Heintzelman Ends Skid!
Shibe Park,Philadelphia-Phillies starting pitcher Ken Heintzelman ended the Phillies 5 game losing streak with a gutsy performance in which he held the heavy hitting Cardinals to just 6 hits and 3 runs in the Phillies 7-3 victory here at Shibe.Despite walking 7 batters in 7 ans 2/3 innings Heintzelman got the big outs when he needed them including 2 rally killing double plays.Ken's record improves to 6-7.Jim Konstanty earned his 5th save of the year pitching an inning and a third of no hit ball.Hamner,Sisler and Lopata each had two hits for the Phillies. For St Louis, starter Howie Pollett lasted only 5 and 1/3 while surrendering 6 hits and 3 runs(2 earned). His record falls to 6-6

GUTSY!

Phillies Prevail In 13 Inning Marathon
Wrigley Field,Chicago-In a ferocious battle of wills, the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Chicago Cubs 5-4 in 13 heart pounding innings.Early on,it didn't look good for the Fightins' as Chicago nickel and dimed their way to a 4-1 lead after 5 innings of play. The Cubs continuely harassed Phils starter Robin Roberts tagging him for 11 hits and 4 runs in six innings of work.In the top of the seventh with runners at the corners and 1 out Roberts was lifted in favor of pinch hitter Eddie Waitkus who grounded into a run scoring fielders choice. The inning would end with Chicago up 4-2.With two outs in the 8th,Del Ennis came to the plate and destroyed a Dutch Leonard fastball for his 12 homer of the season and his 4th hit of the game.Following the home run,Leonard walked Willie Jones then surrendered back to back singles to Lopata and Nicholson bringing home the tying run.Eddie Miller would ground out to end the inning,Leonards last after allowing 9 hits and 4 runs(3 earned). The Phils half of the 9th would go ground out, strike out, single, ground out.Jim Konstanty would then enter the game to try to force extras. After retiring the first two batters,Konstanty then gave up a double to Smokey Burgess and the Cubs had a runner in scoring position with two outs, here's the PBP of what happened next."Two outs here bottom of the ninth...Rube Walker batting the count is 1 and 1...Here's the pitch...line drive base hit into left...Burgess coming around third he'll try to score...Ennis throws to the plate...he is...OUT AT HOME,WE'RE GOING TO EXTRA INNINGS!"Over the next three innings no one would threaten. In the top of the 13th,Buddy Blattner would lead off with a pinch hit fly out.Eddie Millier then walked,Bill Nicholson singled and Andy Seminick walked loading the bases for Richie Ashburn who was 0 for 6 up to this point.Again, more PBP." here's the first pitch to Whitey...ground ball to second...could be two...over to second for one...the throw to first....he's....SAFE! Whitey Beat it out....Phils lead 5-4!.Granny Hamner would ground out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 13th,Blix Donnelly trying to save the game for Konstanty would put the Cubs down in order giving the Phillies a hard fought 5-4 victory.

Best 0 for 7 game of his career

Rich "Whitey" Ashburn

Bob Rush Dominates Phillies Again
Wrigley Field,Chicago-I don't know what it is but Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Bob Rush owns the Phils like no other pitcher in the league. This time Rush went the distance allowing only 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5 in the Cubs 6-0 shutout of the Phillies.Bob Serena was 2 for 2 with a home run and 3 RBI's and Frank Gustine also homered providing the Cubbies with all the offense they would need.Phillies starter Curt Simmons was roughed up for 12 hits and 6 runs while absorbing his fourth loss.Rich Ashburn had 2 of the Phils 5 hits.

18 scoreless innings vs. Philly
