1992 Preview
March 31st 1992 - The reigning champs have been dismantled to a degree over the offseason. Urs Kimmel, who was the star of Game 7, with 3 homers, has left in free agency (joining the Amsterdam Selects for $27.5M over 6 years). They have also lost Arsen Pentzopoulos and Ian Meoni in trades. It will be interesting to see if they can challenge to defend their title. The Sofia Sting spent a lot of money in free-agency, bringing in veteran 1B Lukas Stoger and re-signing their own veteran star, Jacquy Gilbert. The other big contract was for Samuel Polach, who might threaten to break the stragnlehold of Thomas Meinert and Kaspar Ahlmann on the EL Homegrown Player of the Year award, after joining Budapest for $37.2M over 7 seasons. With the loss of Stoger, the Paris Cyclones should be weaker this season. Maybe it is time for a team other than they and the Lisbon Renegades to represent the EL in the European League Series. |

love your dynasty...very well done
questions---when you copy your file for the European Championships, do you do it in game or copy the folder and rename it? and, how do you get your EC to be played immediately after your EL season ends?(when I try something like this, it won't let me do it until the next spring) |

I create a new league within the game and simply tell it to start the schedule on 4th November 1988 (or whatever). The default for the season start date is to have the year blank, but I always select the current year before proceeding. Last edited by Craig Costello; 10-01-2008 at 02:47 PM. |

1992 European Championships Preview
October 26th 1992 -The powers that be have decided upon a new format for the 1992 tournament. They hope to cut out a few uncompetetive games by making the tournament a two-tier affair. The bottom 3 teams from each group last time round (Poland, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Belgium, Scotland and England) have been banished to 'Division B' where they will play each other for the chance to appear in the top flight in 1996. This leaves 16 teams in 'Division A', who will be drawn into two groups of 8 and proceed from there. Each team will play all of the others in their group 6 times (giving a 42 game schedule) with the top two proceeding to the knockout stages. The bottom team in each group will be relegated to Division B for 1996 with the top two from Division B this time round being called up to replace them. Division B will be a simple round robin with the teams playing each other 8 times (giving 40 games). The draw for Division A is as follows. Code:
Group A Group B Ireland Hungary Czech Republic Norway Germany Sweden Italy Netherlands Denmark Spain Portugal Russia France Finland Greece Austria Last edited by Craig Costello; 10-16-2008 at 08:57 AM. |

This league is extremely well done and the story is a real joy to read. The uniforms are beautiful, and cool uniforms, I think, really help make a fun league even more fun to play.
I've been thinking of setting up a European League, with just a simple 3-tier minor league system. Perhaps you would consider posting your league as a quickstart on Padresfan's site? I'm sure a lot of people would want to play it.

I do have a version of it as a quickstart (with all new fictional players), which I am more than happy to provide. I'll get in touch with Padresfan. |

Denmark had a mid-season tear, winning 9 of 10 to pull within 1 game of the French and move ahead of the Czechs and Irish. France's loss in Prague gave them a 20-10 record (and a 16-2 road record) and they still led Group A, but they then lost a series in Denmark and Ireland's 7 wins in a row moved them to the top of the Group with Denmark just behind, which is how it stayed. In Group B, Spain started 11-1 and were never in danger of missing out. Finland, Sweden and Austria always seemed to lose at the wrong time and no team was able to pull clear of the others. On the last day both the Finns and Swedes suffered a reverse and they had to have a one-game playoff for the honour of facing Ireland. Norway were favourites to be relagated in Group B from early on and fulfilled that promise. The race in Group A was much tighter, but Greece lost 7 in a row to finish the touranament and will be in Division B in 1996. Poland and Switzerland both had a comfortable lead in Division B at the half-way stage and could even afford to take their foot off the pedal as the tournament wound down. The longest game of the tournament was Norway's 7-6 win over Sweden in 19 innings. The highest score and biggest inning came in Austria's 21-0 win over the Swedes. They scored 11 times in the 6th inning. Player Notes - Raul Marroquin (Spain) had a 4/4 day with 2 home runs in his team's early 5-2 win over Russia. He ended the regular schedule with an astonishing 18 homers in 41 games played. Denmark's Klement Thunmark hit for the cycle in his team's 11-2 win over Portugal, but later suffered a major injury (more below). In the 19 inning game, Gustaf Bashe (Sweden) went 6/8, but ended up on the losing side even though Norway left 30 men on base. Pancho Martinez (Spain) had the best pitching performance of the tournament with a one-hitter against Hungary in a 6-0 win. Some other notable performances were a four-hitter by Raynaud Mori (Italy), 11 strikeouts in a loss by Anibal Escamilla (Spain), a two-hitter by Adrik Selifanov (Russia) in a 1-0 win over Finland and 13 Ks by Collins Gallagher (Ireland) against Italy. 22 year-old C Panas Ishenin (Russia), who is only in A-level ball, went 4/5, with a double, a homer and 7 RBI in a 13-4 win against Hungary. Stuart Seaward (Ireland) led Group A in wins (7), ERA (2.32) and strikeouts (66). All Tournament Team Code:

Nicodemus Theothanou (Greece) missed a couple of weeks early on, but he was back in tow for the Greek's disastrous collapse into Division B. France lost their closer, Christian Michel (38 saves for Athens in 1992, 11 in 13 games for France, 1 ER in 10.2 IP), for the tournament just about when they started losing their lead in Group A. Michel, along with the following, will be missing a portion of time in the 1993 EBL season (EBL team in brackets) - Klement Thunmark (Dublin), Filip Yalovoi (Madrid), Arhippa Karjalainen (Helsinki), Anibal Escamilla (Hamburg), Klement Follerup (Vienna). Follerup will probably not be able to suit up at all next season. Knockout Stages Play In: Sweden 8 Finland 4 - The Swedes broke a 2-2 tie in the 7th when they plated 4 runs on consecutive doubles by Adrian Henge and Alberik Landgre. 1993 Preview
March 31st 1993 - The Berlin Dragons can probably legitimately call themselves the first dynasty of the EBL. Their win in the 1992 European League Series gave them three titles in four seasons and their four titles overall is twice as many as the next best team. All eyes will be on them to see if they can make it four titles in five and extend the EL's winning streak to 5 years. They made a decent pick up in the offseason of Artemis Vlakhou in free-agency. He might struggle for playing time behind Gunnar Rippner, but he averaged nearly 20 homers a season in his 6 full years in Oslo. Elsewhere in free-agency a couple of also-ran EBL franchises made the biggest moves. The London Crocs signed 3-time WL Pitcher of the Year, Alexander Schimpf, to a 5-year, $21.7M deal in the hopes of turning around their fortunes. The Zurich Jesters made three interesting acquisitions in Eduardo Aguilar, Francisco Pena and Joakim Tronstad (the last two both being heavily involved in Barcelona's turnaround last season). The best hitter on the market was undoubtedly Raul Marroquin and he got paid to the tune of $24M over 4 years by the Barcelona Iguanas. Below is a detailed list of the biggest free agent names - Code:
Player (age) -- Old Team -- New Team -- Contract SP Tahvo Ahonen (31) -- Madrid -- Prague -- 5 years, $19.0M SP Alexander Schimpf (28) -- Paris -- London -- 5 years, $21.7M SP Helmuth Seipel (35) -- Athens -- Budapest -- 2 years, $6.8M CF Francisco Pena (34) -- Barcelona -- Zurich -- 2 years, $3.6M LF Raul Marroquin (27) -- Dublin -- Barcelona -- 4 years, $24.0M CF Eduardo Aguilar (34) -- Lisbon -- Zurich -- 2 years, $10.1M C Phil Cockx (30) -- Oslo -- Lisbon -- 5 years, $20.7M SS Joakim Tronstad (28) -- Barcelona -- Zurich -- 5 years, $11.4M SP Panos Metrofanis (36) -- Vienna -- Glasgow -- 3 years, $9.8M 1B Artemis Vlakhou (31) -- Oslo -- Berlin -- 3 years, $13.5M SP Yoan Lelievre (35) -- Zurich -- Budapest -- 2 years, $7.9M |

London's investment in the free-agency market has paid off to the tune of a lead in their division. They have been helped by last year's WL champions, Dublin, losing a fair portion of their big name players and having to rebuild and a slightly down season (so far) by Glasgow. Helsinki won 21 games in May and it would be a big surprise if anyone outside of them, Berlin, Copenhagen and Sofia forced their way into the playoffs. There was a new record set for the longest EBL game in history. Zurich beat Vienna 8-7 in 24 innings. After going hitless in his first 10 at bats, Ricardo Wening finished the game with a home run at 2:04am local time. Player Notes - Artemis Vlakhou (Berlin) made a good early impression for his new team, hitting 4 home runs and having 9 RBIs in his first 5 games as a Dragon. The best pitching performance so far of 1993 came early on when Adrien Pierre (Paris) threw a one-hitter against Milan. Two exciting young players would appear to be favourites for the WL Hitter of the Year award. Barcelona's Stefan Fingerlos and Nicodemus Theothanou of Brussels have both won a monthly award so far this season and have pretty impressive stat lines. Theothanou is having a particularly good year, hitting .358 with 24 home runs and 58 RBIs so far. The EL Hitter of the month awards went to two veterans from the Copenhagen Armada. Thomas Meinert won in April and Rudolf Tuhina won in May. Some unknown names have won the Pitcher of the Month award this season. Raynaud Mori (Lisbon) is reasonably well known, but rookie Cosmo Popotas (Paris) is obviously a new name and Karcsi Csontas (Stockholm) and Francis Heeffer (Helsinki) are not exactly famous either. There was a battle to see who would become the first man to 200 EBL wins, which was eventually won by Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin). When he got to 200, Malcolm Kennedy (Dublin) was on 199 and he himself passed the landmark just over a week later. There were also three more players who passed the 2000 hit milestone - Ony Prosurnya (Moscow), Francis Gautier (Copenhagen) and Giacomo Grappasonni (Barcelona). Grapassonni is having the season of his life at 37, hitting .358 with 10 homers thus far. Significant Injuries - Athens CF Arsen Pentzopoulos was injured in the first month of the season and will be out all year. Jason Dyer (Amsterdam) missed 6 weeks from the end of April. Helmuth Seipel (Budapest) saw his first season with a new team cut short thanks to a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament. His 4-8 record with a 5.12 ERA wasn't really paying off the investment anyway. |

Sittler Is Perfect
September 22nd 1993 - Prague Eliminators starter Hubert Sittler yesterday became the second man in European Baseball League history to pitch a perfect game. ![]() The 30 year-old lefty threw 85 pitches, striking out 5 Moscow Blue Sox to enter the record books. For the season, Sittler is 14-14 with a 3.42 ERA. The win improves Prague's record to 78-81, but they will not be taking part in the upcoming playoffs. |

1993 Final Standings
September 26th 1993 - Not many tight races this year, but the playoffs promise to be intriguing. Code:

Madrid 64 98 39 Warsaw 66 96 24
London lost on the last day of the season to miss out on the playoffs and cap a fall from the top of the North Sea division. Lack of hitting probably did for their season. Paris won 10 in a row to make the most of London's collapse and secure their 6th playoff appearance in 7 seasons. Hamburg scored 13 runs in an inning in their 18-3 victory over Budapest on September 15th. Player Notes - Outside of Hubert Sittler's perfect game, there were a cluster of one-hitters. Sake de Weerd and Collins Gallagher both threw one for Barcelona and Raynaud Mori had one for Lisbon (on the same day as the perfect game). Gallagher was also impressive through the whole month of August, when his 4-0 record and 1.43 ERA won him the WL Pitcher of the Month trophy. There was also a pitching performance of note from Cosmo Popotas (Paris), who dismissed 31 Madrid Hawks without conceding a run as part of his club's 4-2 win in 15 innings. July's Pitching awards went to Paris reliever Mojslaw Szasz and Oslo starter Jame McIlwraith. The Hitting awards went to Barcelona's Stefan Fingerlos and Sofia rookie Helmuth Rainmayr. Fingerlos later won the same award for August and put together one of the best season's in EBL history. He won the batting title with a .361 average, hit 40 homers and drove in 131 runs. Ali Isosomppi (Madrid) was 4/4 with 3 HR and 6 RBI against Barcelona on July 15th as his team won 8-4. Bohdan Leibovic (Lisbon) won the WL Pitcher of the Month for July with a 6-0 month and looked a threat to break the single season record for wins when he won his 20th game in early August. He eventually had to settle for the WL Pitching Triple Crown with a 24-3 record, a 2.74 ERA and 243 strikeouts. He signed a contract extension in midseason to make him one of the highest paid pitchers in the game, He will get $26.6M over 6 years. The EL's Pitcher of the Month was Filip Kafyrin (Stockholm). The Hitter's of the Month were Orlando Ventura (Glasgow) and Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) - both of these were later felled by injuries (see below). Agatone Dimas (Helsinki) and Harlan McRea (Lisbon) both exceeded the 2000 hit mark and Thomas Meinert (Copenhagen) joined the 300 Home Run club. Meinert won the EL Hitter of the Month for August. The EL Pitcher of the Month for the last full month of the season was Hamburg reliever Lars Shanahan. Significant Injuries - Foppe Valckenburgh (Budapest) missed blocks of 4 weeks and 7 weeks with foot and rib injuries respectively. 22 year-old pitcher Philander Paraskevolopoulos (Athens) was injured in early August and might miss sime time next season with a back problem. He was 14-5 with a 2.51 ERA in his first full season. As mentioned above, Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) and Orlando Ventura (Glasgow) both missed the last 3 weeks of the season. They both had more than 30 homers on the season. Last edited by Craig Costello; 11-05-2008 at 05:21 PM. |
