JIM Rumor Mill

With three of the pennant races all but decided, it's come down the the chase for the American League checkered flag.

What appeared at one time to have been a safe lead for the Baltimore Orioles has dwindled to five games. The team directly in the Orioles' rearview mirror is the New York Yankees.

The Yankees are under guidance of Todd L, older brother of Tim L. A season ago, Tim's Cincinnati Reds took home the Joy in Mudville World Series trophy. Todd is bidding to do the same thing here in 1972.

As previously noted in other postings, the Yankees and Orioles will sqaure off five more times in September. Interestingly, New York and Baltimore rank 1-2 in nearly all pitching and hitting categories.

The AL East flag winner will then face the Texas Rangers, a team that formerly resided in the East as the Washington Senators. Now, a year later, Texas is about to win the West in its first try.

Deadline Deal Dead
A potential blockbuster deadline trade between the San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers fell apart as the clock struck 12. Although no will confirm the actual trade offerings, some of the names bantered about were rumored to be Nate Colbert, Bobby Tolan, Joe Coleman and Dwight Evans. Most likely, the deal also had some draft picks changing hands.

Don't Brett on It
The rumor mill also has learned that Baltimore made a serious run at acquiring recent San Diego draft choice George Brett. It appears, however, that Padres' ownership was unwilling to part with the former California high school star.

DH Deliberation
With one day left to cast their votes, it appears that the designated hitter rule will be put into place for the 1973 season. The only question that remains is whether it will be used by both leagues or only by the AL.

JIM Adds Designated Hitter for AL

Beginning next season the Joy in Mudville will add a designated hitter to its American League play.

A vote of league participants puts the rule in effect with the 1973 season opener. The final tally had six league managers voting for proposal as an AL-only iniative. There were two votes to make it a league-wide rule. Those votes came from Rick B. of the Cleveland and Philadelphia ownership and Bryan S. of Kansas City and New York.

"I fail to understand why the National League would continue to have one position in the batting order occupied by someone with clearly inferior hitting abilities," Rick B. said. "Football teams no longer have the same players play offense and defense, and the game is better because of it. Change is a part of growth, and the National League owners need to wake up or they risk becoming an inferior counterpart to the American League."

However, the Texas and San Diego management team felt differently.

"The fans have been clamoring for more offense," said Dan S. of the Rangers and Padres. "We have responded. Hopefully this leads to more exciting games that puts fannies in the seats. For me personally, give me a good 2-1 pitching duel any day."

Orioles Capture Third Consecutive AL East Crown

The Joy in Mudville playoff picture is complete as the Baltimore Orioles won their third consecutive American League East title.

The Orioles wound up with a JIM-best 114 wins and finished nine games ahead of the New York Yankees. Baltimore will face AL West champion Texas in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the National League playoffs will feature the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Houston Astros. The Pirates have won the NL East crown two of the last three years. Houston becomes the third different team to win the NL West. The Astros clinched the division with a Sept. 9 victory over Los Angeles.

Diamond JIM Notes: The New York Yankees closed to within four games of Baltimore on Sept. 3. However, back-to-back Baltimore wins over the Yankees at Memorial Stadium pushed the lead back to six games and sent the Orioles on their way to the East flag . . . Chicago Cub Billy Williams and Cincinnati Red Tony Perez each hit for the cycle just days apart . . . For the third time in four seasons, the Cleveland Indians will have the No. 1 overall pick in the June amateur draft. Previous top picks by the Indians were infielder Mike Schmidt and outfielder Dave Winfield . . . Pittsburgh's Joe Gibbon and Kansas City's Lee Maye announced their retirements at season's end.
