Game #1 – Cleveland (C. Sabathia) at Chicago (A) (J. Vazquez)

Cleveland 2
Chicago (A) 1
W: C. Sabathia (1-0) L: J. Vazquez (0-1) S: R. Betancourt (1)

A couple of really good pitching performances. Unfortunately, we wasted Javy's. Sabathia went 8 innings, gave up 1 run on 4 hits and a walk, and struck out 10. Javy went the full 9, giving up 2 hits on 6 hits and 2 walks, and struck out 8.

WHITE SOX TRADE

We traded away Joe Crede today. We didn't quite get the backup catcher and prospect, but we got middle reliever Brian Wilson and second base prospect Nick Noonan. Kenny should've traded him last year before he got hurt so he could've received a much better package for him. Wilson will be one of our main middle relievers, and Noonan was assigned to Single A Winston-Salem.

Wilson made his first appearance for us today, pitching 2 scoreless innings. He came on in the fifth and pitched fairly well, giving up only 2 hits that inning. The sixth inning looked like it was going to be horrendous. Castillo led off by bunting for a hit. Wilson then committed an error to allow Asdrubal Cabrera to reach, and then walked Alou to load the bases with nobody out. It turned out to be no big deal, as Wilson struck out the next three to get out of the inning unscathed.

WEEKLY THOUGHTS
Well, definitely not the start we wanted at 2-4. We're 2.5 behind the Royals, tied with the Tigers and Twins, and a game behind the Indians as well. Jim Thome had a good week, hitting .360 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. We didn't hit or pitch very well—a bad combination. We hit .245 and had a 5.03 team ERA, and our bullpen ERA was 0.1 lower than our starters' ERA—a big difference from the spring. So I guess if there's a positive to be found, that's it.

In transaction news, we got a great deal from the Tigers for 25-year old minor league catcher Eric Hollis. They gave up 3 pitching prospects—Brandon Hamilton, Casey Crosby, and the best of the bunch—Rick Porcello. Unfortunately, they're all 19, so I have to hope I last a few years so I can see them develop.

We also put middle reliever Boone Logan on the 60-day DL, as what we originally thought was just a nagging back injury ended up being a torn back muscle. We called up Mike MacDougal to take his place.

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
1B Carlos Pena (TBA) .368, 5 HR, 9 RBI, 7 R

NATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
1B Prince Fielder (MIL) .600, 5 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R

Game #9 – Chicago (A) [3-5] (L. Nunez 0-0, 0.00 ERA) at Detroit [3-5] (J. Verlander 1-0, 3.46 ERA)

We scored a run in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to tie the game at 8. Then in the eleventh, we scored 2 runs on 3 hits to take what I thought was a comfortable lead. Ozzie brought in Thornton in the bottom of the inning to try and close it out. He gave up a leadoff walk to Granderson, then a double to Guillen to bring in Granderson and make it a 1-run game. Thornton then walked Catalanotto and Raburn to load the bases for Ivan Rodriguez with nobody out. Rodriguez gave us a gift and grounded into a 5-2-3 double play, but Renteria hurt us by taking an 0-2 pitch into the hole in left to score Catalanotto and Raburn and win the game. Catalanotto went 2-3 with 2 home runs, 3 runs scored, 2 RBIs, and 3 walks.

Game #11 – Toronto [8-2] (G. Chacin 0-0, 4.91 ERA) at Chicago (A) [3-7] (J. Contreras 1-1, 4.40 ERA)

Toronto lineup: 2B J. Inglett – LF R. Johnson – RF A. Rios – 1B L. Overbay – CF V. Wells – 3B S. Rolen – DH M. Stairs – C G. Zaun – SS R. Adams

This team is frustrating to watch sometimes. Contreras put us in a 4-0 hole after 4 innings, but we tied it up in the seventh. Both teams scored a run in the eighth, and we headed to extras. Ozzie brought out Matt Thornton to start the tenth in relief of Contreras. He got the first batter out, then gave up 2 walks, a single, another walk, and another single before being pulled. The total damage was 4 runs scored in that inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Konerko led off with a solo shot to cut the lead to 3. Josh Fields followed with a base hit, and Jerry Owens hit into a fielders choice at second. Quentin and Dye both walked to load the bases for A.J. Pierzynski. He hit a double down the left field line, which scored Owens and Quentin. Dye tried for home, and the tying run was thrown out. Alexei Ramirez walked, but Cabrera flew out to center to strand A.J. at second.

The Los Angeles Angels announced they have signed 28-year old starting pitcher Jon Garland to a 4-year, $26.04 million extension.

It's always nice to jump out to a 7-2 lead after 1. Toronto scored 1 in the sixth and 3 in the seventh to make it close, but we put 3 on the board in the eighth—thanks to a home run by Josh Fields—to put the game away for good.

A.J. Pierzynski will be out 1-2 weeks with a bruised foot, so we'll put him on the DL and call up Cole Armstrong from Charlotte. So far in Charlotte, Cole was hitting .314 with 1 home run, 6 RBIs, and 5 runs scored.

Not a very good week, going 2-4. We went 1-2 each against Detroit and Toronto. As a team we're hitting .265—tenth in the AL, and our team ERA is 5.93—thirteenth in the AL. Both those numbers have to improve if we're going to finish anywhere close to .500. We're still trying to build our farm system, though it's still so bad that Baseball America ranks John Danks as our only top 100 prospect at number 78, so they rank our system as 28th out of the 30 major league teams. Obviously I've still got a lot of work ahead of me.

AL Player of the Week
CF Curtis Granderson (DET) - .625, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 7 R

NL Player of the Week
C Geovany Soto (CHN) - .591, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 9 R, .591 OBP

Game #13 – Kansas City [6-5] (B. Bannister 0-1, 5.11 ERA) at Chicago (A) [4-8] (J. Vazquez 0-2, 4.71 ERA)

Kansas City lineup: 3B J. Hannahan – SS E. German – RF J. Guillen – LF J. Rivera – 1B R. Gload – DH R. Klesko – CF C. Lubanski – 2B A. Callaspo – C J. Buck
Chicago lineup: CF J. Owens – SS O. Cabrera – DH J. Thome – LF N. Swisher – 1B P. Konerko – RF C. Quentin – 3B J. Fields – 2B D. Richar – C C. Armstrong

HR – CHA: J. Fields (3)

After putting up 5 in the first thanks in part to a Josh Fields grand slam, I made the mistake of thinking we'd be ok. Javy decided to remind me why no lead is ever safe with this pitching staff, though, and gave up 3 in the fourth and 2 in the sixth to tie the game. Jerry Owens scored the winning run in the seventh on a sac fly by Paul Konerko.

Game #14 – Kansas City [6-6] (B. Tomko 0-1, 12.27 ERA) at Chicago (A) [5-8] (L. Nunez 0-0, 11.57 ERA)

Kansas City lineup: CF J. Gathright – SS E. German – RF J. Guillen – LF J. Rivera – 1B R. Gload – DH R. Klesko – 3B J. Hannahan – 2B A. Callaspo – C J. Buck
Chicago lineup: CF J. Owens – SS O. Cabrera – DH J. Thome – LF N. Swisher – 1B P. Konerko – RF C. Quentin – 3B J. Fields – 2B D. Richar – C C. Armstrong

Chicago (A) 6
W: B. Tomko (1-1) L: L. Nunez (0-1) S: J. Soria (3)
HR – CHA: N. Swisher (3)

Ugh. We scored 3 in the sixth to tie the game at 3, but Nunez and Dotel combined to give up 4 runs in the seventh on 5 hits. Swisher hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the inning, but that's all we would get, as the Royals bullpen shut us down for the rest of the game. Swisher had a good game, going 2-3 with a home run, a double, 2 runs scored, 3 RBIs, and a walk.

Typical White Sox baseball. Our first 4 hits were solo home runs. Our first non-homer hit came in the eighth, on a Josh Fields triple. The important thing, though, is that we won the series. Nick Swisher went 2-4 with a home run, a run scored, and an RBI.
