Indians Set to Pick First in Amateur Draft

For the second time in three seasons, the Cleveland Indians will make the top selection in tomorrow's June amateur draft.

The Indians, 20-42 this season and in last place in the American League East, are rumored to take 17-year-old short stop Robin Yount with the pick.

Cleveland took power-hitting infielder Mike Schmidt from Ohio University two years ago as the No. 1 pick. Schmidt is now the starting third baseman for the Indians. He is tied for the AL lead with 15 home runs.

Last season, Cleveland chose outfielder Dave Parker with the second overall selection. After a promising start last summer, Parker injured his back and has been out of action the entire season.

The Indians had the No. 2 overall pick in 1970. Cleveland drafted pitcher J.R. Richard that season. Richard won 16 games for a last-place team a year ago. He is 6-10 with a 4.39 ERA this year.

The entire draft order appears below:

1. Cleveland
2. Milwaukee
3. Detroit
4. San Diego (from trade with Montreal)
5. Montreal
6. San Francisco
7. Houston (from trade with Kansas City)
8. Chicago White Sox
9. St. Louis
10. California
11. Minnesota
12. Atlanta
13. Chicago Cubs
14. New York Mets
15. Cincinnati
16. Philadelphia
17. Los Angeles
18. Boston
19. Oakland
20. California (from trade with Texas)
21. Pittsburgh
22. New York Yankees
23. Houston
24. Baltimore

Previous No. 1 Picks
1970--Jon Matlack, San Diego
1971--Mike Schmidt, Cleveland
1972--Dave Winfield, Milwaukee

Giants Release Mays

The San Francisco Giants have released 42-year-old outfielder Willie Mays.

Mays was batting must .103 in 39 at-bats with the Giants this season. He had no home runs and only four RBIs.

In his three-plus-year career, Mays was a lifetime .269 hitter with 27 homers and 132 RBIs in 885 at-bats. Last year Mays hit .258 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs.

San Francisco called up 26-year-old short stop Bobby Heise to take May's roster spot.

The Giants also put short stop Hal Lanier on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Infielder Ed Goodson will be added to the Giants' roster.

Indians Tab Yount as Top Draft Selection

The Cleveland Indians made 17-year-old short stop Robin Yount the youngest Joy in Mudville No. 1 overall selection in the June amateur draft history.

The Indians have indicated that Yount will begin his pro career with Cleveland and spend no time in the minors.

Previously, 19-year-old Jon Matlack was the youngest No. 1 selection when the San Diego Padres chose the left-hander pitcher in 1970. The last two drafts have seen collegiate players--Mike Schmidt of Ohio University and Dave Winfield of the University of Minnesota--go as the top pick.

Milwaukee followed by drafting catcher Gary Carter. Detroit then took University of Souther California outfielder Fred Lynn.

After moving up in the draft to the No. 4 pick earlier this week, San Diego chose outfielder Jim Rice. Montreal, San Diego's trading partner, grabbed first baseman Keith Hernandez.

Rounding out the Top 10 picks were: San Francisco--pitcher Bob Forsch; Houston--pitcher Kent Tekulve; Chicago White Sox--pitcher John "The Count" Montefusco; St. Louis--pitcher Jim Kern; and California pitcher Ed Halicki.

A complete listings of all draft choices appears below:
