End of Season, 1920

The Playoffs Are Upon Us

2 of the 4 teams to reach the playoffs in 1919 also get in in 1920. Of course, that also means that 2 of the 4 teams are tasting the post season for the first time.

Mexico City vs. Chicago
London vs. Paris

(side note: I did things in this game designed to give the league less parity than in a regular, computer-run OOTP league. So far, though, the standard deviation of wins and losses is still .074, which is more in line with the 1960s than the 1920s, and the coefficients of runs scored and runs scored against are also fairly low at 9.4% and 12.6% respectively. Actually, runs allowed isn't too bad; that's high in part because I had Mexico City plunder Madrid to make one awesome rotation and also because Sydney and Athens were so, so bad. At that, Athens was bad in large part because they had to pull so many players off of their roster due to the Greco-Turkish war.)

What was billed as a pitching matchup between two of the best pitchers in the American/Asian league turned into a matchup between 4th starters after a rain delay in the 5th inning. Chicago's long man turned out to be the superior one.

The good news for London is, this was only one game. Fat Freddie Turvill couldn't get out of the 4th and his replacements fared no better. Paris, the top hitting team in the European League for the second straight year, blasted London for 20 hits and this one was never close after the 2nd. Catcher Laurent Garnier finished a double away from a cycle.

Cats Evans was not having the best of days, and it all ended for him on a grand slam homerun by Jose Rodriguez in the 5th. "I just couldn't get enough movement on my zig", said Evans following the game. "For great justice." This ties the series at a game apiece and throws homefield advantage to runner-up Mexico City.

To avoid going down two games to none, the Monarchs brought in their ace Cameron "London Fog" Boden for this one, and he - or, it should be said, the defense behind him - was masterful. Boden stranded 8 baserunners over the course of this game and also induced 2 double plays in more or less shutting down the Revolution offense. The series is now even and headed to London.

The rain delay in Game One allowed both the Aztecs and the Defenders to start their aces again on short rest. Unfortunately, only one of them pitched like an ace, and the end result was an easy Chicago victory that wrests back homefield advantage for the first round. 3B Tim Johnson led the hitting attack with 3 hits in 4 at-bats and 2 RBIs, including the game-winner.

For the second time in three games, the London Monarchs tried Fat Freddie Turvill, and for the second time in three games the Revolution tore him to shreds. This time he only lasted 5 innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. At that point, Lee MacKimmie (2-4, 5 saves, 3.90 ERA in the regular season) and Carl Shone (2-0, 4.09) promptly took a game the Monarchs had a slight chance of winning and made the deficit unbeatable. Herve Fischer, Dwight Bernard, and Didier Bouchard all had 3-hit games for Paris.

Cats redeemed himself for his rocky Game 2 start and Clarence Ruffin added a 2 out, 3 run double in the 8th to put the Chicago Defenders within one game of the World Series. "His fastball was really lighting it up", said catcher Tim English, who was interviewed instead of his battery-mate because the reporter was growing tired of AYB references. "And his change? For the sake of Mexico City, I won't mention the change." The series continues (and may conclude) in Mexico City tomorrow.

Paris wasn't happy with the Game 2 performance of Urbanus Gruppe and so went with 19-game winner Melvin Hopstaken instead. Hopstaken, who was really only average in the regular season against London (2-3, 3.70 ERA) came up roses against them this time around. Moise Gros is also showing he can play several levels harder in the postseason. In the regular season he hit .280 against the Monarchs, which is good but not at his regular levels. So far in the series he has hit .444 (8 for 18) and has two game-winning RBI to his name.

NOTE: Monarchs RF Cameron Wakefield left the game with a dislocated shoulder. He is not expected to return to the playoffs.

Mexico City's pitching was uncharacteristically mediocre this entire series, and Game Five was the capstone. Mario "Don Quixote" Ramos, brought in from Spain to, theoretically anyway, provide the Aztecs with the kind of pitching staff that would set records in the regular season and blow through the playoffs, struck out a lot of guys when it didn't matter and gave up a lot of hits when it did. The Defenders never trailed in this one, and as the game became increasingly less in doubt, the Mexico fans did things with their beer bottles that we dare not speak of.

Losing RF Cameron Wakefield proved to be the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back for the Monarchs. They were already without their first string "camel", the Sopwith Camel Byron Feveryear, and also had to play the entire month of September without LF Joe Hollinger and stud 2B Isayu Konda. Additionally, even though the Longstop Orin Perrel insisted his ankle was fully recovered, he hit just .111 for the series and never got untracked. When fully half your lineup is out, it's hard to make the playoffs, let alone win games once you're there.

But this series isn't about London's injury problems, it's about Paris's grand display of clutch. Urbanus Gruppe tired late, but he pitched well enough to win and more importantly put the Revolution in good position to use ace Joel Lemoine for 3 games in the World Series. They'll need him, as Chicago is tough.

If Joel Lemoine could start every game for the Revolution, they'd only need 8 playoff games to win the World Series. Tonight he scattered 5 hits through 9 as Paris scored all the runs they needed in the first 3 innings. Herve Fischer continued his slugging ways for Paris; the hulking center fielder went 3 for 4 and now is hitting .500 in the postseason.

Paris will do this to teams. Down 5-2 after 3, Chicago Defenders manager Stephano Verrochio took the bold move of relieving starting pitcher Cats Evans for a pinch-hitter. In one sense, this move didn't really backfire since the Revolution had already scored all the runs they would need to win this one. On the other hand, the guys who came in to relieve him yielded 11 runs in the last 5 innings. The series travels to Chicago now, where it could end without going back to Paris.

Chicago thought for sure that they finally had Joel Lemoine stopped. They had a 3-1 lead going into the 9th and starter Juan Zorros had completely shut down the Revolution, surrenduring just 6 hits through his first 8 innings. But let Paris glimpse just a sign of weakness and they will pounce. Rene Payen and pinch-hitter Michel Granger laid into Zorros' slowing fastball for two base hits in 3 pitches, then catcher Laurent Garnier came to the plate. Garnier - who spent all of 1919 as a member of the US Army Baseball Engineers as part of a lending agreement - swung his way into an 0-2 count, then fouled off 4 pitches and worked the count to 2-2. On the 9th pitch of the at-bat, he squirted a seeing-eye single between first and second to tie the game at 3 apiece. 2 batters later, Gilbert Perrin socked in the go-ahead run on a double.

Following this demoralizing loss, we can't see Chicago winning another game, let alone the Series. Nonetheless, it continues tomorrow.

Facing a sweep in the most important games of the year, the Chicago Defenders made the bold move of replacing their #2 starter Daryl "Cats" Evans with Pedro Ruiz. Ruiz was no slouch himself in the regular season and had outpitched "Cats" in the playoffs. For 8 innings, it looked like this gamble had paid off. But in the 9th the Revolutions saw their opening and struck. Ruiz was hammered for a single, a sacrifice, a double, a ground-out, a walk, a single, and two more walks, the last with the bases loaded.

And that was all she wrote. Praise be to the Paris Revolution and their Reign of Terror lineup. 1920 is over!

Overview

Nobody was hurt by the Great War as badly as Holland. Nobody. The Baseball Brigade? Hah. We wish we were treated as well as the Baseball Brigade. At least they didn't have their homes and families bombed out by both the Central Powers and the Allies before they all got gassed. We're sorry if we're being impolite, but facts are facts. Frankly, the Admirals have been lucky to play as well as they have. For two glorious months in the midst of summer, Admirals fans were momentarily able to forget their worries and cares and at least pretend that their national team was, on average, as good as anybody else's. Then September hit and all those hopes were dashed away.

There really wasn't a lot to get from this that was positive. Yes, they did manage to finish ahead of Athens and Moscow, but they weren't that far ahead. The pitching was poor and the hitting just as bad. The defense? Let's not talk about the defense. We just ate lunch.

1B Emil Luyks - Luyks didn't play at all in 1920, and a guy who can't get playing time for Amsterdam is not a guy worth talking about.
3B Franz Tijl - Tijl may never walk again after suffering a severe injury in July. Thanks, baseball!

Pitching

Lots and lots of guys used last year. There's a couple reasons for that. One, the team wasn't very good and that's what you do with bad teams: you try out lots of different players and you see what fits. Two, we traded several of our best countrymen off to France and Belgium because that way we could vicariously experience their success from afar. Melvin Hopstaken and your World Series ring, we salute you! And hope that you'll come back someday as well! As for the rest of the staff, one could charitably call them Vasil Bouwman and a bunch of Hollandaise sauce. Oh, to think of the great Dutch pitchers who will never be because of the Great War!

We don't want to talk about the rotation after Bouwman but the editor says that we must. Robert Bax was recalled at the end of June and had a good enough second half that he's pretty much guaranteed a slot in the rotation. After that, Dobbe Arden and Yannick Rikxoort did little to distance themselves from the rabble aside from their awesome Dutch names. Ernest Robin came over from the Paris Revolution in the Melvin Hopstaken trade and... well, let's just say that the way he pitched, he fit in very well on this team. I cannot even type out Joe Nelis's name without crying. Sniff.

The Admirals did do one thing well last year, and that was run. Run the basepaths, run to first base on a routine ground ball, run away from their problems... all things that had to do with running on a literal or figurative basis, Amsterdam excelled at in 1920. 2B/SS Haico Westerhout led the league in steals with 90, and because of that we are inclined to overlook the fact that he did nothing else well except maybe field (and the jury is still out on that). Outside of him, Claude Goncalves turned out to be the gem of the Hopstaken deal, 1B Sibrand Petiet looked like an emerging young star, and Tom Alkemade wasn't horrible in 447 at-bats. We ask you to please look away from the top of the center field position; it is said that to even look at such depths will cause the viewer to drop into deep melancholy.

Athens Philosophers

Overview

The Athenian's first year on the baseball diamond was felled by two things: pitching and the Greco-Turkish War. All this "philosopher" stuff is nice, but we Greeks want back the land that is ours, and by that we mean the land that was ours 3,000 years ago. What kind of name is Turkey, anyway? That's a bird whose meat you consume when you want to lose weight, not the proper name of a country. Anyway, the whole war thing is probably going to restrain our ability to compete for a few years. Too bad, too, because early on things were looking pretty good. In a few years, when we get all our troops back, all the world shall be shouting out the names of the Athens Philosopher-Kings. But for now we'll leave it at Philosophers because the other way sounds kind of pretentious.

Our pitching staff was so bad last year that it was basically the same as being really, really good. Or at least good to watch. That is all we care about. Who wants to see a 2-1

catch those long balls given up by our pitching staff). Every time someone scores a run on either side, we release a babboon into the outfield and have it chase after our batboys for a few minutes. It is something like an Olympic race, only with a better ending most of the time because everybody who outruns a babboon is a winner in their own way.

The hitting, on the other hand, was... decent. The lineup didn't have the attention to pure athleticism that we Greeks like to see our men have, but the try-outs weren't quite as "open" as we'd like them to be. The outfield was swift, agile (well, more agile that the Paris Revolutions' outfield, at least, and that was the best team in the game), and possession of fine hand-eye coordination skills. Gerrie Talboom even won the batting contest in Athens' first try. We would be more jubilant about that but the world sees the tremendous achievements of the Greeks already and this would be piling on. The infield wasn't quite so hot.

Overview

Our late-season surge was just not quite enough to unseat Paris or London. Believe you und me und everybody else, this talk of splitting into divisions is very appetizing to we Deutschlanders. We aren't terribly happy at the prospect of being called "Eastern" Europeans - we are schmack dab in the center of the continent - but if that was the way of things this year we would have won the division in early September rather than being knocked off in the last day.

We're not sure exactly what happened in April, but whatever curse the evil French put upon us, it completely dissipated in May and June; in fact, it appears that our anti-French magicks led the day for those two months. We would also like to see a better showing in home runs, as we feel that these best symbolize the powerful working spirit of Deutschland. Our pitchers leading the European League in strikeouts was a good touch, though.

Berlin was not extra lucky with their rotation last year, they were extra providential. After all, luck is the residue of design, so it is obvious that the T-Knights planned it this way. Mostly, at least. The falling-apart of Hahn Franckel, who was 15-9 in 1919, was not expected at all. His sudden lack of ability coupled with France's cruel requisitioning of 2 other members of the 1919 Opening Day rotation caused the team to look to a couple of 21 year olds for salvation. One of them, Verner Schumann, filled into the role nicely. Is his control a little bit suspect? Ja, but that just makes the hitters a little more afraid of his grosse fastball.

The other youngster, Hubertus Mauser, behaved a little bit more like one might expect a young kid thrown into the fire to perform. Not to say he did poorly; he just has room to grow on. Dustin Meise is the ace of the staff, and rounding out things are Sebastian Morlock, who is maybe a little above average but who can be counted upon to eat innings, and ace relief pitcher Ulin "The Desert Fox" Rommel, who has pitched the second-most games in League of Nations history.

The T-Knights offense was a mix of young and old with not a whole lot in between. We Deutschlanders are not particularly known for worrying, so we naturally are not worried about this, but if we were so inclined (for example, if we were Dutch), we might point to the fact that our two best hitters are almost old enough to remember the Franco-Prussian War. It is true that Germans, due to superior genetics, last longer than other people do. Therefore, it doesn't bother us too much. Another concern, as we have stated earlier, is that we'd like more power, but we are sure our youth will be able to discover the hidden secret of the home run.

Overview

The Brussels Painters looked a bit like the month of March for a chunk of 1920: after coming with a lion-esque 18-4 record, they cooled right down to a lamby 7 games under .500 for the next 3 months. Then they thwarted our little parallel by sporting a combined record of 34-21 over August and September, a record which is reminiscent of an animal slightly further along the lion side of the spectrum than the lamb one. A wild boar, perhaps?

We were asked to speak about our philosophy. We could read between the lines of this request and would like to say that yes, we do have one. Our philosophy is one of unrestrained free trade with anyone who would care to engage us. We plan on using the bits and pieces that our nation generates for us, keeping the ones that fit, and finding good homes for the ones that don't. We aren't nearly as caught up in nationalism as so many of these other countries are. In 1920 we had the best pitching and defense in the European League, but in the future if the trade winds tell us that offense is what there is to be gotten, we will not take offense at taking offense.

Only five men started games all last year for the Painters. 3 of them were under 30. It is a great place to start and continue to grow on. Onne van den Akker set the major league record for victories in his first season playing baseball. Olaf Mathijssen and Bas Boone were also credits to both youth and Belgians. Daniel Stuut was added via a trade with the Dutch, and while we couldn't quite shake "Depressed Daniel"'s gloomy behavior, he was able to win 20 games between Brussels and Amsterdam. The rotation looks pretty secure barring a trade. Then again, the Brussels Painters do not bar trades.

Here in the Low Countries, we do not look upon weaknesses as "weaknesses" but rather "trading opportunities." We have a great trading opportunity at first base, for example. Marc Dias is not completely horrendous but he's merely adequate. The team could be incrementally improved by replacing him. Likewise, left and right field both have pretty okay people who took most of the at-bats last year, but pretty okay is not going to bring World Series championships to Belgium. On the other hand, Lucas Holdjik is a great player and will not be moved unless we get a really, really good offer for him.

Chicago Defenders

Overview

The resiliency of this Chicago Defenders team is overwhelming. Picked by many of the top white sportswriters to never be worth anything based on little more than the color of our skin, the Defenders did not just cream their US rivals (33-21 in 1920 against Cincinnati, New York, and the US Army), they proved they were the cream of the crop in the America/Asia league. In fact, we welcome the attempt by our in-country rivals to set up a new division that includes only teams based within our borders. It will just mean an automatic seed in the playoffs for us. At least until the other 3 teams figure out a way to exclude us again.

Look, we don't mean to sound arrogant. Jack Johnson has already proven that blacks can compete with whites on the athletic field; why would it be strange at all, then that the best athletes black America has to offer can outplay the best white athletes who weren't quite talented enough to join the Baseball Brigade?

Pitching

The pitching wasn't the greatest out there, but it was good enough to at least get the Defenders to the World Series. Once there, the Revolution provided a real learning experience for the rotation: namely, that you cannot let up, ever. It was a tough lesson, but we believe that the old adage that you cannot teach old dogs new tricks is just plain wrong. We hope so, at least. The only Chicago Defender under the age of 30 and projected to be in the rotation is Jon Carlton.

But enough about what can't be. Juan Zorros placed among the league leaders in fewest walks per 9 innings. Nobody on the Defenders pitched to contact better than he did. Daryl "Cats" Evans was the most overpowering man on the roster until the playoffs. Pedro Ruiz also contributed. Nate Frost played primarily because we couldn't find anybody better.

Batting

The hitting was where the Defenders really showed their mettle. 900 runs scored is a... lot of runs. You have to go back to the 19th century to find an American baseball team that scored that much (and the French, but... oh, be quiet). The offense was so deep that the team actually traded middle-of-the-lineup man Edgar Diaz in midseason for youth. This happened right exactly before the team vaulted itself into contention and was bemoaned within the Windy City as a "white flag" trade. It didn't help that his supposed replacement, Vaughn Wolf, went down and out with a really nasty knee injury right after Diaz left. Happily, Randy Edwards did even better than Wolf and will give the Defenders a real dilemma for the 1920 season.

On the other hand, the infield needs some work. Edward Bowles was great but he's getting up there in years. Shortstop was a mess and everybody else was just adequate.

Cincinnati Red

Overview

The Reds gained ground on the rest of the league, increasing their victory total from 68 to 79 and also leaping up two places in the standings. We knew it was going to be hard to get Americans behind baseball again, and it's still going to take some time. It doesn't help that Cincinnati is by far the smallest city in the League of Nations; sometimes we think that we were only given a team to keep a link with the world's first professional base ball team (because we are fond of history, we won't mention that that really should have been the Boston Braves).

The Reds are getting where they're getting due to residual baseball knowledge. Nobody in baseball gave up fewer homeruns than did the Reds because the pitchers have an instrinsic knowledge of how to pitch around the corners. Conversely, we were #1 in the A/A in homeruns *hit* because we know how to take advantage of similar situations. See? Whatever we do is smart, by definition.

There's not much that can be said about Cincinnati that hasn't already been said. These guys are just plain smart. We're talking a bunch of geniuses here. Whem Jerry Spencer quits baseball he'll probably cure cancer or at least the influenza virus. Brian Matthews is perhaps more cagey than smart but he knows the Ruy Lopez openining if you know what I mean. Woody Griffin is so named because he has found over 6,000 uses for wood. I'm not a big fan of his wood shampoo or his wood butter but it's the idea-making that's important here.

Pure, unbridled smarts do not, apparently, translate into hitting success at the League of Nations level. Well, things were decent, but in order to truly contend the Reds will have to work a bit harder with the old noggin. The men who donned the "tools of ignorance" were, fittingly, especially hurtful to the team's chances last year. Neither Ralph Forcier nor Arnie Russell were particularly good at holding runners at bay, and the pitchers were mostly calling their own pitches, so it's hard to ascertain what the catching position did do for this team. Elsewhere, Jeff Cochran was lights-out as a 22-year-old slugger who can play all three outfield positions. He may not quite have the range for center field (at least not yet) but he's bound to start somewhere.
