Northern League Championship Series
Newmarket Mules v Bangor Crusaders

Game One- Jeffrey Franklin, hitting just .179 (34-189) since the beginning of June, and having just one homerun since the start of July, hit a walkoff two run homerun off Sandy Martin in the bottom of the 9th inning, giving the Mules a 3-1 victory over Bangor and a 1-0 Series lead. Jesus Rodriguez hit a solo HR in the 4th inning to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead, but an error by Louie Kelly allowed the tying run to score in the bottom of the inning. The score would remain tied until Franklin untied it with two outs in the ninth.

Game Two- Another wild game saw Hyeok Park, who had allowed just one run all year in 34 2/3 innings, allowed a two out, two run walkoff homerun to Quint Kobes, giving the Mules their second straight win in their last at-bat, beating the Crusaders 6-4 in 12 innings, and putting them within one win of their first World Series appearance ever. Newmarket took a 2-0 lead after three innings, on RBI from Jeffrey Franklin and Roberto Rodriguez. Bangor would score four times in the 7th to take a 4-2 lead, an inning capped by a two run single off the bat of Denis Sullivan. Newmarket would battle back with single runs in the 8th and 9th innings to force extra innings, and today, the Mules bullpen was better than the Bangor pen, as three Mules relievers combined to pitch five innings, allowing three hits, striking out six.

Game Three- For a third straight game, a team won the game in their final at-bat, however, this time it was Bangor who pulled it off as pinch hitter Ricardo Naut, who hit just .088 (5-57) on the year, drove in Louie Kelly in the bottom of the 9th inning, keeping hope alive for the Crusaders as they beat the Mules 4-3 in 11 innings. Bangor would take a 3-0 lead after four innings as Pablo and Jose Sanchez each drove in runs. Newmarket would tie it at 3 in the 7th inning as Alberto Flores homered and Fernando Peralta hit an RBI single. The score would remain tied until Naut drove home Kelly off Ki-heung Song.

Game Four- Roberto Rodriguez came to the plate five times in Game Four, and in four of the appearances, the Bangor pitching staff walked him to face Quint Kobes. Kobes made them pay, going 3-5 with an RBI to lead the Newmarket Mules into their first World Series appearances, beating the Crusaders, 5-2. Series MVP Jesus Flores went eight innings, allowing just two runs and scattering eight hits, walking none and striking out three. Flores pitched twice in the series, going 16 innings, allowing just 11 hits and two runs, walking two and striking out eight while posting a 1.13 ERA. John Coury, appearing in three of the four games, pitching a perfect ninth, striking out one to earn the save. Newmarket jumped out ahead early with two runs in the first on RBI's from Rodriguez and Kobes, and extended the lead to 3-0 on an RBI groundout from Jesus Flores. Pablo Sanchez would hit a solo HR in the fifth to bring the Crusaders within one at 3-2, but that was as close as they would get.

Southern League Championship Series
Exeter Blue Hawks v Peabody Tanners

Game One- The bottom four hitters in the Peabody lineup went 7-15 with four RBI and five runs scored as the Tanners took a 1-0 Series lead, beating Exeter 7-3. A four run inning capped off by an RBI triple off the bat of Mark Lott gave Peabody a 5-0 lead, a lead they would not surrender. Enrique Morales went the distance for the Tanners, striking out 11, throwing 125 pitches, 89 for strikes.

Game Two- Tony Miranda hit a two run HR for Exeter, and 40 year old Kunitaro Asano went 2-4 with two RBI as Exeter evened up the SLCS at one game apiece as they beat Peabody easily, 8-1. Josh Price also homered for the Blue Hawks in the win, behind Ramon "Nightmare" Ramirez and four Exeter relievers.

Game Three- Ivan Aguilar broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly, and Exeter would score twice more, once in the eighth on a single from Tony Miranda and again in the ninth as Terry Jacks drove home Jose Corona with a single, and Will Dillman was dominant for eight innings, allowing just five hits while walking none and striking out two, as Exeter blanked Peabody 3-0 and taking a 2-1 Series lead.

Game Four- Josh Price gave Exeter a 1-0 lead with a single in the 4th, but Michael Gray would hit a two run HR in the bottom of the fifth, accounting for all the scoring as Peabody tied the Series at 2 games each, forcing a deciding Game Five as the Tanners beat the Blue Hawks, 2-1.

Game Five- Bryan Bowles hit a 2-2 pitch to center field, and Josh Price just beat the throw home by CF Alfred Cook in the bottom of the 12th inning, giving the Exeter Blue Hawks the 3-2 win and the right to face the Newmarket Mules in the 2010 World Series. Peabody would get on the board first as Bob Clark drove in Len Reese with an RBI single, and Exeter would tie it as Geunyhe Mun would double home Rafael Delgado. Delgado would then drive home Terry Jacks with a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth, and Peabody would come right back in the 9th Juan Nunez would drive home Cook with a double tying the game at 2. Ramon Ramirez was named SLCS MVP, pitching 12 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and two runs, just one earned, walking none and striking out 14, and posting a 0.71 ERA.

2010 World Series
Newmarket Mules v Exeter Blue Hawks

Game One- Quint Kobes went 3-5 with two RBI and Juan Escobedo broke a 4-4 tie with a sacrifice fly as the Mules took a 1-0 Series lead, beating Exeter, 5-4. Exeter actually took a 2-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings on RBI's from Ivan Aguilar and a solo HR from Josh Price. Newmarket would score four times in the bottom of the fifth, capped by a two run single off the bat of Kobes. Tony Miranda and Terry Jacks would tie the game with RBI singles in the 6th and 8th respectively.

Game Two- Newmarket took a commanding 2-0 Series lead as Roberto Rodriguez drove in Scott Fullerton with a game winning, walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the 9th inning, giving the Mules a 5-4 win over the Blue Hawks. The Mules would take a 3-1 lead after five innings on the back of an RBI single from Rodriguez and sac fly off the bat of Alberto Flores. Exeter would tie the game in the top of the sixth on a two run homerun from Ivan Aguilar. The score would remain tied until the ninth when Fullerton lead off the inning with a single, Patrick Lafontaine would walk and Juan Escobedo would sacrifice both of them into scoring position. Exeter would then intentionall walk Fernando Peralta, and on a 0-1 pitch, Rodriguez would lace a single to center, scoring Fullerton. The news was not all good though as Jesus Flores had to leave the game in the 4th with a strained pectoral muscle and is questionable to make his next start.

Game Three- Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Exeter Blue Hawk offense finally woke up as they hit five homeruns between the 7th and 8th innings to get back into the Series, beating the Mules 8-4. Newmarket took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a three run homerun by Alberto Flores, and after Sergio Hernandez hit a pinch hit homerun in the 7th, making the score 4-1, things were looking good for the Mules. Kunitaro Asano and Ivan Aguilar went back to back in the 7th, and two batters later, Tony Miranda hit a two run shot, giving the Blue Hawks a 5-4 win. The 8th inning then saw John Ridell hit a solo shot and three batters later, rookie Jesus Flores, who didn't play in the majors until the playoffs started, hit a two run shot, giving Exeter some breathing room.

Game Four- After pitching the first four innings, without allowing a baserunner, Exeter got to Jesus Guardado for three runs, and tying the series at two games each, beating the Mules 4-3. Fernando Peralta and Roberto Rodriguez would give Newmarket a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the 5th inning before the Blue Hawks would score three times, capped by a two run HR off the bat of Tony Miranda. Newmarket would tie it in the 8th on a throwing error by Miranda, but in the bottom of the inning, pinch hitter Fransisco Martinez would deposit a 2-1 pitch into the right field seats, giving the Blue Hawks the lead for good.

Game Five- RBI doubles from Ivan Aguilar, Tony Miranda and Rafael Delgado helped Exeter beat Newmarket 3-1, sweeping all three games in Exeter and bring the Blue Hawks within one game of their first ever World Championship. Jesus Flores struggled with his injured pectoral muscle, but battled through five innings, allowing 11 hits and three runs, while Andrew Johnson struck out 10 over seven innings of work.

Game Six- A wild sixth game saw Exeter lose a 5-1 lead and then score three times off 3 time All-star closer John Coury in the ninth inning as the Blue Hawks beat the Mules 9-7 and win their first World Championship! Exeter took a 5-1 lead after just two innings, knocking Juan Jose Fernandez out of the game behind an RBI single from Ivan Aguilar and a 2-run homerun from Kunitaro Asano in the 2nd inning. Newmarket would score three times in the fourth on a two run blast from Alberto Flores and solo HR from Mario Saenz, and two more in the 6th behind a 2-run HR from backup C Brad Ford, playing in place of struggling Luis Ortiz, giving the Mules a 6-5 lead. Each team would score in the 8th, making the score 7-6 Newmarket with John Coury coming in to close it out. He struggled from the beginning though, allowing a walk and 3 singles to four of the first five batters, and after Josh Price drove home Tony Miranda, Exeter had a 9-7 lead, and when Roberto Rodriguez grounded out to short in the bottom of the inning, Exeter had won the World Championship.

October/November News and Notes

-Alot of action out of Newmarket the past two months. Having seen during the World Series that their pitching was not up to par when facing the killer offenses of the Southern League, the Mules went out and signed the top two free agent Pitchers that have proven track records against SL competition. First, they signed the only Pitcher of the Year Award winner the Southern League has ever known, Chris Briggs away from the Gloucester Fishermen to a 4 year contract, that will pay the 33 year old lefty $16 million dollars. Briggs, the NEBL's, all-time wins leader, was 17-8 with a 2.60 ERA last year in Gloucester. He started 29 games, covering 211 1/3 innings, allowing just 167 hits and 40 walks while striking out 190. 2009 was his best year, going 21-7 with a 2.42 ERA in 31 starts.
Chris Briggs career Stats:

-
Next, they signed 30 year old lefty Felipe Garcia away from the Nashua Titans to a 5 year, 10 million dollar deal
. Garcia was injured most of last year, so Newmarket is hoping he regains his past form. He was 6-2 with a 2.74 ERA in just 11 starts a year ago for the Titans. In 2009 though, he was 18-4 with a league leading 2.03 ERA. He had pitched in 30 games, 208 1/3 innings, giving up 185 hits, walking 36 and striking out 162 batters. He is expected to slot in the #3 spot in the rotation behind Pitcher of the Year winners Jesus Guardado and Briggs.
Felipe Garcia's career Stats:

-Having made both of these signings allowed Newmarket to deal from a position of strength, and they used this to bolster their minor league system. Dealing with a Nashua team that needed to replace Garcia, the Mules acted quickly, sending P Jesus Flores to the Titans for star IF prospect Augusto "Spud" Lima. Last year was Flores finest season as he went 17-9 with a 3.29 ERA in 31 starts for Newmarket. He pitched 216 1/3 innings, giving up 195 hits, walking 53 and striking out 174. Lima, the 5th highest rated prospect in all of baseball, hit .293 with 11 homeruns and 69 RBI in 98 games at AAA. He also provides blazing speed, having stolen 40 bases in 52 chances a year ago. He will be moved to second base in the Newmarket organization, and will start the 2011 season at AAA Louisville.
Augusta Lima's Career Stats:

-Marblehead trades OF Jesus Pinto to the Portland Bulldogs for RP Dave Harrison and a minor league infielder. Pinto hit .307 a year ago with eight HR and 53 RBI along with 30 doubles after hitting .262 6-32 in 2009. Harrison struggled a year ago, going 0-4 with a 6.92 ERA and 2 saves in 15 games. 2010 was a far cry from 2009 for Harrison when he went 4-1 witha 1.74 ERA and one save in 31 games for Portland.

-Portland continued to reshape their team, sending RP Will Klein to the Manchester Lancers for SS Ray Irvin. Klein was 3-5 with a 4.96 ERA between Portland and Gloucester a year ago. He appeared in 32 games, pitching 45 1/3 innings, allowing 30 hits and 30 walks with 49 strikeouts. Irvin spent the year with both Portsmouth and Manchester, where he hit a combined .270 with one homerun and 21 RBI along with eight doubles and four triples in 185 AB.

-Reliever Peter Ellis and the Nashua Titans have agreed on a one year contract worth $1.396 million dollars. The 30 year old was 2-2 with a 2.14 ERA and one save with the Peabody Tanners a year ago. He pitched in 27 games, covering 33 2/3 innings, giving up 31 hits and 11 walks while striking out 23. He was Peabody's closer in the inaugural NEBL season of 2008 where he saved 15 games and posted a 2.91 ERA in 36 games.

-The Portland Bulldogs solidifed the back end of their bullpen this week, signing closer Jerry "Crayon" Ward away from the Portsmouth Clippers to a 4 year contract worth just over $2 million per year
. Last year, the 32 year old Ward was 2-3 with a 1.89 ERA and 21 saves in 33 games for the Clippers. He pitched 33 1/3 innings, allowing 26 hits and just six walks, striking out 36. He saved 61 games over three seasons for Portsmouth and leaves their all-time saves leader.

-The Beverly Panthers made their first significant Free Agent signing this week, bringing on Harry Behan on a three year contract worth $1,607,000 per year. Last year for Portsmouth, Garcia hit .236 with 16 HR and 63 RBI along with 26 doubles in 120 games. Garcia has proven to be a very durable player, missing just one game in the three year history of the NEBL. His best year came in 2008, when he hit .314 with 26 homeruns and 90 RBI for the Clippers.

-The Salem Witches have come to terms with reliever Javier Valenzuela on a three year contract worth just over 1.4 million dollars. Valenzuela was 3-7 with a 3.33 ERA and 2 saves in 36 games for Portsmouth a year ago. The 32 year old reliever had his best year in 2009, when he was 1-2 with a tiny 1.38 ERA and one save for the Clippers, his first year in Portsmouth. Last year, he pitched in 46 innings, allowing 37 hits and 11 walks, while striking out 53.

-The Bangor Crusaders have traded 25 year old C Domingo Ayala to the Lowell River Hawks for 26 year old SS Carlos Vazquez. Vazquez hit .249 with 11 homeruns and 52 RBI for the Nashua Titans last year, in 113 games, before being claimed during the expansion draft by the River Hawks.

-The Manchester Lancers have sent 27 year old OF Robin Forman to the Oyster River Bobcats for 1B Patrick Gilbert. Forman was a .224 hitter with four homeruns and 28 RBI last year, his rookie season for the Lancers, while Gilbert hit just .236, but pounded out 27 homeruns and drove in 76 for the Bobcats. He appeared in 120 games and struck out 103 times.

-The Newmarket Mules have taken a chance on a young Canadien pitcher, who scouts say show tremendous promise as they signed Dominic "Digger" Proulx to a three year contract worth $1,000,000 per year. He will start the season at AAA Louisville, but any injuries or better than expected progress could see him with the big club this year.

Before the season starts, I think now would be a good time to show some career leaders in the NEBL at the beginning of year four. All-Time leaders will be next!

-We weren't planning on making any deals this early in the season, but the Lowell River Hawks made us an offer we couldn't refuse. We sent 33 year old P Jose Barron to Lowell in exchange for 24 year old C prospect Rafael Gutierrez. Barron has struggled early on, combined with his $3m a year contract for the next three years, made it an easy decision when the River Hawks came calling. Barron was 2-1 with an 11.37 ERA in four games. Last year though he was fantastic, going 2-3 with a 2.95 ERA and 2 saves in 33 games, covering 64 innings. Gutierrez played for Danvers last year, hitting just .169 with five homeruns and 17 RBI in 88 games, and for his career, is a .199 hitter and has 15 HR and 50 RBI in 209 games, all with Danvers.

-Tom Bell and the Nashua Titans have agreed on a new three year contract worth $1.25 million a year. Bell has been outstanding on the young season, going 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA in three starts. He has given up just 11 hits and five walks in 23 innings, striking out 17. Last year he was 13-9 with 3.79 ERA in 29 starts for Nashua.

-Jon Benson of the Portland Bulldogs has gotten off to a red hot start. Through 11 games, Benson is hitting .516 (16-31) with five homeruns and 13 RBI. He has also added a .609 OBP chipping in with 13 walks against just five strikeouts.

Next up for the Mules are three games at home, playing host to the Orono Red Riot, followed by three games up in Augusta, against the Moose.

-Bangor and OF Aurelio Barron have come to terms on a new three year deal that will keep Barron in Bangor until his 35th birthday. The deal calls for him to be paid a total of $5,895,000. The 32 year old Barron is hitting .312 with five homeruns and 23 RBI on the year and is a career .291 hitter with 66 homeruns and 261 RBI in 380 games, all with the Crusaders.

Minor League Update:

Eduardo "Boy Scout" Delgado (11-5 1.85 @ AAA last year)--(59/70/63-59/72/65)--Had amazing year at AAA last year. His numbers across the board were staggering: 27 games, 21 starts 155 2/3 IP 114 H 169/33 K/BB ratio. Also posted 0.95 WHIP and .201 opponent BA and gave up just six homeruns. Will probably start 2012 in the Mules bullpen.

Augusto "Spud" Lima (.301 10-56 @ AAA last year)--(54/78/43/37/77-54/83/58/56/84)--Acquired from Nashua in the offseason for Jesus Flores, Lima should be the starting SS next year for Newmarket. Had 23 doubles and five triples in just under 300 AB's. Walked 25 times and struck out 55, and also stole 31 bases in 40 attempts.

Jose Reyes (.233 1-25 @ AA last year)--(49/82/18/30/32-58/91/38/56/47)--Reyes continues to slip down the prospect list for the Mules as he can't stay healthy. He required rotator cuff surgery towards the end of last season and hasn't played at all this year and may not. Did hit 15 doubles in 233 at-bats, so the gap to gap power is still there, but he's running low on chances.

Sergio Aguirre (.299 5-18 @ AA)--(44/54/42/48/45-64/77/47/51/85)--Signed as an international Free Agent, Aguirre made an impact right away, hitting just .200, but slugging nine homeruns in 202 AB's for AA. Has a teriffic eye at the plate as well, posting a 22/21 BB/K ratio thusfar on the year. Should be in line for a starting job within a year or two, or at least challenging for Sergio Hernandez spot on the bench for the Mules.

Tony Cordova (12-9 2.89 @ AA last year)--(53/63/39-53/63/47)-
Non prospect has transformed himself into a solid young thrower. Started 27 games a year ago, pitching 196 innings and allowing juts 174 hits, while walking 51 and strikig out 178. Will finish out the year at AA and next year will be in the rotation in AAA.

Next up for Newmarket will be three games at home against the Augusta Moose, followed by three games on the road in Portland against the Bulldogs. I will also begin to post information about the other teams, especially in the Southern League so that everyone can get to know them a little better.

News and Notes:

NL Player of the Week: Alberto Flores (Newmarket) .522 (12-23) 4-13
SL Player of the Week: Howard Flanagan (Manchester) .455 (10-22) 2-7

-The Bangor Crusaders have traded former Newmarket Mules OF Mario Decos and a minor leaguer to the Gloucester Fishermen in exchange for 34 year old 3B Aaron Baker. Decos is hitting .293 4-18 this year and has 57 career homeruns. Baker was hitting just .224 0-4 in 49 AB's this season. His best year came in '08, when he hit .281 11-61 with 30 homeruns.

-The Lowell River Hawks send 23 year old RP Dan Koch to the Dover Green Wave for a pair of minor leaguers. Koch was 1-1 with a 2.13 ERA in 25 innings for Lowell on the season. He had also posted an impressive 30/6 K/BB ratio.

-Dover then turned around and sent 1B Martin Zamora to the Beverly Panthers for two minor league infielders. Zamora had put up some nice power numbers this year, smacking 11 homeruns and driving in 27 in 123 at-bats to go along with a .268 average.

-The Peabody Tanners have agreed on a new three year contract with star OF Ray Odom worth $9.75 million dollars. The 36 year old Odom is hitting .316 with five homeruns and 30 RBI on the year. He is the Tanners all time leader in homeruns (71) and RBI (260) and is 2nd all time in BA (.325) and SLG (.552).

-A pair of second basemen suffered significant injuries this week as first Portsmouth 2B Cris Feliciano will miss the next 2-3 months with a fractured cheekbone suffered after being hit in the face with a pitch this week. Feliciano was hitting .288 with 4 homeruns and 20 RBI. Meanwhile, the news was even worse for Frank Rockwell of the Bangor Crusaders, who will miss the rest of the season and possibly part of next year with a torn abdominal muscle suffered while running the bases. He was hitting .239 3-21, a down year after hitting .255 6-38 last year and .311 14-59 in '09.

Ending May and into June for Newmarket are three games at home against the Oyster River Bobcats followed by three in Bangor to square off against the Crusaders. End of the month stats, league standings and league leaders will also be up after the Bobcat series.
