Baseball in Seattle-History with a Twist

In 1970, it felt like my life was over; which is really saying something, considering that I was only 25 years old. As the assistant general manager for a Major League baseball team; I was well on my way to living my dream. And then, as quickly as it had begun, my hopes and dreams were suddenly there at my feet, shattered on the ground.

But, I’m getting ahead of myself; this story really begins three years earlier, when I was fresh out of college with the entire world in front of me. While I was putting myself through college, I worked for the Seattle Rainiers (calling them the Angels, just wasn’t the same). When I was a freshman, I started out in the locker room. Even though I was cleaning up after grown men, I still loved spending every day at the ball park, watching the games. My hard work and dedication (as well as baseball knowledge) caught the eye of Emil Sick, the owner of the Rainiers. Mr. Sick hired me to work in the front office, learning the business and bureaucratic side of the game. I spent the next three years of college; between cramming for tests and partying too much, at the stadium, learning how to run a baseball team. When the California Angels bought the Rainiers from Mr. Sick in 1965; they changed the name to the Seattle Angels, but I got to stay on with the club until I graduated in 1967 with a degree in Business Management. Following my graduation, Mr. Sick introduced me to the man that would further my dreams and change my life.

Dewey Soriano was a pitcher at heart. Although he never made it out of the minors, he was well known and loved by fans when he pitched in the 1940’s. When his dreams of making it to the big show faded and reality sent in, Dewey couldn’t imagine his life without baseball. He went back to school and after graduating with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, took a job with the Pacific Coast League. He worked himself up through the ranks, and eventually became President of the PCL in 1960.

I spent the summer of 1967 working under Dewey, running the PCL and loved every second of it. Dewey and I would talk baseball for hours and hours and became fast friends and I became the catcher to his pitcher. We spent the following year working side by side. But I noticed that Dewey was starting to change, we spoke less and less as he became more and more reserved. He would spend the majority of his day in his office with the door closed. By July, I was starting to become a bit put off and I finally confronted him about it.

Sitting there in his office, he stared at me from behind his desk. He didn’t say anything for the longest time, just stared at me, analyzing me. I stared back, waiting for him to speak. Finally, in a low voice, just above a whisper he said, “Steve, I know I can trust that what I tell you will stay between us, until the time is right.” I nodded solemnly, letting him know that his trust was well placed.

“I’m going to buy a baseball team.”
“Just one? Isn’t that going to make the league uneven?” I asked.
“You don’t understand. I am buying a baseball team, not the league; me.”
“Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”
“Yes, Steve. I am bidding to bring a major league team to Seattle.”

I stared at him, speechless. Trying to fathom the impossibility of what he had just told me. While I knew that Dewey was relatively well off, he was by no means rich and didn’t possess anywhere near the amount of money required to run a decent baseball team-or even a horrible one for that matter.

“Did you rob a bank or something?”
“No, I found an investing partner to put up the majority of the majority of the expansion fee. If the other owners approve this winter, we’ll own a major league team.”

From there, the rest of the 1968 season is a blur. Dewey worked with William Daley, former owner of the Cleveland Indians to put up the majority of the money required for the required expansion fee. In return, Daley would own 47% of the stock and serve as chairman of the board, and Dewey would be the president. Dewey offered me the job of Assistant General Manager and I accepted before he could even finish the offer.

During the owner meetings of 1968, Major League Baseball voted to expand in four cities: San Diego, Montreal, Kansas City and Seattle. Expansion was set to take place for the 1971 season, but fate intervened.

Instead of being given three years to plan and prepare for a Major League team in Seattle, we were given 5 months. Under pressure from Senator Stuart Symington of Missouri, who couldn’t stand to wait until 1971 for baseball to be played in Kansas City, Major League baseball forced the expansion to move up to the 1969 season.

Now, I’ve been to Missouri and Kansas City and St. Louis aren’t THAT far apart! Furthermore, does anyone really believe that Missouri is big enough for 2 major league teams? When Seattle joins the league, we’ll be the only major league team in 800 miles! That’s about the equivalent of three trips from Kansas City to St. Louis
This was just further proof to me that politicians are scum.

To make matters worse, Dewey and Daley were required to pay the PCL one million dollars to make up for the loss of one of the leagues most successful franchises. The Seattle Pilots hadn’t even signed a single player, and already we’re one million dollars in the hole. Not a good way to start a baseball team.

Sick’s Stadium was fine for a AAA ballclub, but wasn’t really cut out for a major league team. There weren’t enough seats, and when seats were added, many of them didn’t have a clear view of the games. It didn’t help that, most games we couldn’t fill the original seats, let alone the new additions. By June, we were loosing enough games to keep the fans at home.

After a dismal 64-98 record, the start of the offseason was actually a relief; until Dewey began to closet himself away in his office again. Unfortunately, this time it wasn’t because he was working on buying a baseball team; in fact, it was exactly the opposite…

"You did what!?" I yelled.
"I sold the team." Dewey replied, infuriatingly calmly.
"You sold THE TEAM!? The team that you bought a year ago!?"
"Yes, I sold the team, Steve."
"Please, please tell me that the buyer is local." I pleaded.
"Not exactly." Dewey stated; looking not in the least bit ashamed.
"What do you mean, 'Not exactly'?"
"Well, I sold the team to Bud Selig."
"Bud 'I tried to buy the White Sox' Selig? Bud 'I live in freaking Milwaukee, freaking Wisconsin' Selig?" I yelled; unable to contain my rage.
"Yes, that Bud Selig" Dewey responded; still infuriatingly calm.

I'd heard enough, I felt betrayed by a man I had considered my friend. I stormed out of the room, slamming his office door behind me.

Dewey had sold the Pilots-my Pilots-to Bud Selig for $12 million. Selig was going to move the team to Milwaukee, freaking Wisconsin and rename them the Brewers after his favorite childhood minor league baseball team. I vowed to do whatever it took to see that this deal did not happen. I needed to find a local buyer; hopefully someone willing to pay Dewey as much or more than Selig had agreed to pay. Someone who would keep the team in Seattle.

I didn't have any trouble finding people who were as upset as I was by this sudden turn of events. Both of Washington's senators, as well as the state attorney general were all upset. Things were looking up when the fellow Major League owners rejected the move to Milwaukee under pressure from the Washington politicians. Fred Danz, a local theater chain owner then came forward with an offer for $10 million. Dewey turned it down though, when the bank came to collect on a $4 million loan it had made to him and Daley; apparently $6 million just wasn't enough to sell the team. Eddie Carlson, owner of Westin Hotels came forward with a nonprofit organization and offered to purchase the team. This deal too, was nixed by fellow owners, who felt that having a nonprofit organization as a teams owner would devalue the other Major League teams.

After a winter of hemming and hawing, the Major League owners tentatively approved of the sale to Selig. On March 17th, 1970, the State of Washington filed an injunction to stop the deal from occurring. In response, Dewey filed for bankruptcy. At the bankruptcy hearing, my boss, General Manager Marvin Milkes, testified that there wasn't enough money to pay the players, coaches and other staff. Due to rules put in place by Major League Baseball, if player salaries were 10 days late, then the players became free agents. If all our players became free agents, then Seattle wouldn't have a team anyway. In light of this situation, the Seattle Pilots were declared a bankrupt team and the sale of the team to Bud Selig was approved.

I HATE Bud Selig...

After a few weeks spent moping and accomplishing nothing besides feeling sorry for myself; I have resigned myself to spend the remainder of the baseball season as a spectator. I've vowed to myself that I will be a true student of the game, I'll do just as much work as I would have if I were still an assistant general manage. Although I feel jaded by my experience, the fact of the matter is: I still love the game of baseball, and since no one has made any offers for my services, I'll ensure that I don't get rusty by keeping up with the league. I have enough money saved up to get by without having a "real" job for a while and frankly, there is nothing I'd rather be doing.

I went to the store today and bought a bunch of notebooks, pens and other supplies to assist in my documentation of the inner workings of the league. With opening day just around the corner, I didn't have any time to waste.

I bought a notebook for each Major League team; when I got home I labeled each one. I then got on the phone and started contacting my connections throughout the majors, requesting as much information as I could get. Once it began arriving, I began recording the information I had received. Using the information provided; as well as the standard 20-80 scouting ranking system I began ranking all the players based on statistics and what scouts were saying about each player.
