Orioles Open ALCS With Easy Win
Baltimore--Tom Seaver and Baltimore Orioles breezed to victory Tuesday in game one of the Joy in Mudville American League Championship Series.
Seaver scattered six hits and struck out 13 in eight innings of work as Baltimore grabbed the opening game win in the playoffs. The veteran right-hander improved to 8-5 lifetime in post-season play. Baltimore broke open a 1-1 game with a four-run fourth inning off Oakland starter Jim "Catfish" Hunter. The Orioles were helped greatly by a fielding error on A's first baseman Gene Tenace. Johnny Grubb, Darrell Evans and Johnny Oates each had two hits for Baltimore. The Orioles had six different hitter drive home runs. Only third baseman Bill Madlock failed to get a hit. Wednesday's game two will pit Oakland starter Al Downing against Baltimore's Nolan Ryan. Phillies Edge Astros 4-3 in NLCS Opener
Houston--While the Philadelphia Phillies waited six seasons to make the post-season, it took them just one game to find victory.
Philadelphia battled back from an early three-run deficit to defeat Houston in Tuesday's National League Championship Series opener. After falling behind 3-0, the Phillies scored three times themselves off Astro ace Frank Tanana in the fourth inning. Philadelphia scored what proved to be the winning run in the eighth when rookie Sergio Ferrer scored on a single by Oscar Gamble. Ferrer replaced second base starter Phil Garner who left the game with an injury after singling to start the fourth-inning rally. Garner, who went 2-for-2, tore a thigh muscle and will miss the remainder of the post-season. Philadelphia won the battle of the bullpens as Pete Falcone, Bill Champion and Joe Hoerner combined for 2.1 hitless innings of relief of starter Pat Dobson. Falcone got the win after getting dangerous Joe Morgan to fly out with a runner in scoring position in the seventh. Champion pitched the eighth and Hoerner nailed down the victory with a perfect ninth. Astro reliever Mike Marshall took the loss for Houston. Houston took a 3-0 lead in the first-inning, but failed to score after that. First baseman John Mayberry hit a two-run homer in that inning. Game two is Wednesday at the Astrodome. Rick Wise will start for the Phillies. Buzz Capra takes the mound for the Astros. Baltimore Breezes Past Oakland Again
Baltimore--There's no doubting this Thomas.
Baltimore designated hitter Gorman Thomas homered twice in his first post-season game as the Orioles blasted Oakland 8-1 Wednesday at Memorial Stadium. The victory gives Baltimore a commanding two games to none lead in the Joy in Mudville American League Championship Series. Thomas, a late-season callup, smacked a three-run homer in his first trip to the plate. The longball off A's starter Al Downing gave the Orioles a 3-0 second inning lead. Thomas, Baltimore's first-round pick in the 1972 amateur draft, later hit a solo home run off Downing in the seventh. Oriole third baseman Bill Madlock also swatted a solo home run. His came in the eighth off reliever Chuck Dobson. Those runs proved more than enough for Baltimore starter Nolan Ryan. The hard-throwing right-hander held Oakland to just four hits and struck out 12 in eight innings. Joe Rudi accounted for the lone A's run when he homered off Ryan in the seventh. Thomas, who hit five home runs in just 25 late-season at-bats, scored twice and drove home four Baltimore runs. Following an off day for travel, the ALCS resumes in Oakland. The A's will attempt to stave off elimination by starting left-hander Vida Blue. Baltimore will pitch either southpaw Jon Matlack or lefty Ken Holtzman. Morgan's Homer Lifts Houston in Game Two
Houston--He's no ordinary Joe.
Houston All-Star second baseman Joe Morgan hit a three-run homer to lift the Astros to a 5-2 victory Wednesday to even the Joy in Mudville National League Championship Series. Trailing 2-0, Morgan's longball off Philadelphia starter Rick Wise in the third inning capped a four-run Houston inning and turned the tide in the game. The Astros added an insurance run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Cesar Cedeno. Philadelphia took an early lead in the game when Wise plated in a pair of runs with a single off Houston starter Buzz Capra in the second. Only one of the runs was earned as Astro left fielder Mike Hargrove's error allowed the second run to score. Capra, however, settled down and pitched well. The 28-year-old right-hander scattered five hits through seven innings. Former starter Ken Forsch bailed Houston out of an eighth inning jam by retiring Larry Hisle on a fly ball and then getting pinch-hitter Lee May to ground into a double play. Closer Kent Tekulve pitched a perfect ninth to lock up the game for the Astros. After an off day for travel, the NLCS switches venues to Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium. The Phillies are expected to start right-hander Steve Stone. Houston counters with either Jim Bibby or Larry Dierker. Late Offensive Onslaught Sends Orioles to Fourth Straight JIM World Series
Oakland, Calif.--For seven innings Friday night Vida Blue held Baltimore in check and kept Oakland's playoff hopes alive.
But then came an onslaught that propeled the Baltimore Orioles into their fourth straight Joy in Mudville World Series. The American League East champion Orioles scored three times in the eighth inning and tacked on seven more in the ninth en route for a 10-4 spanking of the A's. ALCS Most Valuable Player Darrell Evans drove home three runs to lead the Baltimore charge. Short stop Bobby Grich returned to the Oriole lineup after nearly six weeks on the disabled list with a 3-for-4 performance. Third baseman Bill Madlock added three hits while Amos Otis and Johnny Grubb each knocked in a pair of runs. That proved to be more than enough for Baltimore starter Ken Holtzman. The Oriole left-hander allowed just one run in eight innings. He walked just one Oakland hitter. A's pinch-hitter Miguel Dilone ripped a three-run homer off Baltimore reliever Larry Anderson in the ninth. Baltimore will face either Philadelphia or Houston in the JIM World Series. Houston Rides Longball to NLCS Lead
Philadelphia--The Houston Astros sent baseballs into orbit as if they were NASA probes in Friday's pivotal game three of the Joy in Mudville National League Championship Series.
Houston swatted four home runs as it pounded the Philadelphia Phillies 13-5 at Veterans' Stadium. The Astros now lead the NLCS two games to one. After falling behind 2-0, Houston tied the game on a pair of third-inning home runs by pitcher Jim Bibby and second baseman Joe Morgan. After five innings, the game was tied 4-4. However, the Astros pushed across single runs in the sixth and seventh frames. Then came the disastrous ninth for Philadelphia. The Astros sent 10 men to the plate and scored seven runs. Veteran Doug Rader delivered the key blow, a pinch-hit grand slam off Phillies' closer Joe Hoerner to straightaway center field. Cesar Cedeno poured salt into the Philadelphia wounds with a two-run homer off Dick Selma. Morgan finished the game with a 4-for-4 performance to raise his NLCS average to a sizzling .600. Morgan scored three runs, walked twice and drove home two runs. Scipio Spinks earned the win after relieving Bibby, who failed to pitch into the fifth inning. Steve Stone took the loss for the Phillies. Right-hander Fred Holdsworth will start game four for Philadelphia. The Phillies are hoping to force the playoff series back to Houston for a deciding fifth game. The Astros are slated to start left-hander Frank Tanana. Philadelphia won the NLCS opener 4-3 when Tanana started game one. Morgan Slams Astros into World Series Date with Baltimore
Philadelphia--Joe Morgan finished the Joy in Mudville National League Championship Series in grand style.
Although he got just one hit in Saturday's NLCS-clinching game, Morgan made it count. His sixth-inning grand slam capped a seven-run outburst for the Houston Astros and sent them to a 9-0 shutout of Philadelphia. The win pushes the Astros into their third JIM World Series in four years. After dropping the NLCS opener, Houston won three straight playoff games. The Astros will face a familiar World Series opponent, the American League champion Baltimore Orioles. This will mark the third time in the two foes will meet in the Fall Classic. Each club has won a World Series against the other. Morgan was awarded the NL playoffs Most Valuable Player Award. The All-Star second baseman hit .467 with three home runs and nine RBIs. In addition, Morgan scored six times and stole one base. Morgan's grand slam was set up by a costly error on Philadelphia third baseman Don Money. Houston left-hander Frank Tanana earned the victory. The 22-year-old Tanana gave up just four hits and walked none in seven innings. He struck out eight Philadelphia batters. Right-handed starter Fred Holdsworth took the loss for the Phillies. Philadelphia's season ends after winning its first NL East crown in franchise history. Key Injuries: None. Notes of Interest: This year's JIM World Series matches Baltimore and Houston for the third time. The Astros beat the Orioles for the 1972 title; Baltimore downed Houston in last year's Fall Classic . . . This is the sixth consecutive season the American League champion plays its games on grass and the National League representative hosts on artificial turf . . . Baltimore is making its fifth World Series appearance. The Orioles have two championships and carry a 14-12 record in Series play into this fall's opener . . . Houston is 6-7 in Series action . . . Game one starter Tom Seaver took home the Series MVP trophy last year by winning both his starts against the Astros . . . Both teams are riding offensive explosions in the playoffs. While the Orioles outscored the Oakland A's 25-6 in the three ALCS games. Meanwhile, the Astros are coming off back-to-back games in which they hit grand slams. Pinch-hitter Doug Rader cracked a grand slam in game three; Joe Morgan ripped a four-run homer in the final game. Last edited by Joy in Mudville : 10-11-2008 at 07:20 AM. |

Orioles Defeated Astros in JIM World Series Opener
Baltimore--One performance was expected while the other may have surprised. Either way, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Houston Astros 4-2 in Monday's opening game of the Joy in Mudville World Series.
The expected? Veteran right-hander Tom Seaver and relievers Tug McGraw and Rawly Eastwick combined to hold Houston in check as the Orioles grabbed the win. The 30-year-old Seaver won his ninth career post-season game as he allowed five hits in 6.2 innings. He walked three and struck out six before being lifted from the game with two on and two out in the seventh. The surprise? Seaver was replaced by the left-handed McGraw, a pitcher who suffered through an awful post-season a year ago. In fact, McGraw was so ineffective last fall that Baltimore management openly shupped him on the trade market last off-season. This time around, however, McGraw ended the inning by getting the dangerous Joe Morgan to ground into a force out. McGraw, like Seaver a former New York Met, pitched a perfect eighth. That led to Eastwick, the Oriole claoser, who retired the Astros in order to earn in the save. On the offensive side, Oriole second baseman Darrell Evans capped a three-run first inning with a two-run homer off Houston starter Larry Dierker. Baltimore added an insurance run on an RBI single by Bill North in the seventh inning. Game two will match left-hander Jon Matlack for Baltimore and right-hander Buzz Capra for Houston. Note: All batting statistics reflect the entire post-season.
