It took the full seven games, but the Washington Nationals defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2015 World Series.
It is the second World Series title won by the franchise, having last won in 1997 when the club was in Canada as the Montreal Expos. Washington was swept by the Cleveland Indians in last year's World Series. Derek Jeter has been inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown after retiring this season. Jeter, 41, played 21 seasons in the big leagues with four clubs, was named to the All Star team three times and was the 2010 Gold Glove winner at shortstop. Jeter came up with the New York Yankees in 1995 and remained with the club until traded to the New York Mets during the 2001 season. He left the Mets as a free agent after the 2002 season, signing with the Chicago White Sox. Jeter spent nine seasons with the ChiSox before signing as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers, where he spent the last four seasons. Jeter hit .306 over his career, collecting 2,706 hits, 183 home runs, 1,123 RBI and scoring 1,454 runs in 2,188 games. Jorge Pagan, first-year manager of the Seattle Mariners, was fired after the M's went 67-95 this season. The Texas Rangers announced they will not retain Bill Becker, who took over as interim manager at the end of the season. Under Becker's guidance, the Rangers went 16-17. After three competitive seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, manager Nick Leyva has been fired. The Reds went 84-78, finishing in second place and missing out on the playoffs this season but have gone 258-228 with a division crown since Leyva came aboard for the 2013 season. |

Cooper canned
Sox fire pitching coach Monday, April 18, 2016 BOSTON - After several seasons as Red Sox pitching coach, Don Cooper was fired this morning. Cooper has been replaced by Craig Combs, the pitching coach with AAA Pawtucket the last two years. Boston is off to a 3-9 start this year with a 7.02 ERA posted by the pitching staff. The Red Sox staff put together a 4.78 ERA last season, 5.38 ERA in 2014 and 5.13 ERA in 2013. During manager Kevin Kennedy's 22 years in Boston, the Red Sox pitching staff has posted a 4.24 ERA. "Don's been a very good coach here and I'm definitely sad to see him go," Kennedy said. "It won't be long before he signs on somewhere. It's not his fault that we haven't won a World Series in 10 years, but maybe a little change will do a lot of good. That's the hope anyway." Red Sox ace Johan Santana, who has posted a 7.63 ERA in his first three starts, said he was surprised to see Cooper let go. "He's probably the best pitching coach I've had in my career but its the nature of the business. It happens," said Santana, whose posted two of the three highest season ERA's of his career in the last two seasons. "My personal performance is just that, it's my performance - not Coop's," Santana added. |
