1996 Preview

March 31st 1996 - An insane period of free-agency has highlighted the past offseason. The current EBL leaders in wins and home runs have changed teams and the two-time reigning WL Hitter of the Year was rewarded with the largest contract in EBL history.

The $8M per year that Nicodemus Theothanou will get is unprecedented in the EBL. The Barcelona Iguanas will hope that his addition can improve them from a 60-win team to a WL contender.

The Sofia Sting promise to be the scariest team for everyone in the EL with a line-up including Bernard Wulker, Marcal Assis, Tommy Woestenberg, Flip van den Bosch, Helmuth Rainmayr and now Paulus Penning.

Dublin lost homegrown boy and current career leader in wins Malcolm Kennedy to Madrid, but picked up the EBL's all time leader in home runs Vilfred Krak to make up for it. They also signed Eldwin Richter to take over the catching duties.

Ludwig Herzog escapes from Sofia, where he was stuck behind Woestenberg, to join the Paris Cyclones, whose main business of the off-season was re-signing Russell Gilmartin for $30.1M over 5 years.

The question is can anybody beat Sofia?

Notes -

Sofia were last in the Black Sea division at the end of April (soon to be replaced by Budapest after a 6-23 May). Their pitching has let them down badly and Paulus Penning is spending most games on the bench for his $6M per year.
Vienna and Madrid played a 19 inning game in May.
Amsterdam fired their manager after a 23-36 start.
Barcelona had a 19-3 run in May/June to put them well and truly on top of their division.
Moscow finished 16 games under .500 in 1995. They had a 22-7 record in May to pull clear of their division rivals. Their pitching has been the thing that has propelled them to such a good start.
Berlin won 20 games in May to move to the top of the Baltic division.
Prague are 4-14 so far in June.

Player Notes -

Stefan Fingerlos (Barcelona) is threatening to break all sorts of records. He has won both WL Hitter of the Month awards and is currently at .401/25/84. He his hitting 37 points higher, has 5 more homers and 21 more RBIs than anyone else in the league. His best game was a 3/3 day with 2 homers and 8 RBI in a 13-3 win against Brussels.
Gustaf Bashe (Helsinki) has emulated Fingerlos by winning both monthly hitting awards so far and he is second in the league with his .364 average.
The Pitcher of the Month awards have been awarded to Bohdan Leibovic (Lisbon), Mark Dumbreck (Barcelona), Bernt Muelengracht (Moscow) and Shurik Chanyshev (Berlin).
Glasgow's Jamie Corsie hit for the cycle on April 12th in his team's 11 inning 4-3 win over Lisbon. He later had a 22 game hitting streak.
Arnold Schiff (London) threw a one-hitter against Vienna on April 22nd. The same team were one-hit by Jake Malloch (Glasgow) who didn't walk anybody and struck out 11 in a 4-0 win on May 11th. Schiff also threw a two-hitter against Milan on May 13th. Glasgow has a second one-hitter on the season with Ferdynand Jaruzelski quelling Lisbon on May 17th.
Marcos Gutierrez (Warsaw) struck out 14 Athens hitters in a 3-0 win on June 1st.
Lucas Souter (Amsterdam) had 7 RBI in his team's 11-5 win over Madrid. Marcal Assis (Sofia) also had a 7 RBI day, but his team lost 12-10 to Copenhagen.

Significant Injuries -

Pasqualino Terragni (Lisbon) was injured in the first week of the season and is only just back in the rotation.
Richard Fabre (Vienna) won't be available for France in the upcoming European Championships because of a cheek injury. He is going to be out for a year after being hit in the face by a pitch he fouled off.
Last season's WL Pitcher of the Year, Marquise Briatore (Milan), injured his knee in May and won't be back until the middle of July. His record this season was 4-3 with a 3.25 ERA.
Bernt Meulengracht (Moscow) had his fantastic start to the season cut short by a bicep injury. He was 7-0 with a 2.39 ERA in late May when it happened. He will not be available for Denmark in the Euros.
Foppe Valckenburgh (Budapest) is having his worst season ever (.239/4/21), so he will be hoping that his 5 weeks off due to a knee injury will kick start his season.

September 26th 1996 - A very evenly contested season finished with a tense final day.

Notes -

Berlin were 9 games under .500 for August and September allowing the rest of the Baltic division to catch them up. Oslo looked favourites to take the division, but they lost 5 in a row in the last few weeks and then lost 2-1 to Hamburg on the final day to let Helsinki nip in to take the title. The Diesel were 15-8 in September and 9-2 over their last 11 games.
Oslo's last day loss also meant that Prague held onto the last Wildcard spot despite losing to Helsinki.
The last day interest in the WL was over the last Wildcard spot. Dublin lost 2 out of 3 to London to drop out of contention, but they beat the Crocs on the final day of the season to allow Glasgow to return to the playoffs to defend their title as they beat Amsterdam 2-0.
Sofia led the EBL in runs scored, but finished under .500 thanks to their pitching. They won 5 in a row in early September that actually had them in contention for a Wildcard spot, but they couldn't maintain the momentum.
Budapest and Brussels both made changes at the top as they fell to the bottom of their divisions.

Player Notes -

Stefan Fingerlos (Barcelona) was less productive over the second half of the season and couldn't take the Triple Crown, but he still a shoe in for the WL Hitter of the Year award with a .342/40/146 season.
There were 7 one-hitters in the second half of the season. None was more important than Ferdynand Jaruzelski's on the last day to take Glasgow to a 2-0 win over the Selects and into the playoffs.
Agatone Dimas (Helsinki) and Giacomo Grapassonni (Athens) both passed the 2500 hit mark, making 5 players now with at least that many hits.
Mauro Langushi (Amsterdam) and Heyg Brugger (Copenhagen) both hit cycles in the last two months of the season.
Malcolm Kennedy (Madrid) became the first man to win 250 games in the EBL. On the day that he got to the target Jesus Ruiz was on 241 wins and Kaspar Ahlmann was on 239.
Sofia got Pulus Penning into the everdyay lineup by trading away young 1B Clement Auger to Stockholm in return for Gottfried Helfkin.
Former #1 draft pick Elpidio 'Radar' Janes (Milan) struck out 16 Hitmen in a 5-2 win on August 12th.
Lewis MacHutchin (Dublin) hit in 30 straight games late in the season.
The same old story of 12 different award winners in the second half. The hitters were - Vilfred Krak (Dublin), Stefan Kowelski (Glasgow), Giustino Spoletiani (Brussels), Tommy 'Fish' Woestenberg (Sofia), Sondre Nyhuus (Copenhagen) and Czieslaw Lubelsky (Budapest). The pitchers were - Bohdan Leibovic (Lisbon), Arnold Schiff (London), Alexander Schimpf (London), Vuk Sesely (Athens), Antonn Bila (Budapest) and Johann Reinertsen (Warsaw).

Significant Injuries -

In terms of the playoffs the injury to Nicodemus Theothanou (Barcelona), who is out for the next 2 weeks is big.
There were a few injuries that promise to have an impact on the upcoming European Championships by keeping out key players. Alexander Parnevik (Copenhagen) was injured in late June and won't be able to suit up for Sweden. Jake Malloch (Glasgow) was 11-7 with a 3.70 ERA when his rotator cuff gave out in August, meaning Scotland will have to do without him. Cosmo Popotas (Paris) is out for the best part of a year with a tricep injury, which means he won't be able to play for Greece.
The worst injury of the year was suffered by Tage Jepsen (Copenhagen). The 41 year-olds elbow injury forced him to retire with a lifetime 4.42 ERA.

1996 Playoffs

October 17th 1996

Wildcard Round:

Glasgow 6 Barcelona 5 (10) - Glasgow tied it in the 9th thanks to a balk. Barcelona loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th, but went popout-popout-popout to send the game to extras. Gilbert Wamelink drove in the winning run.
Glasgow 2 Barcelona 3 - Barthelemy Luciani tied the game with his second RBI in the 9th, then substitute Alex de Ritter dropped a groundball allowing Raul Marroquin to score the winning run.
Barcelona 0 Glasgow 8 - Ferdynand Jaruzelski pitched a three-hitter.
Barcelona 3 Glasgow 2 - Stefan Fingerlos' first hit of the series was an RBI double in the 5th tha gave the scoreline it's final look.
Glasgow 6 Barcelona 2 - The Stallions scored 5 times on 7 hits in the 5th to take control.

Zurich 2 Paris 1 - Rafael Ferrugento and 3 relievers held Paris to 6 hits.
Zurich 10 Paris 4 - Three Jesters hit homers.
Paris 14 Zurich 5
Paris 3 Zurich 1 - Francis Heeffer pitched 8 strong innings for another road vicotry in the series.
Zurich 8 Paris 7 - Another road win sees Zurich into the WLCS.

Athens 1 Helsinki 14 - Gustaf Bashe hit 2 homers and Guy Brady pitched a complete game.
Athens 2 Helsinki 8 - Jouni Hernesniemi pitched a complete game.
Helsinki 9 Athens 6 - Athens scored 6 times in the 8th to tie up but Helsinki responded with 3 in the 9th to sweep through.

Prague 5 Moscow 8 - Teodor Zahradnicek had a double and a homer and 4 RBI.
Prague 3 Moscow 1 - Fabian Weisenbrantz allowed only 5 hits over 8 innings.
Moscow 1 Prague 0 - Markus Virta shout out Prague through 7 innings on 5 hits and a walk.
Moscow 0 Prague 3 - Bedric Hudak hit a 3 run homer in the 8th and Hubert Sittler and 2 relievers held Moscow to 5 hits.
Prague 9 Moscow 3 - Fabian Weisenbrantz allowed 5 hits and a walk over 8 innings.


League Championship Series:

Zurich 0 Glasgow 1 - Ferdynand Jaruzelski held Zurich to one hit and a walk over 8 innings.
Zurich 1 Glasgow 8 - Julio Espinoza doubled and homered and Julio Ruiz held the Jesters to 2 hits over 7 innings.
Glasgow 12 Zurich 3 - Glasgow got 8 unearned runs in the first to make it a non-contest.
Glasgow 6 Zurich 2 - The Stallions sweep the Jesters to set up a chance to repeat.

Prague 2 Helsinki 4 - Helmuth Buchleitner pitched 8 strong innings for the Diesel.
Prague 3 Helsinki 2 - Sergio Esquibel was 3/5 with the game winning RBI double and a triple.
Helsinki 3 Prague 2 - Aki Lavinen's pinch-hit RBI double in the 8th won the game.
Helsinki 8 Prague 7 - Prague led 5-0, but 6 Diesel starters got multiple hits and Aleksander Dimmit's bases loaded triple in the 8th put them in front.
Helsinki 2 Prague 1 - The Diesel make their first ELS since the inaugural season thanks to another quality start by Helmuth Buchleitner.


European League Series:

double to left field and will be out for the rest of the series.

Krug was Agatone Dimas' replacement at third base and he made the
difference in the game with a two-run shot into the right field bleachers in

A wild game started when Helsinki made 2 errors in the 1st allowing Glasgow
off to a quick start. The key inning was the 5th when 3 singles, a walk and
a double put the Diesel into the lead for good. Glasgow kept fighting, but
they left the bases loaded in the 8th then went down on only 8 pitches in
the last inning.
Helsinki Diesel win the series 4-0
Series MVP - Aleksander Dimmit (HEL) - 7/16, 2 2B, 5 RBI, 5 R


Nobody can argue that Helsinki don't deserve their first ever EBL title. They were simply stunning throughout the playoffs with their only loss coming to Prague thanks to a 9th inning double. Their starting pitching, especially Helmuth Buchleitner, barely gave their opposition a chance.

1996 European Championships Preview

October 20th 1996 - Ireland will be looking to win their third consecutive European Championship as the tournament kicks off tomorrow. They will probably not be considered as favourites. Their squad has gone through a number of changes since the 1992 tournament, with lots of retirements and even more players on the downside of their career. Here is the draw for Division A.

The tournament should be wide open. My dark horses to watch out for are the Czechs.

A couple of big names who have missed out are Raul Marroquin (who is no longer the player he was when he hit 18 homers in the 1992 tournament) and Kaspar Ahlmann, who is definitely the best German pitcher ever, but isn't good enough to make the squad.

Spain Are Champions Of Europe

31st December 1996 - In a wide open tournament, Spain became the 4th European baseball champions by beating the Czech Republic in 7 games in the final series.

Notes -

Portugal started 6-0 in Group B and Finland started 0-6. Portugal used their start to sneak into the knockout stages, whereas Finland could never quite recover and as a result are relegated to Division B for 2000. Switzerland are the other team relegated after they won only 5 of their last 21 games, including losing their last 10.
The race for Group A was pretty much a 4-team fight all way through with Poland only moving above .500 in the latter stages. Ireland and France were never quite able to topple the Czechs or Austrians and therefore missed out.
Spain had the best second half of anybody, going 14-7 to win Group B.
In Division B, Norway started 9-0 but were actually behind Bulgaria late in the season as both teams gained promotion to the top division fairly comfortably.

Player Notes -

Tahvo Ahonen (Finland) threw a no-hitter on the final day of the regular season which couldn't prevent the Finns relegation. He struck out 10 hitters as they beat Italy 15-0. He had also thrown a three-hitter earlier in the tournament and struck out 13 Russians in a 9-0 win.
Hannes Schwarzenberger (Austria) was 4/4 with a double, a triple and 2 Home Runs in his team's 9-5 win over Switzerland.
Arnaud Bret (France) held Germany to 3 hits through 7 innings and also got 2 hits himself and scored both of his team's runs in a 2-0 win.
Carlos Bustamante (Spain) had 7 RBI on 3 Home runs as the Spaniards beat Finland 11-4.
Thomas Meinert (Denmark) hit .407 through the 40 game season and was named to the All Tournament Team for the third consecutive championship.

Significant Injuries -

Relief pitcher Morten Goldbaek will not be able to suit up for Amsterdam again after suffering a career ending back injury in the early days of the tournament.
No big names were injured through the tournament, so no team can really blame injuries if they didn't perform well.

Semi Finals

Portugal 2 Czech Republic 5 - Anton Gefrovich hit 2 doubles, but was also ejected for arguing over balls and strikes.
Portugal 1 Czech Republic 12 - Borivoj Maimoch allowed only 5 hits through 8 innings and the Czechs got 9 runs in the first 2 innings.
Czech Republic 3 Portugal 2 - Bohdan Leibovic was very strong through 8 innings.
Czech Republic 1 Portugal 2 - The Czechs were shut out until Ota Hospodar's solo shot in the 9th. Placido Gamboa was impressive through 8 innings, allowing only 2 hits and a walk.
Czech Republic 2 Portugal 5 - Portugal scored 4 runs in the 4th and held on to take the series back to Prague.
Portugal 4 Czech Republic 8 - Arnost Mikeska hit a Grand Slam in the 3rd inning to take control of the game and the series.

Austria 1 Spain 4 - Anibal Escamilla held Austria in check over 8 innings.
Austria 4 Spain 5 - Austria led 4-0, but couldn't hold off the hard charging Spaniards.
Spain 9 Austria 5 - Spain came from behind again with 6 runs in the 8th inning thanks to three walks and a three-run homer from Arturo Segura.
Spain 2 Austria 6 - Alois Freindametz struck out 10 Spaniards and also drove in 2 runs.
Spain 1 Austria 0 - Escamilla was great again with a 3-hitter, just bettering Joseph Sykora's 4-hitter.

Ruiz had a no-hitter going through 5.2 innings then gave up a walk and 3
singles to put the Czechs in front. Aleksander Dimmit had a 2-RBI double in
the 7th to push the lead out to 4 runs so even Ramirez's 3-run shot
couldn't get Spain back into the lead.

1997 Preview

March 31st 1997 - Another season of European Baseball is upon us.

The free agent market was particularly quiet in the past off-season with virtually no big names up for grabs. The one big name who was due for free-agency was two-time (and reigning) WL Hitter of the Year, Stefan Fingerlos, but he signed an 11th hour contract extension with Barcelona to prevent him from hitting the market. He will be making $6.4M per year for the next 4 years. His signing means that the Iguanas now have $14.4M of salary tied up in just two players (the other being Nicodemus Theothanou). So whilst they are among the early favourites to win it all, any injury to one of the big two or a slow start from either one could scupper their season.

Reinging champs Helsinki did add to their squad with Finnish star Teemu Tiilikainen who joined from Amsterdam for $26M over 6 years.

Julio Espinoza, who returned from the European Championship with the Final Series MVP award has signed a 7 year contract worth $26.4M with the Oslo Metros.

Other than these the only signings worth mention are a couple of veteran pickups by the Berlin Dragons. They signed Romochka Wider and Bernard Wulker, who are both on the downside of their career, but should at least contribute to the Dragons season.

Zurich, who made the WLCS in 1996 and reigning champions Helsinki both started 1-5. Zurich's response was swift, with a 7 game winning streak, but it hasn't gone well since. Helsinki's response was more methodical and they have moved themselves into prime position to challenge for the Baltic division again.
Berlin were leading the Baltic division after winning 18 games in a row, but have only won 6 of 18 in June so far to drop dehind the Diesel and Oslo.
Sofia's great start to the season included a game in which they scored 5 runs in the 8th and 5 in the 9th to beat Stockholm 19-10.
Stockholm have parted way with their manager as they drifted off the bottom of the Baltic division. They then lost 10 in a row to drop even further back. Moscow have also had a 10 game losing streak.
Two time reigning WL champs, the Glasgow Stallions, are struggling with the bat, but if they come good they could still make a run in the second half.
Vienna scored 10 runs in an inning to beat Milan 13-4.
Zurich and Madrid played a game in May that went 20 innings, with the Hawks eventually winning 5-4.

Player Notes -

Barcelona dominated the Monthly player awards in the WL. Nicodemus Theothanou and Stefan Fingerlos both won a Hitter of the Month award and Mark Dumbreck got a pitching prize. Fingerlos was 6/6 on opening day, but it was his teammate who won the first monthly award with a .386/4/23 April. The only non-Iguana to win a WL Monthly award was Elpidio 'Radar' Janes (Milan), who was 5-0 in April.
Samuele Catenacci (London) smashed 3 homers and drove in 9 runs in his team's 13-4 win over Milan on April 9th. Mario Ramirez (Bareclona) also had a 3 home run day in April, driving in 7 runs in a 12-1 win against Paris.
Stockholm's Gottfried Helfkin hit for the cycle against Prague on April 15th, guiding his team to a 12-2 win. He went on to win the Hitter of the Month award in the EL. Peter Oslund (Oslo) also hit for the cycle in his team's 12-3 win against Prague on May 27th.
There have been a total of 4 one-hitters, with three of them coming in the same week in May. The successful pitchers were Panos Metrofanis (Athens), Jesus Jiminez (Zurich), Gustav Oqvist (London) and Sippo Lahti (Helsinki). Lahti won the April EL Pitcher of the month award also.
Jesus Ruiz (Warsaw) became the second man to reach 250 EBL wins. The 37-year old has a liftime record of 253 wins and 150 losses. Thomas Meinert (Stockholm) hit his 400th home run just before the All-Star break, making him the 2nd man past this milestone. He needs just 3 more hits to be the first man to 3000 EBL hits.
The May EL monthly awards went to Jason Dyer (Hamburg) and Shurik Chanyshev (Berlin).

Significant Injuries -

Oslo's closer Joey van Huizen, who saved 40 games in 1996 only played 3 weeks before being ruled out for the season with a back injury he picked up whilst playing with his child at home.
Rudolf Tuhina (Oslo) is out for nearly a year with a ankle problem. The 38-year old had hit 53 HR combined in 95 and 96.
Sebald Masur (Berlin) will miss 3 months with a wrist issue. The young shortstop was hitting .335 before going out.

Oslo swept Warsaw in their final series to force a play-in game against Budapest for the last playoff spot.
Lisbon won 12 in a row in July to move into contention, but then lost 12 in a row in August to fall back out.
Moscow fired their GM in the middle of a 14 game losing streak in which they conceded 124 runs.
London were 10-19 in July to let the rest of the division back in, then Glasgow went 20-8 in August to take control.
Barcelona went 6-22 in August, but were always in charge of the Meditteranean division.
Vienna went 6-17 in September to fall out of the playoffs.
Sofia led the EL in runs scored and runs allowed.

Player Notes -

Thomas Meinert (Stockholm) took only 2 games to get the 3 hits he needed to reach 3000 hits in his career. Vilfred Krak (Dublin) and Daniel Keurost (Athens) both later passed the 2500 hit plateau, making 7 men in that group. Four men also reached 300 Home Runs for their career - Bernard Wulker (Berlin), Stefan Kowelski (Glasgow), Max Sabin (London) and Jason Dyer (Hamburg).
There were two no-hitters in the space of three days in September. Karcsi Csontas (Amsterdam) shut out Dublin on 2 walks and Gwidon Dobrzynski (Dublin) walked 5 Vienna batsmen in a 2-0 win.
Paco Quinonez (Vienna) hit for the cycle in his team's 15 inning win over London on July 2nd. Carlos Cavazos (Madrid) had a cycle later in the season as well.
Czieslaw Lubelsky (Budapest) had 3 of the best batting performances of the second half with a 3 HR, 7 RBI day against Berlin, another 7 RBI day against Athens and a 6 RBI effort against Stockholm. He also won the EL July Hitter of the Month award (two of these games were in July) with a .408/14/44 statline for the month.
The other Hitter of the Month awards went to Stefan Fingerlos, Nicodemus Theothanou (both Barcelona), Richard Fabre (Vienna), Gustaf Bashe (Helsinki) and Suljo Banovic (Sofia).
The Pitcher of the Month awards were won by Collins Gallagher (Barcelona), Raynaud Mori (Lisbon), Placido Gamboa (Madrid), Milorad Celebic (Oslo), Vaino Saraste (Sofia) and Jouni Hernesniemi (Helsinki).
Lars-Erik Tommeras (Madrid) saw a successfully converted save opportunity sttreak of 50 come to an end late in the season. This is the 3rd best streak ever of this nature.

Significant Injuries -

Mende Agro (Glasgow) injured himself in the first game after the break and will not be back in the playoffs. He had a .325/8/29 first half of the season.
Bohdan Leibovic (Lisbon) missed a month with a torn rotator cuff.
Flip van den Bosch (Sofia) will miss the playoffs because of a broken arm. He also missed the last 4 weeks of the regular season, finishing with 21 homers and 88 RBIs.
Jesus Ruiz (Warsaw) missed 4 weeks with a bicep problem.
Richard Fabre (Vienna) celebrated his WL August Hitter of the Month by straining his achilles and missig the last 3 weeks of the season. He hit .330 with 19 homers on the season.
Paulus Penning (Sofia) will miss the start of the playoffs with a hand problem.
Jay Kerr (Berlin) has had to retire because of a skull injury suffered when he was hit by a pitch. The #6 overall pick in the 1984 draft won two EBL titles whilst with the Dragons and picked up 6 Glove of the Year Awards at third base, including 5 in a row from 1990 to 1994. He was a career .281 hitter with 551 lifetime RBIs.

1997 Playoffs

October 22nd 1997

Play In:

Oslo 1 Budapest 7 - Brad Mardment put together a fine start with just 4 hits allowed in 8 innings.


Wildcards:

London 2 Barcelona 0 - London only got 2 hits, but one of them was a two run homer by Samuele Catenacci. Arnold Schiff pitched a 5-hitter for the victors.
London 5 Barcelona 1 - Alexander Schimpf alowed only 3 hits over 8 innings. The Crocs got two walks and two doules in the 5th to take control.
Barcelona 2 London 4 - Mark McNiven's first ever postseason pitch was hammered into the right filed bleacehrs by Ewan Smith and although he recovered nicely the Barcelona offense continued it's struggle in the series - just 14 hits and 3 runs in the 3 game series.

Milan 4 Glasgow 2 - Milan scored twice in the top of the 9th to take the win.
Milan 2 Glasgow 5 - Sippo Pietarinen's bases-clearing double in the 8th was the difference.
Glasgow 3 Milan 4 (12) - Janos Koncz got an RBI triple to end the game.
Glasgow 0 Milan 6 - Elpidio 'Radar' Janes pitched a superb 2-hitter.

Berlin 5 Helsinki 4 - Berlin came from behind with 2 runs in the 9th to win it. Artemis Vlakhou and Cyprien Garcia both homered for the winners.
Berlin 8 Helsinki 0 - Philippe Da Silva pitched a 5-hitter for the Dragons.
Helsinki 3 Berlin 1 - Both teams got 9 hits as the reigning champions staved off elimination
Helsinki 5 Berlin 10 - Romochka Wider was 3/3 with 2 homers as Berlin advanced.

Budapest 1 Sofia 6 - Stevan Zupljanin pitched a complete game for the Sting.
Budapest 3 Sofia 13 - Tommy 'Fish' Woestenberg hit 2 homers to go with one each by Flip van den Bosch, Stevan Vujica and Suljo Banovic.
Sofia 6 Budapest 7 (13) - Ali Isosomppi came of the bench to hit 2 homers including the game winner.
Sofia 13 Budapest 7 - Sofia charged to a 6-0 lead only to see Budapest tie it up after 3 innings. Sofia continued scoring consistently and won comfortably.


League Championship Series:

London 6 Milan 3 - Magnus Skagen had 2 doubles and a triple as London recovered form a 3-0 deficit to steal Game 1.
London 7 Milan 4 - London hammered Marquise Briatore out of the game in the 5th inning and held on to win.
Milan 6 London 1 - Arturo Segura was 3/5 with 2 homers and 5 RBI to back up 'Radar' Janes' 7-hitter.
Milan 2 London 7 - The Mud Cats outhit the Crocs 11 to 9, but still lost comfortably.
Milan 10 London 5 - Milan hammered Bengt Paulsen for 8 runs in 4.2 innings.
London 3 Milan 8 - London looked to have the momentum as they scored 3 times in the top of the 8th to tie it, but Milan got 5 runs in the bottom half of the inning, including a 3-run CLaudio DalMaistro shot to force Game 7.
London 12 Milan 0 - It was only 3-0 after 7 innings, but Milan never really looked like threatening to score and London went crazy in the last two innings. Samuele Catenacci had a double, triple and homer for the winners.

Berlin 7 Sofia 9 - Flip van den Bosch smacked 2 homers as Sofia powered to a 7-0 lead and then hung on.
Berlin 3 Sofia 4 (12) - Marcal Assis reached on an error by Sebald Masur in the 12th, then stole 2nd and scored on van den Bosch's single.
Sofia 2 Berlin 4 - Signs maybe that the Sofia offense are slowing down? Randy Wulf pitched 8 innings to get the win.
Sofia 3 Berlin 2 - Berlin led 2-1 at the start of the 9th, but Josef Egger hit a pinch-hit RBI triple to tie it and Flip van den Bosch had a two-out RBI double to put Sofia in front.
Sofia 2 Berlin 1 - Just as Sofia's offense is slowing down, their pitching is heating up. Slavik Ronshin went 8.1 innings for the win and Paulus Penning's two-run shot in the 6th was enough to take the Sting to the ELS.


European League Series:

half of the innings by Assis and Woestenberg. London had a chance to
extend the lead in the9th, but Skagen was nailed at home plate by a great
throw by Josef Egger to end the inning. Flip van den Bosch homered to get
Sofia within 1 then Adonis Christakos hit a pinch-hit RBI single to send it to
extras. Carlos Bustamante's 10th inning RBI double was countered by
Woestenberg's second solo shot with the winning run coming on substitute
Brian Slipper's single in the 12th.

Assis got the first 3 runs of the game - twice being driven in by Suljo

Saraste only left the game because of a shoulder problem. Sofia needed
only one hit to score three times in the 2nd thanks to two hit batsmen and

the 9th, but Dom Templeman got Carlos Bustamante to ground out to
secure the win.

1998 Preview

March 31st 1998 - A distinct lack of big names available through free-agency in the past offseason.

The biggest new contract was signed by Joakim Tronstad, who joined Vienna for $22.5M over 5 years. The 29 year-old shortstop hit .290 with 54 RBIs in 1997 for division rivals Barcelona.

The best other player who was a free agent was probably experienced closer Julio Ruiz, who signed a 1 year contract with Berlin for $3.4M. He has saved 106 games combined in the last 3 seasons.

Here's looking forward to another superb EBL season with Sofia, Helsinki, Glasgow, London, Barcelona and maybe some new powers all in contention.

Sofia and Athens have by far the best two records in the league and the second half race in the Black Sea Division should be a dandy.
The other divisions (aside from maybe the Baltic) should provide excellent end of season contests as well.
Five of the 12 games went to extra innings on the second day of the season. The longest game was Amsterdam's 4-2 win over London in 16 innings.
Helsinki scored a total of 42 runs in a 3 game span in the first week of the season.
Madrid scored 10 in an inning twice in the first half of the season. They beat Vienna 12-1 on May 14th and London 14-1 on June 16th.
On May 31st, 4 out of the 6 EL games finished with a 5-4 scoreline.

Player Notes -

Vilfred Krak (Dublin) became the first man to crack the 500 Home Run barrier in the EBL. The 38 year-old has 15 homers this season and 511 on his career. Salmund Jaerbyn (Brussels) became the 13th man to pass 300 homers.
Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin) and James McIlwraith (Brussels) both passed the 250 win plateau, making 4 men now in that elite group.
Bernard Wulker (Berlin) became the second EBL hitter to go to 3000 career hits.
Mario Ramirez (Bareclona) had 2 homers and 6 RBI on April 11th against Amsterdam. Lisbon's Sasha Ristikov also had a 6 RBI day with 2 homers and 4 runs scored in a 16-1 win over Zurich on May 27th.
The Hitter's of the Month awards so far have gone to Stefan Fingerlos (Barcelona), Gage McMahan (Athens), Mende Agro (Glasgow) and Suljo Banovic (Sofia). The Pitching awards went to Sern Lund (Lisbon), Constantino Spotelli (Copenhagen), Raynaud Mori (Zurich) and Guignard Aldobrandini (Athens).
Daniel Keurost (Athens) hit for the cycle on April 14th in a 12-4 win against Stockholm.
Ian McClancy (Athens) had a 27 game hit streak that covered all of April.
There was a no-hitter on May 17th by Jonas Wendorf of Zurich against Dublin. There were also one-hitters by Lisbon team-mates Placido Gamboa and Pasqualino Terragni and by Budapest rookie Stan Boersma.

Significant Injuries -

Elpidio 'Radar' Janes (Milan) was injured on opening day. His back gave out whilst he was pitching and he will miss the whole of the 1998 season.
Flip van den Bosch (Sofia) is having his worst season ever (.226/2/10). He will be hoping for a change in fortunes when he returns from a knee injury in the second half.
Janos Koncz (Milan) will be out until the middle of July with a knee injury. He his hitting .267 with 7 homers in 27 RBI.

Hall Of Fame To Open

July 27th 1998 - The European Baseball League has announced today that they will be opening their Hall Of Fame in the coming offseason.

The newly purpose built building in Bratislava, Slovakia will open it's doors to the public on November 16th this year - one day after the enshrinement of the first class of between 5 and 10 players.

The city of Bratislava was chosen after intense debates between the member nations of the EBL. No-one wanted to see the Hall Of Fame open in a city with a current EBL or minor league franchise, due to the perceived advantage this city would obtain in through traffic. Bratislava is definitely large enough to host a venture of this nature and is fairly centrally located within Europe.

September 26th 1998 - The Athens Avalanche put together the best regular season ever in 1998. They still face a stiff challenge in the EL playoffs though because reigning champs Sofia put together the second best season ever.

Athens won 11 in a row early in the second half to move to the top of the Black Sea division. They had a 24-5 record in July and didn't really slow down. They led the EBL in runs scored (932) and runs allowed (609) with Sofia finishing second in both of those categories (885-631).
Budapest qualified for the playoffs despite trailing Athens by 29 games in their division.
Vienna won in Lisbon on the last day to secure the final WL playoff spot. Madrid had won 2 in a row in Barcelona to move into a tie, but they lost 7-0 on the last day.
Warsaw and Milan both fired their managers late in the season.
Prague scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 9th on July 13th against Hamburg, but unfortunately for them they went into the inning trailing 9-0.
On September 4th, 7 out of the 12 games went to extra innings.

Player Notes -

Stefan Kowelski (Glasgow) won the WL triple crown with a .336 average, 40 homers and 122 RBIs. He was also WL Hitter of the Month for August.
Guignard Aldobrandini (Athens) won the pitching triple crown in the EL, by finishing 24-5 with a 2.97 ERA and 251 strikeouts.
Obelix Barraboutis (Athens) had 11 RBIs in his teams 20-2 win over Moscow on July 23rd. His at-bat sequence went - 2-RBI double (1st), Grand Slam HR (2nd), Ground out (4th), 2-RBI single (5th), 2-RBI HR (7th), walk (8th), RBI walk (9th). He also hit 3 homers in the same game that Phoenix Pappas threw a no-hitter, leading to a 12-0 win over Oslo on August 25th.
Fabien 'Sawmill' Lefebvre (Paris) hit his 400th career homer on September 14th. He is the 3rd man past this mark. Nicodemus Theothanou (Barcelona) and Samuel Polach (Budapest) both went past 300 Home Runs during the season.
Russell Gilmartin (Paris) hit two cycles in the second half of the season. One against Barcelona in July and the other against Zurich at the start of September. Borisav Anastasijevic (Dublin) also had a cycle on July 20th against Glasgow.
The other WL Hitters of the Month were Merlin DeGiusti (Milan) and Bertrand Radcliffe (Brussels). Radcliffe had a 3 homer game on July 31st to secure his award. The EL winners were Gustaf Bashe (Helsinki), Ali Isosomppi (Budapest) and Suljo Banovic (Sofia). Isosomppi had a 5/5 day with 2 homers and 6 RBI against Helsinki on July 30th to sway the voters.
The Pitcher of the months awards went to Arnold Schiff (London), Adrik Selifanov (Amsterdam), Gwidon Dobrsynski (Dublin), Hubert Sittler (Pargue), Vuk Sesely (Athens) and Rene Thierry (Budapest).
Tim Pels (Brussels) went 3 for 4 with 2 homers and 8 RBI as his team beat Amsterdam 11-10 on August 6th.
Javier Rodriguez (Amsterdam) had a 28 game hit streak that finished in early September.

Significant Injuries -

Fiers Akerblom (Warsaw) fractured his skull when being hit by a pitch on July 3rd. He should be fit for the start of the 1999 season. He hit .304 with 13 homers in the first 3 months of the season.
Bengt Paulsen (London) injured his back for the second consecutive season and missed most of the second half. He was 10-5 with a 3.67 ERA on July 17th when he went down.
Nicodemus Theothanou (Barcelona) missed all of August with a thigh injury, but he has been back in the line-up for the last few weeks of the season and is looking dtrong for the playoffs.
Jalmari Makkonen (Amsterdam) will miss the playoffs with a bicep problem. The 40-year old was 12-8 with a 3.45 ERA before his injury.
Antonn Bila (Budapest) is also out for the playoffs after suffering an elbow injury. He finished the season at 15-7 with a 3.43 ERA.

7 Barcelona 5 - Mario Ramirez hit for the cycle, but Dublin scored in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th to win Game 1.
Dublin 3 Barcelona 9 - Barcelona got 5 doubles including RBI ones by Stefan Fingerlos, Nicodemus Theothanou, Mario Ramirez and 'Pistol' Luciani.
Barcelona 5 Dublin 3 - Ivan Hernandez held the Wolfpack to 4 hits and 2 walks over 8 innings. The Barcelona bullpen nearly blew it but they just managed to hold on.
Barcelona 2 Dublin 3 (11) - Dublin's bench came good with Tony Atcheson getting 2 hits and the tying run on a wild pitch by reliever Patrick Fossett and Borisav Anastasijevic hitting the walk-off home run.
Dublin 3 Barcelona 9 - A throwing error, a hit batsmen, a wild pitch and a home run in the second inning helped the Iguanas into an early 7-0 lead that they held on to comfortably.

Vienna 7 Amsterdam 1 - Stevan Koljevic hit two solo homers including one in Vienna's 6-run 8th inning.
Vienna 3 Amsterdam 8 - Koljevic homered again but Amsterdam got a strong team performance to overcome it.
Amsterdam 3 Vienna 8 - Koljevic added two more homers for 4 RBI and a series lead for the Armageddon.
Amsterdam 2 Vienna 7 - Richard Fabre was 3/5 with a homer to lead the Armageddon to the WLCS.

Sofia 3 Helsinki 2 - Sofia only had 1 hit after the 4th inning, but Slavik Ronshin did enough to get them the win.
Sofia 7 Helsinki 2 - 'Fish' Woestenberg doubled and homered as Sofia jumped to an early 6-0 lead and held on.
Helsinki 7 Sofia 5 - Sofia led 4-0, but had to score in the bottom of the 8th to tie it at 5. Helsinki scored two more in the 9th and the Sting couldn't respond.
Helsinki 8 Sofia 3 - Sippo Lahti pitched a complete game and Garry Bryce got 4 of Helsinki's 14 hits.
Sofia 7 Helsinki 5 - All five games went the way of the visiting team after Sofia got 2 runs in the 8th to move ahead for good in this nip and tuck battle.

Budapest 4 Athens 2 - Budapest scored 3 runs in the 1st and Rene Thierry held Athens to 6 hits and 2 runs over 8 innings.
Budapest 1 Athens 2 (14) - Fokke Spruijt homered to lead off the 14th for the win. Budapest only got 2 hits in the game.
Athens 3 Budapest 4 - Zhenya Avrutinhad two homers, including a three-run shot in the 7th to decide the contest.
Athens 3 Budapest 5 (11) - The 114-game winners fall at the first hurdle as Czieslaw Lubelsky hit the walk-off shot in the 11th.

League Championship Series:

Vienna 4 Barcelona 9 - Julio Zamora pitched a complete game and was 3/4 with a home run, 2 runs and 2 RBI.
Vienna 3 Barcelona 1 - Armando Sanchez homered to put Barcelona up and Ivan Hernandez allowed only 2 hits through 7 innings, but the Barcelona bullpen let Vienna take the lead and win the game.
Barcelona 1 Vienna 3 - Barcelona took the lead on Mario Ramirez's RBI double, but they didn't get a hit the rest of the game and a 2-RBI single by ex-Iguana Johannes Enistein put Vienna in front for good.
Barcelona 4 Vienna 2 - Vienna took the lead on Deacon Michalaras' two-run homer in the 3rd, but Nicodemus Theothanou tripled in the 4th and came home on Mario Ramirez's single then himself singled home Barthelemy Luciani after his triple in the 8th to put Barcelona in front for good.
Barcelona 10 Vienna 7 (11) - Vienna scored in 5 of the first 6 innings to lead 7-2, but homers from Armando Sanchez and Walter Baune sent it to extras and a 3-run shot by Mario Ramirez won it. Nicodemus Theothanou scored 4 runs despite not getting a hit thanks to 5 walks.
Barcelona 5 Vienna 4 (14) - Stevan Koljevic hit his 8th homer of the playoffs in the first inning and Vienna 3-0 until late on. 'Pistol' Luciani and Stefan Fingerlos had back-to-back solo shots in the 8th to tie it up. Aaron McIlwraith went deep in the 13th to put Vienna in front after Barcelona had left the bases loaded in the 12th, but Jorge Garcia tied the game with a two-out pinch hit home run and Fingerlos scored the winning run in the next inning on a bases loaded wild pitch by Cesar Catazara.

Budapest 3 Sofia 9 - Marcal Assis hit a homer and scored 3 runs and Vaino Saraste struck out 11 in 8 innings.
Budapest 1 Sofia 2 - Slavik Ronshin was stong through 8 innings for the Sting and Suljo Banovic had a solo homer.
Sofia 9 Budapest 7 (10) - Sofia had an early 4-1 lead, but then had to come from 7-4 down to force extras. Stevan Vujica was 3/6 with a double, a homer and 4 RBIs.
Sofia 4 Budapest 5 - The Smoke just about stated alive by scoring 4 times in the bottom of the 8th. Homers from Suljo Banovic and Tommy Woestenberg had put Sofia up 3-0 in the 1st.
Sofia 3 Budapest 4 - The 4 runs Budapest got in the 5th were enough to send the series back to Sofia. The Sting nearly mounted a comeback, but just fell short.
Budapest 11 Sofia 5 - Budapest go into game 7 with all the momentum after a comfortable win. Flip van den Bosch was 2/2 with 2 homers and 4 runs scored for the losers.
Budapest 1 Sofia 2 - Vaino Saraste held Budapest to 4 hits through 8 innings, but they tied it up in the top of the 9th off reliever Kennet van de Voorst. Vladimiri Marvanov then led off the bottom off the 9th with a solo home run to send the Sting to the European League Series.

European League Series:

Game 1 starters - Sofia: Slavik Ronshin (17-7, 3.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP), Barcelona: Mark Dumbreck (17-13, 3.29 ERA, 1.18 WHIP)

Sofia got a single in each of the first 3 innings, but the only inning in which
they got multiple hits was the 9th when a double-play grounder by Paulus
Penning ended any chance they had to tally a run against the excellent
Dumbreck.
Game 2 starters - Sofia: Jerome Lucas (20-6, 3.04 ERA, 1.19 WHIP), Barcelona: Julio Zamora (13-8, 3.54 ERA, 1.32 WHIP)

Marcal Assis got Sofia's first run of the series by singling, stealing,
advancing on a ground ball and coming home on a sac fly. Julio Zamora
helped his cause by hitting a 2 RBI double for the lead, but he walked the
first two hitters in the 8th and also threw a wild pitch to let the Sting
escape with the win.
Game 3 starters - Barcelona: Ivan Hernandez (12-11, 3.39 ERA, 1.32 WHIP), Sofia: Vaino Saraste (16-9. 3.61 ERA, 1.25 WHIP)

A wild pitch and RBI singles by Helfkin and Flip van den Bosch got Sofia off
to a quick start and Bareclona couldn't force much of a rally until late on.
They had runners on the corners when the final out was recorded.
Game 4 starters - Barcelona: Richard Wolton (14-11, 4.06 ERA, 1.33 WHIP), Sofia: Ronshin

Pedro Bermudez's 2-RBI double gave Barcelona the lead, but Sofia
responded with RBI doubles by Banovic and Stevan Vujica in the 5th. After
Barcelona tied it in the top of the 7th, Banovic hit his homer and Sofia
added an insurance run on a sac fly by Marcal Assis.

Paulus Penning got Sofia started with a homer and Banovic's bases-clearing
triple in the 4th pretty much sealed the deal.

Sofia defend the EBL title in some style for their 3rd championship in 6 seasons. They showed great toughness to win Game 7 of the ELCS.
