Vienna and Paris are simply the class of the league, there is no doubt about it. However, Brussels, Amsterdam, and (surprisingly enough) Moscow know that once you get into October anything can happen. A secondary story to who is contending is who is not. The biggest surprise so far are the London Monarchs, who are currently trying to make do without their #1, 2, and 3 starters. The good news is that their #3 man Bradley Weld (5-5, 3.61) should be back within the week. He's not an ace by any means, sporting a career record of 38 wins and 36 losses, but he should be a damn sight better the men currently in the rotation. The Monarchs have already pulled the trigger on a couple desperation trades, bringing in 34-year-old Aussie Patrick Harwood (16-12 last year with Sydney but so far 0-4 with a 9.19 ERA with the Monarchs) and former Big Six Award winner Yvon Calzolai from the Rome Cardinals (8-9, 4.07 overall and 0-2, 6.35 with London). Unfortunately they still haven't been able to make up any ground and it's only the known grit qualities of the English that are keeping us from counting them completely out at this point. Chasing .400 - A 1921 Watch Several men are pursuing the .400 mark. Nobody came close last year but with averages on a general upswing this looks like it could be the year. Here's a brief profile of the ballplayers in question: 1B Gary Lemaitre, Brussels (.423) - Lemaitre isn't just pushing the barrier, he's threatening to blow it apart. Lemaitre is one of 13 players to play in all 73 games for his team so far and as such is on pace to rap out 273 hits. The record is 235 by Aurochs Eckhardt. 2B Luis Vargas, Mexico City (.409) - Vargas played in just 14 games last year, missing nearly all of the season with a badly broken ankle. Because it happened so early in the year, it wasn't widely reported as a reason why the Aztecs didn't get further into the playoffs, but it was probably as big a factor as anything else. Well, he's back. Critics say that pretty much his entire value is wrapped up in his batting average, but when you hit like Vargas does, that's not really a criticism. C Laurent Garnier, Paris (.408) - We're considering coming up with a new statistic to measure a catcher's worth to his club called Catcher's Number. It's the sum total of his batting average and runner thrown out percentage. Right now, Garnier's Catcher Number is almost .900 thanks to the batting average and a 47.5 RTO%, which would surely be a record. What the heck, it's our statistic. It would be a record if he could keep this up. 3B John Baird, New York (.399) - Baird has increased his average in each of the 3 years he's been in the league. The previous 2 seasons he hit .316 and .320 so it's only natural that he'd be up among the .400 chasers, right? If he keeps it up, he could be in double figures in doubles, triples, and homeruns, and in triple digits in runs and RBIs. He's only off the pace in the runs category. C Claude Goncalves, Amsterdam (.397) - How loaded is Paris' "Reign of Terror" lineup? Goncalves is French. He was traded to Amsterdam to shore up the pitching staff. We'd say the Revolution would love to get this guy back, but where would he play? Anyway, he's thumping the ball at a very consistent pace this year (.415 in April, .392 in May, .390 in June) and is the meat of the Admirals' lineup. 1B Tim Kinch, Royal Canadians (.395) - Kinch demonstrated just how hard it is to maintain a .400 average. He hit "just" .347 last month, bringing his BA down from the .420s to where it is now. This is still a man capable of a .471 month, so don't be surprised if he moves up on this list. SP Florian Knaus, Vienna (15-1, 2.23) - Okay, so Knaus isn't going to hit .400 this year, but he is on pace to best an equally challenging mark: 30 victories. Knaus won his first 14 starts of the season before dropping a 5-2 decision to the Revolution on June 23rd. He has failed to go 9 innings just one time this season and has yet to give up his first home run. Knaus is the kind of guy who just gets tougher when the game is on the line: his opponent batting numbers of 256/284/320 drop to 236/274/292 from the 7th inning on.

Events: July, 1921
July 1: The USA officially ends its war with Germany.
July 2: Ivanoe Bonomi takes over as Prime Minister of Italy and therefore GM of the Rome Cardinals. July 17: The first baseball game is broadcast over the radio. Harold Arlin announces the matchup between the New York Giants and Mexico City Aztecs. Due to the vagaries of the Tesla Device, the game, which is broadcast live, doesn't air until August 5. July 20: Is it hot in here or is it just me? Breslau's temperature hits 39 degrees Celsius, which by my calculations is really hot. July 28: Inflation riots occur in Munich, and elsewhere in Germany the man they sent to broker the Treaty of Versailles, Mattias Erzberger, is killed.

Iwasaki, known to Japanese fans as the Divine Wind, missed a year's worth of service between 1919 and 1920 with bone chips in his elbow but, now that he's healthy, ranks among the league leaders in innings pitched (#1, 207), ERA (#2, 2.52), wins (#3, 15), and strikeouts (#2, 83). Amazingly, they've been getting it done without the services of RF 'Super' Hiro Sato, whose been gone since the end of June with a sprained elbow and who has played in just 18 games for Tokyo overall. Mexico City's own pitching staff, of course, is nothing to sneeze at. They led the league in ERA last year and are a close second this year with a 3.62 mark. Manuel Figueroa is the Aztecs' stopper, and he's certainly lived up to the role. He's 18-3 and has rattled off two separate 8-game winning streaks (he's still working on the second one). On the hitting side of the ledger, 2B Luis Vargas is one of a handful of players chasing .400 (he's at .396). LF Edgar Diaz is not far off that mark (.382). Center field has been a problem for them all season long, but looks to not be now that they've zipped off a trade with the Madrid Matadors for Felix Hernandez. Hernandez isn't much with the bat but has a tremendous glove, which should only help that monstrous Aztecs pitching staff. If it looks like Moscow has risen from the dead, that's because they have. Several players came off of war suspension earlier this season to push the Soviet into wild card contention. Chief among these is LF Yury Pahmutov, now hitting .410 with 11 home runs in just 234 at-bats. If he doesn't win the MVP this year, it'll be because of injury or voter blindness. Joseph "The Red" Vranitsky, who famously defected from Austria in 1919, is another man the Proletariat has added thanks to relative peacefulness within the Russian borders. His 8-6 record belies the success he's had this season, striking out 97 men in 119.2 innings. Another useful cog added via other means is 3B Eustace Winschermann, acquired from Berlin in the reparations draft. He's hitting a solid .298 and has stabilized a position that was a huge mess for the team last year. Amsterdam's another Cinderella story made possible in part by the falls from grace by London and Berlin. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what the Admirals are doing to slip into the 4th playoff spot right now. They are 2nd in the EU in hitting with a .307 average but their run production doesn't really add up to that. SS Haico Westerhout, the darling of so many baseball mavens last year with his speed and gritty play, is just another guy this year, although his 33 steals are still good enough for 2nd in the continent. The pitching has been just so-so, with excellent performances by Robert Bax (11-4, 2.85) and Dobbe Arden (10-6, 3.24) just barely outdoing season-long slumps by Vasil Bouwman (9-8, 4.79) and Yannick Rikxoort (5-9, 5.81). And then there's Brussels, who last year just missed getting into the playoffs in their first season in the league. The Painters have learned from their mistakes and, more importantly, have a healthy 1B Gary Lemaitre to rally around. Lemaitre has blown away the league this season to the tune of a .411 average, 11 homeruns, 70 RBIs, 65 runs, and an on-base percentage of .489. It's hard not to score runs with a guy like that in your lineup. He's accompanied in superstardom by SP Onne Van den Akker, who hasn't been quite as flashy as Austria's Florian Knaus (now 19-2) or Paris' Hendri Arents (13-0 in 12 starts; how is that even possible?), but is still mowing down opponents with 16 wins against 6 losses, a sub-3.00 ERA in a 4.25 ERA world, and 15 complete games. One secret for his success is that hitters never know when to stand in and when to bail out when van den Akker is on the mound: his 7 hit batsmen lead the team.

End of Season - 1921
Editor's Note: I got BANED in the middle of writing this dynasty (note to self: when dispensing advice about the sorts of discussions one should engage in on a board dedicated to micromanagement-intensive sports sims, please take your own advice), so there's a bunch of stuff I wrote about it that will probably not appear on this board. Much of it was rewriting of old Sporting News articles and I expect to do more of that in the future, so you probably won't miss much. Anyway, here is a big gigantic end of season stat dump. I am happy to report that this took me like a half hour to format rather than the HOURS it seemed to take in the past. The trick is to get the HTML files into Excel, then save your spreadsheet as a .prn file, which is space delimited. You'll still have to play with the columns a bit but it's a lot easier than doing all the formatting by hand in Notepad.
