Nathan will retire
Padres hurler will hang 'em up April 18, 2014 SAN DIEGO — Veteran reliever Joe Nathan announced this morning that he will retire at the end of the 2014 season. Nathan, 39, is in his first season with the San Diego Padres, and has worked just 1 1/3 innings to date. The veteran owns a career record of 46-37 with 264 saves and a 2.86 ERA in 542 games with Arizona Diamondbacks (2002), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2003-2007), Chicago White Sox (2007-2009), Minnesota Twins (2010-2012), Cincinnati Reds (2013) and now the Padres. His last big season as a closer came with the 2011 Twins, saving 36 games and a 2.24 ERA in 56 games. He worked 66 games in 2012, saving just 11 games and posting a career high 5.56 ERA. Nathan worked just 11 games last season with Cincinnati, going 2-2 without any saves and a 3.86 ERA in 14 innings. "Joe was a big part of our success while he was here," said Tampa Bay Devil Rays manager Christian O'Neal today after hearing of Nathan's decision. "He was a really solid guy at the back end of our bullpen, saving a lot of games. He's had a nice career." |
