Joy in Mudville World Series Notebook
As the teams wing their way back to Oakland for game six (and possibly game seven), it's time for another installment of the Joy in Mudville World Series Notebook.
Pinch-Hitting Woes The futility in pinch-hitting continues for both teams. Oakland bench players are 0-for-8. Meanwhile, Cincinnati is 0-for-3. Red-Hot Rennie After beginning the World Series with just one hit in eight at-bats, A's rookie Rennie Stennett has turned it on. Since being switched from third base back to his natural position of second base, Stennett has gone 6-for-12 and driven home three runs in three games. That raises his Series average to .350. Nasty Nolan Right-hander Gary Nolan has been by far Cincinnati's most effective pitcher in the Series. In two games, Nolan has allowed just eight hits in 17 innings. He's walked six and struck out seven. Nolan's ERA stands at a stingy 1.58 in Series play. Should the Reds force a game seven, don't be surprised if Nolan gets the ball on short rest. Hunter Green and Blue While the A's official colors may include kelly green, Oakland management may consider changing it to hunter green and a shade of blue. In two Series starts, Jim "Catfish" Hunter has allowed just two earned runs in 15 innings (1.20 ERA). The right-hander has won both outings. Morever, Hunter has struck out 10 batters while issuing only one base on balls. Meanwhile, the A's left-handed ace Vida Blue will start game six. In his first Series start, Blue walked one and struck out eight en route to a victory. The Reds face the daunting task of beating Blue and Hunter in succession. Splintering Bench National League home run leader Johnny Bench has struggled mightily the past two games. Through the first three games, the Cincinnati catcher was 6-for-12 (.500). However, in games four and five, Bench is hitless in nine at-bats. In addition, he has left nine runners on base. If Cincinnati is to pull off a Series comeback, it needs Bench to get back on track. Announcements to JIM GMs After the World Series is over, all season awards will be posted. The Hot Stove will then heat up as 1971 comes to a close and the calendar turns to '72. The trading window opens immediately following the final out of the Fall Classic. Spring training will be run later this week. Opening Day 1972 will begin next weekend. Reds' Rout Forces Game Seven Showdown
Oakland, Calif.--There will be a game seven, Joy in Mudville fans.
The Cincinnati Reds forced the JIM World Series to a deciding game with a 16-3 shellacking of the Oakland A's Monday. The Reds battered four A's pitchers for 16 runs and 16 hits. Cincinnati scored four runs in its opening at-bat. Bobby Tolan and Lee May each hit two-run homers off Oakland ace Vida Blue in that inning. The A's left-hander had won his last 10 decisions, including wins in both the American League Championship Series and the World Series. Cincinnati scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings before completing its scoring with a five-run eighth and a three-run ninth. Tony Perez led the Reds' charge with four hits, two home runs and a JIM World Series record seven RBIs. Perez has hit six post-season homers. Cincinnati catcher Johnny Bench may have broken out of his Series slump. Bench collected two hits, and fifth-inning double and an eighth-inning solo home run. The only Cincinnati starters who didn't get hits were Frank Howard and Glenn Beckert. Pitcher Joe Coleman singled, walked and scored twice in the game. However, it was on the mound that Coleman made his true contribution. The former Washington Senator scattered seven hits en route to the victory. Coleman walked five and struck out seven. Deciding game seven is Tuesday night. Oakland will start right-hander Jim "Catfish" Hunter who has won two Series games thus far. Cincinnati will send either Pat Dobson or Gary Nolan to the mound. Dobson Leads Cincinnati to JIM World Series Championship
Oakland, Calif.--Pat Dobson made Cincinnati GM/Manager Tim L. look like a genius. Tabbed by the Reds' brain trust to start the deciding seventh game of the Joy in Mudville World Series, Dobson delivered in the clutch. The Cincinnati pitcher led the Reds to a rousing 7-1 victory. Thus, Cincinnati claims the 1971 JIM World Series title. The 29-year-old Dobson scattered 10 hits, walked only one and struck out six as Cincinnati defeated Oakland in the final Series game. Dobson also delivered the key blow, a three-run homer off A's starter Jim "Catfish" Hunter in the second inning. Hunter, who had dominated the Reds in his two previous Series starts, lasted just two innings. Ironically, Dobson had lost both his previous two Series starts to the A's. Cincinnati added a single run in the third inning. Catcher Johnny Bench put the game out of reach with a two-run homer in the sixth. Bobby Tolan added a solo shot in the ninth. The game ended when Cincinnati left fielder Pete Rose threw out Felipe Alou at the plate on a single. Thus, the Reds completed an improbable Series comeback. Oakland led the Series three games to one and had its two aces, left-hander Vida Blue and right-hander Hunter, for the final two games at home. |
