1988 European Champs Preview
October 23rd 1988 - The draw for the tournament is as follows - Code:
Group A Group B Bulgaria Denmark France Hungary Italy Norway Portugal Austria Poland England Netherlands Scotland Spain Sweden Czech Republic Greece Ireland Finland Russia Germany Switzerland Belgium A dark horse for the title might be the Netherlands, who have a decent rotation and a few great hitters. Ireland started as they meant to go on with a 16-4 record over the first half (exactly duplicated in the second half). They played the longest game of the tournament on the second day when they beat Portugal 6-5 in 20 innings. Their UK neighbours didn't quite start so well, with England winning only 3 of their first 13 and Scotland starting 4-16. England's start included a game against Norway that was tied at 2 after 6 innings, then nobody scored until the Norwegians won it in the bottom of the 18th. Russia scored 4 in the 1st, 5 in the 2nd and 6 in the 3rd in a game in which they beat the Netherlands 19-2. Germany won 10 of 12 games to pull equal with Austria and Finland in Group B. Finland were swept in Belgium in their last series to miss out. Norwegian and Danish pitchers combined to walk a staggering 25 batters in a game which Norway won 14-12. The game only went 9 innings, but still lasted 4 hours and 16 minutes. Spain got 2nd in Group A despite losing their last two games in Poland. France were busy being swept at home by Russia to let them in. Player Notes - Ireland's Billy Pawlett and Jason Dyer both hit two home runs on opening day as they beat Portugal 10-2. Rich Klein (Germany) had a 5/5 day with 2 doubles, a homer and 4 RBI in a 10-1 win over Belgium. 1984's Euro Championship Final Series MVP, Jacquy Gilbert (France), hit 4 doubles and scored 4 runs in his team's 11-3 win against Bulgaria. Ludwig Herzog (Austria) was 5/5 with 2 HR, 5 RBI and 5 runs scored as his team won 20-8 against Greece. On the same day, Finland's Eero Lehvaslaiho had 7 RBI in a 22-2 win over England. Nathan White (England) pitched the first no-hitter in European Championship history. He only walked 2 hitters against Belgium. There were three other complete game shutouts in the tournament, by Jesus Ruiz, Panos Metrofanis and Botol Burnay. Lorenzo Gutierrez (Spain) hit 3 home runs for 6 RBI against Italy to lead his team to an 8-6 win. On the last day of regular season play, two players hit for the cycle. Rich Scherer (Germany) and Ian Meoni (Switzerland) were both on the losing side though. Meoni also had a cycle in the 1984 tournament. All Tournament Team Code:

1989 Preview
March 31st 1989 - Less in the way of marquee free agents for the 1989 season. Theo Brittain has moved again (to his 4th different club in 9 years). He has ended up in Madrid, where he will be joined in the outfield by another new addition, Fabio Quinhones, fresh from winning the 1988 championship with Lisbon. Berlin made a couple of decent additions in SP Francis Maze and CF Pablo Hernandez and should be in contention in the Baltic division. The biggest name to move was Claudio Lwenholm, who also ended up in the Baltic division with the Hambrug Heat. His loss wil probably mean another rebuilding season for Amsterdam. Hamburg also acquired Wilmar Dietzsch in a trade with Barcelona. They gave up SP Quentin van Rossum in return. 1982's #1 draft pick, Volker Ziesemer, didn't live up to expectations in Barcelona and has been traded to Warsaw for not a lot in return. Overall the top teams from last year will probably be in contention again. |

He is 5-2 with a 2.03 ERA. |

Barcelona beat Brussels 2-1 in the longest game of the season, a 21 inning game on June 29th. Brussels also played a game when they scored 10 in an inning, but still lost 14-13 to Zurich. Paris scored 5 in the bottom of the 9th to beat Barcelona 7-6 on July 11th. Copenhagen won 9 in a row in July to leap into 1st in the Baltic division and they held on the rest of the way. Athens scored 5 in the 8th, 2 in the 9th and 2 in the 10th to beat Oslo 10-8 on August 30th. Dublin scored 6 runs in the top of the 1st, but Madrid responded with 9 in their half of the first frame on their way to a 13-12 win. Prague and Dublin both won on the last day to secure their division titles. Player Notes - Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin) lost his first game of the season on August 28th. His unbeaten streak stretched over the second half of 1988 and accounted for 31 starts, an EBL record. Ibrahim Grandjean (Dublin) and Roque Vilardeb (Lisbon) both had a one-hitter in the second half. Again there were 12 award winners in the second half. The hitters were Stefan Kowelski (Glasgow), Philippe Martin (Milan), Jason Dyer (Amsterdam), Gottfried Helfkin (Stockholm), Eduardo Aguilar (Budapest) and Samuel Polach (Hamburg). The pitchers were Tahvo Ahonen (Madrid), Malcolm Kennedy (Paris), Juliao Virgolino (Barcelona), Tobias Handeland (Athens), Michel Theiry (Oslo) and Guy Brady (Copenhagen). Lisbon's Danny Day hit a walk-off 3 run homer in a 6-5 win over Paris on July 15th. Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) hit 3 home runs against Sofia on July 23rd. Stefan Kowelski (Glasgow) repeated the feat in a loss to Paris on July 31st. Vienna C Mark MacClacher had a 6/6 day on August 13th. Francois Cotte (Barcelona) had 7 RBI as his team beat Paris 14-3 on August 15th. Berlin's Dzevat Adzovic also had a 7 RBI day on August 19th. Adzovic's was more remarkable because his team only scored 7 runs as they beat Sofia. Samuel Polach (Hamburg) hit his first ever cycle on August 28th. Philippe Martin (Milan) had a 7 RBI day in September, but the best hitting performance of the second half was by Tomislaw Eudzerski (Dublin) who was 6/7, including hitting for the cycle, with 6 RBI and 4 runs scored in a 22-1 win over Milan on September 10th. Nicodemus Theothanou (Brussels) had a 30 game hit streak late in the season. Significant Injuries - Bernard Wulker (Prague) missed 4 weeks with a back injury. He then injured himself later in the season and will miss the playoffs. He finished at .352 with 18 homers and 74 RBI. The Eliminators will also be without rookie Sergio Lousa, who hit .299 with 9 HR and 41 RBI in his first full season. Lousa's injury will also probably keep him out of all of the 1990 season. Dublin's Raul Marroquin was injured on July 29th and missed the remainder of the season. He had 26 homers before his shoulder gave way. |

March 31st 1990 - Two huge names have cashed in in the latest round of free-ageny madness in the EBL. Malcolm Kennedy has signed with home-town club the Dublin Wolfpack. The 3 time WL Pitcher of the Year and #1 overall pick in the inaugural EBL draft spent 9 years in Paris and will earn $13.5M over 4 years in his native Ireland. Athens spent even more than Dublin ($16.5M over 4 years) to bring Philippe Martin to Greece from the Milan Mud Cats. Martin remains the only man to ever win an EBL Triple Crown and his new club will be hoping he can produce something similar in the WL. The biggest contract (at least in total money) was given to Igoryok Vishipanov who joined the Hamburg Heat for $18.5M over 7 years. Two time reinging WL champions the Lisbon Renegades have lost one of the key members of their rotation in Roque Vilardeb, who has joined dvision rivals Madrid. The trade market was slightly quieter. Two interesting names were Jamel Baud who has gone to Moscow and Claudio Lwenholm who has been traded back to Amsterdam after only hitting .270 with 9 home runs in his one season in Hamburg. |

There is going to be the first ever one game playoff in league history. The Oslo Metros and Copenhagen Armada went into the last day tied and they both won their final game, meaning they will meet in Denmark to decide who advances to meet Prague. Prague and Sofia played a game on June 30th that was tied at 0 after 8 innings. It was also tied (at 1) after 9. It took 10 innings for the next run to be scored, with the Sting being victorious. The longest game of the season was a 20 inning 2-1 win for Madrid over Glasgow. Glasgow managed just 5 hits in the marathon game. Berlin and Hamburg both won 20 games in July to virtually seal their playoff spots. Dublin scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th on July 30th. Unfortunately for them, Paris had scored 8 in the top half and won 8-4. Paris started September 12-3 to pull clear of Dublin for the final wildcard. Sofia played an 18 inning and a 16 inning game on consecutive days. Player Notes - Rookie Collins Gallager (Barcelona) was named as WL Pitcher of the Month for June and July, compiling a 9-1 record in the two months combined with an ERA under 2. Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin) also won multiple PoM awards, taking home the EL award in July and August. The other PoM award winners were Quincy Kilbane (Prague) and Dane Meling (Madrid). The six Hitter of the Month awards went to Ludwig Herzog (Glasgow), Paulus Penning (Lisbon), Nicodemus Theothanou (Brussels), Joshua Quarry (Hamburg), Gage McMahan (Athens) and Arsen Pentzopoulos (Moscow). Former #1 draft pick, Russell Gilmartin (Paris), had 7 RBI in his teams 11-3 win over Amsterdam on July 3rd. Casper Laestadius (Stockholm) hit 3 HR and had 6 RBI to lead the Lumberjacks to a 7-1 win over Warsaw. Pierangelo Magherini (Prague) pitched a no-hitter against Sofia on August 6th. He was perfect until he hit a batter with one out in the 9th. Aidan Fletcher (Glasgow) pitched a one-hitter in the last week of the season. Barcelona's Jarle Bjorkhaug had 3 solo home runs to lead his team to a 5-2 win over Zurich. Significant Injuries - Holly Connich (Prague) was injured just after the All-Star break and will miss the playoffs. He was hitting .308 with 61 RBI. Copenhagen's Rudolf Tuhina missed 7 weeks from the middle of July. Raul Marroquin (Dublin) was stuck on 25 HR for a month after pinching a nerve late in August. James McIlwraith (Oslo) will miss the playoffs if the Metros make it. He was 14-12 on the season with a 3.53 ERA. Last edited by Craig Costello; 11-07-2008 at 01:51 PM. |

As we are a decade into the EBL, it seems a good time to compare the records of all of the franchises. Code:

1991 Preview
March 31st 1991 - Not wanting to stand still the two-time reigning champion Berlin Dragons have made a couple of minor trades ready for the new season. They have traded away Demetrio Morbidelli and Dale Conway to Dublin and Oslo respectively. In the Dublin trade they did manage to pick up Casey Ferrell, who will certainly help their push for a third consecutive title. The biggest name in free agency was former Madrid Hawk, Daniel Keurost. The Austrian third baseman has signed a 5 year, $21.8M deal with the Athens Avalanche. The next largest contract went to C Simon Warmisch, who has joined Keurost's old team for $24.9M over 7 years. Other notable free-agent moves were Ota Hospodar joining Paris and Patrick Lacroix moving to Hamburg. Experts are predicting a similar line-up in the 1991 playoffs as there was in the 1990 version. |

Berlin, Copenhagen and Hamburg were tied going into the last day, with Stockholm just 1 game back of them all. Only the Dragons won of the three top teams, meaning that they clinched the division title. The Lumberjacks also won, meaning we had a 3 way tie for the final wildcard spot. Copenhagen were eliminated because of their poor head-to-head record with the Heat and Lumberjacks, so Hamburg and Stockholm will meet for one game in Germany to decide who gets to play Athens in the first round of the playoffs. Copenhagen had taken the division lead thanks to a 19-9 August, while Hamburg and Berlin were losing 17 and 15 respectively in the month. Zurich lost on the last day to Milan to miss out on the postseason. Athens scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat Warsaw 10-9 on June 28th. Warsaw went on to struggle through the whole second half and fired their manager in September. Vienna and Lisbon played 15 scorless innings on July 20th. The Renegades won 1-0 in 16. London conceded 12 runs in the 9th in a 24-5 loss to Amsterdam on August 23rd. The next day they themselves scored 12 runs in the final frame to clinch a 17-7 win against Zurich. Player Notes - Stefan Kowleski (Glasgow) had 8 RBI in his teams 9-5 win against Milan on June 25th. Eero Lehvaslaiho was 5/5 with a double, a homer, 6 RBI and 5 runs as he led the Barcelona Iguanas to a 18-4 win against Amsterdam on June 30th. Less than two weeks later he was traded to the Milan Mud Cats. Another notable name traded was 1990's EL Rookie of the Year, Ricardo Trujillo. He had been demoted to AAA by Budapest, then he was traded to Vienna. Twelve different players of the month in the second half. The hitters were Nicodemus Theothanou (Brussels), Bartolomej Burik (Zurich), Cheung 'The China Pole' Ying (Brussels), Artemis Vlakhou (Oslo), Augusto Rith (Warsaw) and Foppe Vlackenburgh (Budapest). The pitchers were Alois Maloney (Amsterdam), Panos Metrofanis (Vienna), Malcolm Kennedy (Dublin), Mirko Bukvajova (Stockholm), Rory Begley (Hamburg) and Vladimir Karakash (Sofia). London's Matyash Pertusov threw a one-hitter against Dublin on July 3rd. There were one-hitter's later in the season for Gustavo Cardenas (Moscow), Liam Bosanquet (Budapest) and Michel Thiery (Oslo). These perfomances were all toped by two no-hitters in the first week of September. The first was thrown by Warsaw rookie Milovan Jokanovic against Prague, quickly followed by Sergej Vervoort (Brussels) against Zurich. Alexander Parnevik (Milan) hit 3 solo home runs in his team's 10- win over Vienna on July 17th. Thomas Meinert (Copenhagen) had a 3/3 day against Hamburgon August 16th, which took him to 2002 career hits. He is the first man to pass 2000 hits in the EBL. Pauli Wertheim (London) successfully converted 51 save opportunities in a row (dating back to 1990). Helmuth Seipel (Athens) has become the first EBL player to win a pitching triple crown. He led the EL in wins (21), ERA (2.82) and strikeouts (236). Significant Injuries - Halran Mcrea (Lisbon) will miss the playoffs and possibly the start of the 1992 season. He was not having an amazing season (.261/7/53 on September 4th), but his absence might affect the Renegades in the postseason, as he is one of their veteran leaders. Wallace Zobel (Hamburg) who was named as the #1 prospect in baseball before the season, will miss most if not all of the 1992 season with an ankle injury. He was hitting .312 wth 14 HR and 76 RBI after 5 months of his first full season. Another promising youngster, 22 year-old Teemu Tiilikainen (Amsterdam), will miss the first few months on the 92 season with an ankle injury. He had 29 HR on the season. |

Kimmel's two early homers had staked Moscow to a 7-3 lead in the 8th inning. The outstanding Raquel Ferrobeiro (10/28, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 5 R) hit a 2-run homer to get Paris closer. Moscow veteran, Ony Proskurnya, then dropped a routine flyball with two outs allowing Russell Gilmartin to tie things up with a 2 RBI single and Ota Hospodar to put Paris in front with an RBI double. Moscow didn't get to their first ever European League Series by throwing in the towel and they showed great resilience to tie things up the 9th thanks to a two-out RBI single by Fedya Makin. Arthur Mercier gave Paris a chance to win it in the bottom of the 9th by hitting a one-out double, then advancing to 3rd on a wild pitch. He chose to head for home on a ground ball and was called out on a bang-bang play at the plate. The 10th passed without incident, then in the 11th, Kimmel made history by crushing the ball over the centerfield fence to send the Blue Sox bench into raptures. |
