London Wins! London Wins!

Monarchs 2, Royal Canadians 0

The Monarchs were able to save their ace Cameron Boden for game seven and he came up roses for them. Bob Maitland put on a gallant effort, not yielding a hit until the 7th inning, but in the end it's pretty hard to win when your team can't score. He ends the playoffs with a 2-3 record for the Mounted Baseballists.

Top Performers for the Playoffs
-----------------------
Orrin Perrell, SS UK .442, 0, 7
Max Lesage, 2B UK .378, 0, 5
Jonathan Simon, 2B CAN .347, 1, 1

Chokemasters

Offseason news

League of Nations Expands!

Following the successful first season, it was determined that the inaugural members of the League of Nations Council ought to have teams represented as well. Five of them - all four permanent members and 1 of four secondary members were already represented but that left 3 nations unrepresented. For that reason, the League was expanded by four teams:

European League
-----------------
Athens Philosophers
Brussels Painters

American/Asian League
-----------------
Rio de Janeiro Carnival
Sydney Outback

Additionally, the Vienna Meisterflauten have announced they have changed their nickname. They will now be known as the Musik.

Events - April 1920

April 8: The Allied Forces demand that the Netherlands extradite Kaiser Wilhelm II, who has fled there.
April 11: The Netherlands refuse, creating a temporary if unlikely alliance between the Germans and the Dutch (note: only allied countries can trade with each other).
April 14: The Spanish Foreign Legion is founded. +1 culture to Spain!
April 16: The Russians sign a peace treaty with the newly formed country of Estonia. Since no Moscow ballplayers were suspended due to this action, there's no net effect.
April 26: The first dog track with a mechanical rabbit opens in California. +1 culture for all Americans! Only kidding.
April 27: Adolf Hitler proposes his idea of National Socialism to Munich.

Madrid Makes Up For 430 Years of Bad Blood, Trades Top Stars To Mexico City

In a move designed to improve the relations between Spain and Mexico more than anything else, the Madrid Matadors announced during spring training that they are trading their 1-2 punch on the mound of Jesus Galvan (20-11, 2.34 ERA) and Mario "Don Quixote" Ramos (16-18, 2.74) to the Aztecs for a bevy of prospects. "We realize that we have little chance of competing against the likes of England, France, and Germany," said Madrid GM and King of Spain Alfonso XIII. "The people of Spain just want to see a member of the Spanish Empire succeed, and for now that team shall be Mexico City."

All offseason long the baseball people in Brussels watched the League of Nations with a mixture of envy and anger. While other countries concentrated on restoring their economies following the Great War, Belgium spent much of 1919 engineering what they thought would be the greatest baseball team ever assembled. Athletic Belgians were hand-picked from across their tiny nation and drafted into the Painters, where they drilled for hours a day throughout the summer. So far, the fruits of their efforts have been citrusy and delicious.

The Painters featured both the Batter of the month in 1B Gary Lemaitre (.378, 2 HR, 15 RBI) and EURO Rookie of the Month Olaf Mathijssen (4-1, 1.00 ERA). They've nearly doubled their opponents' run totals, 125 to 68, and look nigh unstoppable. The only bits of good news for the rest of the European League is that it's very, very early and there is still the #2 position to win.

Canada's rise has been quite a bit less heralded by the worldwide press; after all, they're just picking up where they left off in 1919. Also, their success is muted a bit by the news that 1B MacKillan Dwywy (.367, 4, 20) will miss the next two months with a torn muscle in his midsection. There was a malicious rumor spread that the injury caused a hole to rupture in his stomach and beer was seen to pour out; this was not true.

Chasing .400

At this moment there are 5 baseballists with batting averages over the mythical .400 mark. These players are:

Luis Vargas, 2B, Mexico City .456. We can say for sure that Vargas will end the season over .400, but it's not good news for the Aztecs. On the 27th of April the speedy second sacker out of the town of Chetumal broke his ankle and will not return to action until 1921.

Gerd Michelson, 2B, Brussels, .416. What is it with second basemen and hiting for average? We know it's not exactly a fielder's position, but jeez. Gerd has shown absolutely no power so far this season and that will probably not help his cause, but as long as the first line of his BA begins with a 4 he's got a good shot.

Aurochs Eckhardt, 1B, Berlin, .410. Eckhardt's been carrying a Teutonic Knights club that so far has not lived up to the high expectations one associates with a playoff berth. Well, you can't blame Berlin's 8-14 on Eckhardt at least. The reigning EURO MVP has 8 extra base hits to go along with his plus-.400 average.

Raimondo Pazzi, SS, Rome, .410. Pazzi's play is a big part of why the Rome Cardinals are right up there in the thick of it. Pazzi went largely unnoticed last year despite hitting .337 while fielding the toughest position in the game. Now the 24-year-old thinks it's time to get some recognition.

Kevin Martin, CF, Sydney, .400. The Sydney Outback have decided to go with the strategy of trying to out-bludgeon their opponents, in the hopes that they'll get tired of running around on the bases against Sydney's horrendous pitching and will then commit errors of their own in the field. So far, that has not worked so well. Nonetheless, Kevin Martin is getting his. His .400 average includes a scorching .481 in the Outback home Professionals' Ballpark, and he turns the effort up with runners in scoring position, hitting .438 with men about to come home.

May 5 - Wolfgang Kapp leads a putsch in Berlin that's failed due in large part to a general strike by the city. Involved in the incident due, ironically, to their severe love of their country (Kapp was a proponent of the "stab in the back" theory that put forward the notion that Germany lost the Great War due to inaction or intentional sabotage by some of its people) are 1B Wilbur Kisslinger, MR Rolf Lammesfelder, and LF Henry Mohr. All three players are suspended from baseball play indefinitely.

May 8 - The communist Red Army of Ruhr forms in Germany. For once, the Teutonic Knights catch a break: no baseball players are involved with this one.

May 10 - The US Congress refuses to ratify the Treaty of Versailles. All Western European nations break the shaky half-alliance they had with the American baseball teams, including Paris' lending arrangement with the US Army Baseball Engineers. Nobody had been sent to the Army as of yet.

May 16 - Germany sends their regular army to fight the Red Ruhr Army. No Berlin Teutonic Knights involved again. Is the fix in???

May 18 - The Chita Republic is formed as a "buffer state" between Russia and Japan.

May 20 - Álvaro Obregón of Mexico flees a mock trial held in Mexico City and starts talking to the military in Guerrero. Will Mexico City have a new GM soon?

If you stand still in the League of Nations, you get passed by. That's what the Brussels Painters learned this past month. After playing .500 ball, they saw their great start slowly erode until the defending London Monarchs surpassed them for the pennant lead. London was simply devastating, winning 20 of 28 games and riding a Pitcher of the Month performance by Cameron Boden (9-3, 2.13).

In the American, the Royal Canadian Mounted Baseballists are threatening to make this a snoozer. Despite losing their first baseman and half of their projected starting rotation to injury, the Canadians out-walked the rest of the league, compiling a league-high .345 on-base percentage including 179 bases on balls in 47 games. 2B Jonathan Simon (.328, 0, 19), CF Alexandre Maurice (.292, 0, 21), RF Rusty Dodd (.296, 4, 15), and 3B Michel Briand (.259, 4, 25) all understand the power of the free pass. When you make a mistake against the Mounted Baseballists, generally you make it with guys on base.

We should also spotlight the Sydney Outback because they are really, really bad. This is, we know, only the second season of the League of Nations, but they might just be the worst club of all time. The craziest part is, the hitting is actually not too bad. It's not great (8th in the A/A in runs) but there are worse offenses out there. CF Kevin Martin (.380, 6, 29) in particular still has a shot at hitting .400 this season, so the fans do have something to cheer about. What's laying this club low is their pitching. Sydney's team ERA of 5.75 is almost a run and a half higher than the next-worst team (the US Army Baseball Engineers, who sport a 4.29). They've allowed nearly twice as many homeruns as anybody else (28 vs. the USA's 22) and have to date walked nearly twice as many men as they've struck out. This club is almost worth watching just to see the depths it can reach.

Well, Why Don't We Look At Those Team Stats?

The story of the American/Asian league, aside from the awfulness of the Outback, is probably the way the Royal Canadians have mounted an assault on first place with a hitting and pitching attack that are both pretty average. There are two ways of looking at this. On the one hand, perhaps they are more vulnerable than people might think. On the other, they're winning a lot of ballgames without their best hitter in 1B MacKillan Dwywy (.367, 3, 20) and will benefit sometime this year from the return of Bernard Thivierge (11-1, 1.97 ERA last year before he was shut down with a life-threatening abdominal injury).

As expected, the Mexico City Aztecs, who combined their own twin staff aces in Manuel Figueroa (7-4, 2.57) and Jose Gonzales (5-3, 3.71) with the Madrid Matador's top 2 pitchers Jesus Galvan (8-5, 3.11) and Mario Ramos (7-1, 1.51), have the best pitching staff in the business. Their lackluster hitting is what's holding them back.

The European hitting story is one of haves vs. have nots. The top 5 teams have a mean batting average of .286, compared to a .265 by the bottom 5. The haves are bringing in about 257 runs per team compared to 220 by the have-nots, a difference of almost a run per game. The have-nots do have more stolen bases (due primarily to Brussels' "sit on the bases and wait for a 3-run triple" philosophy), but even by crazy statistics that are made up by the kinds of people who live in their mothers' basements the haves are ahead 249 runs per team to 208 (the mom's basement statistic here is Base Runs, which were transported into 1920 by some application of the Tesla/Einstein time travel method that we do not want to think about too much).

How Are Last Year's Champs Doing?

Given the addition of four new teams this year and all the turmoil associated with that sort of thing, we felt it would be interesting to take a look at how last year's Big Six and Most Valuable Player award winners were doing so far:

2B Jonathan Simon (.328, 0, 19) is still chugging along. He was mentioned in this month's report as one of the four Mounted Baseballists who "gets it" when it comes to the base on balls. Adding to his offensive prowess is a high-minded approach to defense that has thus far seen him commit just 3 errors all season long for a .986 fielding average.

Steve Daly (7-4, 2.30) has already matched his loss total for all of last season but he isn't letting that bring him down. He's still 3rd in the A/A in earned run average and also has the 3rd-fewest baserunners per 9 innings with 9.57. A good push by him coupled with the New York Giants' improved play as a team might just garner him a second consecutive Big Six.

Aurochs Eckhardt (.387, 3, 30) is still not showing any signs of slowing down at the advanced baseball age of 38. The only thing right now between him and a second MVP is the fantastic play of Vienna Musik RF Veit Ahrenthal (.403, 6, 32), who is flirting with .400 into June. Eckhardt is right there behind him in the hitting race and also ranks among the league leaders in on-base percentage, triples, and home runs.

Of the four award-winners, it could be said that Yvon Calzolai (7-5, 3.30) is the one who has fallen the farthest from his lofty perch. He's barely over .500 and has lost 3 straight games. He still ranks in the top 6 in both strikeouts and fewest walks per 9 innings so it would be a mistake to count him out of this year's race.

Events - June 1 to June 30, 1920

June 1 - The first game of the Negro National League is played. The Chicago Defenders are already in too tight a position to defect but they do get a culture bonus.

June 4 - The Polish - Soviet War ramps up as the Polish Army takes Kiev. Suspended from baseball duties are 2B Lev Jivulin, reserve SP Hedeon Ayatskov, reserve 2B Philip Vladislavsky, and SP Joseph Vranitsky (who was already shelved for the season with a ruptured bicep).

June 8 - Joan of Arc is canonized. +1 culture to the Paris Revolutions!

June 10 - Alvaro Obregon's forces invade Mexico City. Some Mexico City Aztecs who are loyal to the current government, never to return. President Venustiano Carranza is killed after he flees to San Antonio Tlaxcalantongo and Adolfo de la Huerta takes command of Mexico and the Aztecs.

June 21 - The US Postal Service rules that children may not be sent by parcel post. This has no bearing on the game but I thought I would share.

June 26 - Greece attacks Turkish troops in the Greco-Turkish War. The following Greek players are suspended until the cessation of conflict:

SP Demetrius Antonatos
SP Arsenio Melonakos
SP Evander Moscopolis
CL Xenos Glezos
C Agape Lalagos
2B Juliun Panayiotou
SS Timeus Rachiotis
SS Philander Stavrakis
CF Artemis Skandalis
reserve MR Christian Karabachos
reserve C Zander Mavrokordatos
reserve 3B Christos Lambrinos
reserve LF Ptolemy Poulakis

Interesting idea. Will you be using your Training Matrix with these teams?

I haven't yet because just keeping up with the league has so far had me struggling to keep it going at a pace that keeps me interested. Once things start to stabilize after a few years I might find myself using it again.

The only constant in life is change, and the Mexico City Aztecs proved that with a devastating 22-9 record in July that vaulted them to the top of the America/Asia League. They loaded up on starting pitching this offseason, and that turned out to be a great move; the loss of Manuel Figueroa (10-6, 2.67 ERA) and Carlos Diaz (18-8, 2.96 last season) haven't so much as phased this ballclub. Mexico City's recipe for success: play the Royal Canadian Mounted Baseballists even (3-3 against them last month, 5-7 overall) and beat up everybody else.

Not to be outdone, the European League had its third different leader after 3 months in 1920. This time it was the Berlin Teutonic Knights, 42-18 in their last 60 games. They leapfrogged a slumping London Monarchs club (2-8 in their last 10) to assume the top spot. The name of the Knights' game is hits, steals, and strikeouts: they lead the league in each of those 3 categories. Pacing the league in that last category is Verner Schumann, who is also by the way sporting an impressive 12-1 record. If the 21-year old righthander needs to work on anything, it's controlling his pitches; he also leads the EL in walks.

Where Are They Now?
Is There A No-Hitter Curse?

Last year, two pitchers shocked the league by not giving up a single hit in 9 innings of play. Although this is classically a symbol of pitching mastery, where these guys have gone since then might surprise you.

Hedeon Ayatskov, Moscow Proletariat. The season had barely gotten underway - April 22 - when Ayatskov stymied the Paris Revolutions. It was looking like both Ayatskov and his team were headed for greatness but it was not to be. The Proles fell apart after a decent start and finished dead last in the EL. Ayatskov wrenched his back in mid-June and missed the remainder of the season, finishing 6-7 despite a solid 3.58 ERA. This year, the going has been much tougher. To date, he's 2-4 in 6 starts with a 6.98 ERA and has issued nearly 3 times as many walks (29) as strikeouts (11).

Ernest Robin, Paris Revolutions. Six days after Ayatskov went down for the year, Robin spun a no-no of his own against eventual playoff team Berlin. Robin's no-hitter saw much better control than Ayatskov's - he gave up 3 walks instead of 7 - but it still ended up being quite a bit out of place with the rest of his career. He finished 1919 with a 6-13 record and a 4.29 ERA. This year he seemed to start well enough (4-5 but a 3.69 ERA). However, he was traded to the last-place Amsterdam Admirals in a multi-player deal for ace Melvin Hopstaken. Robin has yet to win a game with his new team (0-7, 7.07 ERA).

Events - Ju;y 1 to July 30, 1920

July 1 - Germany declares neutrality in the Polish-Russian War. At the same time, the war ramps up quite a bit, and the following players are suspended until its cessation:

Moscow
-------
SP Scott Ellis
SP Seriozhenka Erbanov
IF Gavrel Pinchover
LF Yuri Pahmutov
reserve MR Pyotr Ivanisov

July 3 - Arthur Meighen takes over as Canada's Prime Minister and also GM of the Royal Canadian Mounted Baseballists.

July 16 - Britain passes a law suspending jury trials in Ireland in an attempt to restore order. No London Monarchs are called upon to assist in this matter.

July 28 - The 19th Amendment is passed, granting womens' suffrage in the USA. I'd give culture but I'm pretty sure I already did for this cause.

So the leaders in the early goings of the 1920 pennant races are the same as the guys in the 1919, but there are also teams lurking just off the pace in case somebody falters. The Royal Canadian Mounted Baseballists had another strong month and now that they have the heart of their order back in 1B Tim Kinch (.333, 0. 13), LF Ron Nock (.363, 3, 31), and 3B MacKillan Dwywy (.305, 3, 38), they might just have the talent to win it all this year. Of course, the Mexico City Aztecs might have something to say about that with August A/A Pitcher of the Month Manuel Figueroa (17-7, 2.31) leading the charge.

And the Europeans have, once again, the London Monarchs staving off the Berlin Teutonic Knights. London rode a .377 hitting month from 2B Isayu Konda (.329, 9, 59 on the year, and August was the best performance in the league), and if their 17-13 record was less than impressive, the good news is that they were back to their winning ways following a sub-.500 June. Berlin, on the other hand, went 7-0 in Dustin Meise's 7 July starts (15-3, 1.64) and 7-14 with everybody else to let Team England back into the race.

The real stories for August, though, concern the 3rd place teams in each league. The Chicago Defenders barely avoided the cellar in 1919 (they finished 7th with a 68-86 record) and as recently as the 11th of last month they were caught making a white-flag style trade in moving aging Mexican-American star Edgar Diaz (.358, 5, 69) to his semi-native Mexico City for a trio of prospects. The justification for that move was the sudden arrival of OF Vaughn Wolf (.292, 3, 23), who promptly tore a muscle in his back and was shelved for the rest of the year. Despite that setback, the Defenders launched an all-out attack on the rest of the league, going 23-7 including a 13-game winning streak to put them just behind the leaders.

Paris' Revolution is in full swing as well. They had a similarly gaudy 21-9 record for July, passing the fading Brussels Painters and very nearly vaulting into a playoff spot. Paris has been very aggressive with trades with sister cities Brussels and Amsterdam but up until last month they really weren't seeing big returns on those deals. What a difference July makes. Former Admirals hurler Melvin Hopstaken (16-8, 2.98) is now the Revolution's leader in victories and ERA (actually, technically Joel Lemoine (15-11, 3.21) leads with 15, but only because 7 of Hopstaken's wins came with his old team). If the Revolutions' pitching stats don't jump out at you, bear in mind that the Stadium de Triomphe is a real bandbox. Of course, the flip side of that is that guys like LF Sebastien Guilbert (.335, 0, 54) aren't as good as their numbers suggest, but we're fine with that.

MVP Watch
A Look At Some of the Candidates Around The Leagues

It's getting to be time to start considering who is the real cream of the leagues. Who gets our vote? It's still early but we're looking at these guys:

America/Asia
--------------
LF Bryan Young, Chicago Defenders (.347, 2, 65). Any discourse on the success of the Defenders ought to begin with talk of Young's fantastic season. Granted, we devoted an entire paragraph to that subject and didn't mention him once but, well, we're just not very good. Young doesn't do any one thing better than any other hitter but excels in all facets of the game, from power (27 doubles and 12 triples so far) to speed (19 steals in 23 tries) to defense (actually he's not a very good center fielder but he does play center field at least).

CF Kevin Martin, Sydney Outback (.370, 10, 56). The Outback have reportedly turned down several offers by the Royal Canadian Mounted Baseballists and the London Monarchs to acquire this guy, and it's not hard to see why. He shines out as one of the few bright spots in a tough inaugural season for Aussie baseball. He's got a solid shot at an A/A triple crown and the scariest part is, the kid's still just 25 years of age.

LF Ron Nock, Royal Canadian Mounted Baseballists (.363, 3, 31). When Nock couldn't see straight earlier this month and had to miss half of it with blurred vision, the collective sighs of thousands of Canadians could be heard as far south as Detroit. Even with the brittleness, you can't help but put a man who gets on base at a .449 clip and with 32 steals on the season right smack into the MVP race.

Europeans
-----------

LF Veit Aehrenthal, Vienna Musik (.362, 13, 66). A .264 batting average for the month of July means that Aehrenthal is no longer a strong candidate to hit .400 and that just might spell the end of his MVP hopes as well. It's not that Aehrenthal isn't a fantastic hitter, it's just that his team is so, so bad and you just know that the voters will prefer someone on a contender.

LF Bryon Feveryear, London Monarchs. Feveryear's stock is dropping because the man just can't stay healthy. Last year he missed all of June and most of July with a strained hamstring and had to sit out some of the World Series because he couldn't lift his arm above his shoulder. This year things were looking good until he fractured a rib sliding into second for his 57th steal of the season. He won't be back until mid-August at the earliest.

2B Isayu Konda, London Monarchs. The always quiet Konda is a symbol of the empire whose sun never sets and, increasingly, a hero to his Indian countrymen (that's Hindu Indian, not the woo-woo kind) (we apologize for the insensitivity. The person who made the above parenthetical remark has been sacked). If he has a weakness, it's that he's only an adequate second sacker, and enterprising teams can take some advantage of that.

Events: August 1-31

August 3: Presidential elections are held in Mexico. Hooray stability! +1 culture for the Aztecs.

August 8: A bomb explodes in Wall Street, killing 38 and wounding 400. Fortunately, the Giants were out of town that day.

August 11: London forms the "Flying Squad", later nicknamed "The Sweeney" due to Cockney rhyme slang that just makes my head hurt to think about it. Nonetheless, +1 culture for the Monarchs.

August 20: A big chunk of Carinthia Province decides to become part of Austria rather than Yugoslavia. That also means more fertile baseball ground, and as such the Musik add 2 prospects to their rolls.

August 28: Alvaro Obregon is announced as elected President of Mexico.

August 29: Citing a need to have its home in a city without a baseball team, the League of Nations relocates to Geneva, Switzerland.

A tough month for 1919 stalwarts combined with two just plain huge summers for the Chicago Defenders and the Paris Revolution to turn the league standings completely on their head. Chicago is 40-15 since July 3 thanks to the best hitting in the American/Asian League (a .286 team average) and the co-leader in wins in Juan Zorros with 23. The 35-year old Zorros is quite the story; last year he was just 8-11 with an ERA of 5.07 and was banished to the bullpen for much of the year. Now he's among the best pitchers out there.

Paris is also proving that when it comes to the League of Nations, great offenses triumph over all. Paris also leads their league in average (.290), not to mention hits (1434), runs (716), and home runs (51). Yes, they play in a bandbox, but they're just plain good as well. On the pitching end, Joel Lemoine was a Big Six candidate last year and has emerged from .500ishness with an 11-2 record since the beginning of July to emerge once more.
