1994 Preview
March 31st 1994 - Reigning champs Sofia have not made any changes to their successful formula for the new season. They have a number of outstanding young players and were able to keep hold of all of them for the 1994 campaign. The biggest free-agent names were probably Salmund Jaerbyn and Yoann Bernard. Jaerbyn has moved to Brussels from Vienna and Bernard has joined last years WL champions, the Barcelona Iguanas. The Iguanas signed Bernard as a replacement for Giacomo Grapasonni, who joined Stockholm as a free agent. As well as losing Bernard, the Paris Cyclones also lost Ota Hospodar (to London). The Cyclones might be due for a down year, considering that they also lost Alexander Schimpf last season. Last year's EL Hitter of the Year, Rudolf Tuhina, was also a free agent and he joined Oslo for $15.6M over 3 years. The Metros also picked up another big named veteran in Harlan McRea, who isn't the player he once was, but should still contribute. There were also a couple of big trades in the off-season. Former European League Series MVP, Gunnar Rippner, has been moved to Moscow, with Berlin getting 38 year-old Steve 'The Wolf' Moynan in return. In the other big trade Brussels made room in their outfield for Jaerbyn by sending Cheung 'The China Pole' Ying to Paris in return for starter Sippo Lahti. Another intriguing season of baseball awaits. |

agreed
I stole some of your uniforms and created a solo league---Trans-Atlantic Baseball League...16 North American teams and 16 European teams in different leagues...I'm in season 4 and I'm enjoying it(I'm debating about having a nation competition like your EC...but with 15 teams of players to choose from the USA would probably dominate it) |

This is a good league you have set up.
Do you think you could post a list of the winners and runners up of all your seasons so far so people can look at a glance at who's doing well and who isn't? I started an English league on 2007 and you've inspired me to do an improved OOTP 9 Great Britain version! I might even post some of the results. Keep up the league and the good work mate

1994 All-Star Break
June 22nd 1994 - Lisbon look like the class of the league this year. That is they can avoid injuries which seem to be happening a lot this season. Code:
WL North Sea EL Baltic
W L GB W L GB
Brussels 43 32 - Copenhagen 37 38 -
Paris 43 32 - Helsinki 36 39 1
London 37 38 6 Hamburg 35 40 2
Dublin 32 43 11 Stockholm 34 41 3
Amsterdam 29 46 14 Oslo 32 43 5
Glasgow 29 46 14 Berlin 30 45 7
WL Meditteranean EL Black Sea
W L GB W L GB
Lisbon 50 25 - Prague 45 30 -
Zurich 46 29 4 Sofia 45 30 -
Madrid 38 37 12 Moscow 41 34 4
Milan 35 40 15 Warsaw 39 36 6
Barcelona 34 41 16 Athens 38 37 7
Vienna 34 41 16 Budapest 38 37 7
Madrid scored 6 in the top of the 1st against Lisbon on April 10th, but they lost the game 11-6. Amsterdam beat Barcelona 10-8 in 20 innings on May 11th in the longest game of the season so far. Last year's WL champs have had lots of other losses to go along with it. They have suffered a few injuries and their pitching is dismal this year. Paris scored 12 runs in the 7th of a 12-11 win over Brussels on May 4th. The whole of the Black Sea division has a winning record, whereas the whole of the Baltic division has a losing record. Berlin fired their GM in May after a 13-26 start, but they are still actually in the title race. Player Notes - Some great veteran players have reached important milestones. A.J. Meresmaa (Hamburg) and Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) both passed 2000 hits. Jesus Ruiz (Warsaw) became the third man to reach 200 EBL wins. Philippe Martin (Athens) clobbered his 300th homer on May 1st, the same day that he was named as April EL Hitter of the Month. Stockholm's Alexander Parnevik was 3/4 with 2 HR and 7 RBI in his team's 14-5 win over Budapest in the second week of the season. This RBI output has been topped by Josef Schmollinger (Vienna) who drove in 8 after a 3/3 day with a double, a homer and 4 runs scored in a 17-7 win over Barcelona. There have been three one-hitters in the first half of the season. The successful pitchers were Bernhard Grondgrens (Zurich), Francis Maze (Berlin) and Hubert Sittler (Prague). Nicodemus Theothanou (Brussels) had an injury early in the season (see below). In one of his comeback games, he scored 5 of his teams 18 runs in a win over Madrid. He followed this game up with a second consecutive two-homer contest. April's WL Hitter of the Month was Bartolomej Burik (Zurich). The Pitching Award winners were Egbert 'El Kapitan' Kapitan (Brussels) and Brad Mardment (Budapest). May's award winners were - WL Hitter - Romochka Wider (Lisbon) - .378/6/26 EL Hitter - Thomas Meinert (Copenhagen) - .407/6/19 WL Pitcher - Cosmo Popotas (Paris) - 4-1/2.35 EL Pitcher - Jesus Ruiz (Warsaw) - 4-0/1.53 The two EL winners have now taken home 14 monthly awards between them, with Ruiz picking up 8 of them. Significant Injuries - Gage McMahan (Athens) missed the first month of the season with a groin problem. A knee injury kept Nicodemus Theothanou (Brussels) out for 4 weeks early on. Klement Thunmark (Dublin) injured his shoulder in April and will be out for all of the 1994 season. 1993's WL Hitter of the Year, Stefan Fingerlos (Barcelona), missed 5 weeks because of a bad back. The Iguanas also had injuries to Raul Marroquin and Vojislav Davidovic to cope with. Hamburg's young closer Lars Shanahan is out for the season with a back injury. His ERA was 1.74 in the month that he was able to play. Lisbon's Pantalian Lobeiro is also out for the season with an elbow injury. Ianos Cukar (Warsaw) will miss 8 weeks after the break with a bad back. |

No really tight races this season. Zurich won 21 games in July to move into pole position for the first WL wildcard spot. Glasgow won 14 games in a row in August, but were too far out to make any real noise. Athens won on the last day to keep Hamburg out of the post-season. Amsterdam had one of the most exciting wins of the season as they scored 4 in the 8th and 5 in the 9th to beat London 10-9. Bemus Korais homered in both the 8th and 9th innings. Lisbon scored 10 runs in an inning as they beat London 16-1 on August 6th. Player Notes - Samuel Polach (Budapest) got the second half of the season going with a 6 RBI performance against Stockholm. This was topped later in the season by a 7 RBI day from Jimmy O'Brien (Copenhagen), which was itself beaten by Lewis MacHutchin's 8 RBI day for Dublin against London in a 20-6 win. Paulus Penning (Lisbon) and Mang Vogel (Brussels) also had 7 RBI games later in the season. Zurich's Joakim Tronstad was 6-for-6 in his team's 8-7 win against Brussels in late June. There were 12 different award winners again. The hitters were - Nicodemus Theothanou (Brussels), Teemu Tiilikainen (Amsterdam), Paulus Penning (Lisbon), Vilfred Krak (Warsaw), Czieslaw Lubelsky (Budapest) and Daniel Keurost (Athens). The winning pitchers were - Raynaud Mori (Lisbon), Laurent Bois (Zurich), Alexander Schimpf (London), Anibal Escamila (Hamburg), Shurik Chanyshev (Berlin) and Rory Begley (Hamburg). Begley passed 200 wins during the season. A landmark also achieved by James McIlwraith (Brussels) Thomas Meinert (Copenhagen) became the first EBL player to pass 2500 hits. He finished the year with 2586. Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) was himself the first man to pass 400 Home Runs on his career. Artemis Vlakhou (Stockholm) topped off a 5/5 day by hitting the game winning 3-run homer in a 5-3 win over Athens on July 14th. Bernhard Grondgrens (Zurich) threw an 11 inning shutout against Paris on July 23rd as the Jesters won 1-0. A couple of mid-level stars were traded for each other in July. Sander Klaeboe left Olso to join Stockholm, with Alberik Landgre going the other way. Clodio Picano (Helsinki) was the only man to hit a cycle in 1994. The only man to hit 3 homers in a game was Philippe Martin (Athens). There were quite a few one-hitters late in the season, but they were all topped by Helmuth Seipel's no-hiter for Budapest against Berlin on September 14th. Significant Injuries - Ex-EL Pitcher of the Year, Jouni Hernesniemi (Helsinki), missed 5 weeks spanning all of July with a tricep problem. Vienna's Alois Freindametz missed 5 weeks with a back injury. Samuel Polach (Budapest) missed the last 4 weeks of the season. It was a similar story for Philander Paraskevopoulos (Athens), who should be back for the start of the playoffs for the Avalanche. |

1995 Preview
March 31st 1995 - The major news of the off-season is that Thomas Meinert's 9th EL Homegrown Player of the year award will probably be his last. The 37 year-old Meinert has signed a 2-year contract with the Stockholm Lumberjacks. He will be ineligible for the award whilst playing for any team other than Copenhagen. Sofia signed a veteran to add to their youngsters. Bernard Wulker joined from Prague for in excess of $10M over 2 seasons. It will be interesting to see if he can push Sofia to more titles. With a lack of star starters on the market a couple of third tier names got paid. Adrik Selifanov signed with Moscow for $9.7M over 2 seasons and Kristian Karlsson (third tier is probably a bit of a stretch for him) will earn $8.5M over 2 years with Dublin. No trades really worth mentioning, so expect Lisbon, Sofia and reigning champs Brussels to be the top teams again. |

1995 All-Star Break
June 22nd 1995 - A reasonably understated start to the new season in the EBL. Here's hoping for a build up to an incredible climax in the play-offs. Code:

Madrid 27 48 15 Moscow 30 45 15
Madrid and Copenhagen started as they meant to go on with only single figure wins (8 and 9 respectively) in the first month of the season. The Armada fired their GM in early June. Budapest won 20 games in May, which means they have won only 20 games in April and June combined. Paris also won 20 in May, whilst Helsinki were winning 21 in the month. Hamburg gave climbed back into the Baltic division race with a fantastic June. They have only lost 5 times so far this month. The wildest game of the season so far saw Brussels beat neighbours Amsterdam 14-12 in 18 innings. There was also a game in which Madrid scored 4 times in the top of the 13th inning only to see the Glasgow Stallions respond with 5 runs in their half of the 13th to win 7-6. Player Notes - Phil Cockx (Lisbon) hit 3 HR and picked up 7 RBI in his team's 16-12 victory over Dublin on April 5th. Paris' Fabien 'Sawmill' Lefebvre also had a 3 HR game in the first half. He led his team to a 7-4 win against Zurich by driving in 5 runs. Gunnar Rippner (Moscow) hit a walk-off 3-run homer against Warsaw on April 17th. The best pitching performance of the season so far is a one-hitter by Rafael Ferrugento (Zurich) against Milan, in which he struck out 8 Mud Cats. Brussels have picked up both WL Hitter of the Month awards so far. Salmund Jaerbyn won in April and Nicodemus Theothanou added to his personal silverware in May. Their EL couterparts were Clodio Picano (Helsinki) and Thomas Meinert (Stockholm), who had a stellar second month for his new club, going .389 with 10 homers. Malcolm Kennedy (Dublin) won the WL Pitcher of the Month in April with Philippe Da Silva (Berlin) taking the EL award. A reliever won the WL award in May - Thomas Espeland of Paris picked up 11 saves and 2 victories in the month. The EL's winner was Hubert Sittler (Prague). Lars Tommeras (Madrid) saw his consecutive save streak end at 48 in the first few weeks of the season. It is the second longest streak in EBL history. Bernard Wulker (Sofia) became the second man to pass the 2500 hit mark on June 13th. Ilija Kovacevic (Amsterdam) had a 6/6 day in his team's 15-6 win against London. Normally light-hitting Shortstop Joakim Tronstad (Zurich) hit 2 home runs and picked up 7 RBIs as the Jesters won 10-6 against Vienna on June 10th. Significant Injuries - Paulus Penning (Lisbon) missed a month early on. Raul Marroquin (Barcelona) wasn't having all that good a season, but he was threat to break out at any time. He will miss around three months in total with a elbow injury. He was hitting .273 with 3 homers in the middle of May when he picked up the injury. Richard Fabre (Vienna) will miss the whole season with an elbow complaint. He hit .325 through the first two months of the season. Last edited by Craig Costello; 12-05-2008 at 05:23 PM. |

1995 Final Standings
September 26th 1995 - A couple of tight-"ish" division races and the reigning champs miss out on a playoff spot. Code:
WL North Sea EL Baltic
W L GB W L GB
Dublin 94 68 - Helsinki 87 75 -
Glasgow 93 69 1 Oslo 79 83 8
Amsterdam 90 72 4 Stockholm 77 85 10
Brussels 89 73 5 Hamburg 73 89 14
Paris 88 74 6 Berlin 71 91 16
London 77 85 17 Copenhagen 60 102 27
WL Meditteranean EL Black Sea
W L GB W L GB
Lisbon 87 75 - Budapest 98 64 -
Milan 85 77 2 Warsaw 96 66 2
Zurich 77 85 10 Sofia 94 68 4
Vienna 74 88 13 Athens 84 78 14
Barcelona 60 102 27 Prague 80 82 18
Madrid 58 104 29 Moscow 73 89 25
The only real intrigue in the EL was which team would win the Black Sea division. Budapest came good in the last few weeks to clinch it. All three teams involved in the race were always going to be in the playoffs anyway. Zurich fired their manager just after the break and had a decent finish to the season, but were never a threat to make the post-season. Milan only finished 2 games back of Lisbon, but that was the closes they have been over the last 2 months. Brussels lost to London in 13 innings on the last day to confirm their elimination from the post-season. Vienna and London played a 20 inning game in July that was probably the highlight of both teams' season. Glasgow won 10 in a row in July and 21 total in the month to move to the top of their division. A position which they held onto fairly comfortably. They won a game against Brussels on August 5th by scoring 10 times in the 7th to win 11-6. Barcelona had possibly the worst month ever going 6-23 in July. They were also 4-19 in September. Player Notes - Teodor Zahradnicek (Moscow) hit a cycle in the first week after the All-Star break. There was another occurance of 12 different award winners in the second half. Most of the names were familiar. The hitters were - Romochka Wider (Lisbon), Fabien 'Sawmill' Lefebvre (Paris), Nicodemus Theothanou (Brussels), Samuel Polach (Budapest), Clodio Picano (Helsinki) and Flip van den Bosch (Sofia). The pitchers were - Max Schlotterbeck (Milan), Alexander Schimpf (London), Didier Lelievre (Brussels), Mirko Bukvajova (Stockholm), Brad Mardment (Budapest) and Vaino Saraste (Sofia). Veteran pitchers Yoan Lelievre (Budapest) and Stuart Seaward (Dublin) both reached the 200 win plateau. The best hitting performance of the second half belonged to Oslo's Kevn Trouve, who was 4/4 with a double and 2 home runs against Berlin. He drove in 7 runs in the Metros 11-6 win on July 11th. Philippe Gautier (Madrid) also had a 7 RBI day late in the season. Lukas Happ (Milan) became the 3rd man to reach 2500 hits in his EBL career. Phoenix Pappas (Athens) threw a two-hitter on September 18th against Berlin, in which he struck out 15 Dragon hitters. Significant Injuries - Malcolm Kennedy (Dublin) missed the last 2 months of the season with a herniated disc. The 36 year-old was in the middle of another superb season with a 13-5 record and a 2.97 ERA. He will be ready for the playoffs. Unfortunately Yoann Bernard (Barcelona) has had to retire with vision problems. The 29 year-old Frenchman was a career .292 hitter with 121 HR and 517 RBI to go along 280 SB. His career highlight was probably being named to the 1988 Euro Championship All Tournament Team. Last edited by Craig Costello; 12-14-2008 at 06:01 AM. |

Cvijic topped off his great day on the mound with an RBI single in the 7th to tie it up again and he was driven home by an Aren Rohrmann triple.
