1992 Preview

March 31st 1992 - The reigning champs have been dismantled to a degree over the offseason. Urs Kimmel, who was the star of Game 7, with 3 homers, has left in free agency (joining the Amsterdam Selects for $27.5M over 6 years). They have also lost Arsen Pentzopoulos and Ian Meoni in trades. It will be interesting to see if they can challenge to defend their title.

The Sofia Sting spent a lot of money in free-agency, bringing in veteran 1B Lukas Stoger and re-signing their own veteran star, Jacquy Gilbert. The other big contract was for Samuel Polach, who might threaten to break the stragnlehold of Thomas Meinert and Kaspar Ahlmann on the EL Homegrown Player of the Year award, after joining Budapest for $37.2M over 7 seasons.

With the loss of Stoger, the Paris Cyclones should be weaker this season. Maybe it is time for a team other than they and the Lisbon Renegades to represent the EL in the European League Series.

questions---when you copy your file for the European Championships, do you do it in game or copy the folder and rename it?

and, how do you get your EC to be played immediately after your EL season ends?(when I try something like this, it won't let me do it until the next spring)

I create a back up immediately after the season finishes and create a new game from this back-up.

I create a new league within the game and simply tell it to start the schedule on 4th November 1988 (or whatever). The default for the season start date is to have the year blank, but I always select the current year before proceeding.

Notes -

Barcelona won 20 games in May to go to the top of the Meditteranean division, one season after losing 101 games. They scored 12 runs in the 11th inning of a 15-4 win over Milan in the first week of the season.
London and reigning champions Moscow have both fired their manager in the first half of the season.

Player Notes -

Juliao Virgolino (Barcelona) has pitched 2 one-hitters in the first half. The games were against Lisbon on May 17th and Zurich on June 8th. The Iguanas won both games 2-0. There were also one-hitters for Pasqualino Terragni (Lisbon) and Panos Metrofanis (Vienna).
Berlin's Jordy Roux hit for the cycle as his team beat Warsaw 9-0 on April 22nd.
Eduardo Aguilar (Lisbon) hit an EBL record 4 home runs in a game against Zurich on April 28th. His team won 8-2.
Salmund Jaerbyn (Vienna) and Gustaf Bashe (Helsinki) won the Hitter of the Month awards in April. A reliever - Zarek Radziwila (Brussels) - won the WL Pitcher of the month award, with the EL award going to Joris Sonntag (Sofia).
Theo Brittain (Madrid) hit his 300th career home run on May 1st. He was joined in the 300 club by Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) in June.
There were a number of 7 RBI performances in the first half. Andreas Edblom (Amsterdam) drove in all of his team's runs in a 9-7 loss to Paris. Raquel Ferrobeiro (Paris) drove in 7 as his team beat Milan 17-6. Samuel Polach (Budapest) hit a three run homer and then a walk off Grand Slam to beat Prague 11-7 on May 24th.
34 year-old Bernard Wulker (Prague) reched the 2000 hit milestone on May 26th on his way to claiming the EL Hitter of the Month award. His WL counterpart was Stefan Kowelski (Glasgow). The Pitchers of the Month were Klement Follerup (Vienna) and Arnold Wert (Berlin).

Significant Injuries -

Young star Raynaud Mori (Lisbon) injured himself in mid-April and will miss the season.
Herman Guzicki (Paris), who won 19 games in 1991, won't be back until late July after injuring his back in April.

Prague won 10 in a row to move into serious contention. They will have a one-game playoff with Athens to decide the division winner and therefore the playoff match-ups.
Berlin looked to have the Baltic division sewn up but lost 14 of 15 to let the other teams back in.
Stockholm and Moscow both scored 10 runs ina n inning on July 11th.
Lisbon won 12 in a row to clinch the division title. At the same time Helsinki lost 10 in a row to lose any chance they had of the playoffs.
Dublin, Glasgow and Paris all won on the last day to cement their positions and secure their playoff berths.

Player Notes -

Arnaud Gros (Paris) doubled his season total with a three home run game on July 8th.
Twelve different winners of the monthly awards. The hitters were - Raul Marroquin (Dublin), Salmund Jaerbyn (Vienna), Gilbert Wamelink (Glasgow), Gage McMahan (Athens), Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) and Foppe Valckenburgh (Budapest), who hit .407 with 16 homers in August. The pitchers were - Pasqualino Terragni (Lisbon), Alexander Schimpf (Paris), Bohdan Leibovic (Lisbon), Jesus Ruiz (Warsaw), Ben McAuliffe (Budapest) and Jens Fetterlein (Copenhagen).
Christer Laundsen (Barcelona) had back to back 2 homer games in July.
Tobias Handeland (Athens) threw a no-hitter against Copenhagen, he did give up a run though thanks to 6 walks.
Patrick Lacriox (Hamburg) and Lukas Happ (Milan) both passed the 2000 hit mark.
Tahvo Ahonen (Madrid) was one hit batter away from a perfect game against Zurich on August 7th.
Jesus Ortiz (Budapest) had a 3 homer game against Warsaw on August 11th.
Fabio Quinhones (Madrid) had 8 RBI in a 13-0 win over Milan on August 12th.
Artemis Vlakhou (Oslo) was 5/5 with 3 doubles, 2 homers and 7 RBI against Budapest on August 20th.
Malcolm Kennedy (Dublin) threw 3 shutouts in a row late in the season.

Significant Injuries -

Tommy 'Fish' Woestenberg (Sofia) missed the last month of the season with an eye injury. He should be fit for the upcoming Euro Championships.
Vilhelm Hjelmslev (Sofia) also missed a large part of the end of the season.

Glasgow 1 Dublin 5 - Stuart Seaward pitched a complete game for the winners.

Dublin 4 Glasgow 2 - Malcolm Kennedy had his second quality start of the series to help the Wolfpack to advance.

Paris 4 Lisbon 3 (11) - Lisbon led 3-0, but Paris came back strongly.

Lisbon 0 Paris 7 - Russell Gilmartin had 2 homers and Alexander Schimpf held the Renegades to 1 hit over 8 innings.

Paris 3 Lisbon 0 - Lisbon outhit the Cyclones 10 to 8, but couldn't get anyone across the plate.

Berlin 4 Prague 5 - Berlin led 4-0 after 2 innings, but Prague scored 3 in the 4th and 2 in the 6th.
Prague 3 Berlin 7 - Constantino Deodato hit his 2nd homer of the series to lead the Dragons.

Berlin 7 Prague 5 - Constantino Deodato made it 4 homers in the series and 8 career dingers in 23 post-season games.

Athens 1 Copenhagen 0 - A great pitchers' duel betweem Vuk Sesely and Guy Brady went the way of the Avalanche.
Athens 0 Copenhagen 7 - Jens Fetterlein gave up 3 hits and 3 walks over 8 innings.
Copenhagen 4 Athens 8 - Copenhagen hit 3 homers, but they all came late. once the result was decided.
Copenhagen 4 Athens 11 - Copenhagen scored all their runs in the 1st, but the Armada couldn't hold off a hard charging Athens squad.


League Championship Series:

Paris 2 Dublin 3 - Malcolm Kennedy put in another good performance against his old team.
Paris 2 Dublin 9 - Dublin got 3 runs in the 1st, 5th and 6th innings.
Dublin 2 Paris 3 - Demetrio Morbidelli hit two solo homers for Dublin, but his team-mates didn't help out at all.
Dublin 9 Paris 5
Dublin 3 Paris 4 (10) - Dublin tied the game with 3 runs in the 8th, but Paris got the winning run thanks to back-to-back 2-out doubles by Emil Srnicek and Armando Landrim.
Paris 2 Dublin 6 - Raul Marroquin and Juriaan Lindeman homered for the Wolfpack.

Athens 2 Berlin 4
Athens 3 Berlin 4 - Athens got 3 runs in the 5th to get back to within 1, but they couldn't add to their score in crunch time.
Berlin 1 Athens 2 - Daniel Keurost got both runs for the Avalanche, including the game-winner on Philippe Martin's sacrifice fly in the 9th.
Berlin 7 Athens 1 - Shurik Chanysev pitched a complete games for Berlin and Gunnar Rippner hit 3 doubles.
Berlin 9 Athens 3 - Berlin make it back to the ELS after a one-year break.

Two evenly matched teams produced an excellent series. Dublin looked to have game 7 under control until they chose to pinch hit for Malcolm Kennedy in the bottom of the 8th with the bases loaded and two outs and a 3-1 lead. The pinch hitter made an out and relief pitcher Francisco Barriere loaded the bases, walked in a run then gave up a triple to Gerald Carnini.

Berlin won their third title in the last 4 seasons.

1992 European Championships Preview

October 26th 1992 -The powers that be have decided upon a new format for the 1992 tournament. They hope to cut out a few uncompetetive games by making the tournament a two-tier affair.

The bottom 3 teams from each group last time round (Poland, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Belgium, Scotland and England) have been banished to 'Division B' where they will play each other for the chance to appear in the top flight in 1996. This leaves 16 teams in 'Division A', who will be drawn into two groups of 8 and proceed from there. Each team will play all of the others in their group 6 times (giving a 42 game schedule) with the top two proceeding to the knockout stages.

The bottom team in each group will be relegated to Division B for 1996 with the top two from Division B this time round being called up to replace them. Division B will be a simple round robin with the teams playing each other 8 times (giving 40 games).

The draw for Division A is as follows.

This league is extremely well done and the story is a real joy to read. The uniforms are beautiful, and cool uniforms, I think, really help make a fun league even more fun to play.

I've been thinking of setting up a European League, with just a simple 3-tier minor league system.

Perhaps you would consider posting your league as a quickstart on Padresfan's site? I'm sure a lot of people would want to play it.

Ireland Hold On To Title

December 23rd 1992 - After a slow start, the Irish team picked up steam and proceeded to comfortably defend their European title, becoming the first team to do so in the process.

Notes -

France started with 4 straight wins and when they shut out Ireland in three consecutive contests, they had established a 3 game lead in Group A over the Irish and the Czech Republic after 12 games.
Denmark had a mid-season tear, winning 9 of 10 to pull within 1 game of the French and move ahead of the Czechs and Irish.
France's loss in Prague gave them a 20-10 record (and a 16-2 road record) and they still led Group A, but they then lost a series in Denmark and Ireland's 7 wins in a row moved them to the top of the Group with Denmark just behind, which is how it stayed.
In Group B, Spain started 11-1 and were never in danger of missing out.
Finland, Sweden and Austria always seemed to lose at the wrong time and no team was able to pull clear of the others. On the last day both the Finns and Swedes suffered a reverse and they had to have a one-game playoff for the honour of facing Ireland.
Norway were favourites to be relagated in Group B from early on and fulfilled that promise. The race in Group A was much tighter, but Greece lost 7 in a row to finish the touranament and will be in Division B in 1996.
Poland and Switzerland both had a comfortable lead in Division B at the half-way stage and could even afford to take their foot off the pedal as the tournament wound down.
The longest game of the tournament was Norway's 7-6 win over Sweden in 19 innings.
The highest score and biggest inning came in Austria's 21-0 win over the Swedes. They scored 11 times in the 6th inning.

Player Notes -

Raul Marroquin (Spain) had a 4/4 day with 2 home runs in his team's early 5-2 win over Russia. He ended the regular schedule with an astonishing 18 homers in 41 games played.
Denmark's Klement Thunmark hit for the cycle in his team's 11-2 win over Portugal, but later suffered a major injury (more below).
In the 19 inning game, Gustaf Bashe (Sweden) went 6/8, but ended up on the losing side even though Norway left 30 men on base.
Pancho Martinez (Spain) had the best pitching performance of the tournament with a one-hitter against Hungary in a 6-0 win. Some other notable performances were a four-hitter by Raynaud Mori (Italy), 11 strikeouts in a loss by Anibal Escamilla (Spain), a two-hitter by Adrik Selifanov (Russia) in a 1-0 win over Finland and 13 Ks by Collins Gallagher (Ireland) against Italy.
22 year-old C Panas Ishenin (Russia), who is only in A-level ball, went 4/5, with a double, a homer and 7 RBI in a 13-4 win against Hungary.
Stuart Seaward (Ireland) led Group A in wins (7), ERA (2.32) and strikeouts (66).

Significant Injuries -

This tournament was a bit more atrittional than other Euro Championships have been.
Nicodemus Theothanou (Greece) missed a couple of weeks early on, but he was back in tow for the Greek's disastrous collapse into Division B.
France lost their closer, Christian Michel (38 saves for Athens in 1992, 11 in 13 games for France, 1 ER in 10.2 IP), for the tournament just about when they started losing their lead in Group A.
Michel, along with the following, will be missing a portion of time in the 1993 EBL season (EBL team in brackets) - Klement Thunmark (Dublin), Filip Yalovoi (Madrid), Arhippa Karjalainen (Helsinki), Anibal Escamilla (Hamburg), Klement Follerup (Vienna). Follerup will probably not be able to suit up at all next season.

1993 Preview

March 31st 1993 - The Berlin Dragons can probably legitimately call themselves the first dynasty of the EBL. Their win in the 1992 European League Series gave them three titles in four seasons and their four titles overall is twice as many as the next best team. All eyes will be on them to see if they can make it four titles in five and extend the EL's winning streak to 5 years.

They made a decent pick up in the offseason of Artemis Vlakhou in free-agency. He might struggle for playing time behind Gunnar Rippner, but he averaged nearly 20 homers a season in his 6 full years in Oslo.

Elsewhere in free-agency a couple of also-ran EBL franchises made the biggest moves. The London Crocs signed 3-time WL Pitcher of the Year, Alexander Schimpf, to a 5-year, $21.7M deal in the hopes of turning around their fortunes. The Zurich Jesters made three interesting acquisitions in Eduardo Aguilar, Francisco Pena and Joakim Tronstad (the last two both being heavily involved in Barcelona's turnaround last season).

The best hitter on the market was undoubtedly Raul Marroquin and he got paid to the tune of $24M over 4 years by the Barcelona Iguanas.

Not a lot of activity on the trade market. The two biggest names changing teams as part of swaps were Claudio Lwenholm and Lage Sahlstein. Lwenholm hasn't been the player he once was since he first left Amsterdam in free agency and less than 2 seasons after getting him back via trade, the Selects have shipped him onto Madrid for infielder Luis Diaz. Sahlstein has been a middle of the road EBL perfomer, but a good showing for Sweden in the European Championships convinced Oslo to part with one of their better prospects for his services.

London's investment in the free-agency market has paid off to the tune of a lead in their division. They have been helped by last year's WL champions, Dublin, losing a fair portion of their big name players and having to rebuild and a slightly down season (so far) by Glasgow.
Helsinki won 21 games in May and it would be a big surprise if anyone outside of them, Berlin, Copenhagen and Sofia forced their way into the playoffs.
There was a new record set for the longest EBL game in history. Zurich beat Vienna 8-7 in 24 innings. After going hitless in his first 10 at bats, Ricardo Wening finished the game with a home run at 2:04am local time.

Player Notes -

Artemis Vlakhou (Berlin) made a good early impression for his new team, hitting 4 home runs and having 9 RBIs in his first 5 games as a Dragon.
The best pitching performance so far of 1993 came early on when Adrien Pierre (Paris) threw a one-hitter against Milan.
Two exciting young players would appear to be favourites for the WL Hitter of the Year award. Barcelona's Stefan Fingerlos and Nicodemus Theothanou of Brussels have both won a monthly award so far this season and have pretty impressive stat lines. Theothanou is having a particularly good year, hitting .358 with 24 home runs and 58 RBIs so far.
The EL Hitter of the month awards went to two veterans from the Copenhagen Armada. Thomas Meinert won in April and Rudolf Tuhina won in May.
Some unknown names have won the Pitcher of the Month award this season. Raynaud Mori (Lisbon) is reasonably well known, but rookie Cosmo Popotas (Paris) is obviously a new name and Karcsi Csontas (Stockholm) and Francis Heeffer (Helsinki) are not exactly famous either.
There was a battle to see who would become the first man to 200 EBL wins, which was eventually won by Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin). When he got to 200, Malcolm Kennedy (Dublin) was on 199 and he himself passed the landmark just over a week later.
There were also three more players who passed the 2000 hit milestone - Ony Prosurnya (Moscow), Francis Gautier (Copenhagen) and Giacomo Grappasonni (Barcelona). Grapassonni is having the season of his life at 37, hitting .358 with 10 homers thus far.

Significant Injuries -

Athens CF Arsen Pentzopoulos was injured in the first month of the season and will be out all year.
Jason Dyer (Amsterdam) missed 6 weeks from the end of April.
Helmuth Seipel (Budapest) saw his first season with a new team cut short thanks to a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament. His 4-8 record with a 5.12 ERA wasn't really paying off the investment anyway.

Sittler Is Perfect

September 22nd 1993 - Prague Eliminators starter Hubert Sittler yesterday became the second man in European Baseball League history to pitch a perfect game.



The 30 year-old lefty threw 85 pitches, striking out 5 Moscow Blue Sox to enter the record books. For the season, Sittler is 14-14 with a 3.42 ERA.

The win improves Prague's record to 78-81, but they will not be taking part in the upcoming playoffs.

London lost on the last day of the season to miss out on the playoffs and cap a fall from the top of the North Sea division. Lack of hitting probably did for their season.
Paris won 10 in a row to make the most of London's collapse and secure their 6th playoff appearance in 7 seasons.

Outside of Hubert Sittler's perfect game, there were a cluster of one-hitters. Sake de Weerd and Collins Gallagher both threw one for Barcelona and Raynaud Mori had one for Lisbon (on the same day as the perfect game). Gallagher was also impressive through the whole month of August, when his 4-0 record and 1.43 ERA won him the WL Pitcher of the Month trophy.
There was also a pitching performance of note from Cosmo Popotas (Paris), who dismissed 31 Madrid Hawks without conceding a run as part of his club's 4-2 win in 15 innings.
July's Pitching awards went to Paris reliever Mojslaw Szasz and Oslo starter Jame McIlwraith. The Hitting awards went to Barcelona's Stefan Fingerlos and Sofia rookie Helmuth Rainmayr. Fingerlos later won the same award for August and put together one of the best season's in EBL history. He won the batting title with a .361 average, hit 40 homers and drove in 131 runs.
Ali Isosomppi (Madrid) was 4/4 with 3 HR and 6 RBI against Barcelona on July 15th as his team won 8-4.
Bohdan Leibovic (Lisbon) won the WL Pitcher of the Month for July with a 6-0 month and looked a threat to break the single season record for wins when he won his 20th game in early August. He eventually had to settle for the WL Pitching Triple Crown with a 24-3 record, a 2.74 ERA and 243 strikeouts. He signed a contract extension in midseason to make him one of the highest paid pitchers in the game, He will get $26.6M over 6 years.
The EL's Pitcher of the Month was Filip Kafyrin (Stockholm). The Hitter's of the Month were Orlando Ventura (Glasgow) and Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) - both of these were later felled by injuries (see below).
Agatone Dimas (Helsinki) and Harlan McRea (Lisbon) both exceeded the 2000 hit mark and Thomas Meinert (Copenhagen) joined the 300 Home Run club. Meinert won the EL Hitter of the Month for August.
The EL Pitcher of the Month for the last full month of the season was Hamburg reliever Lars Shanahan.

Significant Injuries -

Foppe Valckenburgh (Budapest) missed blocks of 4 weeks and 7 weeks with foot and rib injuries respectively.
22 year-old pitcher Philander Paraskevolopoulos (Athens) was injured in early August and might miss sime time next season with a back problem. He was 14-5 with a 2.51 ERA in his first full season.
As mentioned above, Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) and Orlando Ventura (Glasgow) both missed the last 3 weeks of the season. They both had more than 30 homers on the season.

Barcelona 7 Paris 6 - Lars Almquis was 3/3 with a triple and a homer.
Barcelona 6 Paris 2 - Richard Wolton pitched a complete game for the Iguanas.
Paris 5 Barcelona 6 (13) - Relief pitcher Rodrigo Stemberg singled home the winning run.

Brussels 5 Lisbon 9 - Paulus Penning hit 2 homers for the Renegades.
Brussels 5 Lisbon 7 - Lisbon came back from an early 4-1 deficit to push the Hitmen to the brink.
Lisbon 3 Brussels 2 - Nicodemus Theothanou homered in all 3 games but couldn't prevent the sweep.

Copenhagen 10 Sofia 4 - Alexander Parnevik hit 2 bombs and scored 3 runs to lead the Armada.

Sofia 3 Copenhagen 1 - Orla Junge won the game and series with 8 innings of 5 hit ball.

Helsinki 3 Berlin 4 - Salmund Hjerstedt had a pinch-hit to win it in the 9th.

Berlin 0 Helsinki 2 - Kristian Karlsson allowed only 3 hits and a walk over 8 innings.
Berlin 11 Helsinki 8 - Jay Kerr was 4/4 with 5 RBI and 2 runs as the reigning champs get through.


League Championship Series:

Barcelona
3 Lisbon 0 - Collins Gallagher shut out Lisbon through 8 innings and homers from Raul Marroquin and Giacomo Grappasonni were enough.
Barcelona 1 Lisbon 2 - The Iguanas were held to 3 hits by Pasqualino Terragni and two relievers.
Lisbon 4 Barcelona 1 - Aside from Raul Marroquin's homer, Raynaud Mori held Barcelona in check.
Lisbon 2 Barcelona 9 - Raul Marroquin hit another two bombs, giving him 4 for the series.
Lisbon 6 Barcelona 7 (12) - Christer Laundsen drove in the winning run with a swinging bunt infield hit with 2 outs.
Barcelona 6 Lisbon 5 - Lisbon led 5-2 until the top of the 9th, when 3 walks and 3 hits put the Iguanas in front.

Sofia 5 Berlin 6 - Sofia scored twice in the 9th to tie it a 5, but Berlin responded with Gunnar Rippner plating the winning run.
Sofia 1 Berlin 3 - Aras Tansel scored two runs, including a solo homer.
Berlin 2 Sofia 3 - Sofia got the winning run in the 9th thans to two walks and two errors.
Berlin 5 Sofia 6 - The Sting took an early lead and every time Berlin pulled close, they added insurance runs.
Berlin 1 Sofia 2 - The Dragons outhit Sofia 10 to 7, but couldn't make it pay.
Sofia 3 Berlin 1 - Sofia had 3 solo home runs and Orla Junge was very good through 8 innings to give us an ELS with two teams who have both never been there before.


European League Series:

Game 1 starters - Barcelona: Roberto Lopez (14-12, 4.59 ERA, 1.43 WHIP), Sofia: Vladimir Karakash (11-14, 4.36 ERA, 1.36 WHIP)

Wasn't as close as the final scoreline suggests. Really only excellent
defense kept Barcelona in shouting distance. They had two outfield
assists to prevent large innings and Christer Laundsen was a perfect
3 for 3 nailing base stealers.

Barcelona struggled early against Ludovico Montero, but came back
into it. They loaded the bases in the 8th and 10th without reward.
Sofia had runners on second and third with no outs in the 10th, so
the homer wasn't as dramatic as it might have been.
Game 3 starters - Sofia: Orla Junge (15-12, 3.55 ERA, 1.29 WHIP), Barcelona: Richard Wolton (18-7, 4.38 ERA, 1.47 WHIP)

Barcelona starter Richard Wolton looked in control despite giving
up an early homer, but back-to-back-to-back extra base hits in
the 8th knocked him out of the game and put Sofia up for good.

One of the most lopsided European League Series ever is finished
with on the most lopsided European League Series games. Barcelona
struggled to get anybody out through the first three innings and
couldn't get a hit until the 6th.
