Young took the loss, only going four innings. He ended up going 6-3 with Boston and had a 3.17 ERA. For the year he was 13-8, 3.18....He official retirement notice is coming up.

Cy Young retires

Young credited his off-season farm work, chopping wood and doing heavy chores, with keeping him in shape to play until he was 44 years old. Then, portly, but without a twinge of pain in his arm, he was unable to field his position and was bunted into retirement.

MLB News: Regular Season ends

For the lucky few going to the playoffs, the season is just beginning. For the majority, the post-season is a just a distant pipe dream -- a season that could have been. Their season is over except for the bashing, rehashing and revamping that takes place in the hot stove league. It's now time for the dominant teams to do battle for the 1911 MLB championship. It will be decided in the World Series. Only the best will be left standing.

MLB News: World Series to begin

The quest for the 1911 World Series championship gets underway today. The regular season is now over and the so-called "second season" begins. For fan and player alike this is the sweetest part of the season -- the World Series. The baseball experts have made their predictions, but teams will do it or die on the diamond. The best team doesn't always win -- sometimes it's the lucky team that is fated to win the crown -- sometimes it's the team that gets hot late in the season that wins -- and sometimes talent wins out and takes the glory. The winner will be one of these teams: Pittsburgh Pirates or the Philadelphia Athletics.

Revised standings:

MLB News: Spring Training Begins
For medical staffs, it's a time to get the players in shape, make sure there are no long-term medical issues and urge caution after coming back from a few months of idleness. Nobody wants to lose a key player in spring training.

Note: The 1912 regular season will start as soon as I set up the historical rosters and depth charts. Hopefully, in a few days.

Plank Tames New York for #200

What would you do after you had just won your 200th game? Run around Shibe Park doing cartwheels, jumping for joy and waving to the crowd? Well, maybe you and I would do that, but not Eddie Plank -- that's not his way.

After he notched number 200, the 36-year-old Philadelphia hurler spoke to the press like he always has -- in a soft, quiet voice. He wasn't doing any cartwheels or even anything resembling a jump for joy. "Obviously it feels very good," Plank commented. "To win this many games, you've got to have a lot of help."

Plank got his milestone victory by beating the New York Highlanders 6-2. He held them to 7 hits in 9 innings and rung up 5 strikeouts with 1 walk.

After sharing his thoughts with the press, he went to the clubhouse. There he was greeted by the guys who had helped him get #200. His teammates showered him with champagne and then gave him a rousing round of applause. That got to him -- for the first time today, Plank's face broke into a big smile.

Plank has posted 200 victories and 159 defeats in his career with a 2.55 ERA.

Reds Chill Zimmerman's Hot Streak

Heinie Zimmerman of the Chicago Cubs came up empty at the plate today and went hitless in 4 at-bats. That put a quick end to his 23-game hitting streak. To make matters even worse, Chicago dropped the game to the Cincinnati Reds 8-1.

In a post-game comment Zimmerman told the press, "It was not a good day today. We lost the game and the streak is over."

Zimmerman is hitting .360 this year with 3 home runs and 26 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .378, 6 walks and scored 39 times.

It's Over: Browns Stop Crawford

The St. Louis Browns got more than a 5-4 victory over Detroit today at Navin Field. They put an end to Sam Crawford's 28-game hitting spree by holding him without a hit in 3 at-bats. But it was no big deal to the Tigers right fielder.

Crawford seemed to feel more for his team than himself.

"I had some great looks at some pitches that I should have hit. I missed some that I shouldn't have swung at. All in all, I wasn't much help with the bat today."

Currently Crawford has 2 home runs and a .398 batting average.
