The Fictional Toronto Blue Jays - Version 2

Well I have learned my lesson about backing up my league files after my last dynasty crashed during the 2009 First Year Player Draft and now I can no longer open up my game because of a corrupt database file.

So I decided to start a new game in 1977 and simulate until Spring Training in 2008 to get a little bit of a history and than I will take over the Toronto Blue Jays no matter what position they are in.

Game Specifics:

Real Major League Teams & Colours
Full Minors from AAA to Rookie Ball
Amature Draft is 25 Rounds with enough players created for 30 rounds
Amature Draft pool is created from Icy's College Template as well as a 200 team fictional highschool template.
Trading is set to Very Hard and Favour Prospects
Development and creation modifiers are as per Skydog's recommendations.

And with that we are ready to go. I will start off posting some league history and than we will get right into the actual game with an introduction to the 2008 Toronto Blue Jays.

A Little League History

Before we get into the day to day operations of the Toronto Blue Jays I thought I would give a breif overview of the history of this league.

Since 1977 the Boston Red Sox have won the most World Series Titles capturing the Trophy 10 times which includes an astonishing 4 in a row and 6 of 7.

In 2007 it was the Cincinnati Reds defeating the Kansas City Royals to capture the first World Series in the Reds History.

The Blue Jays have made 2 World Series Appearances. The first was in 2000 where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The second appearance was in 2005 when they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates and won their only Championship in the teams history.

League History - World Series Champions

The Toronto Blue Jays History

The Jays have been all over the place in the American League East Division bouncing from first to last to the middle of the pact. Since 1977 they have put up a 2626-2561 record and have won one World Series Title in 2005. In 2007 Toronto finished the season with a record of 75-87 and for the second consecutive season found themselves in 4th Place in the American League East.

Are you using a specific fictional quickstart/template for this? I am interested in doing a fictional game, but don't know which QS/Template to use. Any suggestions?

Blue Jays Announce New Manager

March 31st, 2008

With Spring Training right around the corner the Toronto Blue Jays announced that they have terminated the contract of General Manager Julio Tavares and hired 27 yearold Ryan Stewart to be the teams new General Manager.

Toronto is coming off of its second consecutive 4th Place showing in the American League East, finishing with a record of 75-87 and trailing the 1st Place Boston Red Sox by a whopping 24 games.

The Jays are looking to infuse some youth and excitement into the team that since winning its first World Series Championship in 2005 has not made the playoffs in 3 years and has finished no better than 3rd in the division. GM Ryan Stewart on his plans for the team "We are going to sit down and evaluate the entire organization from top to bottom, from the players on the field to the of field personnal. This is a proud organization and we are going to bring it back to respectability. I personally like to build through the draft and develop our own players so it could be a 5 year process or longer. I hope the fans don't get too fed up with us too soon"

Your 2009 Toronto Blue Jays

Well Spring Training has begun and I decided not to make any changes to the roster for the comming season as of yet so we will meet the 2009 Blue Jays as the Roster stands right now. I will break the roster down into 3 parts:

Part 1 - The Starting Rotation
Part 2 - The Bullpen
Part 3 - The Position Players

Part 1 - The Starting Pitchers

SP Jesse Ellis
30 Years Old, LHP, Velocity: 95-97 MPH
Drafted in the 4th Round 106th Overall in 1998 by the Blue Jays.
2008 Stats: 13-11 2.11 ERA 404 K
Contract: 1 year $6,474,000
GM's Comment: He is the undisputed Ace of the staff. He isn't a top flight starter but is consistent and had a winning record on a very bad team. He is still relatively cheep but is a free agent after this season. if I can't get him resigned he could be a prime trade chip at the deadline this year.

SP Randy Williams
26 Years Old, LHP, Velocity: 90-92 MPH
Drafted in the 4th Round 106th Overall in 2002 by the Blue Jays.
2008 Stats: 10-15 2.18 ERA 299 K
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renew
GM's Comment: A good looking young starter. He doesn't have the stuff to blow you away but has great control. He should be in the #2 spot for a while.

SP Roberto Dominguez
27 Years Old, RHP, Velocity: 95-97 MPH
Drafted in the 23rd Round 683rd Overall by Pittsburgh in 2001.
2008 Stats: 9-13 3.00 ERA 256 K
Contract: 1 year $739,000
GM's Comment: Another promising young arm. He can bring his fastball into the high 90's and has very good control. I don't think he will be anything more than a #2-3 starter but he is a good player to have in your rotation.

SP Clint Matthews
31 Years Old, LHP, Velocity: 89-90 MPH
Drafted in the 5th Round 139th Overall in 1999 by St. Louis.
2008 Stats: 14-10 2.72 ERA 177 K (with St. Louis)
Contract: 2 years $720,000
GM's Comment: He was signed by my predessor to a two year contract just prior to the start of Spring Training. he pitched very well for St. Louis last year and should be a good #4 starter for the Jays. He doesn't throww very ahrd and does get hit around a bit but he eats a ton of innings and should win a few games.

SP Kevin Watson
27 Years Old, LHP, Velocity: 94-96 MPH
Drafted in the 3rd Round 69th Overall by Cleveland in 2003.
2008 Stats: 10-12 3.28 ERA 23 BB 200 K
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renew
GM's Comment: A young lefthanded power arm. He strikesout a ton of batters and doesn't really walk many. He is penciled in as the #5 Starter but don't be suprised to see him move up to the #3 or #4 spot at some ponit.

Overall Thoughts:

It is not a terriable pitching staff. I think that they ahve the ability to keep us in games. The only thing that concerns me is the fact that we lack a true #1 starter. I like to have a franchise pitcher as the corner stone of my staff. Someone who is a stoppper. They go out there every 5th day and you know that you have a very good chance of winning. It is something that I will definately address in the draft over the next few seasons.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I almost missed your post!

I am using Icy's Quickstart for OOTP 8. I has all of the correct team names and colours as well as full minors and a 144 NCAA College feeder league. You just have to make a couple of modifications when you are setting up the league. All of the cities that have multiple teams ie. Ney York. You have to remove the (A) from New York (A) Yankees in the 'Names & Affiliations' section. Than go to each of these team and update their team logo and will put the correct picture.

This template is availiable on Padres Fan's Website and I think it is very good.

Good luck!

Thanks for reading

2009 Toronto Blue Jays - Part 2 - The Bullpen

Okay so on to part two of our introduction to the Toronto Blue Jays, The Bullpen

Part 2 - The Bull Pen

MR Carlos Romain
27, RHP, Velocity: 92-94 MPH
Drafted in the 8th Round 235th Overall by Toronto in 2001.
Contract: Minor League Contract
2008 Stats: 15-11 2.38 ERA (with AAA Syracuse)
GM's Comment: A converted starter he will be my long man/spot starter out of the pen. He has never really lived up to his ability as a starter but seems to have found a nich as a reliever. If there are any injuries he could find himself into the starting rotation.

MR Shawn McMillan
33, RHP, Velocity: 90-92 MPH
Signed as a Non-drafted feeagent in 2001 by Milwaukee.
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renew
2008 Stats: 5-1 1 SV 2.33 ERA
GM's Comment: Perhaps the Jays most consistent reliever in 2008. He has very good stuff and is very smart with his pitches. He is getting a little older but is showing no signs of slowing down. He will be the leader in my pen for at least the 2009 season.

MR Eli O'Finn
25, RHP, Velocity: 97-99 MPH
Signed as a non-drafted freeagent in 2001 by Toronto.
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renewal
2008 Stats: 6-6 2 Saves 2.48 ERA
GM's Comment: A very promising young arm. He throws very hard and has tremendous stuff. He could have closer potential and he is definately someone to watch in the Jays bullpen.

MR Barry Bruce
23, RHP, Velocity: 93-95 MPH
Signed as a non-drafted freeagent in 2004 by Washington.
Contract: $350,000 Auto renewal
2008 Stats: 2-6 2 SV 6.80 ERA
GM's Comment: He got hit around quite a bit in his rookie season but he has tremendous upside and could challenge for the closers spot one day. At only 23 he is very young and has a promising future with the Jays.

MR Victor Flores
29, RHP, Velocity: 93-95 MPH
Signed as a non-drafted freeagent in 1999 by Seattle.
Contract: $393,000 2 year
2008 Stats: 1-3 1 Save 2.33 ERA
GM's Comment: A very strong arm. He could be the closer but doesn't possess very good control. I like him in a set up role that is the role he will play in 2009. He could also step in and close shout it be necessary.

CL Matt Blue
32, RHP, Velocity: 96-98 MPH
Signed as a non-drafted freeagent in 1996 by the Cubs.
Contract: $3,320,000 1 year
2008 Stats: 2-4 12 saves 1.99 ERA
GM's Comment: The best arm that I have in the pen. He has electric stuff and can simply blow hitters away. At only 32 he still has a few good seasons left and depending on where we sit in the standings could be a very good barganing chip at the trade deadline.

Overall Comments:

Like the starting rotation the Bullpen is not that bad. There are some promising young arms down there mixed in with some good veterans for leadership. I don't think I will have to tinker here too much but there is always oppertunity for improvement.

2009 Blue Jays - Part 3 - The Position Players

Okay, here is the final part in the 3 part series that is intended to introduce you to the 2009 Toronto Blue Jays.

Part 3 - The Position Players

C John Johnson
34, LHB
Signed as a non-drafted freeagent in 1997 by Philedelphia.
Contract: 2 years $9,240,000/year
2008 Stats: .232 18 HR 60 RBI
GM's Comment: He is a very good catcher both defensively and offensively. His only down side is the fact that he makes nearly $10 million a year and he is almost 35 years old. He could be a good barganing chip at the trade deadline though if the Jays are well out of the race.

C Fernando Antunez
29, RHB
Drafted in the 2nd Round 35th Overall by Colorado in 2000.
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renewal
2008 Stats: .164 2 HR 16 RBI
GM's Comment: He is really nothing more than a defensive specialist. He is terriable with the bat but has a phenominal arm and is one of the best defensive catchers I have ever seen. He will be my primary back up this year but don't expect him to get into many games as a starter.

1B Orlando Serna
35, LHB
Drafted in the 3rd Round 76th Overall in 1997 by Washington.
Contract: $21,850,000/year 2 years left
2008 Stats: .258 19 HR 58 RBI
GM's Comment: He is easily the best hitter on the Jays roster and is consequently the most expensive. He is getting older but at $21 million a season he is extremely difficult to move. may be stuck with him for another year. He is a good hitter though so he will anchor my lineup in the cleanup spot.

2B Lorenzo Diaz
28, LHB
Drafted in the 4th Round 99th Overall in 2000 by Pittsburgh.
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renewal
2008 Stats: .249 8 HR 26 RBI
GM's Comment: A good defensive secondbaseman but not all that gifted offensively. He will be my starting secondbaseman in 2008 as there really isn't anyone else capable of the job.

3B Tomas Trevino
26, RHB
Drafted in the 10th Round 271st Overall in 2002 by the White Sox.
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renewal
2008 Stats: .187 2 HR 10 RBI
GM's Comment: He struggled mightally in 2008 battling a number of injuries that saw him miss lare parts of the season. He has a lot of talent and we are going to lean on him this year to help carry out offence.

3B P.J. Anderson
27, LHB
Drafted in the 19th Round 552nd Overall in 2004 by the Toronto.
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renewal
2008 Stats: .301 4 HR 36 RBI (with AAA Syracuse)
GM's Comment: He is finally going to get a shot with the big club. He has hit over .300 in AAA the past 3 years and will get a chance to do it at the major league level. He is a very good talent and hopefully he can have a big breakout season for the Jays.

SS Kevin Mann
35, LHB
Drafted in the 19th Round 541st Overall in 1992 by the Angels.
Contract: $690,000 1 year
2008 Stats: .172 2 HR 24 RBI
GM's Comment: At 35 he is alrady starting to feel the decline from age. His stats have dropped off significantly in the past few seasons and he is not slated as the starting SS anymore. I doubt he will be getting a new contract after this year.

SS Mike Thomas
37, Switch Hitter
Drafted in the 11th Round 330th Overall in 1994 by Colorado.
Contract: $10,800,000 1 year
2008 Stats: .197 8 HR 24 RBI
GM's Comment: He is making a ton of money for a 37 yearold who hit just .197 last year. I would love to trade him but no GM in their right mind would ever take him. We are stuck with him for the rest of the year I am affraid.

LF Michael Lee
24, LHB
Drafted in the 5th Round 132nd Overall in 2004 by Toronto
Contract: Minor League Contract
2008 Stats: .290 5 HR 19 RBI (with AAA Syracuse)
GM's Comment: Finally some young talent. He is not a superstar by any means but should be a starting left fielder. He hits for a good average and power and will be the starting LF for the Jays this year.

LF Daniel Baker
32, LHB
Drafted in the 7th Round 191st Overall in 1998 by Kansas City.
Contract: $5,120,000 1 year
2008 Stats: .205 10 HR 42 RBI
GM's Comment: He is not going to be very happy losing the starting LF job. At 32 he still has a few good years left and he may be traded at the deadline to try and get something since it is likely that he will walk in the offseason.

CF Alonso Qunitana
28, LHB
Drafted in the 14th Round 393rd Overall in 2003 by the Angels. Contract: $350,000 Auto Renewal
2008 Stats: .238 8 HR 19 RBI
GM's Comment: He is nothing special but gets the job done in the outfield. He is defensively sound and can run well and steal some bases. He is very cheep and is a good option for now in the outfield.

RF Cole Moher
26, LHB
Drafted in the 1st Round 28th Overall in 2001 by Toronto
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renewal
2008 Stats: .232 4 HR 13 RBi
GM's Comment: This kid looked like he would be something special when he was taken in the 1st Round in 2001, but he has not materialized and met expectations. He is still young and has some time left but it is getting shorter and this could be his last chance as a Jay.

RF Carlos Zamora
26, LHB
Drafted in the 1st Round 20th Overall in 2005 by Toronto
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renewal
2008 Stats: .167 4 HR 28 RBI
GM's Comment: He only had limited atbats with the Jays in 2008 but will likely split time in 2009. He has some talent and should be a very good hitter. If he can reach these expactations is the million dollar question.

RF Henrey Arents
27, RHB
Drafted in the 4th Round 103rd Overall by Florida in 2003.
Contract: $1,110,000 1 year
2008 Stats: .191 2 HR 18 RBI
GM's Comment: Like most of the other Jays he really struggled last year and is hoping that a fresh start will help him regain some of his ability. He is a valuable player as he can play all 3 outfield positions and is defensively sound.

Genneral Comments:

Well that is not the lineup that I was hoping to field. It is no wonder the Jays have been in trouble in the American League East the Past 2 years. I think I am going to end up in a complete rebuilding mode here. It might be time to tear it all down and start from scratch.

Some of you may be wondering about the Jays prospects. Well I was going to do a part 4 but the Jays have drafted so badly over the last few years that they have no players listed in the Baseball America's top 100 list. So that makes this job that much more difficult.

Wow, rough lineup. You don't have much at all to work with. Could be a long year in Toronto.

You aren't kidding there. I am suprised that these guys were able to win even 78 games last year! I can't decide if I should go into a complete rebuilding mode yet or not though. The pitching is decent but with bad hitting they are going to get shelled.

Jays Complete 1st Month Under New GM

May 1st, 2009

The Toronto Blue Jays kicked off the 2009 Season this month and posted a dissapointing, but not entirely unexpected record of 9-13. They once again find themselves in 4th Place in the American League East Division trailing the 1st Place Boston Red Sox by 6 games.

It was a relatively slow month for the new GM as he took most of the time to simply get aquainted with his players and tries to identify where improvements need to be made. April News & Transactions

Trades:

GM Ryan Stewart mad his first trade as the General Manager of the Blue Jays today sending 3B Fred Thompson to the Chicago White Sox for a trio of young prospects in SP Glen Fitzhandinge, SS Dave Wallace and RF Clyde Scott.

GM Ryan Stewart on the trade "I didn't even realize that Thompson was on the roster. He was injured during the offseason and placed on the disabled list. When he was ready to come off there was no room for him so I decided to trade him. The White Sox were interested and gave us a nice package of prospects for him"

Players to Chicago

3B Fred Thompson
38 Years Old, RHB
.217 17 HR 43 RBI (with Toronto)

Players to Toronto

SP Glenn Fitzhardinge
20 years old, RHP, Velocity: 94-96 MPH
Drafted in the 5th Round 148th Overall in 2008 by Chicago
2-7 2.49 ERA with Bristol (Rookie League)
GM's Comment: A young pitcher with electric stuff. He struggled in his first pro year but that is expected. He scouts as a middle of the rotation pitcher and instantly becomes one of the Jays top pitching prospects.

SS Dave Wallace
20 years old, Switch hitter
Drafted in the 12th Round 358th Overall in 2008 by Chicago
.229 0 HR 7 RBI with Bristol (Rookie League)
GM's Comment: He struggled quite a bit in his first year pro. He has the ability to be a .300 hitter but won't hit many homeruns. His defense is fantastic and could be a gold glove winner if he makes it.

RF Clyde Scott
20 years old, RHB
Drafted in the 5th Round 137th Overall in 2007 by Chicago.
.277 with 1 HR and 11 RBI with Bristol (Rookie League)
GM's Comment: he spent 2 seasons in the Rookie League and he looks like he is ready to break out. He won't hit a ton of homeruns but 10-15 are not out of the question. His real strength is his stealling ability and he could steal a ton of bases. He projects as a leadoff hitter in the majors.

Jays still in 4th After a Better Month of May

June 1st, 2009

The Toronto Blue Jays just finished off the month of May with a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners to improve to 15-14 during the month. They also pushed their overall record closer to .500 at 24-27. Despite their first winning month under their new General Manager the Jays are 13 Games out of first Place in the American League East, trailing the Boston Red Sox. Toronto is also 12 games behind the Detroit Tigers for the American League Wild Card.

The fact that the Jays are so far out in the race already has made may fans call for the new GM to completely blow up the team and deal as many veterans for younger players and prospects as possible now to retool for the future. The Jays do have a few good trading pieces in SP Jesse Ellis and 1B Orlando Serna who could bring a nice package of players and prospects in return. The trade deadline is only 2 months away so the new GM does not have a lot of time to make a decision.

May Notable Performances

SP Jesse Ellis - 5-1 2.36 ERA
SP Curt Matthews - 3-09 1.87 ERA
SP Randy Williams - 3-3 5.84 ERA
RF Carlos Zamora - .330 2 HR 17 RBI
CF Alonso Quintana - .296 5 HR 9 RBI
1B Orlando Serna - .269 5 HR 16 RBI

May News & Transactions

SP Jesse Ellis was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for May after posting a fantastic recor of 5-1 with a 2.36 ERA. It is the first time this year that he has one the award.

Nothing else this month kind of a boring month.
