May Review (cont.)
Leaders as of June 1, 2012

The New York Heroes have lost Bill Drake (4-4, 3.36) for the season with an elbow injury, a tough end to a great 19-8 month that has seen the Heroes open up an 8 1/2 game lead over the Charlotte Cougars. Roger Connor (.279-13-53) is on pace for a great RBI year, while Irish Meusel leads the league in batting at .363. Jack Taylor, who has been both a starter and reliever during his three years with the Heroes will be inserted as the 5th starter in a rotation that leads the Northern League with a 3.67 ERA. Billy Byrd, Harry Howell and Frank Killen are a combined 21-7.

In addition to losing Andy Sonnanstine and Cliff Lee in April, the Charlotte Cougars are now without Matt Holliday (.350-3-22), who was off to a great start. Holliday has a bulging disc in his back and is out until the All-Star break. The time is nearing when the Pedro Feliz (.176-1-14) experiment at first base needs to be tabled. The high hopes for Matt Cain (3-6, 6.45), coming back successfully from shoulder surgery last year, have faded in the early going this season.

Other than leading baseball in homers, little went right in May for the Philadelphia Ringers. Charley Jones and John O'Rourke remain among the league leaders in homers, and rookie Jason Thompson hit .354 on the month. But John Anderson (.282-6-30) is the only starter hitting over .260 for the season, and pitching continues to struggle with a 4.50 ERA.

The Louisville Racers see Roy Oswalt (7-5, 4.30) and Dan Brouthers (.318-10-38) in their familiar leading roles, but struggles elsewhere. Hardy Richardson (.176-5-22) has given way to rookie Lou Whitaker at second base, at least part time. Lefty Marr hit .290 last year, is hitting .263 this year with no homers (after 18 last year).

The Indianapolis Engines may well be for real. Three starters hitting .330: Jake Beckley (.358), Elmer Flick (.335) and Wally Pipp (.335); the league's best bullpen (2.97, collectively); a dynamite closer in Joakim Soria (12 saves, 0.92 ERA); and a pitcher on pace for a 20-win season (Charley Radbourn, 8-2).

They lead the Wichita Brigade by only two games, after Wichita went 20-9 in May to burst from the cellar. The annual surprise star for Wichita this season seems to be Jim Whitney (7-1, 3.08). But it's Rube Waddell (8-2, 3.59) who's turning heads, having struck out a league-leading 112 batters in 95.1 innings and in his last start becoming the first PBL pitcher to top 1,000 strikeouts.

Pink Hawley has made six starts for the Chicago Hitmen. He's taken six losses. Four of those came during a May that saw the Hitmen go 12-16, and suffer the loss of rookie Len Barker (3-1, 3.63) to a shoulder strain. He should be back, and Hawley really didn't pitch that badly, posting a 4.08 ERA on the month. Babe Ruth (.311-4-22) also went down, with a back strain, but is expected back in about a week. Keep an eye on rookie Garry Templeton, who has 10 hits in his first 21 at bats and could push the struggling Troy Tulowitzski (.186) to the bench.

As for the Sacramento Stingers, they hope the imminent return of rookie Paul Molitor and Sam Bankhead (.295) to try and jumpstart and offense whose lone bright spot has been Brian McCann (.299-7-25). As for pitching...it's the league's worst. We'll leave it at that.

The New Orleans Knights are on top in the East again, carried by one usual suspect and two surprises. Sam Thompson (.268-12-42) has been good but not great, yet solid enough to lead the way in homers and RBI. But the offensive star has been Fred Carroll who, after hitting .237 last season, has exploded to bat .363 in the early going this season. On the hill, while Mark Prior (6-5, 3.30) has been good, the staff leader so far is Josh Towers (5-2, 2.38). Opponents finally got rookie closer Bruce Sutter, as Arizona got four in the ninth off him May 31st for the first runs allowed by Sutter this season.

CC Sabathia's entry into the Alabama Airmen rotation has been spotty. He was great against Louisville, hurling a complete game four-hitter. He was solid against Memphis, allowing three earned runs in another complete game. But he's gotten shelled three times, making him 2-2 with a 5.02 ERA since joining the rotation. Expect him to get every chance at consistency, though, as the Airmen are playing well, going 15-12 in May. Jimmy Rollins continues to excel, batting .344.

It's too early to talk about a chase again, but Oscar Charleston is leading the Memphis Strummers yet again with a brilliant performance, and a pursuit of .400. Batting .405 with 10 homers and 44 RBI, Charleston is further cementing his status as the game's best player, while Memphis creeps toward .500 in hopes of a pennant race. Look for Kevin Youkilis to get more playing time, as he's batting .354-.439-.604 in a part-time role.

The defending champion Orlando Orcas sit in the east cellar, and it didn't get any better with the news that ace Bill Hoffer - who had won the April Pitcher of the Month Award - is likely out for the season with a torn rotator cuff. Red Faber, who was drafted in the third round of the 2009 draft, will get the first shot at replacing Hoffer in the rotation. One bright spot is Honus Wagner, batting .297 and perhaps finally finding the elusive consistency expected since he was taken in the inaugural draft.

Don't tell John Clarkson (7-4, 2.45) the West-leading Los Angeles Idols can't pitch. He and Larry Corcoran (4-1, 3.52) are doing their part to keep the Idols from being one dimensional, as their offense continues to pace baseball with an average of more than 6 runs a game. Fred Tenney, Cal McVey and Mike Donlin are each above .320, while Justin Morneau leads the bats with 10 homers and 45 RBI.

The Arizona Sandmen's pitching staff took a blow when starter Larry Cheney, who's gone 28-14 over the past two seasons, was diagnosed with a torn labrum that will shelve him for the year. Rookie Britt Burns has replaced him, going 1-1 with a 3.16 ERA, but the staff will certainly miss Cheney. What the Sandmen really miss, though, is some offense, despite the great and mind-boggling start of Cory Sullivan, who is hitting .371. But they are improving, and their 18-10 May has them just a couple of games out.

The Las Vegas Bosses continue to struggle, and injuries aren't helping. Alejandro Oms, who hit .323 last season, remains out with a ruptured tendon in his finger. Harry Davis, whose 11 homers are second on the team despite his horrendous .197 average, is out with a sore wrist and is day-to-day. After playing .500 ball in April, the Bosses went 8-20 in May, without much help in sight.

Enough was enough for the San Antonio Sheriffs brass, which canned manager Bobby Cox after the Sheriffs - who just two years ago won 101 games - began the year 18-36. The team is batting .236, and their pitching staff - hurt by injuries to closer Hideki Okajima and two-time Outstanding Pitcher winner Ted Trent - ranks next to last in the league. Still, Cox reportedly had lost his team, which has yet to name a replacement. Bench coach Edgar Maes is running things currently.

Considering they've lost a pitcher with a 3.61 ERA last year (Young), a pitcher with a 2.97 ERA last year (Bush), and the powerful duo of Dunn and Ruth, the Hitmen have done well to hang in. They need to get healthy though and make a push, or for someone to go on a tear. Lots of season left, of course, but they can absolutely be in the hunt if they weather in the injuries. Still have Young and Bush out til mid-August, though.

June Review (cont.)

Trade-season Starts Early
Big names move during June
There was no waiting for the July 31 trade deadline rush this year. With all four divisions within six games, lots of people feel they are in the race. And, as such, it's time to tweak the roster and try and make that surge. We'll look at the deals that went down this month:

The Sacramento Stingers trade OF George Hall (.276-11-37) to the Los Angeles Idols for 1B Justin Morneau (.265-12-52). Morneau will walk into the first base job with Sacramento, which tired of waiting for Travis Hafner to develop. Hall, meanwhile, seems to be set to platoon at DH with rookie Eddie Murray, who has been called up to the big club.

Sacramento also trades 1B Adam Laroche (.270-6-27) to the Charlotte Cougars for P Mark Mulder (2-0, 4.05).

The New Orleans Knights trade C Jack Rowe (.305-1-25) to the Philadelphia Ringers for CF John O'Rourke (.265-20-55). The deal sends shockwaves through Philadelphia, which can't believe the team dealt the Northern League's #2 homerun bat for a powerless catcher whose defense is suspect. Rowe hits for a good average, but one must think they could have gotten more for O'Rourke, who is 4th on the PBL's Alltime home run list.

The San Antonio Sheriffs trade P Brandon Webb (3-8, 5.68) to the Indianapolis Engines for OF Gabe Gross (.260-2-9). If San Antonio can think of a benefit here, I hope they let us know. Sure, Webb's struggled this year and been a bit injury prone, but he's also posted a sub-4.00 ERA in each of his three years. Gabe Gross is not an impact player.

The Orlando Orcas traded 3B Claude Ritchey (.215-1-20) to the Alabama Airmen for P Barry Zito (8-3, 4.35).

Also of note is San Antonio's hiring of Charlie Manuel to replace the fired Bobby Cox.

June Review (cont.)
Leaders as of July 1, 2012

It's still the New York Heroes in front in the East, hoping for their fourth straight division title. But a losing month for the Heroes (12-14) is keeping things a bit close, though their division lead of 5 1/2 games is tied for the PBL's best. Irish Meusel leads the league in hitting at .350, Roger Connor (.289-14-71) is his rock-steady self and it appears David Wright (.300-12-60) is evolving into the performer the Heroes anticipated when they took him in the inaugural draft. Pitching was the June struggle, though, as Jim McCormick, Harry Howell and Jack Taylor went a combined 3-8 with an ERA of 6.00.

That worked to the advantage of the Charlotte Cougars, who went 15-12 on the month. Jake Peavy (8-4, 2.71) continues to lead the rotation, but is getting support from Ben Sheets (6-8, 3.58) and Ralph Branca (8-4, 3.76). Rookie Billy Sample has filled in nicely for the injured Matt Holliday, hitting .301. Holliday (.350-3-22) is due back this week. New acquisition Adam LaRoche hit .351 with 2 homers and 7 RBI in 11 games, finalizing the move of Pedro Feliz (.204-1-17) to the bench.

Nobody's quite clear on what prompted the Philadelphia Ringers to deal John O'Rourke and his 20 homers to New Orleans for catcher Jack Rowe a few days ago, particularly near the end of a month that saw the Ringers go 16-11 and in which O'Rourke hit .333 with 5 homers and 20 RBI. His numbers aren't great, but the Ringers seem to think rookie Andre Dawson (.244-4-21) is the centerfielder of the future. Which is fine, but he's not there yet. Rookie Jason Thompson (.346-7-26) has taken the first base job by force. Satchel Paige posted a 2.68 ERA on the month.

A 14-12 month helped the Louisville Racers, but they'll need more to get back in the heat of things here, though there's plenty of time left, of course. After an abyssmal start to the year, Hardy Richardson (.247-10-45) hit .416 in June. Roy Oswalt (9-6, 3.91) continues to lead the way for the pitching staff.

Out west, the Indianapolis Racers have seen their hold slip to a single percentage point over the Wichita Brigade. The Racers continue to lead the league in scoring despite a sophomore slump of sorts from Stan Musial (.268-3-25) that has seen him reduced to part-time status for now. The emergence of Wally Pipp (.318-16-73) has put Jake Beckley (.346-6-44) in the DH slot. And as long as Billy Hamilton (.272-4-27), Elmer Flick (.311-11-45) and Fred Clarke (.365-1-17) are hitting, Musial - who hit .172 in June - will be getting a bit more of a breather. "He'll be a fixture here for a long time," manager Frank Selee said of Musial. "But right now, he's scuffling and we're winning. I'm not going to change that. And he gets it."

Despite a pitching staff with the next-to-most runs allowed (421) in the Northern League - and three pitchers done for the season - the Wichita Brigade are looking for their own fourth straight division crown. There's some concern over Rube Waddell's backslide this month, though he still has 12 wins and went 4-1 despite an ERA over 5. But there's more worry about Jonas Gaines, who went 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA. Rube Foster, acquired from Chicago before the season, has put up a 1.32 ERA out of the bullpen. Don't be shocked if he takes Gaines' spot if he falters in his next start.

Speaking of Chicago, the Hitmen remain in the hunt despite their own batch of injury woes. They've gone 24-31 since a 15-10 start, but still find themselves only five games out despite slipping below .500. Traditionally a good offense, bad pitching team, the Hitmen have weathered injuries to their preseason top two starters - Cy Young and Joe Bush - to post the Northern League's top ERA (3.66). The offense, however, ranks sixth, as injuries to Adam Dunn have crippled his production (.184, 5 homers), and injuries have also limited Babe Ruth's (.308-5-28) time. Saving graces have been pitchers Howie Pollet (12-2, 2.04), Amos Rusie (7-4, 3.44) and closer Bobby Jenks (13 saves, 1.31 ERA).

The Sacramento Stingers shocked the baseball world when they dealt George Hall - a one-time 50-homer man and the face of the franchise - to Los Angeles for Justin Morneau. But Morneau is five years younger and at this point may well be a better hitter, and hit .364-4-14 in his first 15 games with the Stingers. The move, combined with the trade of Adam LaRoche, puts Morneau as the every day first baseman and means the Stingers will need to find a regular DH. Expect Hank Sauer to get a turn there.

June Review (cont.)
Leaders as of July 1, 2012

The New Orleans Knights went 16-10 in June, keeping their hold on the Southern League's East division in a month in which four starters posted sub-4 ERAs to offset five starters hitting below .250. Sam Thompson (.314-6-19 for the month) and Ross Barnes (.316 on the month) got help from rookie Bob Horner (.333, 3 homers) on an otherwise anemic offense that led to Rich Harden posting a 1.96 ERA but going 2-3 on the month. Doc McJames and Dontrelle Willis, however, went a combined 7-0.>>
>>
Trailing are the Memphis Strummers, who went 14-12 on the month and have shuffled things around greatly. Closer Jesse Tannehill has 17 saves, but has been placed in the rotation, as skipper Harry Wright has swapped him and rookie Steve Comer (3-3, 3.77). Rookies Ron Oester (.309-1-10) and Alan Trammell (.284-0-8) have taken over the middle infield after injuries to Cupid Childs and Otto Krueger. But the best month was had by Ty Wigginton, who after struggling the first two months of the season, hit .306 with 5 homers and 29 RBI in May.>>
>>
The defending champion Orlando Orcas continue to hover around .500, led by Aaron Harang (9-4, 2.77) on the hill and Sam Crawford (.323-16-62) at the plate. Honus Wagner (.302-5-29) continues to hit well, which will be huge as the Orcas attempt to charge in the second half.>>
>>
It was a tough month for the Alabama Airmen, as they strive to reach .500 for the first time. They dealt top winner Barry Zito to Orlando for Claude Ritchey at the end of the month, and have seen George Van Haltren surge into the batting race with a .334 mark on the strength of a .387 mark since May 1. But the 11-15 month ended their short-lived run above .500 and left them in the all-too familiar division cellar. >>
> >
Newcomer George Hall posted an 1.129 OPS in his first 14 games with the Los Angeles Idols, who continue to hold first place in the Southern League West division. Rookie Eddie Murray hit .320 in part-time action after being called up once Justin Morneau was traded, and figures to continue to at least get part-time at bats the rest of the way. The Idols are currently sending out five hitters above .310, and Vern Stephens is batting .298 for baseball’s best offense. Pitching is another story, as starters Billy Rhines, Brian Lawrence and Rodrigo Lopez all have ERA’s above 5.20.>>
> >
Chasing Los Angeles is the inverse, as the Arizona Sandmen boast the Southern League’s top pitching staff but rank 7th of 8 teams in runs scored. There’s hope, though, as Willie Wells returned from the DL to hit .287 with 4 homers on the month, rejoining Jose Reyes (.305) atop the order. Adrian Gonzalez has 11 homers and remains the only true power threat. Look for Arizona to deal for a power bat as July proceeds. Three months into the season, the Sandmen bullpen has a sparkling cumulative ERA of 1.81.>>
> >
In Las Vegas, the Bosses starters have a cumulative WHIP over 1.50. That’s how you go 33-47. Lip Pike (.290-20-49) carries the load. There’s offensive hope on the horizon, not necessarily for this year but the future. Lonnie Smith (.324), Tommy Holmes (.313) and Terry Puhl (.336) are laying groundwork to be a productive, if not powerful, outfield going forward. The pitching, however, must improve.>>
> >
There is no larger shock than what’s happened to the San Antonio Sheriffs, who two years ago won 101 games and now sit 27-55, 20 ½ games out of first place before the All-Star break. Jimmy Williams and Hugh Duffy lead the team in homers and RBIs with 9-36 and 7-32, respectively. Both are hurt. Ted Trent is done for the year, as is closer Hideki Okajima. That’s a lot to take, but even so, the record was hard enough to swallow that Bobby Cox lost his job.>>

PBL Announces Four New Franchises
MEMPHIS -- The Pastime Baseball League formally announced before last night's All-Star game the four cities that will receive new franchises in the league's first expansion.

The Northern League East will add a franchise in Boston, while the Northern League West will add a franchise in Milwaukee.

Meanwhile, the Southern League will add franchises in St. Louis and Oklahoma City.

Nicknames and management haven't yet been released, but the teams will begin play in the 2013 season and will have the first four picks in the November amateur draft.

Memphis Deals Anson in Stunner

MEMPHIS - A week ago, Cap Anson (.309-13-40)was an All-Star in front of his hometown fans in Memphis. Today, he is a member of the Orlando Orcas, sitting in the visitors dugout at Hard Rock Stadium after the biggest trade of the July deadline, dealt for starter Tim Keefe (8-8, 3.93).

"I'm stunned," Anson said of the deal. "I wanted to bring a championship to Memphis. But now I get to try and hope Orlando repeat."

That will be a tall order, as the Orcas trail by 8 games.

Anson received a standing ovation from the Memphis crowd before the finale of the series between the teams. He would go on to homer in his second at-bat, a three-run shot off Tim Lincecum.

The deal itself makes sense for Memphis, which has seen Kevin Youkilis develop and a week ago acquired Nick Johnson from Indianapolis. The chance to raise their pitching was too much to pass up.

As for Orlando, the deal makes less sense for them, unless they feel Buck Freeman's struggles (.222-5-41) are going to last. Particularly with ace Bill Hoffer on the shelf, likely for the rest of the season. Dealing a strong starter doesn't seem to make sense, as the offense has been doing its part.

"We're middle of pack in each (4th in offense, 3rd in pitching)," Orcas GM Paul Johnson said. "We felt there were better opportunities to build the offense than the pitching, so that's where we went."

Time will tell if it works out.

Ha, Papelbon pitched the 3rd inning in the All-Star game?

Hitmen still in it. Looks like being a season-long race.

LOL! I just wonder how Chad Cordero got his 6.44 ERA into the game!

July Review (cont.)

Trade deadline recap

We already covered the big one that saw Cap Anson go to Orlando for Tim Keefe. Here are the other July trades:

The New Orleans Knights traded 27-year-old SS/2B George Wright (.212-0-3) to the Memphis Strummers, getting 28-year-old starting pitcher Erik Bedard (13-5, 3.03) in return: A complete head-scratcher, as Memphis deals the guy who was second on the team in ERA for a middle infielder two-years removed from a good season. The Strummers have prospect Alan Trammell to back up Otto Krueger at short, and rookie Ron Oester has filled in brilliantly for the injured Cupid Childs, winning Rookie of the Month for June. A puzzler.

The Indianapolis Engines traded 26-year-old first baseman Nick Johnson (.324-6-24) and $1,453,100 in cash to the Memphis Strummers, getting 29-year-old starting pitcher Lady Baldwin (9-12, 5.23) in return. The deal that laid the groundwork for trading Anson. Is Memphis better with Johnson/Keefe than with Anson/Baldwin?

The Sacramento Stingers traded 29-year-old first baseman Travis Hafner (.233-0-5) and $639,800 in cash to the Wichita Brigade, getting 27-year-old shortstop Julio Lugo (.222-1-12) in return. Two guys who haven't panned out. You get the feeling, given how these franchises have gone, this will work out for Wichita.

The Alabama Airmen traded 26-year-old second baseman Bobby Lowe (.281-1-13) to the Los Angeles Idols, getting 29-year-old starting pitcher Rodrigo Lopez (9-8, 5.68) in return. Lowe can play OF as well, so he adds versatility to Los Angeles for a pitcher who hasn't gotten it done, despite the winning record.

The San Antonio Sheriffs traded 28-year-old right fielder Oyster Burns (.319-2-13) to the Charlotte Cougars, getting 27-year-old pitcher Pete Alexander (0-1, 2.25) in return. With this season done in San Antonio, the Sheriffs try to regroup with pitching, going for Alexander who at 27 has still not gotten a real chance to show his stuff. This could be a steal down the line.

The New York Heroes have opened up their East division lead to 8 games over Charlotte and 8 1/2 over Louisville, going 16-10 in July. Rookie catcher Terry Kennedy (.368-4-22) has been on fire, platooning with perennial All-Star Dick Higham (.349-2-24) for an unbeatable tandem. Offense struggled in July other than those two and Irish Meusel, the league's leading hitter who hit .343 on the month. Pitchers Frank Killen, Jim McCormick and Harry Howell went 10-1 with a 2.88 ERA on the month.

John Beckwith (.302-24-89) is driving the Charlotte Cougars as far as he can, banging out 20 extra-base hits and driving in 23 runs in July as the Cougars hope for a late season surge against the Heroes. He's joined by Paul Hines (.302-18-71), who hit 8 homers on the month. The rest of the offense needs to keep up, though, because the league's top pitching staff isn't enough.

The Louisville Racers went 17-9 in July, getting strong work from C Heinie Peitz (.287-6-23 in July), Joe Kelley (.309) and Billy Southworth (.296). But it was the bullpen, which went 4-0 with 9 saves and a sparkling 1.17 ERA on the month that lifted the Racers back into at least an outside shot at the division.

The Philadelphia Ringers' leading batter is Peanuts Lowrey, at .266. That just won't get it done, particularly when the pitching staff is spotty. One bright spot was lefty Jeff Francis, who posted a 2.11 ERA on the month, going 4-2.

It's a three-horse race out west, but the Indianapolis Engines are holding on to a slim 1-game advantage over Wichita and are up 2 1/2 games on Chicago. The sub status of Stan Musial is shocking many, though Musial hasn't said a word about it. Lady Baldwin went 2-2 with a 4.13 ERA since being picked up from Memphis, and the pitching is really what the Engines need. Jack Taylor went 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in July, but Charley Radbourn and Hank Wyse posted ERAs of around 6. A dangerous way to hold a division lead.

The Engines went 13-14, which could have been disasterous had the Wichita Brigade not gone 12-15. Jim Whitney, who had stepped up in the absence of starters Al Orth and Jake Westbrook, tore his meniscus and is out until mid-September. Of great concern is that Rube Waddell (14-7, 4.47) has gotten progressively worse. His monthly ERAs: 2.98, 4.30, 5.32, 5.63. Of equal concern, perhaps, is Jay Gibbons: in April - .336-11-30. Since: .251-11-59.

Those struggles mean the Chicago Hitmen, despite their rash of injuries, have held close, and a 15-11 July puts them in the thick of things. Their top four starters have ERAs below 3.90, including Amos Rusie, who went 4-0 with a 2.01 ERA in July. Rusie has had ups and downs since being taken in the inaugural draft, but he was only 18 then. He seems to be getting it together and, at 21, could be key to Chicago's future. Albert Pujols drove in 20 runs on the month, and Josh Hamilton posted an absurd 1.052 OPS, drawing 24 walks on the month. In the next two weeks, Joe Bush and Cy Young should be off the DL, a potentially race-changing development.

The Sacramento Stingers suffered through a 7-19 month in which leading hitter Harry Davis (.346), suffered a severe ankle sprain and went on the shelf. Some may say it's a merciful end.
