Here are some important events that occurred while I was wallowing in self pity.

January 1, 1970: Chub Feeney takes over as NL president‚ succeeding Warren Giles‚ who is retiring. Chub was also considered for the role of Commissioner of Baseball, but Bowie Kuhn received more votes.

January 14, 1970: Mets General Manager Johnny Murphy died of a heart attack at age 61. He is replaced by Bob Scheffing.

January 20, 1970: Lou Boudreau is elected into the Hall of Fame.

January 29, 1970: Pitcher Miguel Fuentes is shot and killed during a bar fight in Loiza Aldea, Puerto Rico. He was 20 years old.

February 13, 1970: Pitcher Paul Edmundson died in a car accident in Santa Barbara, California. He was 27 years old.

Opening Day, 1970

Today is Opening Day 1970! There were two games held today.

In the first game, the Expos faced the Reds. Cincinnati starter Don Gullett started off a bit shaky, allowing a hit to leadoff batter Adolfo Phillips. He followed that by walking Don Hahn on four straight balls. Following a double steal, Bob Bailey ground out to Leo Cardenas, scoring Phillips. Gullett then proceeded to strike out the next two batters. The score remained 1 to 0 in favor of Montreal until the bottom of the 3rd inning. Frank Johnson started off the inning with a line drive hit to centerfield. Gullett stepped up and sacrificed himself, bunting Johnson to secondbase. Pete Rose then made the runner in scoring position a moot point as he hit a ball out into the rightfield bleachers. The game remained tight until the bottom of the 8th, when the Reds tacked on two more runs off of a Jimmy Stewart homer to rightfield. The Expos were then held scoreless in the 9th by Wayne Granger.

Opening Day, 1970 Continued

The second game of the evening pitted the Tigers against the Senators. Detroit started off strong, attacking Washington starter, Dick Bosman mercilessly. The first five batters each got a hit, with only one out being recorded when Norm Cash tried to stretch his double into a triple. The 6th batter of the inning, Al Kaline, flied out for the second out, but Jim Northrup scored from 3rd on the play. The next batter, Dick McAuliffe cracked a double, scoring another run. Bosman finally got out of the first when the 8th batter of the inning, Bill Freehan, hit a ground ball to him. Bosman managed to hold the Tigers there until the top of the 3rd when they struck again in the form of a sacrifice fly by Dick McAuliffe. The Senators didn't get on the board until the bottom of the 4th when Frank Howard hit a round tripper to leftfield. The game would end with the score where it was. Detroit starter Mickey Lolich pitched a complete game and only allowed two hits, both to Frank Howard.
