USBL and the Memphis Legends

League Premise
The United States Baseball League starts in 1995. Currently the league is in 2005. The league is started by Charlie Lowe who starts the league to bring baseball back from the scandles that caused is to fold under a cloud of corruption at the end of the 1994 season. None of the players from MLB are allowed to play in the league.

In 1995 12 teams started with the USBL. Initially, Lowe did not know whether to name the league the USBL or the IBL for International Baseball League. He didn't yet have the infrastructure in place for a team in Mexico or Canada but he was sure that someday he would. Regardless, he goes with the name USBL and will change it if the league is successful and he desires for it to expand outside of the US.

The Characters
Charlie Lowe--Commissioner of the USBL. He is a successful businessman and family man. He made is forturne from the trucking and long haul transportation industry. He owns a company headquartered in Lebanon, MO called Lowe Trucking. He is well known for getting things down throughout Southern Missouri and he is a man you don't want on your bad side. He is a man who would be at his ideal weight if he were 6'5" but alas he is only 5'8". He was a major follower of highschool sports...particularly basketball. He loved the team and fan camraderie and especially the intense holiday tournaments. He started the Midwest Womems Softball League (MWSL) in the early 80's which folded after 2 years and in the early 90's the Missouri Governors League (MGL) which was a professional mens baseball league based soley in Missouri. The MGL would fold after 3 years but it layed inroads and created infrastrucure for the USBL to take over when a baseball void was left by corruption and folding of MLB.

Brice Harrison--Charlie Lowe's grandson who is the GM of the Memphis Legends. Often times is chided because many believe he is given special treatment.

Hub Capps--Writer for the The Baseball Network which is headquarted in Memphis. In addition he is assigned to cover the Memphis Legends.

The Baseball Network--A Multimedia network that produces both a 24 hr. baseball network and daily columns focusing on each team in the USBL. TBN has assigned writers to cover each team and their columns are published in the local newspapers for each of the teams.

The Memphis Legends--Often times called "The First Team of Baseball" by Lowe and later picked up by Capps in his columns due to the fact that this was the first team established in the USBL. The Legends get their roots from the Lebanon Yellow Jackets of the MGL.

The Jose Delgado incident--Lowe was a big believer in baseball being America's game. He did not deny that one day that there should be professional teams in other countries however until that time he felt baseball should be played by Americans. At the start of the inagural 1995 season Lowe grandfathers in all foreigners but states that teams should no longer sign players who are not United States citizens. However, he does not officially ban them and states that he wants to work with owners on how best to proceed. Regardless, Brice Harrison and the Memphis Legends scout foreign players and on July 19th 1995 signs 22 y.o. Dominican catcher Jose Delgado. Lowe comes out with a foreign player ban the following day on July 20th. There was an outcry from the media and fans as many believed that Harrison had inside information that the ban was coming and also went against the unwritten rule of not signing foreign players. He was the only GM to break this rule during this period. It was particularly troubling to many other GM's and owners as Delgado was scouted as a very athletic and remarkable 5 tool catcher.

Due to the scrutiny Lowe lifted the ban during the off season of 1996 only and publically chided his grandson for skirting the rules. With the ban back in place at the start of the 1996 season Delgado was promoted from AAA to the ML roster. He proceeded to be the first Legend to hit for the cycle in April and found himself playing the outfield as Jim "Ranger" Walker was the everyday catcher and viewed by many to be a mainstay at that position. Harrison and the Legends were still continuously and heavily criticized and on July 18 1996, Delgado was traded along with LF Will Martin and P Dewey Parker to the Tacoma Burners for P Keith Raines, P Allan Dodson and two minor leaguers. The foreign player ban would stay in place until 2004 until it was completely lifted with the only stipulation that American players only are eligible for the draft and foregin players are allowed to be signed as FA's.

When Harrison traded Delgado he stated "He is the most athletic catcher I have ever seen, he may be one of the greatest catchers in league history by the time his career his over".

Many years later, Lowe stated that he proceeded with the ban in reaction to his grandsons signing of Delgado and that the ban was suppose to go in place as it did at the start of the 1996 season. That while his grandson errored in breaking a gentlemans agreement between the teams and the league that the issue was made worse by the ban as the public and media saw it differently than how it actually played out.

Up Next
We will pick up the league in the middle of the 2005 season. A lot has happened between 1995 and 2005, along the way I may revisit those seasons.

1995 Memphis Legends Year end Review

November 1995
Hub Capps--TBN
Summary
The Legends placed their hopes for the future in a 23 y.o. CF Harold "Hal" McCoy who they made their #1 draft pick. He was an immediate hit with both Legends management and the fans as his work ethic and play on the field. He would contend along with Legends 1B Bartolo Depetris for the Southern League Diamond Award but both would lose out to St. Louis Aviators Juan Marin.

The Legends fueded with the Dallas Marshalls the entire year yet never was able to capture 1st place even for a day. The Legends pitching could never find any consistency as #2 starter Al Jenkins would miss a month with injury and Dewey Parker could never find the strike zone. The Legends found a gem in Mark Madison who went 8-0 in his first 8 starts. They received Madison from the NY Knights in exchange for the brooding Chet Goodman. Goodman was replaced as the starting SS with fan favorite Fraser Brewer in early May. GM Harrison fueded with Manager Sergio Lopez on Dewey Parker's play as Salas wanted him in the rotation and to be left alone to work out his kinks while Harrison was wanting him to work out the bullpen. Behind the scenes Harrison secretly blamed Parker for the fading of the team in late August.

In summary, Harrison knew he had a pitching staff that was going to cost him. He knew that for this team to win the South that he would have to have some outstanding pitching performances from average players and while it looked like he found it in Mark Madison and Robert Moore, they along with the rest of the team faded by late August. Harrison chose not to make any bold moves as he saw potential in the club even in players like Dewey Parker. He did get rid of clubhouse cancer Chet Goodman. The lineup looked like it potentially could be an All-Star lineup and Harrison went into the off-season knowing that the pitching staff and bullpen would need serious work if they were to be contender in 1996. The criticism over the Jose Delgado signing in late July seemed to start taking a toll on the team which was much beloved by the nation prior to his signing.

1996 League Recap

Going into the 1996 season the USBL added 4 teams. Later this would be seen as a haphazard and dangerous move for the young league as it was still building the infrastructure and capital needed to give a league strength. Additionally, MLB threatened lawsuits against the USBL if they used any likeness whatsoever of any MLB team. So, the league moved cautiously with the cities that it chose for its expansion. The new teams were the Orlando Neptunes, Las Vegas Kings, Madision Green Sox and the Tacoma Burners.

The Burners drew a lot of criticism as many felt that it referred to some type of drug jaron. However, the Tacoma owner was attempting to use the term in reference to a Volcano.

To save on travel costs the league split up into the Northern League and Southern league each with two divisions.

The Southern League Emerald Award drew criticism as it was given to Kip Dorsey of the Memphis Legends. Many consider him the worst ROY ever.

Also, there was controversy with Errol Blankenship being given the Diamond Award as many felt it should have gone to Baltimore catcher Harold Coleman. Blankenship hit 50 HR but plays in hitter friendly park Costner-Ford Stadium in Detroit.

Juan Marin of the St.Louis Aviators took his 2nd Southern League Diamond Award establishing himself as the premiere player of the league.

Both Tim Stephens of the LA Dragons and Luis Miguel Coldivar of the Chicago Comets won their 2nd Golden Arm Award in their respective leagues.

Memphis Legends 1996 Year in Review

November 1996
Hub Capps--TBN

Memphis Legends---Champions

Pitching
Going into the off-season GM Harrison knew that he had to get Jorge De La Rosa who was not re-signed by the St. Louis Aviators. As the Thanksgiving Holiday approached Harrison flew to De La Rosa's home in Arlington, VA and came away with a signed contract. He inked De La Rosa to a 3 yr. 8.4 mil contract in total. He brought back Robert Moore who was not dominant and barely crafty but somehow found a way to win. He also signed Bud Guyer at 1.5 mill/yr for 2 years to take over the closer role from Jacob Rowe. Guyer had never been a closer prior to this season but was a quality reliever for the Detroit Silverbacks in 1995. Additionally, Miguel Ramirez, a rare grandfathered in foreign player, was brought up from AAA Bristol and provided some energy.

As the season progressed Quinn Craighead (17-9; 3.84 ERA) may have been the ace of the staff but it was Jorge De La Rosa (20-7; 3.82 ERA)who made the difference between 1995 and 1996. De La Rosa became the Legends 1st 20 game winner and was a contender for the Golden Arm Award. Bud Guyer (1 Sv; 6.18 ERA) was a dissapointment as closer and he was pulled from the role by the last week of April and replace with unknown prospect Joe Thomas. Thomas filled the void and went on to get 30 saves. In mid-July with continual criticism from the media and fans over the Jose Delgado incident, Delgado was dealt to the expansion Tacoma Burners along with much bewildered Dewey Parker and Will Martin for the 2006 #1 draft pick LHP Keith Raines, RHP Allan Dodson and two minor leaguers. The trade was suppose to help stabilize the rotation with the addition of Dodson who replaced Dewey Parker. Dodson, like Parker, would struggle with the Legends going 3-5 with a 6.12 ERA.

In the playoffs, Dodson was almost left off the roster and was only used in 3 games with only 1 start. However, that start came in game 5 of the Championship series vs. heavily favored Chicago Comets and the cold-hearted pitching of Luis Miguel Coldivar. In that game he dominated Comet hitters and finished off a remarkable David v. Goliath story.

Going into the off-season, Harrison needs to only shore up the #4 and 5 spots in the rotation and stabilize the bullpen roles. Joe Thomas has caught lightening in a bottle with his new found closer role so don't expect Jacob Rowe to be back for the 1997 season. Also, Bud Guyer was heavily booed and almost a clubhouse distraction for his overwhelmingly poor pitching performances. Does Harrison take a 1.5 million loss and cut Guyer or try to stick with him in the last year of his contract?

Hitting

Harrison did not make any major additions to the position players for the 1996 season. The lineup for the Legends is Legendary. The only disappointment was 3B Kyle Roy who struggled with his .264 avg and lost power only hitting 12 Hr. However, he maintained a .401 OBP and brought home another Platinum Glove for his stellar defense.

Going into 1997, Harrison needs to only maintain what he has. His team is getting older, Clarence Stone (36), Fraser Brewer (32), Beau Dawson (34), Bartolo Depetris (33) may only be able to put up one more monster year collectively.
