Pastime Baseball League Monthly![]() Vol. 1, Monday, August 1, 2009 (cont.) Stars Shine in First PBL All-Star Game Northern League wins inaugural contest 5-3 The Pastime Baseball League's first-ever All-Star game was everything those honored - and honored to attend - could possibly have wanted. But in the end, one big blow from Charlotte Cougars third baseman John McGraw would hold up, as the Northern League would hold off the supposedly stronger Southern League 5-3. Wichita's Rube Waddell (15-3, 2.54) got the starting nod for the Northern League, and showed the form he's shown for two months now, striking out three while allowing one hit over two innings. He was countered by New Orleans' Doc McJames (12-3, 1.92) - who had lost his prior start, his first loss in 2 1/2 months. The North struck quickly, though, as Indianapolis right fielder Elmer Flick led off with a single, stole second and was driven home on an RBI single from New York catcher Dick Higham. McJames would retire the final six batters he would face before turning it over to Memphis closer George Sherrill, who would be glad this game didn't count. Sherrill walked Flick, gave up a single to Higham and then walked Sacramento centerfielder George Hall in a pick-your-poison spot, bringing up Louisville first baseman Dan Brouthers. Despite a rough six weeks for Brouthers, this wasn't a matchup Sherill wanted. But he'd hang tough and strike out Brouthers looking. "I thought I'd be fine then," Sherill said after the game. As inferred by his quote, he thought wrong. Indianapolis leftfielder Abner Dalrymple lined a 1-0 fastball through the hole between short and third for an RBI single, giving the North a 2-0 lead. Sherrill struck out Lousiville shortstop Herman Long, bringing him to the precipice of escape. But McGraw had other ideas, lining a 1-2 slider into the gap for a bases-clearing double and giving the North a 5-0 lead. The South would mount a comeback, starting with Alabama rightfielder Mike Tiernan's solo homer off of New York closer Jonathan Papelbon in the fifth. The South would then bring home a pair off of Philadelphia starter Charley "Old Hoss" Radbourn in the sixth, when a Tiernan triple would bring home Arizona second baseman Nap Lajoie and Orlando catcher Jim O'Rourke. But that would be it for the South, as Jim Devlin (Sacramento), Danys Baez (Louisville) and Brad Lidge (Sacramento) would close it out for the North and hand them the PBL's first All-Star title. Thanks! As for your question, Chase Utley was taken in the 12th round of the inaugural draft by the Orlando Orcas. He was on the reserve squad for most of the year, with Claude Ritchey earning the starting nod at 2B. But Ritchey got hurt at the end of July and Utley played for most of August. He's hit .244 with 2 homers and 11 RBI in 82 ABs. Not great numbers, but good enough to earn him platoon status with Ritchey the rest of the way. He may very well earn the starting nod next season.

I'm shocked by that. Even with importing from the first season of rookie qualifications, it's still odd that all these guys have underperformed. If there's a team that should be most improved next year, I'd look at Chicago. They should have the first pick in a draft class that includes Babe Ruth and Pete Alexander. Ruth will import as a hitter, based on 1918. Of course, anything can happen with the draft, particularly with guys who had great first years (see Noodles Hahn being drafted #1 in the inaugural draft). But I would suspect Ruth goes #1, and him, Pujols, Dunn, Hamilton and Teixiera in the same lineup should be incredibly potent pretty quickly. Rusie, Young and Santana should evolve into one of the top staffs in the league. If they don't rebound significantly I'll be stunned.
