Cy Young threw a complete-game 2-hit shutout and is now 1-2 in this last three starts despite a 1.03 ERA - the story of his season, as he's now 5-14 with a solid 3.49 ERA. Chicago got a sac fly from Albert Pujols and an RBI single from Eddie Waitkus in the first before Pujols homered in the third to conclude the scoring against Jim McCormick.

Rube Waddell was stellar for six innings. But he surrendered a homer to Tommy Leach in the 7th and homers to Joe Kelley and Hardy Richardson in the 8th to tie it. After Wichita scored a pair in the top of the 10th, it seemed they would survive the comback. But Dan Brouthers did what stars are supposed to do in pennant races, blasting a game-winning three-run shot to win it and open the lead over New York.

John Donaldson allowed 3 runs, two earned in a complete game victory coming in his first start since allowed 8 runs in 1 2/3 to the Philadelphia Ringers on August 6. Wichita's Johnny Schmitz held Louisville in check through eight, but Chad Cordero blew the save, allowing a Joe Kelley three-run homer to win it for Louisville.

Harry Howell wasn't good, but Elton Chamberlain was worse. New York made their 10 hits count, scoring 9 runs without a homer but getting RBI from seven different players as they knocked off Chicago is a poorly-played contest. Troy Tulowitzski had three hits and 2 RBI for Chicago in the loss.

Frank Chance drove in five runs for Wichita, including a three-run homer, as the Brigade took the series finale in Louisville. He wasn't particularly good today, but nevertheless Al Orth picked up his career-best 18th win. He's now 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA in September.

Matt Cain improved to 4-0 with a 1.72 ERA in September, seeming like he's completely recovered both from last year's elbow surgery and August's oblique strain. Roy Oswalt lost for the second straight start. Pete Alexander, Louisville's first round pick in 2009, picked up his first career save and has a 1.74 ERA out of the bullpen since coming up to the big club in August for Charlotte. And as a result, the division is once again tied!

Louisville's 5-9 hitters went 10-23 with 7 RBI as the Racers went back into first with after coming back from an 8-1 deficit. Joe Kelley and Lefty Marr each had three hits and Hideki Matsui drove in three for Louisville, which got three scoreless innings out of Jason Jennings to enable them to claw back against the Charlotte bullpen.

This game had everything. New York's Jim McCormick was simply off his game, allowing 5 runs over 3 1/3 innings. Victor Martinez hit a 2-run homer in the fourth, and McCormick followed this by drilling John Anderson in the back. Anderson proceeded to charge the mound and ignite a nasty brawl that cleared both benches. McCormick and Anderson were both ejected, and the incident seemed to spark New York, which followed with five runs to tie it in the bottom of the fourth, beginning the inning with six straight hits, including four for extra bases. Philadelphia would take a lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Pat Mullin hit an RBI single to tie it again. Philadelphia got a solo homer from Ned Williamson off Jonathan Papelbon in the top of the 10th, which would win it for Philadelphia. The loss, however, would prove the least of New York's problems...

Heroes' McCormick Suspended 10 Games

NEW YORK -- In what could be devastating blow to the New York Heroes' chase of the Louisville Racers for the Northern League East division crown, 19-game winner Jim McCormick has been suspended 10 games after hitting John Anderson of the Philadelphia Ringers following a homer by Victor Martinez to ignite a brawl.

"Absolutely F*&@ ridiculous," New York manager Pat Moran said of the news. "He came inside, and now they are going to decide a pennant race by taking away my ace! It's not right, dammit!"

While Frank Killen has won 21 games, McCormick (19-7, 3.75) is still considered the anchor of the Heroes' staff as the PBL's all-time wins leader with 58.

McCormick didn't speak to reporters.

The decision comes with the Heroes 1 1/2 games back, and with a four-game set at home against Louisville to wrap up the season. McCormick's suspension will conclude in time for him to start the final game of the season, which could be - obviously - tremendously important.

Swept into a race
New Orleans takes three from Orlando to tighten the East again

ORLANDO -- Four days ago, the Orlando Orcas led the New Orleans Knights by 8 1/2 games, seemingly having run away with the Southern League East division.

Today, Orlando's lead is 4 1/2 after the defending champion New Orleans Knights went into Orlando and swept a three-game set.

Mark Prior threw a complete game four-hit shutout in a 5-0 win in game one, a game in which the bottom four of Curtis Granderson, George Wright, Xavier Nady and Lave Cross went 9-for-16 while driving in all five runs. In game two, Orlando came back from a 5-1 deficit to tie it, only to see Prince Fielder hit an RBI single in the top of the 9th to win it. New Orleans then got 5 RBI from understudy Rob Hammock in a 10-3 romp in the finale.

Orlando has nine games remaining, New Orleans 10. They meet for a two-game set in New Orleans Sept. 28 and 29.

Louisville's Oswalt suspended 10 games after brawl

LOUISVILLE - As if the pennant race between Louisville and New York didn't have enough tension, Racers ace Roy Oswalt has now been suspended for 10 games, just as was handed down to the Heroes' Jim McCormick three days earlier. So with the tightest pennant race in PBL history down to its final week, the two men with the most wins in PBL history are on the sidelines.

On Sept. 21, McCormick allowed a home run to Victor Martinez before hitting John Anderson of Philadelphia, igniting a bench-clearing brawl.

Last night, Oswalt - also facing Philadelphia - allowed a 2-run homer to Dan McGann in the 7th inning. The next batter, Reed Johnson, took one in ribs. Johnson took to the mound, another brawl ensued.

"I had no choice," commissioner Matt Hendricks explained. "It was exactly the same situation as with McCormick. I couldn't make the penalty any different."

But it is different. Louisville ventures to New York for a four-game set to conclude the season in what looks to be a division-deciding matchup. McCormick loses a start leading up to that series, but his suspension expires on the last day of the season, meaning he could conceivably start the season finale. For Oswalt, his suspension carries through the end of the regular season.

Oswalt was livid, calling the suspensions - including McCormick's - "pure idiocy." But Oswalt couldn't help but wonder if the common denominator here has a part in the situation.

"Philadelphia's accomplished nothing, they're finished," Oswalt fumed. "Is it coincidence that in the final two weeks of the season, they start brawls with the two teams in the hunt?"

"Perhaps," Louisville skipper Ned Hanlon said when told of Oswalt's assertion. "All I know is this is a huge blow to us as a team, and to Roy personally. He's the ultimate competitor. At least McCormick might get a chance to have a say in this race. Roy's done."

In the other locker room, Philadelphia manager John Ward scoffed at Oswalt's conspiracy theory.

"My guys were thrown at twice, that's the story," Ward barked. "That those two put their teams' playoff chances in this position is a reflection of them, not my guys."

"Bull****," New York manager Pat Moran answered when the happenings in Louisville were relayed to him, as well as Oswalt's assertion regarding Philadelphia. "They're second class, and this is a reflection of that."

The Oswalt loss is an extra blow to Louisville. Not only will Oswalt not be able to pitch again this season, but the loss comes on top of news that back spasms have sidelined slugger Dan Brouthers. Now, the Racers must fight to the finish without their ace and their only true slugger.

Hanlon bristled when a reporter asked if this means Louisville will find out what it's made of.

"I know what we're made of," he said glaringly. "You take a well-made house and strip the support beams from it, it's damn hard to stay upright. That doesn't mean the house isn't made right."

He bowed his head for a moment before looking up.

"But we're gonna win this damn thing anyway."

Volquez hit Dan McGann in the fourth, drawing a glare but nothing else. McGann hit the homer that preceded the brawl that sparked Oswalt's suspension yesterday.

New Orleans comes in really needing to sweep both games at home against Orlando to have a shot. It doesn't happen, Al Javery is solid for Orlando, while Doc McJames is picked apart to a slow death, Sam Crawford's fifth inning 2-run bomb notwithstanding.
