June 17,18 at Dover Green Wave (37-23)
June 17-Monty Frank allowed just four hits and one run over eight innings, striking out seven, and Jeffrey Franklin went 2-4 with an RBI double as Dover squeaked past the Mules 2-1. Fernando Garcia went the first five innings, scattering eight hits and allowing just one run. Dover would win the game as a throwing error by C Luis Ortiz would allow PR John Blandford score off John Coury in the bottom of the 8th inning. (27-33) W-Monty Frank (8-3) L-John Coury (1-3) S-Ruben Arevalo (11) June 18-The top two batters in the Mules batting order, Scott Fullerton and Fernando Peralta went a combined 6-10 with 3 homeruns, nine RBI and 5 runs scored with Fullerton going 3-6 with a homerun, four RBI and three runs and Peralta went 3-4 with two bombs, five RBI and two runs scored as Newmarket hammered Dover 11-3. Joey Blye was the beneficiary off all the offense, going six innings, allowing three runs and six hits with 2 strikeouts, earning his 3rd win of the year. (28-33) W-Joey Blye (3-5) L-Jerry McCauley (5-5) HR-NMKT Fernando Peralta 2(10), Scott Fullerton (1) June 20,21,22 at Bangor Crusaders (34-28) June 20-Tony Aguirre went eight innings, allowing three runs and striking out nine as he outpitched Jesus Guardado, who allowed 10 hits and 4 runs, just two earned over seven innings as Bangor beat Newmarket 4-3. In his first game back from injury, Dennis Spears went 2-4 with a homerun and two RBI for the Mules in the loss, while backup IF George Vickers hit his first HR of the year for Newmarket. (28-34) W-Tony Aguirre (9-5) L-Jesus Guardado (8-5) S-Hyeok Park (1) HR-NMKT Dennis Spears (9), George Vickers (1) June 21-Carlos Lopez went 3-4 with a tie breaking grand slam in the 7th inning off Al Foster as the Crusaders beat the Mules 7-4. Luis Sanches picked up his first loss of the year, going six innings, allowing six hits, five runs with six walks and six strikeouts. Mario Decos, back from injury hit a solo HR in his first appearance in about 3 weeks. (28-35) W-He-ping Gu (1-0) L-Luis Sanchez (3-1) S-Hyeok Park (2) HR-NMKT Roberto Rodriguez (13), Mario Decos (11), Alberto Flores (6), BAN Carlos Lopez (9) June 22-Newmarket avoided the sweep as the Mules scored twice in the top of the 9th inning giving them a 6-4 win after allowing the Crusaders to tie the score in the bottom of the 8th with a HR off John Coury. Mario Decos went 1-3 with three RBI and Dennis Spears and Fernando Peralta each added three hits for the Mules in the win. (29-35) W-John Coury (2-3) L-Jesus Flores (9-5) HR-BAN Bryan Scharf 2(10) News and Notes: NL Player of the Week: Jose Velazquez (Durham) .455 (10-22) 2 HR 5 RBI SL Player of the Week: Norman Vickers (Salem) .500 (11-22) 4 HR 13 RBI -The Nashua Titans have sent 2B Keith James to the Augusta Moose in exchange for 27 year old reliever Juan Torres. The 31 year old James was hitting .303 with 9 homeruns and 22 RBI for the Titans on the year in 152 AB's. Torres was 3-2 with a 2.16 ERA. He had appeared in 22 games, covering 25 innings. He had allowed 23 hits and 10 walks while striking out 26 and saving 5 games for the Moose on the year. -Salem has lost star OF Scott Gardner for the season with a broken foot. Gardner suffered the injury when his foot was stepped on as he was running to first base. On the year, Gardner was hitting .358 with 22 homeruns and 44 RBI while scoring 74 runs. He had just signed a contract extention last month to keep him in Salem for the next four seasons. -Rob Gibson of the Portsmough Clippers, who as recently as a month ago was leading just about every major offensive category, has gone thorugh a horrendous slump over the last 22 games. He is hitting just .205 (15-73) since May 31st. He has just 1 homerun and six RBI in that span. -The Portland Bulldogs continue their march to futility with regards to stolen bases. Through 65 games, the plodding Bulldogs have one stolen base and have attemped just three all year, all by 2B Jason Tate. Next on tap for Newmarket is the end of their roadtrip as they head to Durham for three games to face off against the Bobcats followed by a visit to Newmarket by the Portland Bulldogs for 4 games. |

June 23-Jose Velazquez went 3-4 with a HR and four RBI, and Ronald Combs went 2-4, including a homerun and three RBI as Durham outslugged Boston 11-7. Alberto Flores went 2-4 with three RBI and Roberto Rodriguez added two hits, including a HR and pair of RBI in the loss. Carlos Teyo struggled again, going five innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, and was optioned back to AA after the loss. Luis Sanchez lost his second game of the year, going just four innings, allowing eight hits and nine runs walking four. Portland had tied the game in the top of the 9th inning off John Coury as Geunhye Mun had hit a solo homerun, knotting the game at 3. Roberto Rodriguez continued his hot streak, hitting his 16th HR of the year, driving in two. Luis Morales had two hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs in the win, while Alberto Flores and Bobby Harris each drove in a pair of runs for the Mules in the loss. On the year, Pollack is hitting .309 with 5 homeruns and 24 RBI with 44 runs scored on the year. Leading into July for Newmarket is three games at home against the Portsmouth Clippers followed by another extended roadtrip, starting with four games in Orono against the Riot. |

June 30-Fernando Peralta homered, doubled and drove in two and Todd Lewis hit his 2nd HR of the year as Newmarket squeaked past Portsmouth 5-4. Dan Zimmerman, back from injury, went eight innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while walking two and striking out seven to earn his first win since April 16. Rob Gibson hit his 20th HR of the year, a two run shot in the loss for the Clippers. Mario Decos added a two run double in the win for the Mules. Leading into the All-Star Break for the Mules is a 6 game road trip that starts in Portland against the Bulldogs followed by a trip to Dover to square off against the Green Wave. |

July 8,9,10 at Portland Bulldogs (32-47)
July 8-Fernando Garcia came out of the game after the first inning with an apparant elbow injury, an injury that would be diagnosed as a season ending ligament fray, and this would open the door for Portland, as Jason Tate went 3-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored as Portland doubled up the Mules, winning 6-3. Jose Barron went eight innings, allowing six hits and three runs to go along with three walks and six strikeouts, earning the win. (36-43) W-Jose Barron (9-8) L-Joey Blye (4-7) S-Douglas Mud (15) HR-POR Jason Tate (18), Mario Saenz (12) July 9-Dennis Spears went 2-4 with a pair of homeruns, three RBI and four runs scored, and Todd Lewis went 4-5 with three RBI as Newmarket hammered Portland 15-2. The Southern League scored four times in the first inning off Ernesto Garcia of the Durham Bobcats, capped by a two run HR off the bat of game MVP Andre Normandin of Manchester and a two run double off the bat of Marcos Diaz of the Exeter Blue Hawks, leading the SL to a 5-3 win over the NL. Fernando Peralta of the Newmarket Mules was the only NL player with more than one hit as he went 2-2 with a run scored. Garcia went just five innings, allowing two hits and one run with eight strikeouts. Leading the offense for the Mules was Alberto Flores, who went 2-4 with an RBI. Jesus Guardado gave up seven runs and 11 hits over eight innings, picking up his 7th loss of the year. The loss spoiled a great outing from Dan Zimmerman, who pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Coury pitched the final three innings, giving up four hits and three runs, while striking out six, but earning his 5th loss of the year. (41-50) W-Jerry Ward (1-5) L-John Coury (4-5) News and Notes: -Newmarket has gone a long way to ensure that they keep their star players as they lock up All-Star 3B Roberto Rodriguez for four more years, taking him to his 36th birthday. The deal calls for "The Dominator" to be paid $2.45 million a year for each year of the contract. There is also a $500,000 MVP clause in the deal. On the season, Rodriguez his hitting a league leading .340 with 23 HR and 56 RBI in 332 AB's. John Coury picked up the save despite walking the bases loaded in the 9th inning. First, they sent SS George Vickers and RP Wilford Cranford to the Portland Bulldogs in exchange for SP Jose Barron. Barron was 10-9 with a 3.78 ERA. In 21 starts, covering 140 1/3 innings, Barron allowed 141 hits and 46 walks with 152 strikeouts. Vickers, backing up Bobby Harris on the year, was hitting .280 with one HR and three RBI in 50 AB's, while Cranford was 3-2 with a 4.43 ERA. In 42 2/3 innings, Cranford had struck out 47 and walked 30. The second move saw Newmarket send their starting CF Dennis Spears to the Danvers Falcons for P Chester Griffin. Griffin was 5-10 with a 4.39 ERA. In 24 starts, covering 155 1/3 innings, Chester has allowed 147 hits with 57 walks and 163 strikeouts. On top of that, Griffin is due to be paid just over $450,000 a year for the next three years. The price was steep in Spears, but the Mules will give the starting CF job to Scott Fullerton. Spears was hitting .304 with 13 HR and 31 RBI. He also stole 13 bases, while batting leadoff most of the year for Newmarket. Gloucester sent 1B Terrance Bernard to the Portland Bulldogs in exchange for 30 year old reliever Javier Valenzuela. Bernard was hitting .301 with one HR and 16 RBI on the year, while Valenzuela was 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 2 saves at the time of the deal. August 8-Marvin Sellers hit a two run HR as Jose Barron was the hard luck loser, pitching eight innings, allowing just five hits and three runs with no walks and 12 strikeouts, but was outpitched by Jorge Garcia, who allowed just two hits and one run over seven innings as Augusta beat Newmarket 3-1. (50-55) W-Jorge Garcia (14-6) L-Jose Barron (10-12) S-Anastacio Martinez (13) HR-AUG Marvin Sellers (9) August 9-Roberto Rodriguez had three hits and two RBI and Alberto Flores added three hits and one RBI in support of Chester Griffin, who went the first eight innings, allowing four hits and three runs, walking one and striking out 12, picking up his 2nd win as a member of the Mules, as Newmarket beat Augusta 6-4. Alberto Flores homered and drove in two in the win for the Mules and Scott Fullerton added two hits and two runs scored as well. Jesus Guardado pitched eight innings, allowing six hits and one earned run, picking up his 14th win of the year. (52-55) W-Jesus Guardado (14-9) L-Donald Warner (6-18) HR-NMKT Roberto Rodriguez (27), Alberto Flores (11), AUG Jose Munoz (13) August 11,12,13,14 v Bangor Crusaders (57-49) August 11-Denis Sullivan and Auerlio Barron each hit two run homeruns off Dan Zimmerman as Bangor got past Newmarket 4-2. Hyeok Park pitched 7 1/3 innings, giving up four hits, no runs, no walks and eight strikeouts, earning the win, while Dan Zimmerman pitched seven innings giving up nine hits and four runs with six strikeouts in the loss. He got offensive support from Roberto Rodriguez, who hit a two run HR and Sergio Hernandez and Scott Fullerton, who each had two hits and an RBI in the 4-1 Mules win. (53-56) W-Jose Barron (11-12) L-Jesus Flores (12-10) HR-NMKT Roberto Rodriguez (28) August 13-Scott Fullerton hit a two out, walk off double, scoring Allan Fox, who had hit a pinch hit double, giving the Mules a 4-3 win in 11 innings against the Crusaders. Mario Decos and Roberto Rodriguez each homered in the win for Newmarket, and John Coury pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits and striking out one, earning the win and evening his record at 5-5 on the year. On the year, Lucero is hitting .302 with 17 homeruns and 50 RBI in 330 AB for Dover on the year, while throwing out 29.7% of basestealers. -The Davners Falcons and closer Dylan Roads have agreed on a new one year extention that will take Roads through the end of next season, paying him $211,000. On the year, Roads has 15 saves in 29 appearances. In 65 innings, he has allowed 59 hits and 24 walks while striking out 56. Ending the season for the Mules as they try to get above .500 for the first time since the end of April are three games in Portsmouth against the Clippers, followed by the last six games of the year, all at home. The first three against the Dover Green Wave followed by the Durham Bobcats coming to Newmarket to end the season with three games. |

August 15-Sergio Hernandez went 4-4 with a homerun, double and two RBI, and Fernando Peralta hit his 20th HR of the year as Newmarket beat Portsmouth 5-2. Dan Zimmerman pitched six innings, allowing four hits and one run with no walks and five strikeouts before leaving with an injury, picking up his 8th win of the year. (56-56) W-Dan Zimmerman (8-10) L-Jessie Church (7-7) S-John Coury (23) HR-NMKT Fernando Peralta (20), Sergio Hernandez (5) August 16-Diego Moran went 2-5 with three RBI, and Matt Thomas went seven innings, allowing just two hits and one run with two walks and five strikeouts as Portsmouth beat Newmarket 6-1. Jose Barron struck out 10 over six innings, picking up the loss. Pablo Lucero hit a game tying two run blast and Takeru Sato hit a pinch hit two run blast giving the Green Wave the lead. Roberto Rodriguez and Bobby Harris each drove in runs with RBI doubles in the loss for the Mules. (57-61) W-Leon Garcia (14-9) L-Paco Anaya (1-2) HR-OYS Richard Batterham (7), Jose Gutierrez (2) August 23-Jose Gutierrez went 2-4 with a pair of RBI and Ernesto Garcia went 7 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and two runs with five walks and strikeouts, picking up his league leading 17th win of the year as the Bobcats beat the Mules 3-2. Alberto Flores went 2-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI in the loss for Newmarket. (57-62) W-Ernesto Garcia (17-7) L-Jesus Guardado (15-10) S-Steve MacFadden (24) August 24-Big day for Alberto Flores in the season finale as the 22 year old rookie went 3-3 with a homerun, double and five RBI, and Todd Lewis added three hits and two RBI as the Mules finish their season 58-62 on the year, beating the Bobcats 13-6. Jose Barron picked up the win, despite allowing 10 hits and five runs over six innings. He also walked two and struck out nine in the win. (58-62) W-Jose Barron (12-13) L-Jaime Serna (5-6) HR-NMKT Fernando Peralta (21), Alberto Flores (12), OYS Hirokumi Kato (1) News and Notes: Three of the four divisions have been settled after the 120 game season. The Bangor Crusaders, Dover Green Wave, and Nashua Titans have all won their respective divisions. However, the Massachusetts division still does not have a champion. The Marblehead Magicians and Salem Witches end the season with identical 61-59 records and will be forced to play a one game playoff to determine who will face the Nashua Titans in the Southern League Championship Series.
