Orioles Rally Way into JIM World Series
Arlington, Tex.--The Baltimore Orioles ralllied their way past the Texas Rangers and into the Joy in Mudville World Series.
Trailing 3-1 in the eighth inning, Baltimore scored three times and tacked on an insurance run in the ninth to post a 5-3 victory. The win advanced the Orioles into the JIM World Series for the third time in four years. After yielding a fourth-inning solo home run to Darrell Evans, Texas starter Andy Messersmith held the Baltimore bats in check for seven innings. Meanwhile his Ranger teammates scored three to grab the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Rangers did their damage against Lone Star state native and Baltimore starter Nolan Ryan. After giving up the homer to Evans, Messersmith allowed just two Orioles to reach base until the eighth. Baltimore started its rally when Messersmith walked Ken Singleton with one out. After a Johnny Grubb single, Ranger closer Joe Grzenda replaced Messersmith. Grzenda promptly loaded the bases by hitting Bill Madlock with a pitch. Grzenda, an All-Star selection a season ago, then uncorked two wild pitches that allowed Baltimore to tie the game. Amos Otis then put the Orioles ahead to stay with a sacrifice fly to deep right-center field. Texas threatend in the bottom of the inning. The Rangers loaded the bases against Ryan with no outs. However, Texas failed to score. First, right-handed reliever Ray Burris got Hal McRae to ground into a force at the plate. Then, left-hander Ken Holtzman came on to strike out Dave Nelson. Finally, right-hander Bill Slayback ended the inning by getting Toby Harrah to fly out. Baltimore scored an insurance run in the ninth. Slayback finished off the Rangers and the playoffs with a perfect ninth frame. Grubb was voted the ALCS Most Valuable Player. The 25-year-old hit .615 for the playoffs. He drove in three runs and stole two bases. Pirates Sweep Their Way Back to JIM World Series
Pittsburgh, Penn.--The Pittsburgh Pirates guaranteed there would be no repeat champion in the Joy in Mudville League.
Pittsburgh eliminated Houston, last year's titlist, with a 5-3 victory. The win completed the Pirates' sweep of the National League playoffs. It also exacted revenge. A year ago, the Astros defeated the Pirates in the NL playoffs. That was not the case this time around. Playing on its home field for the first time in the NLCS, Pittsburgh built a 5-0 lead and then held on to end Houston's season. The Pirates scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Pittsburgh also plated two runs in the fourth to chase Astro starter Larry Dierker. Those runs came on a two-out double by Pirate starting pitcher Luke Walker. Meanwhile, the left-handed Walker held Houston at bay. Walker shut out the Astros for eight innings before tiring in the ninth. Houston rallied for three runs in the ninth against Walker and reliever Steve Blass. However, Pirate closer Dave Giusti retired Astro catcher Steve Yeager on a pop out with the bases loaded to end the game and series. It was Giusti's second save of the playoffs. NL batting champion Al Oliver had two hits as did first baseman Matty Alou. Carlos May, last year's NLCS MVP, went 3-for-4 in Houston's losing cause. It was another May that starred in this year's playoffs. Pirate catcher Milt May earned NLCS Most Valuable Player honors. The 23-year-old May went 7-for-11 at the plate to set a NL playoff record with a .636 batting average. Orioles, Pirates Set for JIM World Series Rematch
Baltimore--Rewind the tape to the inaugural Joy in Mudville World Series back in 1970. That's the matchup fans will get for this year's Fall Classic.
While times have changed, so have the rules and each club's rosters. For the first time in World Series play, the designated hitter rule will be in effect for the games in the American League park. (Editor's Note: This wasn't the way it worked in real life, but that's the way the computer simulation is set up). The rule change makes for interesting decisions on both sides. Pittsburgh will likely platoon left-handed hitting Norm Miller and righty Jesus Alou. Baltimore must decide what to do with its DH, hard-hitting Johnny Grubb. Will he take the place of one of the Oriole outfielders, or will Grubb stay on the bench as a potential game-deciding pinch-hitter? And while some of the core players remain for each of the teams, both the Orioles and Pirates have some new faces since they last met back in '70. Foremost among these is Bill Buckner of the Pirates. Obtained from Los Angeles in a trade, Buckner finished as the runner-up to teammate Al Oliver in the NL batting race. The Orioles also acquired a key player from the Dodgers. First baseman Steve Garvey came over to Baltimore in exchange for Davey Johnson and Merv Rettenmund. Garvey took over first base from last year's AL MVP Dick Allen who was dealt to Kansas City for Gold Glove center fielder Amos Otis. Game one will feature Pirate ace Dock Ellis against Oriole right-hander Tom Seaver. While both won their respective league Cy Young Awards last season, Ellis is a four-time All-Star and Seaver is a two-time selection. Ellis has spent his entire career with Pittsburgh; Seaver came to Baltimore in a January 1971 trade for Mike Cuellar. Each team features a potent offense and solid pitching staff. Both clubs enter the World Series via sweeps in the league playoffs. 1973 JOY IN MUDVILLE WORLD SERIES: PITTSBURGH vs. BALTIMORE Probable Lineups: Pittsburgh Pirates, NL Champions Dave Cash, 2B Bill Buckner, RF Al Oliver, CF Willie Stargell, LF Richie Hebner, 3B Matty Alou, 1B Norm Miller or Jesus Alou, DH Milt May, C Fred Patek, SS Baltimore Orioles, AL Champions Billy North, RF Ken Singleton, LF Johnny Grubb, DH Steve Garvey, 1B Amos Otis, CF Darrell Evans, 3B Bobby Grich, 2B Chris Speier, SS Bob Boone, C Pitching Probables: Game One: Dock Ellis vs. Tom Seaver Game Two: Bob Moose vs. Jon Matlack Game Three: Luke Walker vs. Nolan Ryan or Ken Holtzman Previous World Series Appearances: Pittsburgh--1970; Baltimore--1970 & '72 Previous World Series Matchup: 1970--Baltimore won Series 4-2. Key Injuries: None Notes of Interest: There are 248 regular season victories between the two teams. Baltimore won a JIM-record 126; Pittsburgh 102 . . . This marks the fourth straight year the American League Series representative plays its home games on grass and the National League champion plays on artificial turf . . . Pittsburgh catcher Milt May enters the Series with the hottest bat. The NL playoff MVP is 7-for-his last 11 (.636). In addition, May has thrown out 41% of would-be base stealers . . . Game two may provide the best pitching matchup. Pirate right-hander Bob Moose is 3-0 in lifetime post-season starts while Oriole left-hander Jon Matlack is 3-1 in his career post-season outings . . . Pittsburgh is 2-4 in World Series games; Baltimore is 7-6 in Fall Classic action. Last edited by Joy in Mudville : 06-25-2008 at 04:39 PM. |

Ellis Stars as Pirates Topple Orioles in Series Opener
Baltimore--For all their regular season success, the Baltimore Orioles have experienced struggles in Joy in Mudville World Series play. Sunday's opener of this year's Fall Classic didn't change that history.
Pittsburgh right-hander Dock Ellis stymied the Orioles as the Pirates claimed a 6-3 victory in game one. Ellis scattered 10 hits, walked none and struck out six to earn the complete game win. While Baltimore right-hander Tom Seaver no-hit Pittsburgh through four innings, the Pirates broke the scoreless tie in the fifth. All-Star third baseman Richie Hebner homered to lead off the inning and give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. From there, Pittsburgh added single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. A pair of runs in the ninth sealed the victory for the Pirates. Hebner, Dave Cash, Bill Buckner, Al Oliver and Matty Alou all collected two hits each for Pittsburgh. Cash drove home a pair of runs and scored twice. Only Milt May and Willie Stargell failed to get hits for Pittsburgh. After giving up a two-run homer to Darrell Evans in the ninth, Ellis retired the final three batters in order to end the game. After winning a JIM-record 126 games this past regular season, the Orioles find themselves down one game to none and will face the National League's Cy Young Award favorite in the Series second game. A year ago, Baltimore won 114 games and then were knocked off in the Fall Classic by Houston. Game two is Monday at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. Pittsburgh will send right-hander Bob Moose to the mound. Baltimore counters with lefty Jon Matlack. Editor's Note: All averages, home runs, RBIs and ERAs reflect the entire post-season.
