1883 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Beaneaters 18-8 Chicago White Stockings 17-11 New York Gothams 15-10 Providence Grays 16-11 Cleveland Blues 13-13 Buffalo Bisons 11-13 Philadelphia Quakers 8-19 Detroit Wolverines 7-20 Things just keep going from bad to worse in Detroit. They have lost four key position players to injuries, including one that is likely season-ending for young first baseman John Reilly. With so many starters disabled or ineffective, it looks like Detroit is going to contend for the bottom of the National League rather than the top. Meanwhile, Boston's hitters remain the best in the league, and they have opened up a slight lead over Chicago, New York and Providence as a result. This week, the club will host Detroit and Chicago, both on an east coast swing. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .398, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters On-Base Percentage - .477, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Slugging Percentage - .611, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters OPS - 1.088, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Hits - 46, Sadie Houck, Boston Beaneaters Doubles - 13, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons Triples - 9, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Home Runs - 3, George Bechtel, Cleveland and Frank Hankinson, Chicago Extra Base Hits - 17, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons Total Bases - 69, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Runs Batted In - 25, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Runs Scored - 29, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Stolen Bases - 10, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 22, George Gore, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 36, Bill Phillips, Cleveland Blues RC/27 - 11.75, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters ISO - .212, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters VORP (Batting) - 17.8, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Earned Run Average - 1.36, Jim Tyng, Boston Beaneaters Wins - 10, Charlie Buffinton, Boston and Charlie Sweeney, Providence Losses - 10, Hardie Henderson, Philadelphia and Tony Mullane, Detroit Saves - 4, George Bradley, New York Gothams Innings Pitched - 135 2/3, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Shutouts - 3, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays Walks - 33, Will Sawyer, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 104, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings H/9IP - 6.33, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays HR/9IP - 0.00, 5 players tied BB/9IP - 0.28, Charlie Guth, Chicago White Stockings K/9IP - 8.79, Tim Keefe, New York Gothams K/BB Ratio - 9.00, Charlie Guth, Chicago White Stockings Opp. Avg. - .188, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays WHIP - 0.90, Denny Driscoll, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Pitching) - 35.6, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings American Association Columbus Buckeyes 19-7 Baltimore Orioles 18-8 St. Louis Browns 16-10 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 14-11 Cincinnati Red Stockings 10-15 Louisville Eclipse 10-15 Philadelphia Athletics 9-17 New York Metropolitans 7-20 Columbus continues to lead the AA by doing all the little things right. They don't have the hitting that Baltimore does, and they don't have the pitching St. Louis does, but their defense is better than either team and they are steady both at the plate and in the field. Unlike their competitors, they lack a big-name superstar, though it seems not to be holding them back. June 17, 1883 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Beaneaters 21-10 Providence Grays 20-12 Chicago White Stockings 20-13 New York Gothams 16-14 Buffalo Bisons 15-14 Cleveland Blues 16-15 Philadelphia Quakers 10-22 Detroit Wolverines 7-25 Boston has opened up a bit of a lead in the National League race, although there are five other teams with winning records that aren't far behind. Once again, Anson and Barnes are leading the way for Boston with averages of .409 and .336 respectively. They are also getting some great offense from Sadie Houck (.354) and John O'Rourke (.336). If this offensive attack continues at its current pace, it's hard to see how Boston can lose the pennant. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .409, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters On-Base Percentage - .490, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Slugging Percentage - .606, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters OPS - 1.096, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Hits - 54, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Doubles - 13, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons Triples - 9, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Home Runs - 3, 3 players tied Extra Base Hits - 17, Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons Total Bases - 80, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Runs Batted In - 27, Cap Anson, Boston and Ross Barnes, Boston Runs Scored - 32, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Stolen Bases - 10, John Reilly, Detroit Wolverines Walks - 22, George Gore, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 40, Bill Phillips, Cleveland Blues RC/27 - 11.89, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters ISO - .197, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters VORP (Batting) - 21.2, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Earned Run Average - 1.43, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Wins - 12, Charlie Buffinton, Boston and Charlie Sweeney, Providence Losses - 12, Tony Mullane, Detroit Wolverines Saves - 5, George Bradley, New York Gothams Innings Pitched - 163 2/3, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Shutouts - 4, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays Walks - 39, Will Sawyer, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 126, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Beaneaters H/9IP - 6.08, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays HR/9IP - 0.00, 4 players tied BB/9IP - 0.26, Charlie Guth, Chicago White Stockings K/9IP - 8.62, Tim Keefe, New York Gothams K/BB Ratio - 9.33, Charlie Guth, Chicago White Stockings Opp. Avg. - .181, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays WHIP - 0.88, Denny Driscoll, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Pitching) - 43.4, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings American Association Columbus Buckeyes 22-8 Baltimore Orioles 19-11 St. Louis Browns 19-11 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 15-13 Cincinnati Red Stockings 12-16 Louisville Eclipse 11-17 Philadelphia Athletics 11-19 New York Metropolitans 8-22 Columbus continues to look very, very good, to the surprise of nearly everyone. They also just finished a month-long stint on the road and have returned home for the next several weeks. This week, they will have four games against the Pittsburgh club, which is looking to slow down the hard-hitting, good-pitching Columbus team. June 24, 1883 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Beaneaters 25-11 Providence Grays 24-14 Chicago White Stockings 21-15 Buffalo Bisons 18-15 Cleveland Blues 19-16 New York Gothams 17-18 Philadelphia Quakers 12-26 Detroit Wolverines 8-29 Boston appears to have settled in atop the rankings of the National League and is on track to win their fourth pennant in five seasons. Conventional wisdom says that if Cap Anson leaves Boston this offseason (as expected - the team does not appear to have the financial means to sign him to an extension) Boston will stop their run atop the National League, but will they really? Here's a look at the starting eight players, their ages and their batting averages on the season: C Lew Brown - age 25, .256 1B Anson - age 31, .395 2B Ross Barnes - age 33, .333 SS Sadie Houck - age 27, .347 3B Paul Radford - age 21, .274 LF Mike Dorgan - age 29, .289 CF John O'Rourke - age 33, .340 RF Fred Lewis - age 24, .287 This offseason they are expected to lose both Anson and Mike Dorgan. Thus, they will need to find one infielder and one outfielder. One of those spots can be filled by Radford, who is a promising hitter but is playing out of place at third and is a disaster there. The best guess based upon the current roster is that they move Radford back to the outfield, move Brown to first base, give the catching job to Sam Trott, who looks promising, and find someone who can play third base. This would leave them with two aging stars in Barnes and O'Rourke, a couple promising younger players in Radford (if they can find a position for him), Lewis and Houck (whose .347 average appears to be a bit of a fluke), and only one really gaping hole on the diamond. At the very least, Boston should remain as a contender beyond the 1883 campaign. In individual accomplishments, longtime National Leaguer (and brother of John O'Rourke) "Orator Jim" O'Rourke reached the 1,000-hit mark with Baltimore of the AA last week. Although he is hitting only .256 for the Orioles at this point, he has had a long and outstanding career dating back to 1872, when he broke in with the Mansfield club of Middletown, CT. He is the sixth player to reach 1,000 hits, with Lip Pike of Cincinnati at 989 looking like he'll be next. Weird. I've never had a dynasty thread hit 10,000 views before. I'M KING OF THE WORLD
July 1, 1883 - Sunday Base Ball Report National League Boston Beaneaters 29-12 Providence Grays 26-17 Buffalo Bisons 22-16 Chicago White Stockings 23-17 Cleveland Blues 22-18 New York Gothams 20-20 Philadelphia Quakers 13-30 Detroit Wolverines 9-34 Boston's hitting still has them leading the pack in the National League. Although Providence, Buffalo, Chicago and Cleveland are all within striking distance, they are going to have to close the hitting gap with Boston to have a shot at denying them their fourth NL championship. As long as Anson (.411), Barnes (.333), O'Rourke (.324) and Houck (.332) continue hitting the way they have been, this seems unlikely. These four players are all in the top seven in the NL in hitting (joined by Dan Brouthers of New York (.367), Fred Mann of Philadelphia (.339) and Fred Dunlap of Cleveland (.331)). The current league leaders: Batting Average - .411, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters On-Base Percentage - .488, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Slugging Percentage - .594, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters OPS - 1.082, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Hits - 72, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Doubles - 15, Charlie Eden, Philadelphia and John O'Rourke, Boston Triples - 10, Cap Anson, Boston and Dan Brouthers, New York Home Runs - 3, 3 players tied Extra Base Hits - 23, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams Total Bases - 104, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Runs Batted In - 38, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Runs Scored - 41, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams Stolen Bases - 11, Dan Brouthers, New York and Tom Poorman, Buffalo Walks - 25, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Strikeouts - 47, Bill Phillips, Cleveland Blues RC/27 - 11.69, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters ISO - .209, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams VORP (Batting) - 28.4, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Earned Run Average - 1.64, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Wins - 16, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Beaneaters Losses - 17, Tony Mullane, Detroit Wolverines Saves - 7, George Bradley, New York Gothams Innings Pitched - 209, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Beaneaters Shutouts - 5, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays Walks - 52, Will Sawyer, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 165, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons H/9IP - 6.30, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays HR/9IP - 0.00, 4 players tied BB/9IP - 0.26, Charlie Guth, Chicago White Stockings K/9IP - 8.89, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons K/BB Ratio - 9.33, Charlie Guth, Chicago White Stockings Opp. Avg. - .185, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays WHIP - 0.89, Denny Driscoll, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Pitching) - 48.8, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings American Association Columbus Buckeyes 27-12 St. Louis Browns 27-12 Baltimore Orioles 23-16 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 19-18 Cincinnati Red Stockings 17-20 Louisville Eclipse 16-21 Philadelphia Athletics 14-25 New York Metropolitans 10-29 St. Louis got hot this past week and moved into a tie with Columbus for first place in the AA. However, observers are starting to wonder what happened to last year's pennant winners, the 16-21 Louisville Eclipse. This was the 1882 team: C Dan Sullivan (.248) 1B John Glenn (.284) 2B John Strick (.205) SS Bill Schenck (.233) 3B Jimmy Say (.250) LF Leech Maskrey (.278) CF Pete Browning (.403) RF Chicken Wolf (.314) P Foghorn Bradley (28-11, 1.97) P John Cassidy (14-8, 1.83) And here is this year's club: C Chicken Wolf (.265) 1B Jim Carleton (.203) 2B John Strick (.222) SS Phil Reccius (.229) 3B Jimmy Say (.271) LF Leech Maskrey (.212) CF Pete Browning (.325) RF John Reccius (.254) P Guy Hecker (9-7, 2.18) P Foghorn Bradley (5-11, 2.58) The two main observations: they miss John Glenn, and they need last year's outfield of Maskrey-Browning-Wolf to have a stellar year to remain competitive. Instead, all three are suffering from a sophomore slump, and it has the team mired in the second division. July 15, 1883 - Sunday Base Ball Report
National League Boston Beaneaters 37-14 Chicago White Stockings 30-20 Cleveland Blues 29-21 New York Gothams 29-23 Buffalo Bisons 27-22 Providence Grays 29-25 Philadelphia Quakers 15-39 Detroit Wolverines 10-42 Things continue to be relatively uneventful in the NL, as Boston continues to dominate. In a year when the second-highest team batting average in the National League is Cleveland at .255, Boston is hitting .285. The second-most runs scored so far is New York with 290. Boston has 398. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .380, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters On-Base Percentage - .458, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Slugging Percentage - .587, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams OPS - 1.011, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams Hits - 82, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Doubles - 19, John O'Rourke, Boston Beaneaters Triples - 12, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams Home Runs - 4, Fred Dunlap, Cleveland and Frank Hankinson, Chicago Extra Base Hits - 31, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams Total Bases - 125, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams Runs Batted In - 41, 3 players tied Runs Scored - 55, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Stolen Bases - 22, Tom Poorman, Buffalo Bisons Walks - 31, Cap Anson, Boston Beaneaters Strikeouts - 57, Bill Phillips, Cleveland Blues RC/27 - 10.61, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams ISO - .211, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams VORP (Batting) - 32.7, Dan Brouthers, New York Gothams Earned Run Average - 1.68, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings Wins - 21, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Beaneaters Losses - 21, Tony Mullane, Detroit Wolverines Saves - 7, George Bradley, New York Gothams Innings Pitched - 254, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Beaneaters Shutouts - 5, Charlie Sweeney, Providence Grays Walks - 57, Will Sawyer, Cleveland Blues Strikeouts - 199, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons HR/9IP - 0.00, 4 players tied BB/9IP - 0.55, Charlie Guth, Chicago White Stockings K/9IP - 8.71, Hugh "One Arm" Daily, Buffalo Bisons K/BB Ratio - 7.87, Bobby Mitchell, New York Gothams Opp. Avg. - .193, Charlie Buffinton, Boston Beaneaters WHIP - 0.90, Denny Driscoll, Buffalo Bisons VORP (Pitching) - 59.2, Larry Corcoran, Chicago White Stockings American Association St. Louis Browns 34-15 Columbus Buckeyes 32-17 Baltimore Orioles 30-19 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 25-23 Cincinnati Red Stockings 23-25 Louisville Eclipse 22-25 Philadelphia Athletics 16-33 New York Metropolitans 12-37 Lots of eventful occurrences in the AA this week. First of all, Bob Barr of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys became the third pitcher in big league history to record a no-hit game, joining Ed Stratton and Bill McGunnigle. Barr no-hit the Philadelphia Athletics on Friday. The very next day, Pittsburgh's Morrie Critchley took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against Philadelphia before Pud Galvin broke it up. Critchley finished with a one-hitter, so Philadelphia managed just one hit in 18 innings over two games against Pittsburgh pitching. Baltimore and Louisville exchanged middle infielders this week, as Baltimore sent second baseman John Shetzline (.276) to Louisville and got back shortstop Bill Schenck (.250) in return. Finally, St. Louis and Columbus played a four-game series for first place in the AA. Although Columbus took the first game, St. Louis came back to win three in a row and took a two-game lead in the Association. Nice job on 10,000 views man! You're doing a nice job on this, it's interesting to see how the same players develop in different dynasties.

This week, they have five games in Buffalo against the new second-place club. Although this is a good opportunity for the Bisons, no one seems even close to being able to compete with Boston at the moment. The current NL leaders:

July 22, 1883 - Sunday Base Ball Report
American Association St. Louis Browns 37-17 Baltimore Orioles 34-19 Columbus Buckeyes 33-21 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 28-24 Cincinnati Red Stockings 26-27 Louisville Eclipse 25-27 Philadelphia Athletics 16-37 New York Metropolitans 13-40 The two-team race in the AA has turned into a three-team race, as the Baltimore Orioles are currently on an eleven-game winning streak that has catapulted them into the thick of the pennant battle. This team is no fluke; they have young stars Ed Whiting (.315) and Jerry McCormick (.302) leading the way, and are getting help from NL mainstays Jim O'Rourke (.272) and Count Sensenderfer (.250) as well as many others. Indeed, not a single regular player is batting under .249. Furthermore, their two pitchers, Bill Wise (13-7) and Terry Larkin (12-5), are having good years as well. This could be very competitive down the stretch. The current AA leaders:

Still, Boston continues to lead the NL by six games as we get close to the 2/3 mark of the season. This week Boston will be traveling to Cleveland for four games, while second-place Chicago hosts New York. In other news, the Philadelphia Quakers are in the midst of a 13-game losing streak, which has them on the brink of taking over last place from the Detroit Wolverines. The league leaders:
