July 29, 1883 - Sunday American Association Base Ball Report
St. Louis Browns 40-18 Baltimore Orioles 37-20 Columbus Buckeyes 35-23 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 29-28 Cincinnati Red Stockings 28-29 Louisville Eclipse 26-30 Philadelphia Athletics 19-38 New York Metropolitans 14-42 A few things to note this week. Baltimore's winning streak finally ended at 12, though they remain the new challenger to St. Louis. Also, Cincinnati's Lip Pike had a three-hit game on Saturday, making him the seventh player ever to reach the 1,000-hit plateau. For the 38-year-old Pike, currently playing a part-time role for Cincinnati, it is probably about the end of the line, but it shows his longevity and consistency. In transaction news, the Philadelphia Athletics swapped players with Providence of the NL and brought in infielder Jack Rowe to play shortstop. The 26-year-old Rowe was hitting only .215 with Providence, but in his first two games with Philadelphia he went 5 for 10 with a double and a triple. Providence got part-time pitcher Charlie Reynolds in the deal, and cleared a starting spot for Emil Gross, who had been struggling in his first year as a bench player. This week, St. Louis will play at Louisville and Cincinnati, while Baltimore goes to New York and Philadelphia. League leaders:

August 5, 1883 - Sunday National League Base Ball Report
Boston Beaneaters 43-21 Chicago White Stockings 37-25 Cleveland Blues 37-26 Buffalo Bisons 36-26 New York Gothams 37-28 Providence Grays 34-32 Detroit Wolverines 17-47 Philadelphia Quakers 15-51 Boston had a tough week this week, as they dropped three of four against the Cleveland Blues, and lost the services of star second baseman Ross Barnes for the next three weeks (concussion). Nevertheless, they remain five games ahead of second-place Chicago as we approach the two-thirds mark of the 1883 campaign. The big news in individual achievements has been the dominance of New York's Dan Brouthers. Fresh off his first MVH Award in 1882, Brouthers is showing he deserves to be discussed in the same breath with Boston's stars Anson and Barnes. This week Boston will take on Providence, while second-place Chicago travels to Detroit and Buffalo. Current league leaders:

August 5, 1883 - Sunday American Association Base Ball Report
St. Louis Browns 44-19 Baltimore Orioles 41-21 Columbus Buckeyes 37-26 Pittsburgh Alleghenys 32-30 Cincinnati Red Stockings 31-31 Louisville Eclipse 27-34 Philadelphia Athletics 22-40 New York Metropolitans 14-47 The big news last week in the AA were the injuries to Louisville's key players. First, starting third baseman Jimmy Say suffered a thigh injury that will keep him out of action for the next month. Then the far more serious injury - Pete Browning suffered a fractured cheekbone that will end his season and leave any possible return date uncertain. The hope is that he will be ready to go at the start of the 1884 season, but right now things don't look good. On the field, St. Louis had a good week, and now sits 2 1/2 games in front of Baltimore. They travel to Cincinnati and Columbus this week, while Baltimore journeys to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The league leaders:
