Cubs-Astros Complete First Trade of Hot Stove Season

The first trade of the 1971-72 Hot Stove League has been made.

The Chicago Cubs shipped short stop Roger Metzger to the Houston Astros for first baseman Bob Robertson.

Metzger, 24, hit .242 with no home runs and 22 RBIs in 133 games for Chicago last season. He is a career .255 hitter.

Robertson, 25, hit .235 with 14 homers and 44 RBIs last year. He came to the Astros in a July trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Robertson played in seven post-season games with the Pirates in 1970.

Metzger will likely compete with Denis Menke for the starting short stop job in Houston.

Robertson will battle veterans Joe Pepitone and Jim Hickman for time at first with Chicago.

Baseball Timeline 1972

Actual baseball-related events from 1972:

Baseball experiences its first general strike. The major issue is an increase in the players' pension fund.

In May, eight games into the season, Vida Blue gives up bathroom fixtures and picks up a baseball. He accepts Charles O. Finley's offer, reportedly $63,000.

The Summer Game by Roger Angell is published.

The Los Angeles Dodgers retire three uniform numbers: 32, Sandy Koufax; 39, Roy Campanella; 42, Jackie Robinson.

The U.S Supreme Court votes 5-3 against Curt Flood in his suit against baseball's anti-trust exemption.

Dick Allen is the first player since 1950 with two inside-the-park home runs in one game.

Roberto Clemente's double is his 3,000th--and last--hit of his 18-year career.

Steve Carlton (27-10) is the only pitcher to win the Cy Young Award with a last-place team. He accounted for nearly 46% of Philadelphia's wins.

Ted Williams once was trying to improve the hitting of Dick Billings (.227 lifetime hitter). Williams asked the catcher-infielder if he'd read Williams' book on hitting. Billings responded: "No. But I could read a book on medicine and it wouldn't help make me a surgeon either."

Rod Carew of the Twins becomes the first AL player to lead the league in batting without hitting a home run.

Roberto Clemente, 38, is killed in an airplane crash near San Juan, Puerto Rico.
