Pirates Rally Again; NLCS Tied at Two
Pittsburgh, Penn.--Perhaps it was getting back to Three Rivers Stadium. Or maybe it was getting All-Star Roberto Clemente back in the lineup. Whatever the reason, the Pittsburgh Pirates are back.
Matty Alou's double scored Fred Patek from first base and the Pirates slipped past the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 Wednesday in 11 innings. The victory tied the National League Championship Series at two games each. The fifth and deciding game will take place Friday in Los Angeles. For the second consecutive day, the Dodgers appeared on their way to the World Series. Closer Jim Brewer was unavailable due to appearing in the first three games. Thus, Los Angeles starter Don Sutton took the mound in the ninth inning with his team clinging to a 3-2 lead. However, singles by Dave Cash and Manny Sanguillen sent Sutton to the showers and brought in left-handed reliever Fred Norman. Things looked good for the Dodgers when Pirate pitcher John Lamb bunted into a double play with Cash taking third. Down to their final out, the Pirates forced extra innings when leadoff man Fred Patek singled past a diving Bill Russell at short stop. After Alou singled Patek to third, Los Angeles replaced Norman with Ray Lamb. The Los Angeles reliever retired Clemente on a deep fly to right. After the Dodgers failed to score in the 10th, Pittsburgh faced Dodger lefty Claude Osteen. Willie Stargell started the inning with a single up the middle. Al Oliver then bunted Stargell into scoring position. After an intentional walk to Richie Hebner, right-hander Pete Mikkelsen came out of the Dodger bullpen. Mikkelsen surrendered a sharp single by Cash to load the bases. Yet, the Dodger reliever escaped the situation by striking out Sanguillen and retiring pinch-hitter Gene Clines on a fly ball. Right-hander Bruce Dalcanton sent the Dodgers down in the 11th. That set the stage for Alou's game-winner. Mikkelsen walked the pesky Patek on a close 3-2 pitch. Alou (pictured below) followed with a drive that carmoed off the left-center field wall on the first pitch he saw. The pennant-deciding game will match Cy Young candidates Dock Ellis for Pittsburgh and Bill Singer for Los Angeles. Orioles Edge A's to Even Series
Baltimore--After failing to win his first outing of the American League Championsip Series, Mike Cuellar was determined to grab victory this time around. That's exactly what happened on Wednesday.
Cuellar and fellow left-hander Pete Richert teamed up to twirl a six-hitter as the Baltimore Orioles edged the Oakland A's 2-1 at Memorial Stadium. The Baltimore win forces a deciding fifth game Friday in Oakland. The A's scored their lone run in the first inning. Bert Campaneris and Tito Francona led off the game with consecutive singles. Campeneris then scored the Oakland run as Sal Bando grounded into a double play. From that point on, Cuellar allowed just three more hits in his seven innings of work. He walked none and struck out five before leaving for a pinch-hitter in the seventh. Oakland starter Al Downing also pitched extremely well. The left-hander allowed just two runs before leaving the game in the eighth. In fact, the game saw just one extra-base hit, a double by Baltimore's Merv Rettenmund in the eighth inning. The Orioles tied the game in their at-bat. With two outs, Frank Robinson drew a walk and moved to second on a balk. A Boog Powell single moved Robinson to third. After a walk to Rettunmund loaded the bases, Dave May singled home Robinson. Downing got out of the jam by getting Brooks Robinson to ground into a force out. Baltimore scored what proved to be the game-deciding run in the second inning. Catcher Andy Etchebarren led off with a single. Cuellar bunted him to second. A single by Don Buford moved Etchebarren to third before Davey Johnson singled him home. Downing got out of the inning by retiring Frank Robinson and Powell. From there, the game became a pitching duel. Each team got just one player into scoring position the remainder of the game. Friday's game five will likely match Chuck Dobson for Oakland against either right-hander Jim Hardin or lefty Grant Jackson for Baltimore. Something's Brewin': New Ownership Takes Over Milwaukee
When the 1971 season begins the Miwaukee Brewers will have new leadership.
Tim L., GM/manager of the National League Cincinnati Reds, has taken over Milwaukee in the American League. The previous management team of Andrew R. and Ryan Z. will continue to run the Montreal Expos. Tim originally operated the Detroit Tigers, but gave that franchise up in order to allow Matt K. to join the Joy in Mudville League. That move came prior to the 1970 season. Tim, a noted teetotaler, will inherit a Brewer ballclub that posted a dismal 61-101 record and finished 44 games behind the Oakland A's in the AL West. Yet, the new management head is proceeding with sheer optimism. "With young talent like Danny Walton and Skip Lockwood on the roster, I am sure that I can turn this around. Those are two cornerstones that I can build around," Tim said. "In our first order of business, is anyone interested in Danny Walton or Skip Lockwood?" For the record, Walton hit .263 with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs. Lockwood was 14-22 with a 4.47 ERA. Tim will have fellow Eastern Illinois University alum Marty Pattin (11-18, 4.74) on his roster Last edited by Joy in Mudville : 01-24-2008 at 02:35 PM. |

Pirates Pull Off Another Comeback, Advance to JIM World Series
Los Angeles--The Pittsburgh Pirates trumped even themselves this time around.
Trailing by three runs in the deciding fifth game of the National League Championship Series, the Pirates rallied past the Los Angeles Dodgers to win 5-4 Friday in extra innings. Pittsburgh advances to the Joy in Mudville World Series. For the third straight game it looked as though it would be the Dodgers moving onto the Fall Classic. Leading 4-1 in the top of the ninth, Los Angeles right-hander Ray Lamb headed out for his second inning of relief. But, the Pirates had other ideas. Catcher Manny Sanguillen singled to open the inning. Surprisingly, starting pitcher Dock Ellis was allowed to bat. The Pirate hurler reached on a bunt single. A walk to leadoff man Fred Patek loaded the bases. With starters Claude Osteen and Don Sutton warming in the bullpen, Lamb remained in the game. He got the first out of the inning when Matty Alou popped to third. That brought up Roberto Clemente. It also provided the break of the game. The Pirate All-Star hit a high pop up behind home plate. Dodger catcher Tom Haller, however, dropped the ball on what should have been the second out of the inning. The error proved costly as Clemente singled home a run two pitches later. A base on balls to cleanup hitter Willie Stargell made it a 4-3 game. After a mound trip, Los Angeles stayed with Lamb. The move appeared to be working as Al Oliver flew out to short left field, leaving the bases loaded. However, the Pirates tied the game as Richie Hebner walked on a 3-2 pitch. Lamb ended the inning when Dave Cash grounded out. Each team squandered scoring chances over the next inning and a half. The Pirates finally broke through in the top of the 11th against Dodger closer Jim Brewer, who had endured a rough NCLS. With one out, Oliver and Hebner both singled. With Oliver at third, Cash lofted a sacrifice fly to deep center. Pittsburgh right-hander Dave Giusti then sent the Dodgers down in order in their final at-bat. Clemente, who missed the first two games of the NLCS with a wrist injury, was named Series Most Valuable Player. In the three games he played Clemente batted .412 and provided the spark the Pirates seemed to have been missing in games one and two. Oriole Bats Provide World Series Berth
Oakland, Calif.--The Baltimore Orioles’ bats finally took playoff flight.
After scoring just 10 runs in the first four games of American League Championship Series, the Orioles battered A’s starter Chuck Dobson en route to a 7-3 victory Friday. The win sends Baltimore to the Joy in Mudville World Series. After scoring a single run in the first inning, the Orioles exploded for three more in third inning. Frank Robinson delivered the big blow with a two-run double. The Oriole right fielder had just one hit in 13 ALCS at-bats entering the game. Baltimore added a run in the fifth and got back-to-back home runs from catcher Elrod Hendricks and third baseman Brooks Robinson in the sixth. Hendricks, making his second start in the playoffs, finished the day with four hits in four at-bats. Dobson, 18-8 during the regular season, allowed seven runs on 10 hits. He walked two and struck out three. Meanwhile, Baltimore starter Jim Hardin held Oakland in check. The right-hander scattered eight hits over eight innings. The A’s did manage to push across three runs late in the game. Don Mincher hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning. Closer Dick Hall pitched a perfect ninth inning to lock up the American League pennant. Oakland played its second straight game without left fielder Joe Rudi who was injured in the final inning of game three. Oriole pitcher Mike Cuellar earned ALCS Most Valuable Player honors. Trader Tim and Dealer Dan Swing Yet Another Trade
Call one Trader Tim and the other Dealer Dan.
That's right, they're at it again. One day after taking control of the American League's Milwaukee Brewers, Tim L. sent right-handed pitcher Marty Pattin to the San Diego Padres for outfielder Jerry Morales. This marks the second time that these two trade partners have hooked up. Earlier this season, Dan S. sent pitcher Pat Dobson from San Diego in exchange for pitcher Pedro Borbon from Cincinnati. Dan leads all Joy in Mudville GMs with six trades between his two franchises. Pattin, 27, went 11-18 with a 4.74 ERA in 44 starts. Morales, 21, had just 15 at-bats for San Diego. He posted a .333 batting average with no home runs or RBIs. Like both Tim L. and Dan S., Pattin is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University. Moreover, Pattin grew up in Charleston, home to the Panthers. In fact, Pattin has a stake in a bar that bears his name there. "Ownership was afraid that his interest in owning a bar in the future would somehow distract him from his career as a pitcher," noted Tim L. Dan S., however, wasn't bothered at all. "I've spent many special occasions there," Dan reported. "The first Cubs' night game . . . the day after the first Cubs' night game . . . the second day after the Cubs' first night game . . . " Last edited by Joy in Mudville : 01-26-2008 at 11:19 AM. |

Veale Starves Orioles in World Series Opener
Baltimore--The Pittsburgh Pirates were far from chopped veal in Sunday's opening game of the Joy in Mudville World Series.
Making his first start of the post-season, Pirate left-hander Bob Veale carved up the Baltimore Orioles as Pittsburgh shut out the American League champions 4-0. Veale held the Orioles to five hits--only one for extra bases--in his seven innings. He walked five and struck out four. In the meantime, the Pirate offense (aka the Pittsburgh Lumber Company) pounded Baltimore starter Dave McNally for 11 hits and three runs in his 5.1 innings of labor. McNally, 24-10 during the regular season, is 1-2 with a 3.80 ERA in post-season play. Pittsburgh scored all it needed with a three-run fifth inning. Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell drove home runs with singles while Bob Robertson added a sacrifice fly. After getting just one pinch-hit appearance in the first two games of the National League Championship Series, Clemente has been hotter than a jalapeno firecracker. The Pirate All-Star had four hits in five at-bats in Monday's Series opener. Since Clemente's return to the starting lineup, Pittsburgh has not lost in post-season play. The Pirates added an insurance run in the ninth to virtually put the game away. Right-hander John Lamb pitched the final two innings, earning a save in the process. Game two is Monday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The Orioles will send ALCS MVP Mike Cuellar to the mound. Pittsburgh will counter with Dock Ellis.
