A couple of extra points to the above.
  • You can actually use the foreign player limit differently. My understanding how it works is as per the following table (the first 3 columns are the settings, the next three columns are the results) -
Foreign Players LimitForeign Pitcher LimitForeign Hitter Limit
Max Total ForeignersMax Foreign PitchersMax Foreign Hitters
101010
201010
1087
1587
1010No Limit
101010
10No Limit10
101010
10No Limit6
10106
106No Limit
10610

I've never actually played a game with the settings as per the bottom 4, so I don't know how smart the AI is at using up it's quota. I would hope that each team would have different numbers of foreign hitters and pitchers, but I think there is a chance that every team in the league will simply have 10 foreign pitchers and no hitters (or vice versa).
  • I've created a quickstart of the EBL with new fictional players and all the unis, logos. If anyone is interested, send me a private message with your Email address and I'll send it along.

I hijacked name set 37 (Pakistani) so if your world has lots of Pakistanis, you might want to do something different.

My entry in the ethnicities.txt file for set 37 looks like -

37,Hungarian,0,0,0,1000,0,

I changed the nations.txt entry for Hungary to -

88,Hungary,Hungary,HUN,Hungarian,3,2,37,100,0,0,0, 0,0,0,0,0,1000,0,0

The name files are attached.

1983 Preview

March 30th 1983 - Another off-season without much free-agency movement promises to lead to a season where the teams that were good last year are good this year. We did think that before the 1982 season as well though and most of the 1981 playoff teams had a poor season.

A few teams have made some aggresive trade moves. Copenhagen made a trade for reigning WL Glove of the Year for Right Field, Vitaly Woevedin. He is a career .284 hitter and is 35 years old, but he should make the team better for this season. They also brought in 1982's AAA Hitter of the Year, Antosha Litvintsev, who becomes their best (and youngest) first baseman.

There was also one huge other trade, with 2 men who were drafted in the top 10 of 1981's inaugural draft swapping teams. The Oslo Metros sent Bernard Wulker (#8 overall, average year .322/10/72) and relief pitcher Vavrinec Puskar to Prague in return for Ian Meoni (#2 overall, average year .289/22/87) and a minor league shortstop with no chance of making the EBL.

Magnus Leeuwenburgh (Vienna) and Eskil Junge (London) have both returned to the EBL after long term injuries, but as both are over 35, it is probably the case that they will not be the same as they were before their time out.

Zurich 34 41 11 Sofia 23 52 24
Notes -

The three teams mentioned in the preview as having made major trades (and Dublin who we failed to mention) are all having good years.
Zurich and Lisbon were involved in the EBLs second ever 20 inning game on 7th April. Zurich won 12-11, meaning they have been involved and won both EBL games that have gone that distance.
Sofia started 2-18. They fired their GM and skipper in May.
Oslo beat Moscow 5-3 on 19th May, a game remarkable because each team committed the same number of errors as they scored runs. Moscow followed this up by committing 5 errors the next day.
Budapest had a 6-18 run in May. Copenhagen had a 16-5 run and Prague won 18 out of 24.

Player Notes -

In the 20 inning game, Lisbon RF Dylan Rosenburg was 4/5 with 2 HR, 6 RBI and 5 walks.
Brussels players Theo Brittain, Jorge Perez and Fabio Quinhones all hit 2 home runs as the Hitmen beat Amsterdam 22-11 on 10th April. Perez was later named the WL Hitter of the Month for April, he hit .379 with 5 home runs and 23 RBIs.
Ebbe de Bie (Prague) became the first relief pitcher to win a Pitcher of the Month award, by winning the EL award in April. He saved 12 games in the month and had a 1.02 ERA.
The other April award winners were Paulo Simon (Athens, EL Hitter) and Magnus Leeuwenburgh (Vienna, WL Pitcher), who returned from injury with a 5-0 month.
Claudio Lwenholm (Amsterdam) hit in every game he played in May, finishing with a 31 game hitting streak. He hit .424 for the month of May and was named as the WL Hitter of the Month.
Prague CF Josef Metternech hit 3 HR versus Oslo on 15th May. 2 weeks later Randy Schmidt (Hamburg) hit the first cycle of the season.
May's Pitchers of the Month were - WL: Odysseus Hristopolous (Zurich), EL: Alexis Martin (Copenhagen).
Ian Meoni (Oslo) had a great May for his new club. He hit .400 and was named EL Hitter of the Month.
Dublin SP Jere Ronkko (who they got in return for Vitaly Woevodin in the pre-season trade) is 10-1 at the All-Star break with a 3.44 ERA.

Significant Injuries -

Vienna SP Joseph Sykora will miss the whole of the 1983 season with bone chips. Last season he was 15-10 with a 3.47 ERA.
Two time reigning WL Pitcher of the Year, Nike Rousakis (Milan), missed 3 weeks in May with a strained rotator cuff.
Dolf Pellenaars (Hamburg) was injured just before the All-Star break and will miss the rest of the year. He is a career .305 hitter and will definitely be missed.

Hitmen Trade Brittain

July 20th 1983 - In a move that has shocked the EBL, the Brussels Hitmen have traded away Theo Brittain less than a year after he was a big part of them winning the European League Series.

The Irish Left Fielder was Brussels' 1st pick (at #11 overall) in the EBL Inaugural Draft and had been consistently their best hitter. He has a career average of .312 with 81 HRs and 295 RBI in the nearly three seasons of EBL play, putting him in the top 5 career-wise of the HR and RBI categories. He was also very good in their 1982 playoff run, with 20 hits, 6 of which were homers, in their 19 playoff games.

With a record such as his, you might expect the Hitmen's return in the trade to be bountiful - it was anything but. They received in return from the Barcelona Iguanas relief pitcher Marco Baan, whose career ERA of 3.60 and WHIP of 1.23 in 240 innings are good but not spectacular, and that was all they got.

Many rumours have been swirling as to why the Hitmen made the deal, ranging from them being scared of how much Brittain would cost them in arbitration in years to come, to them simply overvaluing Baan because he is Belgian and hence doesn't count against their foreigner limit. The most prevalent rumour being that Brittain's face simply didn't fit and they were glad to be rid of him.

Slightly less astonishing, but equally newsworthy, is another trade that recently took place. Lisbon have traded 1981's WL Hitter of the Year Zosimo Patrianakos to the Budapest Smoke in return for starting pitcher Admes Tzannetakis. Patrianakos couldn't repeat his 1981 efforts last year, and had seen his playing time severely reduced this season, with only 104 at-bats before the trade. Tzannetakis is a servicable EBL starter but has an overall losing record and a career ERA of 4.76.

Madrid 69 93 31 Sofia 61 101 26
Notes -

Stockholm had a 20-8 run to pull close in their division.
Budapest fired their manager in September, when they were 59-86.
Helsinki scored 11 runs in an inning in a 14-3 win over Athens.
Brussels lost 14 out of 17 to drop out of contention.
The WL Divisions were tied up early, but the Wildcard race was tight. Barcelona had a 10-1 run in September, while Dublin lost 8 in a row and London lost 9 in a row. During this run Barcelona beat Dublin 17-6 by scoring 10 times in the 9th inning. London lost in extra innings to Glasgow on the last day of the season to hand the Wildcard spots to the Iguanas and the Wolfpack.
The EL was pretty much all knotted up through all of August and September. Hamburg snuck up on the rails with a 15-3 finish to overtake Moscow, Athens and Prague, but the other teams involved were always within a couple of games of each other. Moscow lost 6-5 in 11 innings on the last day against Berlin to miss out on the playoffs.
There was a marked difference in the leagues with the WL having an ERA of 4.24 and the EL 3.83.

Player Notes -

Jan Heinonen (London) struck out 16 in a 2-1 win over Glasgow on 13th July.
Jonas Solvik hit a walk off Grand Slam in Amsterdam's 5-3 win over Paris on 14th July.
Max Sabin (Milan) was the WL Hitter of the Month for June and July. August's winner was Claudio Lwenholm (Amsterdam). The other 9 awards for the second half of the season were won by 9 different players. Bernd Vonschroeder (Budapest), Paulo Simon (Athens) and Pantalian Lobeiro (Helsinki) won the EL Hitter award. The successful pitchers were - Fillipio Nota (Milan), Jere Ronkko (Dublin), Emanuel Biancardi (Amsterdam), Klement Follerup (Moscow), Robert Wood (Stockholm) and Alexis Martin (Copenhagen).
Barcelona's Theo Brittain hit .274 with 8 home runs in 62 games for his new club and added some impetus to their race into the playoffs.
London Closer Phillip Haaland saved 49 opportunities in a row (dating back to 1982).

Significant Injuries-

1982's EL Hitter of the Year, Kyle MacKillop (Prague), has retired from the game after rupuring a disc. He is only 29. He was not having quite as good a year this year, but he was one of Prague's best players still.
'Pop' Annoni (Athens) missed all of July. He was hitting .266 with 12 homers and 36 RBIS at the time.
Brussels CF Jorge Perez missed 2 months with a torn groin. He was hitting .336 before the injury. The Hitmen also lost 2B Anatolio Jovine, who fractured an ankle and might not be ready for the start of next season.

Baseball To Have European Championship

February 15th 1984 - Whilst EBL franchises are busy building towards the new season, the league offices have announced that they will bring together the national teams of Europe for a tournament to decide which nation is the champion of the continent.

The tournament is scheduled to take place every 4 years. This year's tournament will put the 22 nations into 2 groups of 11 with each team playing the others in their group 4 times, with the top 2 moving on to the knockout stages.

The draw for the 1984 tournament has taken place and the groups are as follows -

Code:
Group A Group B

Germany Denmark
Poland Scotland
Sweden Greece
England Belgium
Czech Republic Ireland
Portugal Italy
Finland Norway
Spain Hungary
Bulgaria Switzerland
France Netherlands
Austria Russia

1984 Preview

March 31st 1984 - Again there was not a lot of player movement in the off-season. Some teams have started sigining long term contracts with their star players, rather than let them go through arbitration.

Milan look to be the class of the league again after 204 wins in two seasons, but Amsterdam looked good last year and they have added former Rookie of the Year, Bernd Vonschroeder, who hit 25 home runs last year.

Stockholm will miss Robert 'Razor' Wood for the first half of the season. The 1981 and 1983 EL Pitcher of the Year and the EBL's current all-time leader in wins has a badly scolded pitching hand from a domestic accident.

Athens scored 10 runs in the 1st against Budapest to win 14-9. All 10 runs came with 2 outs.
Zurich won 12 out of 15 in May to pull closer to Barcelona.
Reigning champs Milan have their 4th and 5th starters and a lack of run production from their line-up (except Max Sabin) to thank for their under .500 record.

Player Notes -

Jose Alonso (Barcelona) hit 2 doubles in the 10th inning to take the Iguanas to a 9-2 win over Paris on 28th April.
There have been two one-hitters in the first half of the season. One by Hamburg's Janos Racz and one by Oslo's Bart Taft.
Callum Maxwell (Stockholm) won the EL triple crown in April with a .409 average, 9 homers and 24 RBIs. He won the Hitter of the Month Award. The WL's winner was Scott Ashwell (Paris).
Warsaw reliever Emmett O'Neill won the April EL Pitcher of the Month award thanks to 7 wins. (He currently leads the league with 12 wins). The WL winner was Adrastos Demarchis (Dublin).
Pantalian Lobeiro (Helsinki) hit for the cycle and got 8 RBIs versus Budapest on 7th May.
Kai Hofer (Zurich) was 6 for 6 in an 18-7 win over London on 15th May.
Lisbon's Ignacio Rosado had 2 home runs in back-to-back games against Brussels in mid-May.

EL Pitcher: Janos Racz (Hamburg) - 6-0/1.99

Jakob Pedersen (Athens) scored 6 runs in a 19-5 win over Moscow on 12th June.

Significant Injuries -

1983's WL Rookie of the Year, Pablo Hernandez (Glasgow) missed the first 9 weeks of the season with a fractured wrist.
Marcello Pierdomenico (Milan) was hitting .500 over the first 2 weeks of the season, but then he fractured his foot and missed the next 7 weeks.
20 year old starter Jeirgif Izvekov (Budapest) tore his rotator cuff in April and won't be back until a fortnight after the All-Star break.
Phillip Haaland (London), who has 92 career saves, injured his back in May and will have missed 6 weeks by the time he returns.
Moscow's best starting pitcher, Gaspar Kertesz, is out for 8 months with a herniated disc. He has a career ERA of 2.38 in 42 starts.

Sabin To Miss Euros

July 16th 1984 - Milan's reigning WL Hitter of the Year and European League Series MVP, Max Sabin, left today's game against Zurich with a back injury and the team doctors have confirmed that he will be out until the start of next year.

His injury will mean that he will also not be available for England in the upcoming European Championship. He would likely have been the first name on the team list for the Englishmen, but his torn muscle is going to take more than 6 months to fully heal.

He was having another superb season, hitting .364 with 24 home runs and 86 RBIs and is the EBLs all time leader in RBIs (as well as being 3rd overall in OPS).

I had my own European League on these boards back in the 6.5 days of OOTP, and with no roster nation files I can tell you that was hairy sometimes. Still very fun, and I hope you have as much fun as I did with this one.
I'm guessing you're going to copy the file and use a second one for the Nations Championship right?

Right! I'm going get to the end of the 84 season, then use a copy to do the national championship.

I'm thinking I can let the AI pick the teams without any input from me, but then again picking the 22 squads might be something fun to do.

Notes -

Paris and Moscow both fell away gradually over the second half of the season.
Oslo and Helsinki played 14 scoreless innings on 26th July. Helsinki won 2-1 in 15.
London scored 11 in an inning in a 13-5 win against Paris on 22nd August. The Cyclones got their revenge the next day, when they scored 8 times in the 13th inning to win.
For much of the second half of the season the 4 WL playoff spots looked to be going to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Zurich and Milan. Things got interesting in late August as Glasgow went on a 14-5 run to pull into the race. Later in August (and into September), Barcelona lost 11 games in a row and Brussels won 16 of 19 and the race came down to the last day. The Iguanas lost 7-5 to London in their final game to miss out.
Copenhagen won on the last day to clinch their division and Hamburg lost the same day to miss out on the final Wildcard spot.

Player Notes -

Max Sabin (Milan) won the WL Hitter of the Month for June trophy before his injury. Callum Maxwell (Stockholm) won the EL award.
Jesus Ruiz
(Brussels) and Bart Taft (Oslo) won the June pitching awards. They also both won the same awards in August.
'Pop' Annoni (Athens) hit a 10th inning Grand Slam in a 6-0 win against Budapest.
The July awards went to -

WL Hitter: Claudio Lwenholm (Amsterdam) - .382/7/20
EL Hitter: Thomas Meinert (Copenhagen) - .402/10/34
WL Pitcher: Joseph Bell (Glasgow) - 4-1/0.77
EL Pitcher: Jeirgif Izvekov (Budapest) - 5-0/1.29

Paulo Simon (Athens) hit for the cycle against Berlin on 29th August and was subsequently named the EL's Hitter of the Month. London's Eskil 'Mr Reliable' Junge won the WL award.
Antonio Rodriguez (Madrid) threw a no-hitter against Paris on 5th September in a 6-0 win. Two days later his team-mate, Milos Vostatkova, hit 3 homers in a 7-6 loss to Zurich. He only had 5 home runs before that game.

Significant Injuries -

Sabin as mentioned previously.
Holly Connich (Warsaw) was hitting .372 with 12 home runs before missing 2 months with a fractured ankle.
Timon Panayi (Berlin) missed 8 weeks with a broken arm. He was hitting .277 with 10 home runs at the time.
Milan's Nenad Jevtic missed 6 weeks with a strained ligament in his pitching elbow. His record stood at 8-7 with an ERA of 2.33.
Aetos Zikos (Berlin) is going to be out for nearly a year with a tricep injury. His ERA of 2.81, was not necessarily reflected in his 12-13 record. He was a probable squad member for Greece in the European Championship.
