The Pastime Baseball League
Setup is near complete for the Pastime Baseball League.
The league features 16 teams who will stage an inaugural draft of 533 players comprised of the best players to debut a) before 1900 b) since and including 2000 c) 34 Negro League stars Each year, players who debuted in a given 5-year segment from the 1900s will make up the 5-round amateur draft pool. Rosters are 24 active players, with an 8-man reserve squad. Players are imported based on their first season of at least semi-regular playing time. As such, some players haven't hit their peaks yet. I wanted the chance for player development to occur, rather than everyone at their peak year. Ratings are based on normalized stats, to even the cross-era playing field. This is done using Davenport Translations per Baseball Prospectus. League totals are designed to be mid 80s totals, so home run leaders should be high 30s, low 40s. Team ERAs should be low 4s. Up next, a quick glimpse at some players in the inaugural draft pool.

I forgot one good one...Russell Martin. But yeah, the current catcher crop is pretty weak other than an excellent top two.

Thanks, Jeff. Can't wait to get the season going, but forcing myself to be patient and set it up right Defensive imports were a bit haywire, so needed to adjust the defensive ratings appropriately. CF and RF are all that's left.

Pastime Baseball League - And So It Begins
The Pastime Baseball League's inaugual draft was held yesterday, with the first selection going to the San Antonio Sheriffs. Led by the belief that pitching wins championships, the Sheriffs elected not only to take a strong pitcher, but one who - at only 19 years old - could top their staff for many years to come. Noodles Hahn became the first player chosen in PBL history. Small in stature at 5'8" and 160 pounds, the young southpaw was a surprise to some as the first pick in the draft, though most agree his talent is extraordinary. With the second pick, the Memphis Strummers went for arguably to most complete player in the draft, snagging centerfielder Oscar Charleston. A legitimate five-tool player, Charleston himself in only 21 years old, yet is seen as potentially be ready be a dominant force in the PBL already. A surprise at number three saw leftfielder George Hall snatched up by the Sacramento Stingers. Hall's power potential is highly regarded, but many other players are seen as having a more complete package than what Hall offers. At #4, the Wichita Brigade chose Rube Waddell, a choice nobody questioned. The fireballing Waddell is a certain staff anchor right off the bat. #5 is a pick that shocked virtually everyone, as Joe Corbett was chosen by the Alabama Airmen. Corbett certainly has talent, but the pitching depth in this draft was very strong, and it's much in question if Corbett will keep pace with the studs around him. Rounding out the first round: Louisville Racers - 1B Dan Brouthers Las Vegas Bosses - P Tommy Bond Orlando Orcas - P Francisco Liriano Los Angeles Idols - CF Mike Donlin New Orleans Knights - 2B Ross Barnes Philadelphia Ringers - CF John O'Rourke Indianapolis Engines - CF Billy Hamilton Chicago Hitmen - RF King Kelly New York Heroes - P Harry Howell Charlotte Cougars - P Kid Nichols Arizona Sandmen - P Ben Sanders |

Prospects
Pastime Baseball League - Top 10 Prospects
Dynamic scouting is on, so this will certainly change as the year progresses. However, after the inaugural draft, the Baseball America Top 10 prospects are as follows: 1. Jonas Gaines - Wichita Brigade Gaines is presently set to start the year in Wichita's bullpen. At 19, the feeling is that he has some development to do before becoming a big pitcher. But Brigade manager Whitey Herzog doesn't rule out Gaines cracking the rotation if he has a dynamic spring. 2. Johan Santana - Chicago Hitmen like Gaines, the lefty Santana is seen as a top-of-the-rotation starter in short order. But for now, he'll begin in the bullpen as well. 3. Amos Rusie - Chicago Hitmen Consider that Cy Young is already in this rotation and the prospect of both Santana and Rusie joining him when they mature a bit must have manager Joe McCarthy salivating. Rusie is, remarkably, only 17. 4. Oscar Charleston - Memphis Strummers The PBL's top rated position prospect, Charleston is a legitimate Triple Crown threat. Expected to hit third behind Ichiro Suzuki, Charleston should have plenty of RBI opportunities and could be poised for a huge first season. 5. Noodles Hahn - San Antonio Sheriffs The first pick of the PBL inaugural draft, the 19-year-old lefty will have all eyes on him as the PBL's first campaign opens up. 6. Ed Delahanty - Alabama Airmen A fast, pure hitter, Delahanty is seen as a batting title contender who has the potential to develop consierable power down the line. 7. Mike Donlin - Los Angeles Idols Donlin's weakness is his defense, but he is seen as a legit offensive force, getting on base extensively and likely contributing good, if not great, power numbers. 8. John McGraw - Charlotte Cougars McGraw is reputed to have a great baseball mind, but most importantly to the Cougars at present is a strong glove and batting average potential. He has more gap power than true home run power, but can still be a strong offensive presence in the right lineup. 9. Albert Pujols - Chicago Hitmen Chicago's third entry in the top 10 prospects, Pujols is an offensive beast. Average, power, run production, and a better than average glove to boot, he's the total package and could easily be higher on this list. 10. Ted Trent - San Antonio Sheriffs Another strong young pitcher who will likely earn his stripes in the bullpen before being thrust into a set rotation spot. Perhaps a bit overrated here, but should be solid. |
