For this version of history I'll just use this 1876 disbanding as a good excuse for the league's early financial troubles. June 3, 1877 - Sunday Base Ball Report Chicago White Stockings 10-2 Cincinnati Reds 6-5 Hartford Dark Blues 5-3 Louisville Grays 5-6 Boston Red Caps 4-5 St. Louis Brown Stockings 1-10 Chicago continues to lead by a comfortable margin. With their pennant hopes growing dimmer by the day, the other five teams are also growing increasingly financially desperate. It remains to be seen whether any of them will even be able to survive the 1877 campaign. Meanwhile, here are the top ten position players in career value who have never won a pennant going into this season, along with their current teams: 10. Count Gedney (Hartford) - All of his good seasons have come with Hartford, and Hartford has never won a pennant. 9. John Clapp (Boston) - Not a bad hitter, but he's probably best as a backup catcher/utility outfielder. Either way, he's never added enough to push his teams over the top. 8. Dickie Flowers (Hartford) - Good player, but his teams are simply never any good. 7. Tom York (Cincinnati) - He's a pretty inconsistent player who had the bad luck to join Boston just as the team was falling from the top. 6. John Glenn (Hartford) - A solid outfielder who has mostly toiled for mediocre teams. 5. Count Sensenderfer (Boston) - He was traded away from the 1873 Athletic club, which won the National Association pennant. 4. Jimmy Wood (St. Louis) - He's always been in the shadow of Ross Barnes and Lip Pike, but he's also a good second baseman - he just hasn't been with any great teams. 3. Jim Foran (Boston) - A great hitter who always seems to be the bright spot on some terrible teams. 2. Fred Waterman (Hartford) - This superstar third baseman continues to be one of the league's best hitters. 1. Cap Anson (Hartford) - Probably the best overall player so far, yet his Brooklyn NA teams always came up just short. Interestingly, he and Waterman have been teammates for five consecutive years now. Based upon the teams of these players, this list looks to remain intact for at least another year. Chicago White Stockings 16-4 Hartford Dark Blues 10-6 Louisville Grays 9-9 Boston Red Caps 8-8 Cincinnati Reds 6-11 St. Louis Brown Stockings 4-15 All the big news this week was on the injury front, and it was uniformly bad for the league's top teams. First and foremost, Chicago's superstar and defending MVH Levi Meyerle has an arm injury and is not expected back until the end of next month. Since outfielder Thake was already injured, this means that two of Chicago's top hitters will be out for the next month. However, Hartford may not in position to take advantage, as they just lost outfielder Orator Shaffer to a shoulder injury that will keep him out possibly until the end of the season. Other notable players who have been injured recently include Cincinnati's Bob Addy and Bobby Mitchell, Louisville's Art Allison, and George Wright of the St. Louis club. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .425, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues On-Base Percentage - .442, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues Slugging Percentage - .616, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues OPS - 1.058, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues Hits - 33, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Doubles - 8, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Triples - 4, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues Home Runs - 1, Levi Meyerle, Chicago and John Morrill, Boston Extra Base Hits - 10, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues Total Bases - 45, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues Runs Batted In - 20, Tom Carey, Chicago White Stockings Runs Scored - 23, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Stolen Bases - 5, 3 players tied Walks - 6, Fred Waterman, Hartford Dark Blues Strikeouts - 13, Steve Brady, Louisville Grays RC/27 - 11.59, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues ISO - .192, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues VORP (Batting) - 14.3, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues Earned Run Average - 1.67, Will White, Boston Red Caps Wins - 14, J. It's short for "Lipman." He was actually the first Jewish professional baseball player. Here is a good biography of him. Barring injury, I'm sure he'll be around for a while.

Chicago White Stockings 21-9 Hartford Dark Blues 18-14 Boston Red Caps 17-14 Louisville Grays 16-14 St. Louis Brown Stockings 9-21 Cincinnati Reds 8-17 Chicago is playing poorly enough to give the National League some semblance of a pennant race, but Levi Meyerle and Al Thake are both due to come back from injury this week, so the White Stockings' fortunes should be improving. Chicago White Stockings 22-9 Hartford Dark Blues 19-16 Louisville Grays 18-14 Boston Red Caps 17-18 St. Louis Brown Stockings 11-21 Cincinnati Reds 9-18 As the league heads into the dog days of August, it will take a real slump by Chicago to give the rest of the clubs any hope. Meanwhile, Cincinnati has been rumored to be on the verge of financial collapse for about a month now, and all of the other teams are reportedly losing money as well. August 5, 1877 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Chicago White Stockings 23-11 Louisville Grays 21-14 Hartford Dark Blues 19-16 Boston Red Caps 17-18 St. Louis Brown Stockings 12-23 Cincinnati Reds 10-20 And just like that, the race is on. Another bad week from Chicago, a solid winning streak by Louisville, and finally a dramatic win on August 4, where Louisville defeated Chicago 3-2 by virtue of possibly the greatest pitching performance base ball has ever seen. Harry Arundel of Louisville got 12 Chicago batters out on strikes, by far the highest total in base ball history. Although Chicago cranks complained that Arundel was flicking his wrist to deliver the ball in unpermitted fashion, the game stands and the spectators in Louisville thrilled to the sight of this new style of pitching. Could it be that this is the boost the National League needs to survive? August 12, 1877 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Chicago White Stockings 26-12 Louisville Grays 22-17 Hartford Dark Blues 21-18 Boston Red Caps 19-20 St. Louis Brown Stockings 16-23 Cincinnati Reds 10-24 Evidently Chicago didn't like anyone getting close, as they had a big week, splitting two games with Louisville and taking two from the lowly Reds. Conversely, Louisville lost its other two games of the week, against the suddenly resurgent Brown Stockings. Of course there is still time enough for Louisville and Hartford to catch Chicago, but it's going to take a slump for them to do so. In other news, Cal McVey, whose contract with Boston was due to expire at the end of the season, signed a huge five-year extension that will keep him in New England through the 1882 season. It appears Boston is finally starting to plan for a future that does not simply involve them losing all of their expensive players. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .400, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings On-Base Percentage - .398, Cap Anson, Hartford Dark Blues Slugging Percentage - .524, Ross Barnes, Louisville Grays OPS - .903, Ross Barnes, Louisville Grays Hits - 70, Cal McVey, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 13, Ross Barnes, Louisville Grays Triples - 5, 4 players tied Home Runs - 1, 12 players tied Extra Base Hits - 18, Ross Barnes, Louisville Grays Total Bases - 85, Cal McVey, Boston Red Caps Runs Batted In - 31, Steve Bellan, Louisville and Cal McVey, Boston Runs Scored - 35, Paul Hines, Chicago and Lip Pike, Hartford Stolen Bases - 8, Fred Waterman, Hartford Dark Blues Walks - 9, Jim O'Rourke, Chicago and Deacon White, Hartford Strikeouts - 29, Steve Brady, Louisville Grays RC/27 - 7.97, Ross Barnes, Louisville Grays ISO - .168, Ross Barnes, Louisville Grays VORP (Batting) - 21.0, Cap Anson, Hartford Dark Blues Earned Run Average - 2.12, NFN O'Rourke, St. Louis Brown Stockings Wins - 23, J. August 19, 1877 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Chicago White Stockings 26-15 Louisville Grays 23-18 Hartford Dark Blues 23-18 Boston Red Caps 20-20 St. Louis Brown Stockings 18-24 Cincinnati Reds 11-26 At the two-thirds mark of the 1877 season, Chicago is continuing to struggle. They are 3-6 for the month of August, and if either Hartford or Louisville can put together a sustained run down the stretch they could take the pennant. However, since both of those teams also seem seriously flawed, the smart money says that Chicago takes their second consecutive pennant. The other mild surprise is that on an individual level, there hasn't really been any kind of a surprise - no one has emerged as the Count Gedney of 1877. It's simply been the usual cast of characters at the top of most of the standings. Observers speculate this may be part of the reason the National League seems at this point to be so precariously balanced. Whatever the reason, no one is watching many of these games, and the league is facing an existential crisis. The current league leaders: Batting Average - .405, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings On-Base Percentage - .400, Cap Anson, Hartford Dark Blues Slugging Percentage - .519, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings OPS - .915, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings Hits - 70, Cal McVey, Boston Red Caps Doubles - 14, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues Triples - 5, 4 players tied Home Runs - 1, 13 players tied Extra Base Hits - 19, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues Total Bases - 89, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues Runs Batted In - 32, Steve Bellan, Louisville and Lip Pike, Hartford Runs Scored - 38, Lip Pike, Hartford Dark Blues Stolen Bases - 8, Fred Waterman, Hartford Dark Blues Walks - 10, Jim O'Rourke, Chicago White Stockings Strikeouts - 32, Steve Brady, Louisville Grays RC/27 - 8.26, Levi Meyerle, Chicago White Stockings ISO - .159, Ross Barnes, Louisville Grays VORP (Batting) - 21.9, Cap Anson, Hartford Dark Blues Earned Run Average - 2.12, NFN O'Rourke, St. Louis Brown Stockings Wins - 23, J. Chicago White Stockings 27-16 Louisville Grays 25-19 Hartford Dark Blues 24-19 Boston Red Caps 21-23 St. Louis Brown Stockings 19-25 Cincinnati Reds 13-27 If nothing else, the rest of the National League can take comfort in the fact that Chicago is not any kind of invincible juggernaut. With approximately 16 games left in the season, there is still an ample opportunity for either Louisville or Hartford to heat up and make a run for the pennant. However, the White Stockings continue to cling to their ever-narrowing lead. Louisville Grays 28-19 Chicago White Stockings 27-16 Hartford Dark Blues 24-22 Boston Red Caps 22-26 St. Louis Brown Stockings 19-25 Cincinnati Reds 16-28 And just like that, heading into the stretch we've got a new leader. Recently, all sorts of unsavory rumors have begun to circulate around the Chicago club. There are several notorious gamblers who are often around the base ball grounds, and some are suggesting a deal has been struck to ensure Louisville wins the pennant. Although President William Hulbert is silent about this, sources close to the club say that there will be big changes in Chicago if the team fails to win the championship. "Now that we actually have an exciting race," said one National League mogul, "we need to make sure the games are being played cleanly and fairly." Louisville Grays 30-20 Chicago White Stockings 28-17 Hartford Dark Blues 26-22 Boston Red Caps 25-27 St. Louis Brown Stockings 19-28 Cincinnati Reds 17-31 Now it's Chicago needing to play catch-up, and they will do it mostly against Boston and Hartford for the remainder of the month. Louisville Grays 31-21 Chicago White Stockings 30-18 Hartford Dark Blues 29-23 Boston Red Caps 25-30 St. Louis Brown Stockings 21-30 Cincinnati Reds 18-32 Chicago has its big chance to regain the lead this week, as they play four games in Boston and Hartford while Louisville has no games scheduled.
