Yeah, June blew up each of the divisions. New York went 19-8, Wichita went 21-6, New Orleans went 20-8 and San Antonio went 18-10. These guys are making it very tough to catch them.

That Chicago offense is scary! The pitching staff just can't get it together. Cy Young and Rube Foster are carrying the whole load right now.

June Review (cont.)

Northern League Report

There is certainly a lot of season left, but the New York Heroes and Wichita Brigade spent the last month doing everything in their power to make the regular season end early.

We start in New York, where the Heroes played better than .700 ball in June despite a four-game losing streak in the middle that included a three-game sweep at Wichita. They wrapped up the month, however, winning 11 of 13 - most recently an 11-2 thrashing of Chicago in the opener of a four-game set.

Six of New York's nine regulars hit better than .300 for the month - paced by Fielder Jones' .347 and Roger Connor's .342 - and eight of the nine drove in double digits. On the hill, Jim McCormick posted his worst monthly ERA thus far (3.86), but went 6-0 on the month; while Red Ehret and Bill Byrd went a combined 4-1 with an ERA of 1.99. Simply, there is little the Heroes are doing wrong right now.

Yet the story is the defending champs. Wichita went 21-6 in June, opening up a 16-game lead in the West. Lose Jimmy Sheckard and his then-league leading .372 average for the season? No problem. Watch starter Jonas Gaines - your best pitcher this season (10-4, 3.34) - leave start in Sacramento and ultimately find out he's done for a year with Tommy John surgery? Piece of cake. Rube Waddell looked like the Rube Waddell of last year - finally - going 4-2 with a 2.84 ERA and striking out 59 batters in 50 2/3 innings.

The Chicago Hitmen continue to bludgeon their opponents - or at least try to. They lead the league in runs, homers and extra base hits; have the top three RBI men in the league (Babe Ruth (67), Albert Pujols (58) and Josh Hamilton (57)) and current have eight players on pace for 75+ RBIs.

So why do they remain four games below .500? Two reasons: Pitching is first. Cy Young and Rube Foster are a combined 21-9 with a 3.12 ERA. The rest of the starters? A record of 12-20 with a 5.83 ERA.

June Review (cont.)

Southern League Report

As was the case in the Northern League, the division leaders down South created their own distance in the past month.

If there was any doubt, the New Orleans Knights are for real. Leading the Southern League in runs and boasting the league's second-best ERA, the Knights have put themselves 12 games ahead of the second place Orlando Orcas.

Five hitters have double digit homers, and team also leads all of baseball in OBP at .358. Rookie shortstop George Wright (.290-12-42) is on place to score more than 130 runs, as Sam Thompson (.278-16-46), Topsy Hartsel (.293-11-59) and Prince Fielder (.250-10-58) drive him in with regularity.

Key to New Orleans' surge has been the continued dominance of Mark Prior (14-1, 2.32) and the return to form of Doc McJames (8-8, 3.40), who posted a 1.99 ERA in June.

If Orlando could get any pitching, they could make gains on New Orleans. But a powerhouse lineup including Ryan Howard (.288-19-51), Ezra Sutton (.344-11-62) and Rookie of the Year contender Buck Freeman (.307-15-49) is negated by a rotation that has posted a collective ERA of 5.25.

The defending Southern League champion Memphis Strummers have seen a collective collapse of their offense besides the dominant Oscar Charleston. Ryan Braun (.263-13-60) has cooled off and Cap Anson (.260-4-30) is far off his pace of last season, when he drove in 128 runs.

Out west, the San Antonio Sheriffs have the league's best pitching staff, anchored by Brandon Webb (8-5, 2.64), Ted Trent (10-3, 3.15) and rookie Dick Rudolph (7-2, 2.75). That doesn't even factor last year's Outstanding Pitcher Noodles Hahn (9-7, 5.18) who has improved but is far from the force he was last season, when he struck out a whopping 383 batters.

Key to San Antonio's success - and 15-game lead - has been Hugh Duffy (.326-10-58), who has made Sheriffs fans forget all about last year's struggles.

AWARDS

I find myself rooting for Chicago more and more, and getting disappointed with each update. Maybe the Hitmen will trade a spare bat for a third pitcher.

Its funny that there are four really good teams, one at .500, and the rest below. What's the upcoming draft class looking like?

I think the new format for updates is working out real well by the way.

Yeah, Chicago definitely has the most recognizable names of any of the rosters. I knew that starting the league as I did, with players from before 1900 and since 2000, a lot of people wouldn't get into following old players they never heard of. But I thought it made a good basis for the start. And I like the block of years being a draft class thing.

Don't be disappointed...they'll grow, and I believe they are the youngest team in the league. They just happen to be in the division with the defending champs (whom I neglected to mention they are 8-5 against this season). Really, Chicago has played HORRIBLY against the East division...they are doing well in their own.

Next year I need to up the trade frequency. I'm having only two or three trades a season. If I got in the 7-10 range I'd be happy.

I'm surprised at the lack of races, and a bit disappointed. My style plan was to do this format until September, then do the game-by-game coverage of the pennant races in the final month. I may not have anything to write about if this keeps up!

Glad you like the new format. I'm really enjoying it. It took me months to get to August 1st in the inaugural season. I will probably put up the August 1st update for this season tonight. In that, I'll include the All-Star rosters as well as the first glimpse of the upcoming draft class (if you can't wait, the block is guys who debuted between 1940 and 1944). Off the top of my head, Stan Musial is the top guy in that class, but I could certainly be forgetting a few.

Thanks for following. I love discussing this stuff!

Orcas Shock PBL By Dealing Howard

ORLANDO -- Three days after being named to the Southern League All-Star team for the first time after having led the Orlando Orcas in homers with 22, Ryan Howard was sent packing, dealt to the Arizona Sandmen for pitcher Webster McDonald.

"I'm stunned," Howard said of the deal. "I thought I was a big part of our success this season, closing the gap. And now to be gone..." he said before trailing off.

The deal came a little more than a week after the surprising Orcas lost rookie first baseman Buck Freeman for the season. Freeman (.309-17-54) enabled the team to put Howard at designated hitter, where he did what anyone would expect from a DH, leading the team in homers and on pace to drive in more than 100 runs.

Defense and the need to improve the pitching staff were cited as the reason. Many feel Carlos Pena, who will replace Howard, can match him with the stick and certainly better him with the glove. But Howard should have netted more than McDonald, a swing-man who posted a 1.29 ERA out of the pen for Arizona this year. Arizona's Bronson Arroyo (4-7 despite a solid 3.87 ERA) would've been more help for a staff ranked 6th out of 8 in ERA in the Southern League at 4.71.

As for Arizona, they have underachieved this year, sitting 14 games out, and will slot Howard in at DH to boost what stands at the Southern League's #6 offense.

July Review (cont.)

Northern League Report

The New York Heroes haven't punched their postseason ticket yet, but barring catastrophe they will cruise. They would need to blow a 16-game lead with 58 remaining in order to miss their second consecutive division title and a presumed rematch with the West-leading Wichita Brigade.

New York leads the league in runs and ERA, among several other statistics. They regularly send out 8 batters hitting better than .290 - SS Ed McKean the only one below at .259. David Wright leads the Northern League in RBI with 78.

The Philadelphia Ringers played .600 ball in July and could pick up only two games on New York, closing the lead to 16 games but getting into second place. LF Charley Jones leads an otherwise anemic offense with 29 homers and 70 RBI. Satchel Paige (11-7, 2.80) deserves a much better record than what he has.

If New York's a near postseason surety, the Wichita Brigade are essentially already waiting. The Brigade lead the West by 20 games with two months still to play, and should better last year's 26-game margin by year's end. Al Orth's great 2009 season (16-5, 2.75) was lost in Rube Waddell's greatness. But this year, with Waddell struggling at times (8-10, 4.14), Orth has stepped forward as the ace (13-2, 2.98) and lead contender for the Outstanding Pitcher award.

All the Sacramento Stingers can do at this point is hope. For this season, that seems lost, but they are seeing promise in Cole Hamels, who has put up five straight quality starts and posted a 3.23 ERA in July. With a team ERA over 5 (5.18), the Stingers need all the pitching help they can get.

As for the Chicago Hitmen, their lack of pitching depth has ultimately derailed their hopes for more than improvement over last season's debacle. After an 11-17 month, Chicago's hope of a .500 season seems a longshot. One bright side for July? Johan Santana's 2.19 ERA for the month. The mashers' lineup has pounded 129 homers...26 more than the next best team in the North (Philadelphia, 103).

Southern League Report

It's an uphill climb, but the pennant race everyone hoped for last year between the New Orleans Knights and the Memphis Strummers could transpire this year if the Strummers have a surge in them.

Memphis gained four games on New Orleans last month, putting themselves as the only second-place team within 10 games of the leader in the PBL's four divisions. Now nine games out, Memphis sees New Orleans ahead and knows they have plenty of time if they can get their offense clicking.

Of course, that's a big if for a lineup that has been ineffective at the least this year, ranking fifth in the Southern League in runs and next-to-last in slugging. Cap Anson (.291-4-38) has gotten his average up but is not hitting for any power and Ryan Braun (.270-17-72) was disabled during the All-Star break with back spasms, taking a power bat out of the lineup and leaving Oscar Charleston (.403-22-82) with little protection. Charleston's chase for .400 is stirring, but for Memphis, it's the chase for the division that matters. On top of their other struggles, ace Jesse Tannehill (12-4, 4.23) has been disabled since the first week of July with shoulder tendinitis. He's expected to miss another three weeks, by which point Memphis' season will either be very interesting or very much over.

Giving them hope is a New Orleans team that is battered and bruised. 2B Ross Barnes (.289-6-34) dislocated his shoulder on July 5; SP Doc McJames (8-9, 3.93) is out with a bone spur but expected back shortly; 3B/2B Evan Longoria (.262-15-65) has been out three weeks with a fractured rib; and SP Rich Harden (7-3, 4.84) is likely done for the season with a ruptured finger tendon. Rookie first baseman Jack Fournier (.341-6-26) got his most playing time of the year, and hit .364 on the month.

The Knights are going with a four-man rotation at the moment, biding time until McJames returns. Meanwhile, Mark Prior (16-4, 2.49) continues his outstanding season and Dontrelle Willis (13-4, 3.28) has become increasingly consistent.

Meanwhile, San Antonio got bad news as Brandon Webb (8-7, 3.06) went down with a severe ankle sprain some say could end his season. Second baseman Jimmy Williams (.281-14-64) is also sidelined with a shoulder injury, a pair of losses that contributed to San Antonio's first losing month (13-15). Nonetheless, with a 13-game lead, it seems San Antonio should hold on, barring something catastrophic.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where Phil Rizzuto ends up. I only remember him as an announcer, but I felt like I spent a great part of my childhood listening to him.

Still no luck for the Hitmen, I guess it is time to start thinking about next year.

You may not have a pennant race, but it will be pretty cool to see if Oscar Charleston hits .400.

Yeah, the draft class is actually deeper than I thought. More hitters than pitchers, though Warren Spahn will be a fine catch for whoever drafts him. Rizzuto and Reese both at short. Las Vegas would be a good spot for either of them...they are currently starting Angel Berroa, who in an all-time setting like this just doesn't measure up.

Since I don't have a pennant race to follow for September, I may do a day by day over the last two weeks of the season following Charleston's chase. If a team gets within 5 games of a division, I'll cover that, too.

The Hitmen had an interesting month...I'll fill it in shortly when I post the NL Report.

Yeah, Angel Berroa just doesn't measure up! I'm looking forward to reading about their interesting month.

One question - is the draft rankings based on this years records, or last years? I guess either way Chicago should have a decent pick, but they really could use Spahn or Sain, in my opinion.

August Review (cont.)

Northern League Report

Tick...tick...tick. Time is running out on the PBL regular season, and playoff matchups seem essentially set.

The New York Heroes lost five games from their lead in August, but still hold a comfortable 11-game margin over the Louisville Racers, whose 22-7 month came after a pair of losing months that dropped them from contention. Dan Brouthers (.297-28-104) slammed 10 homers and drove in 31 runs on the month, while Billy Southworth his .369 to pace the Racers. Roy Oswalt (16-10, 3.45) went 5-1 on the month, while Shawn Chacon (8-3, 2.76) kept up his surprising season.

Still, the Heroes sit pretty, Irish Meusel's (.301-12-97) 27-RBI month surging him into the league leaders while 2B Martin DiHigo (.314-4-35) has hit .389 over the past two months. Their performances back up Roger Connor (.322-24-69) and David Wright (.268-17-89) and the Heroes brace for an NLCS rematch with the Wichita Brigade.

Key to that duel will be pitching, and the Heroes feel they can match Wichita this year. Ace Jim McCormick won his 20th game (20-9, 3.11), but his supporting acts - Bill Byrd (17-5, 3.13) and Harry Howell (17-11, 4.00) - give the Heroes reason to believe in a different outcome.

For Wichita, the question is if they'll have enough bodies to reach the postseason. In addition to July's loss of Jimmy Sheckard and Jonas Gaines, the Brigade in August lost ace Al Orth (15-5, 3.22) with elbow tendinitis, and Robinson Cano (.300-16-80) - who is out for the season with a partially torn labrum. Despite the injury occuring in Cano's non-throwing shoulder, it's been said the injury is too severe for him to return, even for the postseason.

For the Chicago Hitmen, we start with the good news: the Hitmen had the first winning month in franchise history, going 15-14 in August. And touted prospect Johan Santana (0-3, 5.06) has now posted a 2.30 ERA over his past two months, drawing calls to put him in the rotation for good. The bad news? Rookie sensation Babe Ruth (.280-25-87) is lost for the season with a torn hamstring, an injury that likely ends the Hitmen's hopes of reaching .500 this season.

It's based on this year's record. I do the draft after the season, so the November 2010 draft is based on the results of the 2009 season (which is why they had the top pick last year).

Southern League Report
Remember that talk about the Memphis Strummers chasing down the New Orleans Knights down the stretch? Forget it.

The Strummers went 10-19 in August, dropping them into third place, 15 games behind the Knights. And if that wasn't bad enough, August closed out with the league's top story, Oscar Charleston, tearing a ligament in his thumb.

Charleston's quest for .400 is now at an interesting place. The injury is expected to sideline Charleston until the last week of the season. He is currently sitting right at .400, and has enough plate appearances that he could miss the rest of the year and go in the books as having hit a legitimate .400.

Will Charleston take it with the season for the Strummers for all intents and purposed over? It remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the Knights maintain a 10-game lead over the Orlando Orcas, who have been unable to make up any ground since the stunning trade of Ryan Howard. SS Honus Wagner (.261-10-65), a disappointment since he was taken in the inaugural draft, hit .322 and drove in 26 runs in August. RF Sam Crawford (.327-17-72), 1B Buck Freeman (.317-19-61) and Outstanding Hitter candidate 3B Ezra Sutton (.318-19-102) remain hot, but the pitching staff - ranked 7th of 8 in the Southern League - won't let them mount a threat, it seems.

That leaves New Orleans essentially getting healthy and getting ready for the postseason. Doc McJames (12-11, 3.62) went 3-1 with a 2.65 ERA in August after returning from his bone spur-induced stint on the DL. Put him next to Mark Prior (21-5, 2.89) and Dontrelle Willis (16-6, 3.15) and the Knights look loaded for bear. Add to that the fact that four hitters could top 100 RBI, and New Orleans looms as a PBL Championship favorite.

RF Sam Thompson (.287-26-98), LF Topsy Hartsel (.285-19-92), DH Prince Fielder (.261-18-88) and CF Curtis Granderson (.284-14-84) all could go over the century mark by year's end.

Don't expect the San Antonio Sheriffs to roll over for New Orleans, though. Despite Noodles Hahn's disappointing year (11-13, 5.51), the Sheriffs still lead the Southern League in virtually every pitching category. Ted Trent (19-5, 2.78) has become the staff ace, Joe McGinnity (16-10, 3.68) and rookie Dick Rudolph (11-7, 2.95) back him nicely and Brandon Webb (8-7, 3.06) is expected off the disabled list in another two weeks.

It's easy to discount San Antonio's offense because it's last in the Southern League in home runs with 80. But runs, not home runs, are the name of the game, and in that department the Sheriffs rank third. A power bat would have helped, but ultimately in a playoff series, manufacturing runs will likely win. And the Sheriffs, second in the Southern League in OBP and first in steals by a wide margin, can play that game with anyone.
