1986 Preview
March 31st 1986 - Another EBL season is upon us. The madness of wholesale free-agency has still not yet taken hold in the EBL, so trades were the only way teams could look to improve themselves. Not wanting to stand still the reigning champion Dublin Wolfpack traded away C Eric Molinier to division rivals Brussels for RP Harry MacBrayne. Another North Sea Division team, the Amsterdam Selects, also made an interesting trade, acquiring Jordan Barnstaple from Prague. He is a career .294 hitter, with 324 RBI (although not a lot of power). Other than that there really wasn't a lot of movement, it would seem that most franchises are happy with the way they are progressing. |

1986 All-Star Break
June 22nd 1986 - A half-season of attrition to start 1986 with injuries galore and marathon games. Code:
WL North Sea EL Baltic
W L GB W L GB
Brussels 43 32 - Copenhagen 45 30 -
Amsterdam 41 34 2 Hamburg 44 31 1
Paris 40 35 3 Berlin 41 34 4
Dublin 36 39 7 Oslo 36 39 9
Glasgow 31 44 12 Helsinki 35 40 10
London 24 51 19 Stockholm 34 41 11
WL Meditteranean EL Black Sea
W L GB W L GB
Vienna 45 30 - Prague 45 30 -
Milan 44 31 1 Moscow 39 36 6
Zurich 43 32 2 Warsaw 36 39 9
Barcelona 39 36 6 Athens 33 42 12
Madrid 36 39 9 Budapest 31 44 14
Lisbon 28 47 17 Sofia 31 44 14
The Stockholm Lumberjacks were the surprise of the first few weeks, getting off to a 10-3 start. They have reverted to normal behaviour since. Paris also made a good start, winning 19 games in April, whereas London could only manage 7 wins. Budapest played 3 games of 16 innings or longer in the first 5 weeks of the season, losing all 3. One of them broke the record for the longest game in EBL history - a 7-5 loss to Athens in 21 innings. The game lasted 11 minutes shy of 6 hours and three different players had 0/8 days. Entering the 9th down 2-1 to the Zurich Jesters, the Brussels Hitmen proceeded to score 6 runs. Unfortunately they also managed to allow 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th and went on to lose 9-7 in 11 innings. London scored 11 runs in an inning on April 12th to beat Lisbon 17-3. Amsterdam piled up 16 runs in the first 3 innings of a 19-0 win against London on April 30th. An odd thing happened on May 23rd, when of the 12 games played, 9 of them had one of the teams scoring exactly 3 runs. Sofia only managed 7 wins in the whole of May, they have actually had a decent June, but are too far back now. The new record for longest ever EBL game lasted just over a month. On June 8th Vienna and Barcelona played a gamed that went to 22 innings, lasting 7 hours and 18 minutes and finishing after 2am. The teams combined for 41 hits and 45 men left on base as Vienna won 10-7. The Armageddon's Lorenzo Boldrini was glad the game finally finished, as he failed to get a hit in 10 at-bats. Vienna are 13-5 so far in June to overtake the Milan Mud Cats. The reigning champions, Dublin, are struggling slightly on the offensive end. They had a key injury (see below) and outside of their top 3, the rest of the lineup are underperforming. Player Notes - Nenad Jevtic (Milan) no-hit Barcelona on opening day, winning 2-0. Alexis Martin (Copenhagen) pitched a 1-hitter in a 6-0 win against Prague on April 11th. His team-mate Rudolf Tuhina hit 3 home runs on April 22nd to lead the Armada to a 10-4 win over Moscow. Tuhina was later named as EL Hitter of the Month for May. The Hitters of the Month for April were Kristof Kis (Amsterdam) and Callum Maxwell (Stockholm). The Pitchers of the Month were Aidan Fletcher (Paris) and Roth Fruehwirt (Prague). Rookies made an impact on May 14th. Hamburg's Samuel Polach hit 3 home runs and scored 5 runs in his teams 17-4 demolition of Copenhagen. Then Armin Polster (Vienna) threw a 1-hitter, shutting out Dublin 4-0. Copenhagen got revenge against Hamburg the next day as Vladimir Erantsev hit a walk-off 2-out Grand Slam. Madrid 3B Daniel Keurost put up the best hitting performance of the first half. He was 6/6 with 2 HR, 7 RBI and 4 runs scored in an 11-10 win against Dublin on May 28th. His 6th hit was a 3 run homer with 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th to win the game. Theo Brittain hit 13 home runs in May to walk away with the WL Hitter of the Month Award. The May Pitchers of the Month were Jesus Ruiz (Brussels) and Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin). Another rookie to make an impact was 1985's #1 draft pick Pasqualino Terragni who made his EBL debut for Lisbon on June 1st and threw 8 innings of 5 hit ball against Paris. Significant Injuries - Hamburg's Ned 'Blanks' Zijm has had to retire with an elbow injury. He was a two-time All-Star and was only 25 years old. His career record of 45-27 with a 2.99 ERA promised to get better, but now we will never know. He was in the first year of a 3-year $8.5M deal. Hamburg will also be without bullpen ace Jim Boogermans for the rest of the season with a ruptured disc suffered on April 15th. Sofia's star 1B Francis Gautier missed 4 weeks ealry in the season with an eye injury. Eric Molinier (Brussels), who only joined the club in the past offseason in a trade, is out for more than a year with a torn abdominal muscle. He was hitting .283 before going down. The Hitmen also lost SS Nicolas Turpin for the season a week later. He was hitting .333. Dublin also had two significant injuries, but both players were back to full health before the All-Star break. The injured duo were SP Erik Paulsen and 1B Igoryok Vishipanov. London's Gerd Buchert, who won 20 games back in 1981, is out for the season with a back injury suffered on May 8th. On the same day Aetos 'Frisky' Zikos (Berlin) also went down for the year with a bad back, he is a career 62 game winner. |

1986 Final Standings
September 26th 1986 - A quieter second half of the season, but nevertheless some EBL records broken and set. Code:
WL North Sea EL Baltic
W L GB W L GB
Brussels 92 70 - Copenhagen 106 56 -
Amsterdam 88 74 4 Berlin 93 69 13
Paris 81 81 11 Hamburg 92 70 14
Dublin 75 87 17 Oslo 82 80 24
Glasgow 73 89 19 Helsinki 76 86 30
London 60 102 32 Stockholm 71 91 35
WL Meditteranean EL Black Sea
W L GB W L GB
Milan 97 65 - Prague 89 73 -
Vienna 95 67 2 Moscow 82 80 7
Zurich 92 70 5 Warsaw 79 83 10

Lisbon 72 90 25 Sofia 66 96 23
Madrid 68 94 29 Budapest 63 99 26
Brussels got off to a quick start after the break. They scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat Madrid 8-7 on June 29th. They had a 15-3 run in July to pull away in their division. Berlin won 9 games in a row in July to take control of the Wildcard race. The worst got worse as Budapest had a 3-14 streak and London won only 1 of their first 15 games in July. Milan scored 10 in an inning to beat Glasgow 14-4, then just over a month later against the same team scored an EBL record 15 in an inning in a 21-7 win. In the big inning, Max Sabin was 2/2 with a walk. Amazingly Vienna were involved in their second 22 inning game of the season as they lost 5-4 to London on September 8th. No real tight races for playoff spots. Amsterdam had a chance to pass Brussels, but lost 2 of 3 at home to the Hitmen in the penultimate series of the season. These losses also erased any chance they had at a Wildcard spot. Player Notes - June's Players of the Month were - WL Hitter: Sander Klaeboe (Zurich) - .349/6/25 EL Hitter: Holly Connich (Warsaw) - .414/4/19 WL Pitcher: Pierangelo Magherini (Zurich) - 5-0/3.09 EL Pitcher: Alexis Martin (Copenhagen) - 4-0/1.72 Brussels acquired some pitching help in deadline day trades. They added SP Hampus Assar from Madrid and RP Vasilii Lelyuk from Prague. They did have to give up CF Fabio Quinhones to get Lelyuk. Mojslaw Szasz (Helsinki) set a new EBL record for consecutive save opportunites converted. Covering 1985 and 1986 he saved 64 opportunities in a row, with the streak finally ending in the last few weeks of the season. Dublin's Erik Paulsen threw a 2-hitter against Milan on July 30th. There were three other 2-hitters over the rest of the season and one no-hitter. The two hitters were thrown by Alois Maloney (Amsterdam), Alexis Martin (Copenhagen) and Athens rookie Axel Rosengren. The no-hitter went to Martin's team-mate Jens Fetterlein. Rookie Samuel Polach (Hamburg) was the EL's Hitter of the Month for both July and August. He hit 20 home runs in the two month stretch. Three pitchers threw complete game shutouts on August 10th - Janos Racz (Hamburg), Sindre Grondalen (Madrid) and Jakob Kjeldsen (Barcelona). The Pitchers of the Month for July were Paris rookie Ralph Neubert (WL) and Athens reliever Thanos Karoki (EL). Neubert's month formed part of a 20 game unbeaten streak that lasted until his final start of the season. He finished 1986 with a 12-3 record and a 3.02 ERA. Philippe Martin (Milan) was the WL's Hitter of the Month for July and he finished the season as the first ever man to take the Triple Crown in the EBL. His season average was .351 and he hit an EBL record 48 home runs, batting in 156 runs. 1981's European League Series MVP, Lorenzo Gutierrez, won the WL Hitter of the Month award in August by hitting 12 HR in the month. The Pitchers of the final full month of the season were Alexander Schrimpf (Paris) and Botol Burnay (Helsinki). Significant Injuries - The Chinese Polishman, Cheung Ying (Brussels), has a pinched nerve and will miss 12 months. He was at .305 with 18 home runs on July 8th when it happened. Barcelona's Marcos Gonzales missed the last month of the season with a back injury. He finished at .252 with 24 homers. Zurich's multiple batting champ, Ony Proskurnya, will miss the playoffs after fracturing an eye socket. He hit .318 on the year. |

1987 Preview
March 31st 1987 - The first year of free-agency was always going to be a bit of a free-for-all. Basically any player who has been in the EBL since it's inception was a free agent after the 1986 season, unless they had already signed an extension with their club. With teams and players not really sure of market value, not a lot of extensions had been signed, meaning that a large proportion of the league's star names were available in free agency in the off-season. The following list is OSA's top 10 rated free agents along with a few others who got big new deals - Code:
Player (age) -- Old Team -- New Team -- Contract C Antti-Jussi Meresmaa (33) -- Amsterdam -- Hamburg -- 3 years, $16.7M CF Theo Brittain (32) -- Barcelona -- Vienna -- 2 years, $11.2M 1B Francis Gautier (31) -- Sofia -- Sofia -- 5 years, $25.7M 1B Lukas Stoger (30) -- Zurich -- Paris -- 5 years, $25.4M 1B Lorenzo Gutierrez (28) -- Vienna -- Brussels -- 5 years, $26.0M CF Jacquy Gilbert (30) -- Hamburg -- Sofia -- 5 years, $18.1M SP Alexis Martin (33) -- Copenhagen -- London -- 4 years, $17.6M SP Robert Wood (37) -- Stockholm -- Budapest -- 2 years, $9.5M CF Ian Meoni (32) -- Oslo -- Stockholm -- 4 years, $21.7M SP Neil MacCombie (31) -- Oslo -- Madrid -- 5 years, $15.4M SP Rory Begley (32) -- Warsaw -- Hamburg -- 4 years, $16.2M RF Max Sabin (27) -- Milan -- Vienna -- 3 years, $15.2M SS Vladimir Erantsev (30) -- Copenhagen -- Oslo -- 7 years, $28.2M LF Bernard Wulker (29) -- Prague -- Prague -- 4 years, $24.2M 3B Dolf Pellenaars (32) -- Hamburg -- Dublin -- 3 years, $15.1M SP Nenad Jevtic (28) -- Milan -- Moscow -- 4 years, $18.1M It would also seem that Hamburg took a step forward. They lost Gilbert and Pellenaars, but they picked up A.J. Meresmaa, who OSA rated as the top free agent because he was so much better than the other catchers available, and Rory Begley. They also signed Roth Fruehwirt, who won 25 games for Prague in 1986. Traditional powers Copenhagen and Milan would appear to have gotten worse for the new season as they lost some big names and didn't appear to replace them. One team who bucked the trend and signed their potential free agents to deals before the free-agency period was the Amsterdam Selects. They chose not to extend Meresmaa, but did sign Alois Maloney and Kristof Kis. They may have ended up overpaying for Kis though. He is undoubtedly a talented player, but $20.8M over 3 years (for a 36 year old, no less) makes him the highest paid player in the EBL. Reiging champions Berlin didn't make too many additions, but also didn't lose too much. European League Series Vilfred Krak did join the Warsaw Wild, but this isn't seen as a major loss. |

Rookie Erstweiler Is Perfect
April 30th 1987 - When he won 6 games at the 1984 European Championships as a 22 year-old, it seemed that Pauli Erstweiler was destined for EBL stardom. At the time he was still playing in the AAA British League for the Crawley Weavers, an affiliate of the Copenhagen Armada, but the experts were all in agreement that it would not be long before he made the major European League. As it turned out he spent another two full seasons in AAA after a slightly disappointing 1985 season. His chance at an EBL roster spot only arose after Copenhagen failed to sign Alexis Martin in the off-season and didn't really replace him. ![]() It didn't take him long to make a massive impact on the EBL, as he pitched the league's first ever perfect game yesterday against the reigning champion Berlin Dragons. The Austrian left-hander needed only 100 pitches to retire 27 Dragon hitters, striking out 6 on the way and keeping Berlin off the bases all day long. It was only his 5th career start and continues a superb start to his EBL career. The stats show a 4-0 record with an eye-popping ERA of 0.79 and only 17 hits allowed in 34 innings. Pauli 'Perfect' Erstweiler will certainly be a name to look out for in the coming weeks and years. |

Five of the twelve games went to extra innings on April 23rd. Prague and Lisbon had 10 game losing streaks in the first month of the season. Hamburg were 22-6 in April. Two managers have been fired in the first half. Amsterdam and Prague are the clubs that made the changes at the top. In mid May Paris, Copenhagen and Hamburg all had win streaks of 9 games or more that started on the same day. Hamburg ended up winning 11 in a row. Glasgow swept Dublin in June by winning 3 extra innings games. The sweep capped a 14-2 run for the Stallions. There were two 19 inning games in the same week just before the All-Star break. Budapest were not really in contention, but they have dropped even further back with a 3-15 record so far in June. Player Notes - Dublin's pitchers had a great start to the season. Trofimoff Eksler threw a two-hitter againt Lisbon in the 4th game of the season, then the next day Jere Ronkko, threw a three-hitter against the same opponents. Aside from Pauli Erstweiler's perfect game, there have been three other no-hitters. Torquato Morais (Helsinki) threw one against Berlin on April 8th, 5 Copenhagen pitchers combined to no-hit Oslo on May 31st and Joesph Sykora (Vienna) pitched the other against Zurich on June 6th. On the same day as the perfect game, Emanuel Biancardi threw a three-hitter against Barcelona. Vince Klapwijk (Milan) had 3 home runs in a game against London on April 27th. A day later, Armando Barrios (Barcelona) hit for the cycle versus Amsterdam. Vienna's off-season investments have certainly paid off so far. Not only are they in first place, but the two big names they brought in both won a Hitter of the Month award. Theo Brittain took the award for April (his 3rd HoM award with 3 different teams) and Max Sabin won the award in May (his 7th success). Vienna also won the Pitcher of the Month award for April thanks to James McIlwraith, who followed up the award with a one-hitter on May 2nd. The EL's April award winners were Jamel Baud (Helsinki) and Hamburg's Quentin van Rossum. Moscow beat Prague 4-3 on May 6th thanks to Stanislov Paristy's walk off 3 run shot. Four days later the Blue Sox were on the wrong end of a walk off 2-out Grand Slam from Stockholm's Andreas Edbom. Now market value has been set a few teams are looking to lock up their stars to long-term deals, especially ones who don't count against the foreign player limit. Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin) and Thomas Meinert (Copenhagen), who between them have all six EL Homegrown Player of the Year awards, have both signed new deals. Ahlmann will earn $14.8M over 4 years and Meinert stands to pocket $25.4M for 5 year's work. Randy Schmidt (Hamburg) hit in every game in May. His hit streak finished at an EBL record 32 games in early June. His exploits were not enough to win the EL Hitter of the Month award. This accolade went to Rudolf Tuhina of Copenhagen. May's Pitcher of the Month awards went to Steve Lovegrove (Glasgow) and Pierangelo Magherini (Prague). Eskil Junge (London) and Franz Badeni (Vienna) had 8 and 7 RBI respectively in the same game. Badeni had the game-winning RBI as the Armageddon beat the Crocs 15-14 in 12 innings in the teams' last game before the break. Significant Injuries - Samuel Polach (Hamburg), 1986's EL Hitter and Rookie of the Year missed 4 weeks early in the season with a rib injury. Stockholm's 4-time All-Star, Callum Maxwell, was injured early in May and won't be back until the start of August. Eero Lehvaslaiho (Barcelona) was injured on June 16th and will miss the rest of the season. He should be back for the start of the 1988 season. His statline in 1987 was a .301 average with 13 homers and 52 RBI. Liam Bosanquet (Hamburg) is out until 6 weeks after the All-Star break. He has won 7 games so far and has a 2.75 ERA. Copenhagen scored 10 runs in an inning on July 10th against Berlin. Berlin repaid the favour on September 21st. The biggest inning of the second half was an 11 run effort by London on the same day as Berlin's. Paris won 19 games in July (second only to Copenhagen's 21) to overtake Glasgow for the division lead. Helsinki had a 17 inning and an 18 inning game in the last month of the season. Warsaw and Athens also played a 17 inning game. Stockholm won a game against Hamburg on July 28th by hitting back-to-back-to-back homers in the 10th inning. Warsaw won 15 games in a row at the end of August/start of September. During this stretch, Moscow were 6-9, allowing Warsaw to overtake them and pull away. Barcelona had a shot at taking the last Wildcard spot, but they lost 7 games in a row to lose ground. Glasgow and Paris both lost on the last day of the season. Paris took the division title thanks to winning two-thirds of their games against the Stallions on the season. With Paris and Moscow both making the post-season, the Lisbon Renegades are now the only EBL franchise never to make the playoffs. Player Notes - There were 4 two-hitters and 4 three-hitters after the All-Star break. The two-hitters were thrown by Pierangelo Magherini (Prague), Sindre Grondalen (Oslo), Jens Fetterlein (Copenhagen) and Jeroen Gerten (Prague). The three-hitters went to Quentin van Rossum (Hamburg), Vladimir Karakash (Berlin), Stuart Seaward (Dubln) and Rory Begley (Hamburg). Twelve different players won the Monthly awards after the break - WL Hitter - Jason Dyer (Amsterdam), Scott Ashwell (London), Philippe Martin (Milan) EL Hitter - Thomas Meinert (Copenhagen), Billy Pawlett (Copenhagen), Francis Gautier (Sofia) WL Pitcher - Clement Mounier (Glasgow), Malcolm Kennedy (Paris), Tahvo Ahonen (Madrid) EL Pitcher - Bart Taft (Oslo), Jens Fetterlein (Copenhagen), Michel Thiery (Oslo) Ashwell had been traded from Paris to the Crocs on July 8th and went on to have a great July, hitting .424 and batting in 24 runs. Paris got pitcher Panos Metrofanis in return. Lisbon's Ota Hospodar scored 5 runs and had 5 RBIs against Dublin on July 24th. A week later Kristof Kis (Amsterdam) was 5/5 with 5 runs scored against Paris. Copenhagen traded for Jordan Barnstaple to bolster their championship push. He will be a free-agent following the 1987 season. Glasgow added Noah Cawston for their playoff campaign. He was only hitting .199 with Berlin before the trade. Rookie Thomas Hutt (London) was 3/3 with 3 HR and 6 RBI in a 7-5 win against Amsterdam. Significant Injuries - Trofimoff Eksler (Dublin) will be out for more than a year with a tricep injury. He was 7-4 with a 4.39 ERA on June 24th, when it heppened. Lorenzo Gutierrez (Brussels) missed the second half of July and all of August. Berlin's Timon 'Sundown' Panayi missed the last two months of the season with a fractured wrist. He hit .296 with 13 home runs on the year. The EBL's career leader in ERA, Theo Gerritsen (Amsterdam) missed the last two months of the season. His 1987 ERA was 1.90. In his first start since returning from his first half injury, Liam Bosanquet (Hamburg), injured himself again and missed another month. The injury prone Aetos 'Frisky' Zikos (Berlin) missed the end of another season, this time with an elbow problem. Lukas Stoger (Paris) will miss his club's playoff appearance and will miss most of the 1988 season with a fractured ankle. He had 18 home runs to go with his .287 average this season. Your Money Or Your Life?
I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the free-agent class of 1986/87 to see which clubs got the most for their money. Code:
C Antti-Jussi Meresmaa -- 3 years, $16.7M -- .293, 13 HR, 93 RBI, .875 OPS, 52.9 VORP CF Theo Brittain -- 2 years, $11.2M -- .317, 29 HR, 98 RBI, .960 OPS, 74.4 VORP 1B Francis Gautier -- 5 years, $25.7M -- .333, 16 HR, 81 RBI, .882 OPS, 50.7 VORP 1B Lukas Stoger -- 5 years, $25.4M -- .287, 18 HR, 61 RBI, .894 OPS, 28.0 VORP - injured for the next 12 months 1B Lorenzo Gutierrez -- 5 years, $26.0M -- .291, 9 HR, 61 RBI, .778 OPS, 26.7 VORP CF Jacquy Gilbert -- 5 years, $18.1M -- .268, 19 HR, 79 RBI, .790 OPS, 29.0 VORP SP Alexis Martin -- 4 years, $17.6M -- 12-14, 4.79 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 238.2 IP, 6.7 VORP SP Robert Wood -- 2 years, $9.5M -- 12-8, 4.12 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 231.2 IP, 25.7 VORP CF Ian Meoni -- 4 years, $21.7M -- .289, 24 HR, 84 RBI, .881 OPS, 48.0 VORP SP Neil MacCombie -- 5 years, $15.4M -- 8-19, 5.04 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 214.1 IP, 0.0 VORP SP Rory Begley -- 4 years, $16.2M -- 13-9, 3.81 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 231.1 IP, 20.7 VORP RF Max Sabin -- 3 years, $15.2M -- .316, 27 HR, 119 RBI, .928 OPS, 66.7 VORP SS Vladimir Erantsev -- 7 years, $28.2M -- .250, 15 HR, 46 RBI, .750 OPS, 34.5 VORP LF Bernard Wulker -- 4 years, $24.2M -- .316, 16 HR, 91 RBI, .836 OPS, 42.7 VORP 3B Dolf Pellenaars -- 3 years, $15.1M -- .227, 18 HR, 74 RBI, .819 OPS, 31.4 VORP SP Nenad Jevtic -- 4 years, $18.1M -- 13-12, 2.86 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 223.2 IP, 51.2 VORP The only real failures were the pitchers Martin and MacCombie, but Gutierrez also underperformed - The Hitmen will hope he does the business in the post season. Whilst not really a failure, Paris will not be exactly happy with paying Stoger $5M for rehabbing his ankle in 1988. Last edited by Craig Costello; 08-08-2008 at 11:35 AM. |

1988 Preview
March 31st 1988 - The 8th season of EBL action is about to get underway and it will be followed by the second ever European Baseball Championships. I liked the free-agent listing I did for 1987, so it makes a return for '88 - Code:
Player (age) -- Old Team -- New Team -- Contract 2B Holly Connich (26) -- Warsaw -- Prague -- 5 years, $26.6M RF Jordan Barnstaple (32) -- Copenhagen -- Dublin -- 4 years, $9.5M SP James McIlwraith (30) -- Vienna -- Oslo -- 6 years, $29.2M SP Jesus Ruiz (27) -- Brussels -- Warsaw -- 4 years, $18.7M CF Armando Barrios (30) -- Barcelona -- Budapest -- 4 years, $11.7M CF Jean-Yves Gras (31) -- London -- Sofia -- 2 years, $3.7M SP Jeirgif Izvekov (24) -- Budapest -- Berlin -- 3 years, $13.0M 3B Dennis Frangopoulos (38) -- Milan -- Oslo -- 2 years, $9.7M LF Constantino Deodato (30) -- Glasgow -- Amsterdam -- 4 years, $20.3M CF Josef Metternich (27) -- Paris -- Paris -- 5 years, $21.2M 1B Igoryok Vishipanov (26) -- Dublin -- Athens -- 7 years, $26.8M SS Harlan McRea (30) -- Amsterdam -- Lisbon -- 6 years, $23.7M SP Yoan Lelievre (30) -- Copenhagen -- Zurich -- 5 years, $18.5M 2B Randy Schmidt (27) -- Hamburg -- London -- 6 years, $25.4M Athens' signing of Vishipanov is good news for the Avalanche fans. They also signed RP Juan Sandoval, who is an elite closer. Lisbon also signed a decent player not listed above - Patrick Lacroix has been a consistent performer for Warsaw and was a big part of their championship run last year. Overall, I think the league just got more even for 1988 and it really is anybody's to win. N.B. My fictional manager character has finally made it to an EBL team so updates might not be as frequent as they have in the past. |

Dublin and Zurich played a 20 inning game in the first week of the season. Contrasting fortunes for the UK teams - Glasgow started 17-4, whereas London won only 4 of their first 20 and really haven't got much better. Dublin scored 10 runs in the 8th inning of a 22-7 victory over Amsterdam on May 8th. Warsaw beat Prague 10-9 in a 17 inning game on June 14th. Prague scored 5 runs in the 9th to send it to extras then scored 3 in the 10th, but still lost. Player Notes - There have been a slew of 3-hitters and two 2-hitters in the first half. The two-hitters were thrown by Pasqualino Terragni (Lisbon) and Noah Flatoy (Oslo). Paris C Fernao Espinhel had 5 RBI and 5 runs scored in a 17-5 win over Amsterdam on April 19th. Malcolm Kennedy (Paris) has won the WL Pitcher of the Month award in both April and May. At the break he is 12-3 with a 1.32 ERA. Two Warsaw Wild pitchers have won the EL award - Francis Maze in April and free-agent signing Jesus Ruiz in May. Two familiar names have won the WL Hitter of the Month award, whereas two lesser knowns have won the EL award. The WL award went to Max Sabin (Vienna) in April and Philippe Martin (Milan) in May. In the EL, the winners were Dragutin Vasiljevic (Helsinki) and Claudio DalMaistro (Oslo). DalMaistro celebrated his award by hitting a game-winning 3 run homer on June 1st. Kristof Rozsa (Copenhagen) has set a new EBL record hitting streak at 37 games. At the break he is hitting .376. Barcelona's Wilmar Dietzsch had 6 hits as his team beat Zurich 18-4 on June 6th. Significant Injuries - Steve Moynan (Moscow) was injured in early May and won't be back until July. 22 year-old RF Yoann Bernard (Paris), who is hitting .335, has a hernia injury and will be out until August. Helsinki's best pithcer, Joseph Sykora, is out for the season with a tricep injury suffered on May 25th. Igoryok Vishipanov (Athens) won't be able to repay his new team's investment in him this year, as he has a head injury that will keep him out for all of 1988 and will also rule him out of the upcoming European Championships for Russia. |

Glasgow won 13 games in a row in July to take control of the North Sea division. Dublin faded over the second half then collapsed in September. Amsterdam and Lisbon also had good July's to enhance their playoff credentials. The Renegades won 19 games in the month and the Selects went 2 better. On the other hand Vienna struggled mightily and lost 21 games in July. Hamburg won 16 of 19 games to overtake Copenhagen and held on to win the division. Oslo fired their manager in late August. Amsterdam had the biggest inning of the season with an 11 run effort against Barcelona in a 15-7 win. All 24 teams have now qualified for the playoffs at least once. Lisbon were the last team to achieve it and they did it in style with the best record in the league. Milan and Athens lost on the last day to hand the final Wildcard spots to Amsterdam and Helsinki. The Avalanche's loss was particularly heartbreaking as they went down in 13 innings to Stockholm. Player Notes - Quite a few unfamiliar names won monthly awards in the second half of the season. Here is the compete list - WL Hitter - Ludwig Herzog (Glasgow), Salmund Jaerbyn (Vienna), Jason Dyer (Amsterdam) EL Hitter - Dragutin Vasiljevic (Helsinki), Pantalian Lobeiro (Stockholm), Jacquy Gilbert (Sofia) WL Pitcher - Callum Cayzer (Glasgow), Woody Lyth (Amsterdam), Eugen Linge (Lisbon) EL Pitcher - Jeirgif Izvekov (Berlin), Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin), Hellmuth Seipel (Athens) Quentin van Rossum (Hamburg) pitched a one-hitter against Warsaw on July 14th. There were also one-hitters for Sindre Grondalen (Oslo) and Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin). Tyrone Panagiotopou of Amsterdam struck out 14 Dublin hitters in a 5-1 win on July 21st. Berlin acquired Sammy Denny from Madrid for their unsuccessful playoff push. He led the league with 14 wins at the time and finished with 19. Lisbon's Roque Vilardeb pitched a two-hitter on 31st July against London. His team-mate Jedrus Martynski pitched a 10 inning complete game on August 17th, winning 1-0 against Dublin. Madrid team-mates Oscar Gottlieb and Daniel Keurost combined to outplay Zurich on their own. Gottlieb pitched a shutout, giving up 3 hits and Keurost was 5 for 5 as the Hawks won 17-0. Significant Injuries - Max Sabin (Vienna) injured himself in a Euro Championship year again. He missed the last 2 months of the season and will not be available for England (again!). Callum Maxwell (Stockholm) missed the last month of the season with a groin injury. The 36 year-old will not be fit for the start of the European Championships, so might not be selected by Scotland. Maxwell's team-mate Ian Meoni missed a month with a wrist injury, then injured himself again on the last day of the season, meaning he will miss the Euros for Switzerland. He hit .309, with 21 homers this season. Prague's Bernard Wulker missed most of the last month of the season. Amsterdam's progress in the playoffs will be hampered by late season injuries picked up by Kristof Kis and Constantino Deodato. Kis should be back if they advance to the WLCS, but Deodato will miss all of the playoffs. Hamburg will also be missing a key part for the playoffs, with Samuel Polach on the sidelines. He hit 32 HR for the Heat in 1988. |
