I forgot to mention that San Francisco beat Las Vegas 3-0 on a 1-hitter in the NL West play-in game.
I'm very interested in the playoffs for this season. I've got my Hartford Whalers in there, for one thing. Secondly, the Cleveland Indians had a very good year at 103-59 and are determined to get back to the World Series. Third, the defending champion Washington Nationals made the playoffs at 81-81 by virtue of winning a very weak NL East. I'd like to see what kind of a fight they put up against the Houston Astros. Speaking of Houston, they were defeated last year by Washington in the NLCS, so they're looking for revenge. A lot of interesting storylines this year. Well, my Whalers looked good early, taking a 2-1 series lead against San Antonio. But they coughed up a 4-1 eighth inning lead in Game 5, and didn't put up a fight in Game 6. So it was an early playoff exit for the Whale. (Sounds familiar, doesn't it?)
In the other American League series, Baltimore was three outs from winning the series in Game 6, but Cleveland scored two runs in the bottom of the 12th to survive, and then the Indians won Game 7. In the National League, the defending champion .500 Nationals didn't put up much of a fight against 100-victory Houston, who took a 3-0 series lead and won in five games. San Francisco won the first two games at home against St. Louis, but the series momentum turned in the Gateway City where the Cardinals won all three, and then clinched in Game 6 back in the Bay area. Game 5 was pretty crazy. The Giants led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 8th, but the Cardinals scored six runs for a 6-2 lead. The Giants scored four in the top of the 9th to tie it up, only to see the Cardinals win on a two-run homer in the bottom of the 9th. So the League Championship Series will be: San Antonio Roadrunners vs. Cleveland Indians St. Louis Cardinals vs. Houston Astros Last edited by jg2977; 02-10-2009 at 10:56 PM. |

In the American League, Cleveland made quick work of San Antonio, winning in a four game sweep. Cleveland outscored San Antonio 24 to 7 in the four games.
In the National League, Houston's pitching, which was great all year, failed them miserably against St. Louis. Houston's bats did the job, but it wasn't enough. Houston won the first game while St. Louis won the last four. The Cardinals outscored the Astros 55 to 34 in the five games, including 23 runs in Game 2 alone. If you liked pitching duels, you would have hated this series. The World Series pits the St. Louis Cardinals vs. the Cleveland Indians. The Indians are back for the 2nd year in a row and are looking to win this time. The key factor will be how well the home teams perform. The Indians are 5-1 in the postseason, while the Cardinals are a perfect 6-0. Last edited by jg2977; 02-07-2009 at 09:26 PM. |

2102 World Series: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cleveland Indians
Game 4, Cleveland 7 at St. Louis 6 (12 innings)
The story of the 2102 postseason was the Cleveland Indians. After falling behind Baltimore 3-2 in the division series and being only three outs from elimination, they came back and won ten games in a row to win their first World Series title. The Indians clinched at Busch Stadium to win an exciting Game 4, 7-6 in 12 innings. St. Louis led 4-0 after one inning, but Cleveland scored three runs in the 4th and 7th innings to take a 6-4 lead. The Cardinals tied it with two runs in the 8th. But in the 12th, right fielder Jason Potter homered to give the Indians the lead, and the bullpen took care of the rest. Potter had a spectacular season, hitting .354 with 32 home runs and 103 RBI's, with a .436 OBP and 1.076 OPS. So it was only fitting that Potter was the hero. 2102 World Series Champions: Cleveland Indians |

San Francisco had to play another play-in game this year for the NL West title, but this time lost to Colorado 6-3
My Hartford Whalers are back, and the defending champion Cleveland Indians were on fire, finishing 111-51. The playoff-frustrated Houston Astros are back, too, as well as the debut champion Washington Nationals, so what more could you want? It's going to be a great October in 2103. |

While the National League playoffs were ho-hum, the American League playoffs were spectacular and surprising at the same time.
First, the repeat AL champion and defending World Series Champion Cleveland Indians, who breezed through the regular season with 111 wins, were swept by the 90-win Seattle Mariners. Cleveland almost extended the series in Game 4. The Mariners led 8-3 after three innings and 9-4 after six innings. But the Indians got a run in the seventh, two in the eighth, and four in the ninth to take an 11-9 lead. But Seattle scored three in the ninth to win the series. Seattle outscored Cleveland 30 to 21 in the shocking four game sweep. The Hartford Whalers also trailed their series 3-0. Unlike Cleveland, the Whalers' fortunes turned out to be much better. The Whalers had also lost their last six regular season games, so they were ice cold. Hartford dominated Games 4 and 5 in Kansas City, 4-0 and 8-2. But back in Hartford, they had their backs against the wall, trailing the Royals 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth. The Whale exploded for four runs, then were able to hold KC to a run in the ninth to eke out a 6-5 victory and tie the series. In Game 7, the Whale led 3-1 in the top of the ninth, but allowed the Royals to tie it up. In the bottom of the ninth, Hartford led off with a leadoff single and a stolen base. After a flyout, there was an intentional walk. The Whalers then stole 3rd base. Another intentional walk loaded the bases with one out. On a 1-2 count, the Royals catcher allowed a passed ball, and the Whalers completed a miraculous four-game comeback! In the NL, the Pirates and Astros won their series fairly easily. So the League Championship Series is: Seattle Mariners vs. Hartford Whalers Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Houston Astros Last edited by jg2977; 02-10-2009 at 10:41 PM. |

You just can't make this stuff up.
These are the most spectacular playoffs that any sport on planet Earth, or the whole universe for that matter, has ever seen. First, the National League. The two powerhouse teams in the NL in 2103 faced each other for the pennant. Pittsburgh vs. Houston. Both teams were very good at home. Houston was 53-28, Pittsburgh was 51-30. So what were the chances that all seven games would be won by the road team? Not very good. But that's what happened. There was already one wild game in the NLCS, Game 4. Houston scored a run in the top of the ninth to avoid defeat, then went on to score three more in the fourteenth to win 9-7. But that was nothing compared to Game 7. Houston led 5-3, poised to end the home teams' drought and clinch a World Series berth. But Pittsburgh proceeded to score nine runs to win 12-5. That basically sums that up. Then there was the ALCS. Seattle vs. Hartford. The Hartford Whalers, perhaps emotionally wasted from their emotional high when they erased a 3-0 series deficit versus Kansas City, fell behind in the series 3-0 against the Mariners. Seattle now improved their postseason record to a perfect 7-0. There was no way that they could fail to reach the World Series. And even thinking that the Whalers could do the impossible again was, well, unthinkable. Game 4 in Seattle. The Whalers trailed 5-4 going to the eighth. It's all over, right? Wrong. The Whale scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to stave off elimination and win, 7-5. Let's move to Game 5. Tied 1-1 in the sixth on the road, the Whale still weren't ready to go home for the winter and scored five runs in the last three innings to win 6-2. That made the Whalers 5-0 in elimination games. As a Hartford Whalers fan, I am happy to say that the memory of Game 6 of the 2103 ALCS will live on forever for the good people of Connecticut. The hockey Hartford Whalers, more than a century ago, had suffered brutal defeats to the rival Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins. Furthermore, the city of Hartford suffered a crushing blow when they lost their beloved NHL team to Raleigh, North Carolina, of all places. Nine years later, the Carolina Hurricanes (some people from Connecticut call them the Whalercanes) won the Stanley Cup. Despite this, Hartford was getting poised to become the new home of the New England Patriots, only to have their owner, Robert Kraft, screw Hartford. He ended up building a new stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and the Patriots went on to win three Super Bowls shortly thereafter. The baseball Hartford Whalers were determined to give the people of Connecticut a gift that they would never forget. So we come to Game 6 back in Hartford. Seattle jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings and led 4-1 going to the bottom of the ninth. The people of Seattle were ready to celebrate an AL Championship, and the Whalers' luck had finally run out. The Hartford fans were getting ready to give their team a standing ovation for all of the resiliency that they had shown, despite the fact that their dream of seeing their team in a World Series was coming to an end. Let's go to the bottom of the ninth: Seattle with a 4-1 lead. 1st batter: Triple 2nd batter: Strikeout. One out. 3rd batter: Fly out. Two out. 4th batter: First pitch, Two-run home run. Seattle leads 4-3. 5th batter: 1-0 count. Single. 6th batter: 3-1 count. Ball four. Runners on 1st and 2nd. 7th batter: 1st pitch. Single. Runner from 2nd scores. GAME TIED 4-4! 8th batter: Walk. Bases loaded. 9th batter: Strikeout. Inning over. The Whalers had by some miracle, avoided elimination again. Down to their last out, down by three runs. The game stayed tied until the 14th. Seattle scored two runs to lead 6-4. The miracle Whalers were finished again. But miracles don't die, do they? Let's go to the bottom of the 14th: 1st batter: Single 2nd batter: Fly out. One out. 3rd batter: Single, runners on 1st and 3rd. 4th batter: Double. One run scores, tying run at 3rd, winning run at 2nd. Seattle leads 6-5. 5th batter: Single. Two runners score. HARTFORD WINS 7-6!!!! The whole city of Hartford and state of Connecticut jumped and screamed with jubilation and exhilaration. The Hartford Whalers had done the impossible again, and somehow forced a Game 7. There was no doubt in anybody's minds that they would win that game. The Seattle Mariners were dead and played like it. The Whalers completed their 2nd miraculous series comeback with a 3-0 victory and clinched a birth in the World Series. It doesn't even matter if they lose the World Series. What the Whalers just accomplished is better than winning ten World Series in a row. I just wonder how the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners are going to come back from this. So two teams who have no right being in the World Series are facing against each other. The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Hartford Whalers. Stay tuned to see what happens. And don't even try to predict this. You can't. Last edited by jg2977; 02-08-2009 at 12:52 AM. |

Remember 1986? How it should have been the California Angels vs. the Houston Astros in the World Series? And it ended up being the Boston Red Sox vs. the New York Mets? Well, what happened in 2103 reminds me of 1986. In my fictional universe, it should be the Seattle Mariners vs. the Houston Astros. But we're going to end up watching the Hartford Whalers vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates.
I wish this was real. |

2103 World Series: Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Hartford Whalers
Game 2: Pittsburgh 4 at Hartford 7
The Whalers are not going to come back from a 3-0 series deficit again. This time, they don't have to. They won 7-4 in Hartford to break the Pirates' 7-game road winning streak and even the World Series at one game apiece. The Whale broke open a 3-3 tie in the sixth innning with 3 runs and held on for the victory. World Series tied 1-1 |
