Angels Land All-Star Catcher from Astros

Disappointed with its production at the catching position, the California Angels landed an All-Star in a trade with the Houston Astros Tuesday evening.

California acquired 34-year-old Johnny Edwards from Houston for pitching prospect Frank Tanana.

Edwards, an All-Star last season for the Joy in Mudville champion Astros, won the National League Gold Glove Award. In 20 games this season, Edwards was batting .308 with four home runs and 12 RBIs for the Astros. Last year he hit .276 with seven homers and 57 RBIs.

The Angels desparately needed an upgrade over catchers Don Pavletich and Joe Azcue. Pavletich was batting just .091 in 13 games while Azcue was at .182 in nine games. Between them, Pavletich and Azcue had no home runs and just three RBIs.

Meanwhile, Houston gets a hard-throwing left-hander. In one start with the Angels this season, the 19-year-old Tanana was 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA. Tanana, the 11th overall selection in last June's amateur draft, will be assigned to Houston's Triple-A team in Mendota.

With Edwards now gone, the Astros will turn to 24-year-old Steve Yeager as their full-time catcher. Veteran Larry Howard was recalled from Mendota to serve as Yeager's backup.

Seaver No-Hits Yankees

New York--Baltimore right-hander Tom Seaver threw the first no-hitter of the designated hitter era Friday night at Yankee Stadium.

Seaver improved his record to 8-0 on the season as he twirled a 103-pitch gem. The 28-year-old walked four and struck out four en route to adding his name to history.

Baltimore toppled New York 6-0 as the former Met dazzled the Big Apple.

Seaver becomes the second Baltimore pitcher to toss a no-hitter. Last season left-hander Ken Holtzman no-hit Kansas City.

Orioles Threatening to Run Away With AL East

Just two months into the season, the Baltimore Orioles are threatening to run away with the American League East crown in the Joy in Mudville League.

After an 18-2 April, the Orioles "cooled" to a 22-6 record in May. Baltimore holds the best mark in the JIM at 40-8, 10.5 games ahead of second-place New York.

Baltimore ranks first or second in nearly every pitching and hitting category in the league. Newcomers Amos Otis (.320-6-39) and Steve Garvey (.265-7-45) have more than made up for the loss of 1972 AL Most Valuable Player Dick Allen. Both Otis and Garvey rank among the league leaders.

Tom Seaver (11-0, 1.92 ERA) and Nolan Ryan (9-1, 2.23) have been forces on the mound. Ryan, the May selection for AL Pitcher of the Month, is averaging 9.36 strikeouts per game. The right-hander has struck out 11 or more batters three times this season.

Despite a JIM-record 114-win season, Baltimore is still stinging from a seven-game World Series loss to Houston last season. It's safe to say the Orioles are bent on returning to the Fall Classic again this season.

Diamond JIM Notes: Cincinnati Red Pete Rose has set a JIM record with his recent 30-game hitting streak. The old mark was 28 set in 1970 by Rose's current teammate Glenn Beckert, then a Chicago Cub . . . Atlanta has benched veteran Hank Aaron in favor of Orlando Cepeda. Aaron, 39, is rumored to be close to retirement. In 133 at-bats this season, Aaron is batting a miserable .090 with no home runs and only two RBIs . . . Cleveland's Chuck Hinton has officially retired. Hinton was a career .250 hitter for the Indians . . . The May list of players getting five hits in one game includes Darrell Porter (Texas), Larry Hisle (Philadelphia), Cesar Tovar (Minnesota) and Gene Michael (New York Yankees) . . . Montreal pitcher Bill Stoneman tied a JIM record by striking out 15 St. Louis Cardinals on May 23 . . . Chicago fans can't be happy. Both the White Sox (17-30) and Cubs (21-33) reside in last place . . . Detroit first baseman Norm Cash has enjoyed a bounce-back season. Cash is tied for the league lead with 13 home runs.
