Pastime Baseball League ![]() April Review (cont.) Northern League Report The Sacramento Stingers, who came 1 loss shy of 100 last year despite having the Northern League Outstanding Hitter, have started quickly and sit tied for the West division lead with the defending champion Wichita Brigade. While not excelling in any aspect, the Stingers have gotten solid pitching and offense, ranking 3rd in runs and ERA. And they have gotten off to the strong start without George Hall, who tore his hamstring the first week of spring training and is just returning. That should counter the loss of Socks Seybold, who hit four homers in the first two weeks then went out with a hamstring injury of his own. He's expected back in mid-May. Wichita has won its last 7, keeping up it's streaky start - win 3, lose 3, win 3, lose 5, win 7. Jay Hughes, who won 18 games a year ago, has yet to take the hill this season but is active. Rube Waddell, who won 27 games a year ago as the Northern League's Outstanding Pitcher, is back at it again, leading the NL in strikeouts for a staff that, as it did a year ago, leads the league in pitching. And yet, the team in the West drawing the most notice is the Chicago Hitmen. Babe Ruth has shown no need for a learning curve, tied for the PBL lead in RBIs with 26 in his first month. The Hitmen, who went 58-104 last year, have started 10-12 - though they have lost 8 of 11. Albert Pujols is tied for third in the NL in batting. It seems, for now anyway, the odd man out in the abundance of bats is Mark Teixeira, whose .180 spring did little to help his cause. Josh Hamilton is in center, Ruth is in left, Pujols is at first and Adam Dunn is the DH. In the East, the New York Heroes have the NL's ERA and wins leaders - Jim McCormick (1.84) and Bill Byrd (5), respectively. The only starting pitcher not throwing well so far is Harry Howell, who won 19 games a year ago but sits currently with an ERA over 6. The Heroes are chased presently by the Louisville Racers, who are riding Dan Brouthers and Roy Oswalt - the same horses who led them last year - as far as they will carry them. Shortstop Hughie Jennings, who hit .250 last year as a late-season callup, is batting .310 with 4 homers so far. AWARDS Player of the Week 4/12 2B Hardy Richardson - Louisville Racers 4/19 CF Austin Kearns - Charlotte Cougars 4/26 LF Jimmy Sheckard - Wichita Brigade Batter of the Month LF Jimmy Sheckard - Wichita Brigade Pitcher of the Month SP Bill Byrd - New York Heroes Rookie of the Month SP Bill Byrd - New York Heroes

Pastime Baseball League ![]() April Review (cont.) Southern League Report It's too early to say, only a month into the season, but Walter Alston's New Orleans Knights look to be ready for the pennant race everyone sought last year during their great comeback effort. The Knights lead the Southern League East division, up two games on the Memphis Strummers, who they took 2 of 3 from in Memphis in the season's opening week. Sam Thompson leads the way for the Knights, as he did last season, batting .337 with 4 homers and 17 RBI so far. And, while Doc McJames is throwing well, the key right now is the emergence of Mark Prior. After a horrendous start last season, Prior ended up 10-8 with a respectable 3.81 ERA. That growth has continued this year, as Prior took home the Pitcher of the Month award for April, going 4-0 with a 2.59 ERA. Close in the rearview mirror are the Strummers, who saw a pair of 20+ game hitting streaks during the month. Cap Anson carried over a 15-game streak from last season, hitting in his first nine this year before his streak ended at 24 games. Oscar Charleston carried a 5-game streak into the year and hit in his first 18 before it ended at 23 games. Charleston has been a machine so far, hitting .430 with 7 homers, his hitting streak, a cycle and a 6-hit game in the season's first month. He's getting support from Anson and Ryan Braun, who has hit 7 homers as well after knocking 17 out of the park all last season. In the West, San Antonio has gotten off to a strong start despite the struggles of ace and reiging Outstanding Pitcher Noodles Hahn (2-2, 9.47). Brandon Webb has stepped up to lead the PBL in ERA at 1.60, and at the plate the team is getting top efforts from Hugh Duffy (.344, 16 RBI) - shaking off the horror of last season - and, in a surprise, Ryan Spilborghs (.359-5-16), who hit for the cycle against Los Angeles on April 10. What the Arizona Sandmen hoped for has happened, as the electric Jose Reyes has been a vital cog at the top of the order, batting .357 with 4 steals and a surprising 5 homers. Reyes DHing against lefties and playing second against righties has allowed rookie Willie Wells to jump right in to the shortstop slot, get comfortable and contribute - batting .326. Nap Lajoie is playing second against lefties and first against righties, hitting all the while (.397, 6, 20). AWARDS Player of the Week 4/12 RF Sam Thompson - New Orleans Knights 4/19 CF Oscar Charleston - Memphis Strummers 4/26 CF Oscar Charleston - Memphis Strummers Batter of the Month Oscar Charleston - Memphis Strummers Pitcher of the Month Mark Prior - New Orleans Knights Rookie of the Month Buck Freeman - Orlando Orcas |

Hope that style of recap works well. Basically the monthly reports will be four posts...standings, leaders, Northern League recap, Southern League recap. Far less time consuming than how I did last season. I will do the newspaper style writeups once September gets here to cover pennant races, though.

Josh Hamilton is the starting RF for the Hitmen, and seems to be blooming more quickly than in real life. So far, in 48 games, he's .306-7-33. Chick Stahl is in center, Ruth is in left and Adam Dunn is the DH.

That makes more sense. Up above it said Hamilton in center which I thought was strange.

They still have Johan Santana in the bullpen. It may be another year before he develops into a starter for them as he's still fighting control problems - as he did in real life. |

Pastime Baseball League ![]() May Review (cont.) Northern League Report As it ended last season, the New York Heroes and the Wichita Brigade lead the way in the East and West, respectively. Yet the story for each has plenty more wrinkles. For Wichita, the Brigade has weathered an injury to Rube Waddell, who's having a subpar season (3-4, 4.48). He's since returned, missing 3 starts, but was blistered in this last outing for 8 runs and 11 hits over 6 innings. But Al Orth has been stellar (6-1, 2.84) and Jonas Gaines leads the team in wins with 8, against 3 losses, with a 3.21 ERA. Wichita is only playing .500 ball on the road, but is 16-3 at home. Virtually the entire offense is contributing, although the team now must weather the loss of LF Jimmy Sheckard, the Northern League Batter of the Month for April, who was hitting .372 with 6 homers and 29 RBI when he went down with a ruptured achilles tendon on May 15, likely finishing him for the season. As for New York, the Heroes have inexplicably altered their rotation from last season, despite its success. Sam Weaver (13-8, 2.94 in '09) is setting up closer Jonathan Papelbon, while Jack Taylor - who swung from pen to rotation last year (9-7, 3.04) - has yet to throw a pitch. Instead, Bill Drake and Bill Byrd have moved from the pen into the rotation, with Byrd having won a Northern League-best 8 games to this point. The youngsters they hoped would lift them, Grady Sizemore (.311-3-20) and David Wright (.300-7-39) have done that and more, though Sizemore has been sidelined with a concerning back problem. Wright was torrid in May, hitting in 25 straight games for a .351 average on the month and earning Northern League Batter of the Month honors for May. Second-round pick Irish Meusel (.297-7-36) and fifth-rounder Jim Viox (.332-4-28) have stepped in and hit right from the start, lifting an already solid offense. The Louisville Racers trail New York by eight games, as what last year was the PBL's most potent offense now sits sixth in the Northern League. Dan Brouthers (.311-9-38) remains solid, though not off-the-charts as he was last year. Combined with the terrible starts of 2B Hardy Richardson (.183-4-24) and C Heinie Peitz (.191-4-15), and Louisville is lacking its old firepower. Something is going to have to give in Sacramento, where the Stingers' new pitching pickups - Bob Shawkey (1-5, 6.51) and Wilbur Cooper (3-2, 5.87) - are failing to get it done. Last year's NL Outstanding Hitter, George Hall (.266-2-13, in 28 games), has returned from his hamstring injury but is yet to get going. While only four games behind Wichita, Sacramento is also only four games ahead of a Chicago team whose improvement is drawing notice throughout the league. The Hitmen lead the Northern League in runs scored, averaging more than 6 a game on the strength of a PBL-best 59 homers. While Babe Ruth (.285-12-43) has drawn much of the attention as the PBL's top pick, the elevated games of Albert Pujols (.325-8-34) and Josh Hamilton (.306-7-33) have helped the Hitmen to an improved opening to the year. They do, however, maintain a losing record. That is the fault primarily of a shaky rotation, particularly Amos Rusie (2-6, 6.32) and Monte Ward (4-4, 5.94). The bullpen of Johan Santana, Pink Hawley, Brian Bruney and closer Bobby Jenks has a league-best ERA of 2.77. Rusie is safe, but if Santana (0-2, 5.53) shows some consistency out of the pen, Ward could lose his spot. AWARDS Player of the Week 5/3 CF Fielder Jones - New York Heroes 5/10 1B Jake Beckley - Indianapolis Engines 5/17 3B David Wright - New York Heroes 5/24 CF Fielder Jones (2) - New York Heroes 5/31 RF Socks Seybold - Sacramento Stingers Batter of the Month 3B David Wright - New York Heroes Pitcher of the Month SP Jim McCormick - New York Heroes Rookie of the Month SS Mike Moynahan - Wichita Brigade |

Pastime Baseball League ![]() May Review (cont.) Southern League Report With a little more than a quarter of the season complete, the New Orleans Knights hope to turn 2010 into a reversal of 2009, forcing the Memphis Strummers to chase them instead. The Knights carry a slim two game lead as we start June, and will host a three-game set against Memphis starting tonight. Sam Thompson (.281-8-27) has been solid but unspectacular after his runner-up finish in last year's Outstanding Hitter voting. But the Knights offense has been buoyed by doubles machine SS George Wright (.308-9-29), who has 23 already this season, LF Topsy Hartsel (.308-4-35) and CF Curtis Granderson (.333-4-34). And, despite batting only .229, DH Prince Fielder leads the Southern League with 47 RBI. Ace Doc McJames (6-5, 4.14) continues to struggle, but the slack has been picked up by Mark Prior (8-1, 2.58), whose late-season growth of 2009 has evolved into staff-leading stuff in 2010. As for Memphis, it starts with Oscar Charleston, who leads the PBL in hitting at .425 - 50 points above the next closest batter. Charleston (.425-8-34) and RF Ichiro Suzuki (.351-1-16) have set the table and then some for 3B Ryan Braun (.255-10-44), who stands third in the PBL in RBIs. Still lagging is Cap Anson (.236-2-20), who the Strummers hope will get going soon as a hamstring injury has Suzuki shelved for the next three weeks or so. C Deacon White, who hit .321-20-110 a year ago, is stuck at .251 this season with five homers and 29 RBI. Pitching has been solid, as the Strummers boast the league's top bullpen - which has a 2.51 collective ERA thus far. Watch the Orlando Orcas in the next month to see if they fade or hang around. Their pitching is poor, a sign of a likely fade, but the offense is second in runs behind RBI leader 3B Ezra Sutton (.373-8-48), powerhouse 1B Ryan Howard (.265-10-30) and RF Sam Crawford (.330-8-21). Out west, it's all San Antonio, as the Sheriffs lead Arizona by 10 games and seem poised to make it a runaway. Brandon Webb (6-2, 2.35) leads the staff, which is still waiting for Noodles Hahn (6-4, 5.80) to rediscover his form of last year's Outstanding Pitcher campaign. He seems on his way, though: after a putrid April (2-2, 9.47), he went 4-2 with a 3.47 ERA in May, though his strikeout rate remains a fraction of last year's blistering pace. AWARDS Player of the Week 5/3 2B Jose Reyes - Arizona Sandmen 5/10 LF Harry Stovey - Los Angeles Idols 5/17 1B Ryan Howard - Orlando Orcas 5/24 C Deacon White - Memphis Strummers 5/31 LF Mike Donlin - Los Angeles Idols Batter of the Month LF Topsy Hartsel - New Orleans Knights Pitcher of the Month Dick Rudolph - San Antonio Sheriffs Rookie of the Month SS George Wright - New Orleans Knights |
