Saturday, June 11, 1977 Bert Blyleven proves once again why the Texas pitching staff is a force to be reckoned with as he holds a powerful Boston Red Sox ballclub to just a solitary Carlton Fisk (.228) single while throwing his third shutout of the season and 33rd of his career."He was unhittable tonight." Red Sox manager Don Zimmer said. "Believe me, we tried." Red Sox starter Mike Paxton had an almost equally outstanding performance, allowing just five hits in the game and two going into the eighth inning. But it is that eighth inning that proves Paxton's undoing as he gives up a one-out single to Bump Wills (.289) which is followed five pitches later by a Ken Henderson (.230, 3 HR, 15 RBI) blast that just managed to clear the wall down the right field line for a two-run home run - the only runs in the game. "Pax pitched his heart out tonight." Boston first baseman George Scott said afterward. "We just did not deliver on the offensive end. We let him down." Together with Gaylord Perry (9-3, 1.95 ERA) and Doyle Alexander (6-4, 3.61 ERA) in the front end of the rotation, Blyleven and the Rangers lead the majors in earned run average (2.79) as well as opponents batting average (.233) and in the top three in virtually every major pitching statistic. Jose Morales (.136) also has two hits for Texas. American League News Kansas City Royals at Milwaukee Brewers Jim Gantner (.287) goes 3-for-3 while Robin Yount (.228, 22 RBI) and Cecil Cooper (.270, 25 RBI, 7 SB) hit a pair of two-run doubles to give Milwaukee the 4-0 win in another pitching duel. Moose Haas (3-8, 3.46 ERA) keeps the Royals off of the basepaths, allowing just two hits and facing only 29 batters. Jim Colborn (6-4, 3.33 ERA) goes the distance in the loss while John Mayberry is 1-25 (.040) in his last eight games for the Royals. Cleveland Indians at California Angels An error by Bill Melton (his sixth) in the first leads to five unearned runs, but Paul Hartzell (7-4, 2.91 ERA) makes the point moot as he blanks the Tribe 6-0 on seven hits. Tony Solaita (.292, 29 RBI) drives in a run on two hits for California while Johnny Grubb (.323) has three hits and Jim Norris (.276) extends his hitting streak to 14 games in the loss. Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees Minnesota's Rod Carew (.291, 22 RBI, 20 SB) has four hits including two doubles while Dan Ford (.324, 24 RBI) and Mike Cubbage (.311, 24 RBI, 7 SB) hit three apiece, but the Twins fall to New York, 10-5. Every member of the Yankees lineup has at least one hit, with five having a multi-hit game. Ed Figueroa (6-5, 2.30 ERA) struggles while giving up 13 hits in 7 1/3 innings, but does strike out nine on the day. Butch Wynegar (.277, 3 HR, 22 RBI) hits a solo home run for Minnesota in defeat. Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics Jason Thompson (.250, 6 HR, 35 RBI) of the Tigers hits a grand slam in the first inning to give Detroit a lead they would never give up in defeating the Athletics, 8-3. Tito Fuentes (.312, 10 RBI) has four hits with a double and Lou Whitaker hits a double and two singles, however starter Mark Fidrych (3.41 ERA) leaves the game with a back strain in the third inning. Pete LaCock (.244) hits a pair of doubles as part of a three hit day for Oakland. Chicago White Sox at Baltimore Orioles Chicago's Lance Johnson (.275, 4 HR, 15 RBI) goes 4-for-4 with a two-run home run to lead the White Sox to a 6-2 victory over Baltimore at Memorial Stadium. While a 108 ,inute rain delay chases the starters in the third inning, reliever Dave Frost (2-1, 2.49 ERA) gives up just three hits in the remaining 6 1/3 to get the win. Al Bumbry (.277) hits two doubles for the Orioles in defeat. Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners Toronto crushes the Mariners, 13-5 behind an 18-hit offensive assault. Al Woods (.293, 5 HR, 24 RBI, 4 SB) drives in four runs with three hits, including a two-run home run and Ron Fairly (.293, 11 HR, 36 RBI) homers, doubles and has two singles as the Blue Jays score nine runs in the final three innings and claim sole possession of the AL East lead. Alan Ashby (.279, 8 HR, 25 RBI) adds a two-run shot for Toronto in the ninth inning for a little salt in the wound. American League Scores ![]() National League News San Diego Padres at Pittsburgh Pirates Phil Garner (.307, 35 RBI) has four hits, including a game-winning, two-run single in the eighth inning to put the Pirates up for good 8-7 after San Diego takes the lead with a five-run seventh. Garner ends with three RBI while Ed Ott (.289, 19 RBI) doubles and triples to give Ed Whitson his second win in as many days. Dave Winfield (.296, 23 RBI) and Gene Tenace (.183, 23 RBI) each have three hits and Mike Ivie (.303, 5 HR, 26 RBI) hits a two-run home run in the loss. Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals Al Downing loads the bases in the bottom of the 12th inning on two singles and a walk then with two outs, gives up a game-winning base on balls to Tony Scott (5 RBI) on six pitches to give the Cards the 4-3 win. Buddy Bell (.315) ends the game with three hits for St. Louis while Reggie Smith (.281, 11 HR, 33 RBI) also has three hits, along with a solo home run and Bob Boone (.305, 5 HR, 26 RBI) also adds a solo shot for LA. Montreal Expos at Cincinnati Reds The Reds use the long ball as Joe Morgan (.217, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 37 SB) and Johnny Bench (.234, 6 HR, 37 RBI) hit back-to-back bombs to put four runs on the board in the first inning as Cincinnati beat the Expos, 5-3. Dan Driessen (.275, 8 HR, 18 RBI) follows one inning later with a solo shot of his own while Fred Norman (10-2, 2.49 ERA) goes 8.2 innings - allowing six hits and all three runs. San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs In a great pitching duel, Chicago's Brian Bonham (5-5, 3.62 ERA) allows just three hits and strikes out five in eight innings to lead the Cubs to a 2-1 win over San Francisco. Giants starter Ed Halicki (8-5, 3.65 ERA) only gives up eight hits, but an unearned run caused by his own fielding error of a Willie McCovey throw proves to be the deciding factor. McCovey (.299, 8 HR, 40 RBI) scores the only San Francisco run with a solo shot in the fifth inning. New York Mets at Houston Astros - Game One John Milner (.322, 4 HR, 21 RBI, 6 SB) has three hits on the day, but his two-run blast in the seventh inning puts the Mets up for good as they defeat Houston, 4-3. Jerry Koosman (5-6, 4.24 ERA) turns in a strong performance, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in eight innings. The loss breaks Houston's four-game winning streak. New York Mets at Houston Astros - Game Two Houston bats are shut down by Jon Matlack (1-9, 3.36 ERA), who gets his first win of the season by holding the Astros to six hits and one unearned run in the 4-1 victory, sweeping the Astros in the doubleheader in the process. Cesar Cedeno (.279) triples and singles for Houston as their lone bright spot. Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves The Braves dominate Philadelphia, 11-5, thanks to the hitting of Freddie Patek (.238, 15 RBI, 28 SB), who doubles twice on a three-hit day, and the pitching of Andy Messersmith (7-6, 3.18 ERA), who strikes out eight in eight innings, allowing six hits and four runs. Two errors by Tim McCarver (his 6th & 7th) and Garry Maddox (1st) turn into five unearned runs and forces Steve Carlton (6-5, 2.84 ERA) to the bench without completing the first inning. Jeff Burroughs (.224, 11 HR, 30 RBI) hits a solo home run for Atlanta while McCarver (.262, 5 HR, 20 RBI) and Davey Johnson (.264, 6 HR, 22 RBI) does the same for the Phillies. Sunday, June 12, 1977 For Montreal Expos fans, it was a bittersweet victory in game one of an afternoon doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds. On one hand there was the 4-2 victory over a division leader, thanks to a three-run fifth inning spurred by an RBI double in the fifth inning by Del Unser (.232, 8 RBI).On the other there was the crumpled heap at second base immediately thereafter. Unser stumbled and fell a few feet from second base, tried to stand and fell again before hopping the remainder of the distance and collapsing. "My heart sank when I saw him go down." Reds second baseman Joe Morgan said. "I heard a 'pop' and he just fell. I am truly amazed he made in to second base to be honest." Unfortunately, the prognosis from the Riverfront Stadium medical staff did not bring good news. The 32-year old center fielder suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon and will require at least 12 months of rest and rehabilitation - effectively ending his 1977 season and possibly part of his 1978 campaign as well. Unser has struggled so far this season, hitting just .232 with no home runs, seven runs batted in and 10 runs scored. It was defense and clubhouse leadership however, that will be missed the most. "You can't replace a guy like Del Unser." Montreal manager Dick Williams said afterward. "He provided a veteran leadership that this team sorely needs. Yeah he's disappointed but I told him to forget about it - the season is young. I am sure we'll be dissappointing alot of people by the end of it." Morgan (.227, 27 RBI) hit a double and his seventh home run of the season as part of a three hit day but the Reds fall to Montreal and pitcher Dan Schatzeder. Even though he allows ten hits - five for extra bases - Schatzeder gives up just two earned runs as he strikes out seven. Unser, Bert Campaneris (.178, 10 RBI) and Warren Cromartie (.288, 10 RBI) have key RBI hits in the three-run fifth inning. American League News Baltimore Orioles at Chicago White Sox Baltimore scores four runs in the final two innings - including two in the final frame - to sneak past the White Sox, 4-3 at Memorial Stadium. Pat Kelly (.245, 28 RBI) has a key RBI's in both innings, including the game-winning double in the ninth to score Kiko Garcia and Ross Grimsley (5-8, 6.75 ERA) allows three runs on seven hits in getting his second complete game of the season. Oscar Gamble (.251, 27 RBI) drives in three runs in the loss with a bases-clearing double in the third inning. Cleveland Indians at California Angels Cleveland gets back into the win column with a 4-2 victory over the Angels and Pat Dobson (2-4, 4.48 ERA) gains his second win of the year as a single by Johnny Grubb (.326, 20 RBI) followed by a double off the bat of Rico Carty (.294, 37 RBI) brings home the tying and go-ahead runs in the three-run eighth inning. Dobson holds the opposition to under three runs for only the second time in eight starts. Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners Toronto rookie Jim Clancy (9-0, 2.96 ERA) extends his undefeated streak to 12 games as he holds Seattle to just three hits over seven-plus innings to lead the Jays past the Mariners by a 6-2 score. Toronto get the hits when it matters as they hit .467 with runners in scoring position. Seattle 2B Julio Cruz (.227) has three of Seattle's four hits in the loss, their fifth in a row and seventh in their last eight games. Kansas City Royals at Milwaukee Brewers Milwaukee's Lary Sorensen (3-6, 4.55 ERA) may have been good, but Andy Hassler (6-2, 1.33 ERA) of the Royals was better as he holds the Brewers to just four hits through eight innings in Kansas City's 2-0 victory. For his part, Sorensen went the distance, allowing seven hits and two earned runs as Amos Otis (11 SB) and Willie Wilson (21 SB) use their speed to get a run in each of the first two innings. Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees Geoff Zahn (6-6, 3.69 ERA) of the Twins allows just five hits - one of which is a two run home run by New York's Chris Chambliss (.222, 5 HR, 22 RBI) - gaining his eighth complete game while leading Minnesota to a 7-2 win. Mike Cubbage (.316, 26 RBI) hits a pair of doubles to score two runs as Minnesota gains their fourth win in their last five games. The Yankees have lost three of their last four. Texas Rangers at Boston Red Sox Behind the hitting of Mike Hargrove (.276, 2 SB), who has a double and two singles while scoring twice, and Ken Henderson (.231, 4 HR, 17 RBI), who hits a two-run home run, Texas doubles up the Red Sox by a 8-4 score. Boston's Jim Rice (.241, 9 HR, 33 RBI) hits a solo home run and Steve Dillard (.271, 1 HR, 8 RBI) delivers a pinch-hit, three-run blast in defeat. Combined with the California loss, the win gives the Rangers sole possession of the AL West again. Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics After building a 6-1 lead, Oakland withstands a ferocious comeback to gain a 6-4 win over the Tigers. Wayne Gross (.228, 5 HR, 18 RBI) delivers a three run blast for the A's, leading them to only their third win in the month of June. Fernando Arroyo (0-1, 6.43 ERA) makes his first start in almost two years, allowing six runs (five earned) and eight hits through seven innings. Lou Whitaker (.270) collects four singles and rookie Steve Kemp (.274, 10 HR, 22 RBI) adds a two-run home run in the loss. American League Scores ![]() National League News Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals LA's Tommy John (3-6, 3.67 ERA) holds the Cardinals to four hits, but five walks helps contribute to four earned runs as St. Louis beats the Dodgers, 4-1. The point is moot however as St. Louis starter Larry Dierker (4-2, 3.88 ERA) holds the Dodgers to a single by Reggie Smith (.281) and throwing his first complete game of the season. Jeff Davanon (.267, 9 RBI) leads the offense with a three-RBI double in the fourth inning. Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves Led by a grand slam by catcher Joe Nolan (.270, 13 RBI), the Braves score seven runs in the third inning in a 14-5 rout over the Phillies. Nolan ends the day with three hits, along with Freddie Patek (.250, 17 RBI, 29 SB) who scores twice and drives in a pair. Terry Harmon (.309, 11 RBI) drives in three runs and Jay Johnstone (.289) goes 3-for-3 for Philadelphia in the loss. San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs Jack Clark (.312, 35 RBI) has a three hit day, but he saves his best for last as he sends a Willie Hernandez (3-2, 4.34 ERA) curveball to center field in the eighth inning for the deciding run in the 6-5 Giants win over the Cubs. Clark also scores three of the San Francisco's six runs while Bobby Murcer (.245, 19 RBI) delivers a double and two singles for Chicago in the loss. San Diego Padres at Pittsburgh Pirates - Game One Keyed by a three-run home run by Bill Robinson (.316, 4 HR, 21 RBI), Pittsburgh scores five runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game and beat the Padres, 6-2. Although not terribly pretty at times, Odell Jones (5-0, 1.69 ERA) wins his fifth straight start, allowing two runs and nine hits in 7 1/3 innings and Dave Parker (.329, 11 HR, 44 RBI) contributes three singles in the Pittsburgh win. Gary Sutherland (.215) has three base hits while Mike Ivie (.306, 6 HR, 27 RBI) homers for the second straight day. San Diego Padres at Pittsburgh Pirates - Game Two The Padres rattle off five consecutive singles capped by a two-RBI double by Bill Almon (.228, 26 RBI) in a six-run second inning to lead them to a 8-2 victory and a split in an afternoon doubleheader in Pittsburgh. Brent Strom (1-4, 5.95 ERA) gets his first win of the season, allowing eight hits and two runs in eight strong innings, Gene Richards (.280, 37 SB) steals a trio of bases and Merv Rettenmund (.287, 4 HR, 14 RBI) hits a solo home run in the San Diego win. Montreal Expos at Cincinnati Reds - Game Two Ex-Red Tony Perez (.241, 17 RBI) hits his second of two doubles to key a three-run eighth inning to give Montreal a 6-4 come from behind triumph and a doubleheader sweep of the division leading Reds. Sam Mejias (.318, 1 HR, 2 RBI) hits his first home run of the season and pitcher Dan Warthen (1-7, 5.54) gets his first win in 1977 after losing his first seven decisions. Dan Driessen (.285, 9 HR, 19 RBI) hits his third home run in three days for Cincinnati as the Reds see their division lead slip to 4.5 games. New York Mets at Houston Astros Houston salvages a series split with the Mets as a two-run double by Cliff Johnson (.248, 16 RBI) leads to a five-run, seventh inning and a 9-5 victory for Houston. New York starter Craig Swan (2-3, 3.22 ERA) survives just two innings, allowing four runs as the Astros make the most of every one of their 10 hits - scoring nine runs. Dave Kingman (.234, 27 RBI) drives in two runs with a pair of singles in defeat. National League Scores ![]() Standings ![]() Injuries

Monday, June 13, 1977 Thurman Munson (.274) collects four hits and scores two runs while George Zeber (.295, 23 RBI) drives in three to lead the Yankees offense, but it was the pitching of left-hander Ron Guidry that gave New York an 8-0 victory over the Royals.Guidry (10-2, 1.66 ERA) held Kansas City to just four hits in the shutout, throwing his seventh complete game of the season. He has kept opponents off of the scoreboard, limiting them to less than two earned runs in his last seven outings during which he is 5-1 with a 0.62 ERA. "I've been feeling really good out there." Guidry said after the game. "Pitches were going where I wanted and everything has been falling into place. I didn't even need Reggie this game." The Reggie in question was Reggie Jackson, who had the day off to rest. That was until the seventh inning when Jackson was used as a pinch runner for Zeber. Jackson then stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by Royals' catcher John Wathan. He would later score on a sacrifice fly by Marty Perez to extend his consecutive scoring streak to six games. "Without Reggie the score is 7-0." Jackson said by his locker. "Remember that." Jackson's opponents weren't so pleased with his tactics - including Kansas City manager Whitey Herzog. "Up seven runs in the seventh inning and stealing second? That is pretty bush - but we shouldn't be in that position in the first place. We'll remember this game that is for sure." Jackson played shortstop for two innings after coming in as a pinch-runner in the seventh and recorded an assist in his only chance. Jimmy Wynn (.232) collected two hits starting in place of Reggie - hitting a double in the fifth inning. Amos Otis (.238) has two of the four Kansas City hits, including a double and Bob Molinaro continues to struggle as of late for the Royals, hitting just .130 since June 4th. American League News Texas Rangers at Cleveland Indians The Rangers rack up 22 hits in a win against the Tribe, with Sandy Alomar (.467, 1 RBI) gaining four hits and Dave May (.221, 10 RBI) and Toby Harrah (.268, 40 RBI) each delivering three in a 13-7 Texas victory. Harrah also scores three times and Claudell Washington (.286, 42 RBI) drives in three, including a two-run home run blast in the ninth. Of the 18 starters on the two teams, only Cleveland's Charlie Spikes fails to get at least one hit. Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox Oscar Gamble (.269, 29 RBI) puts on a show at Fenway Park as he goes a perfect 5-for-5 in Chicago's 7-1 win over the Red Sox. Chet Lemon (.213) delivers three hits of his own - including two doubles - while Ken Kravec (3-3, 3.08 ERA) allows seven hits and one earned run over 7.2 innings. Butch Hobson (.223) hits a single, double and triple for Boston in the loss - their ninth in their last 11 games. American League Scores ![]() National League News Philadelphia Phillies at Cincinnati Reds After a May in which he went 6-0 with a 2.06 ERA, Wayne Twitchell (7-2, 3.20 ERA) struggles in his third straight start, giving up seven runs in in four innings in a 12-6 loss to the Reds. Cesar Geronimo (.211, 16 RBI) drives in four runs on three hits, Ed Armbrister (.267) has a trio of singles and Johnny Bench (.230, 7 HR, 39 RBI) scores three times - including a two-run home run - to pace the Cincinnati offense. Pete Rose (.254, 2 HR, 27 RBI, 9 SB) also adds a two-run shot for the Reds to give the Phillies their 10th loss in their last 14 games. Greg Luzinski (.301, 8 HR, 34 RBI) hits a solo home run, Terry Harmon (.309, 2 HR, 14 RBI) hits a two-run shot and Jerry Martin (.273) has three singles for Philadelphia in the loss. New York Mets at Atlanta Braves Atlanta manages only four hits, but turns them into four runs and a 4-2 victory over the Mets. Rod Gilbreath (.229, 20 RBI) hits a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and Dick Ruthven holds New York to five hits and two earned runs while striking out four over eight innings to take the win. John Milner (.321, 5 HR, 22 RBI) scores the only score for the Mets with a solo home run. Montreal Expos at Houston Astros Houston's Joe Ferguson (.197. 21 RBI), Bob Watson (.285, 46 RBI) and Julio Gonzalez each hit RBI doubles in the six-run eighth inning to lead the Astros to an 8-3 win in the Astrodome. I just checked the April 9 transactions ...
"Brewers: C Ron Hodges claimed off waivers from New York and placed on the active roster." "Cardinals: MR Ron Hodges claimed off waivers from Los Angeles and placed on the active roster." Now how are the odds of two players with an identical name being claimed off waivers on the same day by two different teams
