1902 July awards

Friday, August 1st, 1902: Rookie Honored by National
Homer Smoot's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Pittsburgh center fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In July he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .425 with 3 doubles, no triples and 4 home runs. Smoot also scored 17 times and drove in 24 runs.

Currently Smoot is batting .386 with 7 home runs and 54 RBIs.

Friday, August 1st, 1902: AL Best Newcomer Trophy Awarded
Patsy Dougherty was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old left fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen July's American Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 26 games Dougherty batted .383 for Boston, slapping 41 hits in 107 at-bats with no home runs, drove in 17 runs and scored 14 times.

This season Dougherty is batting .331 with 123 hits and 1 home run. He has scored 55 times and has 49 runs batted in.

Friday, August 1st, 1902: National Selects #1 Starter in July
Jack Powell's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-1 in July, the 28-year-old St. Louis hurler has been named National Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 20 in 53.1 innings, logged an ERA of 1.18 and allowed opponents to hit .221 against him.

So far this year Powell has a 16-5 record with a 2.13 ERA

Friday, August 1st, 1902: Katoll - AL's Pitcher of the Month
When Jack Katoll takes the hill, chances are good for a Philadelphia victory. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 6-0 mark and 2.50 ERA in 6 starts, tossed 50.1 innings, fanned 6 and held others clubs to a .289 average.

That's why the Athletics star was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the American.

In 1902 thus far, Katoll has tossed 180.2 innings in 21 starts, fanned 31 batters, walked 41 and put up a 2.59 ERA with 17 wins and 2 losses.

Friday, August 1st, 1902: July's NL Batter of Month Award Announced
For a rookie just breaking in, Homer Smoot certainly put together a successful month. It was good enough to win the NL Batter of the Month award for July.

The 24-year-old center fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates hit .425 with 4 home runs, 24 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

So far this year Smoot has hit .386 with 7 home runs, 54 RBIs, and 51 runs scored.

Friday, August 1st, 1902: AL Choice for Batter of the Month is Harvey
Hot-hitting left fielder Zaza Harvey of the Chicago White Sox really pounded opposing pitchers in July and collected American Batter of the Month honors.

He hit .415 with 1 home run and 13 RBIs and scored 18 runs.

This season-to-date Harvey has 1 home run and a .340 batting average

1902 July transactions

Jul 1st 1902 The Boston Beaneaters traded 33-year old right fielder D. Holmes to the St. Louis Cardinals, getting 27-year old closer C. Jones and 24-year old first baseman B. Richardson in return.

Jul 22nd 1902The St. Louis Cardinals traded 37-year old catcher P. Schriver to the Boston Americans, getting 25-year old reliever A. Pearson in return.

Jul 27th 1902 The Cincinnati Reds traded 27-year old shortstop G. Magoon to the Pittsburgh Pirates, getting 25-year old starting pitcher R. Waddell in return

Was wondering why Pirates would trade a 24-10 SP for a SS where is H.Wagner?? WHAT he retired in 1901 because of injuries i was sure i checked retired players at then end of the season. well the trade makes sense now. I will post a little something for important retires

July 28th 1902 The Baltimore Orioles traded 39-year old second baseman W. Robinson to the Cincinnati Reds, getting 26-year old starting pitcher E. Plank and 24-year old third baseman E. Haberer in return.

July 30th 1902 The Brooklyn Superbas traded 25-year old left fielder P. Dougherty to the Boston Americans, getting 26-year old starting pitcher W. Kellum in return.

Wow weird trade here Dougherty was 4th ov pick in 1901 but they are picking up a descent SP

Young SS career stopped short

The Pirates lost a key member of their team last year 09-10-1901Injured (torn back muscle), career-ending injury! he tried to rehab the injury but has decided to call it quits, many feel he was destined to be in the HOF.

World Series Preview

Philadelphia Phillies (101-39) dominated all season, their 4 SP had all over 20 wins,

looking at their off season moves they picked up SP Joe McGinnity who won 21 games for them. they gave up Jimmy Slagle who had a subpar season for Baltimore. This is the only move the made all year, and why would they do anything.

Washington Senators (78-62) had two bad months at the end, no SP with 20 wins, they ranked 2nd in run scored, 1st in HR with 43 in the AL

Looking at their off season moves: after losing SP Mercer to FA, the traded for SP Pittinger and pitched well 14-10 2.91 ERA.

Predictions: Phillies win in 4 don't see Washington winning a game. I will watching all the games

Owner news

Once in awhile i will look at the budget and if there becomes to much of a difference I will make some changes

so this year Detroit stated they will increase their budget to 80k from 60k and the fans liked that showing some more interest, and the local media also paid 34k for the rights to the games. this should help Detroit move past .500 ball.

only 1 change per year if that.
