Washington Senators
![]() 87-67, 3rd Place Overview Perhaps times are a'changing. The Senators dominated the early years of the American League but ever since the Great War they have been perpetual bridesmaids. The previous four years had seen a stretch where they couldn't even manage to win more games than they lost. Last year though, they put in a solid showing with a combination of power hitting and good front-line pitching that could, if a few things break their way, oust the Chicago White Sox for rulership of the Junior Circuit once more. One thing that made the season especially fulfilling for Nats fans is that the team started off the year so, so bad. Through April they were 3-12 and as late as the morning of May 4 they were staring at last place and a 4-14 record. From there to the rest of the season they went on quite a tear, pausing only in August when injuries and the dog days held them to 14 victories in 27 tries. This year, a slightly retooled lineup will hopefully be just the thing that gets them out of the gate quickly rather than on life support. Pitching Todd Davis looked like a sure shot to win 20 on July 31, when he sat with a 15-3 record and a 3.12 ERA. Then he proceeded to rattle of 5 consecutive losses, finally breaking his downward streak with a 6-5 victory over the lowly Browns. Inconsistency has been a bugbear for Todd Davis throughout his career. Word from the clubhouse is that Davis, who considers himself the consummate political junkie, has a habit of attending various Congressional hearings and missing throwing sessions as a result. Last August his bad run coincided with a scandal surrounding Louisiana Senator Huey Long, which took up much of the time of this paper's politics bureau and, apparently, Davis' as well. Behind Davis, Sung-yong Yi is nothing if not consistent. He has posted a record exactly one win better than average in each of the last 4 seasons. Granted that in 1932 that record was 2-1; he missed most of that year due to injury. Still, he is the very definition of a league average pitcher, and the fact that the Nats think of him as a back of the rotation guy now is good news. The Young brothers, Tom and Dave, combined to create approximately one good season between the two of them. Dave, a converted reliever with a career 23-32 record, was actually having a great season before he felt a pop in his elbow and was shut down for the year. He's not expected back until May at the very earliest. Tom idolizes his older brother but could easy end up being the better pitcher of the two by the time he's done. Dan "Stringbean" MacNeil made a solid transition from the bullpen to the rotation last year. Several scouts around the league thought he was too thin to ever have the stamina required of a major league starter but those scouts were wrong. The midseason acquisition of Bob McKamey from the Philadelphia A's shored up a faltering bullpen and turned a weakness into a strength. Manager Dave Pringle had no compunctions against using McKamey early and often. The right-hander with the devastating sinker finished the season 3rd in the league in games pitched behind two former A's teammates. Pringle tried to hold the rest of the 'pen to mop-up duties, as they weren't all that good. The exception to that was Dan MacNeil, who was promoted to the rotation shortly after McKamey's arrival. He's a very smart baseball person as well, and although one pundit we know likes to proclaim that "being smart, don't always make you popular" (we're unsure about the added comma ourselves), the intelligence of Wardlow does seem to have translated into charisma. Norm Burnett also set career highs in every offensive category that counts as he found his new home much to his liking. The former prospect with the Boston Braves came to Washington in exchange for a couple of forgettable minor leaguers. Burnett himself looked like the odd man out of a tough first base situation there, but given the full-time duties he's proven to be a very good major league starter. Meanwhile, the continued inability of Ron King to show the stick that led him to 61 doubles and a .311 average between Newark and the major leagues in 1931 puzzles Washington brass. He was only adequate as a pinch-hitter last season and his days in Washington may be numbered. Code:

This was trumpeted as a cost-cutting move by the national press but the fact is that the Senators front office became increasingly disillusioned with Gregg's lack of forthrightness at the plate. Indeed, it seemed like there were times last year when he was more satisfied in taking four balls than slapping a clutch single when a clutch single was what was needed. It also seemed like the 1932 season he had made Gregg think he was an elite power hitter and he refused to shorten his swing when asked. Kagan's swing is as compact as swings come and he has all the plate discipline Gregg has as well. There will be a drop off on defense, primarily due to Kagan not being super adept at pulling the ball out of his glove to turn the double play, but not as much as some think. Bill Whitehouse took the second base job and had a fine season. Though technically not a rookie due to getting 210 at-bats last year and 132 the year before, Whitehouse would have finished 2nd in the AL in rookie hits and led in rookie HRs had he qualified. Third base is a position where the Nats would definitely like to upgrade. They'd put Woody Herndon into the lineup every daY hoping he'd find the swing that allowed him to hit .303 back in 1930 but he looked like a completely different player than the one who excited Boston Braves fans several years ago. Burl Frye would have played more at the position but missed a lot of time with injury; anyway, his best attribute is the fact that he can play every position on the field (including pitcher if they'd ask him to, which Washington has not), not that he's necessarily cut out to be a starting-quality third baseman. Most career pinch-hitters wilt when asked to play 9 innings a day but Tobias actually improved with more at-bats. Since he'd always been scouted as a guy not quite good enough as a hitter to play regularly in the outfield, his fielding was never an issue. He continued his clutch hitting ways as well, boosting his aberage 20 points in the last 3 innings of the game. Rick Whitehead is proof that clutch hitting matters more than statistics. Despite only hitting .254 and posting a sub-.300 on base percentage, the Overland Park, Kansas native set a new career high in homeruns and drove in 80 Nats while hitting cleanup all season long. Dedicated to self-improvement, Whitehead has reportedly used the science of weight lifting to massively increase his strength over the past couple years. Craig Werts does basically nothing but hit singles but he hits so many of them that he's still a highly effective hitter. Last year's .349 average was the highest he's hit at any level, possibly presaging a long and fruitful career to come. Code:

December Transactions
December 12, 1934
---------------------- The Giants traded Donald Spaeth (8-11, 4.02 for Kansas City) to the Pirates for MR Brian Turner (4-3, 2.72, 2 saves). The New York Giants traded Jack Salveson (middling pitcher prospect) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Leon Chagnon (top reliever). December 13, 1934 ----------------------- The Phillies traded CF Justin Boykins (.272, 24, 73) to the Giants for MR Menachem Begin (2-2, 3.10, 7 saves for Kansas City) and MR Vince Lombardi (3-4, 6.44, 1 save for Kansas City). The Philadelphia Phillies traded Kiddo Davis (starting CF) to the New York Giants for Joe Bowman (mid-level SP prospect). (I ended up throwing in two highly rated middle relievers instead because a. the Giants got Justin freaking Boykins in the deal, not Kiddo Davis, and b. they're middle relievers). The Cincinnati Reds purchased Johnny Mize from the St. Louis Cardinals. (I ignored this because Mize is going back to the Cards in April and also because I'm going to use the latter transaction to pry a prospect away from the Reds. December 14, 1934 ---------------------- The Giants traded 2B Britt Grim (.303, 4, 63) and $10,000 to the Reds for 3B Augusto Gonzales (.285, 8, 69) and SP Lee Bellamy (19-7, 4.51). The New York Giants traded Billy Myers (good, solid young middle infielder) and cash to the Cincinnati Reds for Mark Koenig (starting IFer) and Allyn Stout (4th starter type). December 19, 1934 --------------------- The Reds purchased OF Ken Flake (.208, 5, 24) from the Yankees for $5,000. The Cincinnati Reds purchased Samuel Byrd (4th OFer) from the New York Yankees. December 26, 1934 --------------------- The Dodgers traded OF King Reid (.249, 10, 57), MR Julian Wolfgang (0-1, 6.16), and $5,000 to the Sacramento Solons (PCL) in exchange for Aaron "Frenchy" Jones (.246, 0, 9 with Chicago (AL)). The Brooklyn Dodgers traded Johnny Frederick (4th OFer), Art Herring (not very good spot starter/middle reliever) and cash to Sacramento (PCL) for Frenchy Bordagaray (good starting OFer).

January transactions
January - undated
--------------------- The Cardinals sent Brendan Gowen (3-7, 5.53 at Buffalo) to the Browns in an unknown transaction. Bob Muncrief (very young pitching prospect) sent from the St. Louis Cardinals to the St. Louis Browns in an unknown transaction. January 2, 1935 ---------------------- The Dodgers selected C Harry DeRosier (.288, 9, 28) off waivers from the Cubs. The Brooklyn Dodgers selected Babe Phelps (young backup C) off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. January 4, 1935 ----------------------- The Cardinals purchased 1B Les Kent (.292, 4, 22 at New Jersey) from the Cubs. The St. Louis Cardinals purchased Don Hurst (backup 1B) from the Chicago Cubs. January 11, 1935 ----------------------- The Tigers purchased OF Bruce Struck (.299, 6, 33) from the Indians. The Detroit Tigers purchased Bob Seeds (backup 4C) from the Cleveland Indians. January 19, 1935 ----------------------- The Senators traded 1B Ron King (.254, 1, 17) and $5,000 to the Browns for P Eddie Gallaher (3-17, 4.05, 9 saves). The White Sox purchased C Eduardo Gonzales (.280, 2, 47) from the Browns. The Washington Senators traded Luke Sewell (veteran catcher) and cash to the St. Louis Browns for Bump Hadley (mediocre SP).(the Senators had no catching and the Browns just acquired another guy in the Rule V draft anyway so I changed it to problematic 1B Ron King). The Chicago White Sox purchased Luke Sewell (veteran catcher) from the St. Louis Browns. (not as symmetrical as real life but the same basic idea, I think) January 29, 1935 --------------------- The White Sox purchased 2B Dwight McLemore (.313, 3, 32 in the minors) from Kansas City (Giants affiliate). The Chicago White Sox purchased Glenn Wright (backup utility IF) from Kansas City (American Association).

February 26, 1935 ------------------- The Braves acquired C Phil Foster (.307, 7, 74) from the Yankees. The New York Yankees released Babe Ruth. The Boston Braves signed Babe Ruth as a free agent. (although technically transacted as a free agent signing, this was planned out well in advance by all parties.)

1935: Season Preview
Teams listed in order of expected finish: American League ------------------- Chicago White Sox Strengths: Bob Hinman (22-4, 2.44) and Bob Wolf (.368, 30, 113) are the best pitcher and hitter in the league, respectively. Weaknesses: Dillon Newkirk (.259, 9, 54) was disappointing at second last year and so they'll try Jefferson Davis (.284, 0, 24) there instead. Outlook at a Glance: They'll win their third straight pennant but it won't be easy. What to Watch For: Can Bob Weaver, who came from out of nowhere to hit .335 for this team, do it again? New York Yankees Strengths: Front-line pitching and a fast and powerful outfield. Weaknesses: Catching is suspect with "Tricky Dick" Nixon replacing Phil Foster. The team is starting a total unknown at second. Outlook at a Glance: The Yankees don't rebuild, they reload. What to Watch For: The fine play of William S Burroughs convinced the Yankees to give phenom Ed Farrel another year of seasoning in the minors. Boston Red Sox Strengths: Solid front-line pitching led by Al Monteith (22-10, 3.76) and Peter Brewer (24-12, 2.83). Great power-hitting middle of the order featuring Mark "Homer" Hanke (.364, 19, 118). Weaknesses: Bullpen looks untested, particularly with the loss of Tim Collins (2-4, 2.02, 2 saves) in spring training. Outlook at a Glance: Will contend for the pennant all year long. What to Watch For: The last time the Red Sox had a young talent at second base as good as Bob Coffee (.343, 8, 37), it was Earl Race, who slumped horribly and might not have a job in the majors. Can Coffee avoid a similar sophomore slump? Washington Senators Strengths: Power hitting, Bob McKamey in relief. Weaknesses: The starting rotation isn't strong enough for a contending team. Outlook at a Glance: A severe dark horse. What to Watch For: Rick Whitehead: most overrated or most underrated overrated player? You be the judge. Detroit Tigers Strengths: Lots of good young hitters, maybe too many if that's possible. Weaknesses: The rotation looks shaky and old. Outlook at a Glance: Will be exciting if not particularly good. What to Watch For: Mac Tillett (.328, 2, 43 for Columbus) will see his first major league pitcher since 1932 next week. Since then he's raked in the minors, but does he have a major league bat? Cleveland Indians Strengths: The starting pitching seems to be coming around. Weaknesses: The bullpen looks really bad. C Jeff Jorge and RF Keenan Thomas didn't perform well in spring training and lost their jobs to the old incumbents, Dave Echols and Alphonse Conway. Outlook at a Glance: This is a team that's a long ways off from contending. What to Watch For: Sun Ra could be a stopper in 5 years' time. Philadelphia Athletics Strengths: Several guys on this team can pop it for .300. Weaknesses: No power whatsoever. Outlook at a Glance: It's going to be a long season in Philly. What to Watch For: Phil Steven, a Rule V Draft pickup, hit .385 for Kansas City last season. St. Louis Browns Strengths: St. Louis is a great baseball town. Weaknesses: They have to be to show up to root for this team. Outlook at a Glance: This club could actually be worse than the one last year, which set new records for badness. What to Watch For: How long until manager Juan Avila gets fired? National League ------------------------ New York Giants Strengths: A monster outfield of Mason Taylor, Justin Boykins, and John Montague that could hit 100 homeruns between the three of them. Weaknesses: Rotation suddenly not so ominous with the loss of Fred Fleming until July. Outlook at a Glance: The Giants bought their way into a pennant. What to Watch For: Augusto Gonzales, recently acquired from the pennant-winning Reds, starts the season as a backup, Wha? Cincinnati Reds Strengths: Jay Calvin and Brad Box, duh. Fantastic starting pitching, even without Lee Bellamy (gone to the Giants). Weaknesses: With Britt Grim out until mid-May, second base is being manned by journeyman Rich Gartman. Also, Chris Laboy is their starting 3B. Outlook at a Glance: With the Giants retooling and the Cards surging, you can't just give this one to the two-time defending champs. What to Watch For: Will the money-saving moves the Reds made this offseason end up costing them the ultimate price? St. Louis Cardinals Strengths: Terrific pitching, Matt Oliver, some young potential phenoms. Weaknesses: A contending team really ought to have more proven commodities starting in the infield. Outlook at a Glance: Will go far but come up short. What to Watch For: 3B Fernando Chavez is the odds-on favorite for Rookie of the Year. Brooklyn Dodgers Strengths: Great, great hitting; Ken Lefebvre (.351, 25, 116) and Allen Vice (.348, 23, 118) as as good a 1-2 punch as any in the league. Weaknesses: The Dodgers open the season with the immortal Ed Lantz (.219, 7, 34 for the Cubs in '33) at shortstop. Outlook at a Glance: Will this be the Dodgers' year? Probably not but they'll be in the race until August. What to Watch For: Jorge Moreno (.313, 15, 50) hit 29 home runs between Baltimore and the big leagues. What does he do for an encore? Chicago Cubs Strengths: Earl Schell (.309, 11, 50) is a quality catcher. Weaknesses: After last year's debacle, Chicago is seeing if Charles Payne (.216, 4, 46) can repeat the performance. The front office are masochists. Outlook at a Glance: No hope whatsoever. What to Watch For: 19 year old Jerry Preston (0-0, 13.50) won the closer's job out of spring training. Philadelphia Phillies Strengths: They can still hit the ball, right? Right? Weaknesses: We don't get what they're trying to do. Go young or try to win one last time? Outlook at a Glance: At least the A's will also be bad. What to Watch For: RF Erik Conn is the oldest regular in the league. Boston Braves Strengths: Phil Foster (.307, 7, 74) is expected to add a lot of veteran leadership and punch to a largely punchless lineup. Weaknesses: Pretty much everything else. This team will have a ton of issues scoring runs until Bill Norman (.306, 23, 100) recuperates from a strained ribcage. Outlook at a Glance: Really, really bad. Might avoid 100 losses, though. What to Watch For: Tickets to see the Braves cost half of what they do over at Fenway Park! Pittsburgh Pirates Strengths: They can field nine players on any given day. Weaknesses: Everything. Calvin Party Celebrates Cincinnati Streak
ST LOUIS - A party honoring Jay Calvin's 3,000th hit turned out to be the celebration of a little two-game season-opening winning streak by the Cincinnati Reds. "It's a good celebration either way," Calvin said in the dressing room. Calvin made a spirited run at the 3,000 hit milestone with three hits in an 18-1 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates. "It's great to be winning," said Calvin, now batting an incredible .444. "We're getting our breaks and the pitching and hitting is looking fantastic." The party at the restaurant of Calvin and his business partner Julius (Biggie) Garagnini was set up before the four-game series with the Bucs. Calvin then needed three hits, but even that seemed like a tall order when facing the great Dave Brace and his proteges. Some 350 of Calvin's friends attended the party and the guests included US Senator Alvin Victor Donahey, Ohio Governor Martin Luther Davey, and Cincinnati mayor Russell Wilson. Calvin scratched out two hits in the first game of the series after hitting .375 during spring training. He announced the party was on whether he made it before the home fans or not. Jay admitted he bit at bad balls in his first two times at bat today. "Maybe I was trying to crowd something into two games that it took me fourteen years to accomplish," he said. Dave Brace, himself one of the winningest pitchers in baseball history, refused to give him anything to hit on Opening Day. For the first three at-bats, Calvin swung at pitches out of the strike zone and made three outs. The crowd at Forbes Field, which numbered 10,268, jeered him lustfully. The 31-year old Reds star occupies a unique place in the record books now that he's gotten that 3,000th hit. Four other players have reached that mark but none nearly as young as Calvin. It's interesting to note that Calvin, not a slugger, is like the majority of the entrants in that regard: only two members of the 3,000 hit club have more than 100 career home runs. Calvin has 42. The five are Chris Engstrom with 3,282, Joshua Cohen with 3,193, Harry Gasaway with 3,170, and Walter Carlson with 3,040.

This year both the White Sox and Reds, last year's World Series opponents, are performing well and may even win their respective divisions when all this is over. However, they have been at least partially outdone by some newer blood. First, the Senior Circuit. One of the newcomers is really an old guard, the New York Giants. As recently as 1933 they were the best team in the NL. So what happened last year? Two years removed from posting the best record in baseball history, the Jints looked positively aged. However, they did not stand pat. Far from it; in fact, one might say they looted their fellow contenders and are benefitting from the booty of Les Archie (.298, 3, 10) at second base, Justin Boykins (.161, 3, 14) in center, and Lee "The Dragon" Bellamy (2-1, 3.00) in the rotation. The Dodgers are more homegrown and also quite a lot more hitting-oriented. Paced by 1B Alan Vice's 21 runs batted in, Brooklyn has managed to score at least 30% more than every other team in the league save Cincinnati. With only 3 of 8 teams currently in double digits in power and the Pittsburgh Pirates currently homer-less, the Dodgers have hit 17 of them. In the American League the White Sox are on top but it's the Browns who are maybe the biggest story of them all. Okay, they're obviously not going to keep this up, but who expected them to be anywhere near .500 at any point in the season? Certainly not us. Still running on a shoestring budget, the Browns are winning thanks to a Rule V pick (catcher Rafael Sanchez), a man shipped in from the PCL (shortstop John "Swamp Fox" Knight), a busted prospect (left fielder Cliff Shoemake), and a reliever turned starter (Charlie Haynes). Several Marquee Players Start The Season Late ST LOUIS - The White Sox, Giants, and Phillies all received good news on the first of May: players each team looks at as an integral part of their lineup were cleared to start playing in games by the commissioner's office of athletic support. In Chicago, the White Sox have gotten used to George Echols missing time. Only 25 years of age, he missed 89 games over the past two seasons. He still has a job with the AL pennant holders because when he is healthy enough to play he is one of the very best hitters in baseball. Last season he hit .339 in 384 at-bats and stole 14 bases in 2/3rds of a season's worth of work, good for 4th in the AL as it was. Mason Taylor also returns to work after missing the first two weeks of the season with a broken wrist suffered from an errant pitch in spring training. That pitch was thrown by a Cincinnati Red, Irwin Corey (now in the minor leagues) and believe us when we say that this has not lessened the amount of bad blood between the two teams. Cincinnati manager Bob Reed insists it was an accident; of course, he would have done so even if he ordered himself, so that's not an entirely revealing statement. All we can say for sure is that the Giants, who had been without their #3 hitter, now have him back. Finally, the Phillies could probably use Otis Moyer more than anyone else could use one of their own. The Phillies have been scuffling at the plate this year, no doubt due in part because Moyer's fill-in Dale Sloat (formerly of the Giants) is hitting .233 with both on-base and slugging percentages below .300. It was hoped that Sloat could be the "super-sub" that Les Archie was for the Phightins last season; thus far, it does not appear he will fill those shoes. Stats and Scoreboard Code:

Dave Brace Wins 390th BROOKLYN - The fresh-faced college kid of 19 years ago, now the veteran Dave Brace, is the newest member of the most elite club in baseball - he is one of two men who can boast of 390 or more victories. The curve-balling right hander vaulted into the select circle yesterday by hurling the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-hit, 5-0 triumph over the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was Brace's 700th start and 705th game overall, an of those clashes he has won 390 and lost 230 for an overall percentage of .629. This season he is 4-1 with a 1.43 ERA over 44 innings, pitching effectively for the resurgent Pirates. He has struck out almost twice as many men (10) as he's walked (6).

Following the completion of a 3-game series victory over the hated Giants which concluded on the 2nd of the month, the Brooklyn Dodgers dropped 12 of their next 14 to dip all the way to .500 and knock themselves out of the chase. They did have to face the pitching-rich Cardinals and last year's pennant winning Reds during that stretch, but they also went 1-7 vs. the hapless Cubs and Pirates. Giants manager Brian Gerlach, always a man to rub it in, asked us a tough question before today's games. "Is Brooklyn still in the league? After we left Ebbetts Field on the 2nd, we haven't heard anything from them. Did they go down to the New York - Penn League?" We can't say that we have the answer to the sudden malaise, except that it's hit both the hitting and the pitching. It hasn't helped that ace catcher Jorge Moreno is out until early June with a high ankle sprain, but the Bums were bummy even before he suffered that injury. The Browns' fall was maybe a bit more expected but no less harsh. On May 2 they salvaged a 4 game split against the Tigers (who themselves are playing quite a bit worse than they're capable) and on the next day manufactured a close 3-2 win over the Yankees thanks to the excellent pitching of former Bronx hurler Gary Scurry. Since that time, they have won just one game. It didn't help that they lost their shortstop John Knight and catcher Rafael Sanchez 5 days later, but the pitching in particular has been just terrible. Scurry has since lost his place in the rotation, having allowed 16 earned runs in his last 13.1 innings pitched. Tim Maisonet's Scoreless Streak Hits 30 Innings BOSTON - This time last year, Tim Maisonet was losing in obscurity for the Cleveland Indians. Now he's one of the top pitchers in the league and is on a sizeable tear. Since allowing Athletics IF Dale van Tassel to score on a groundout in the 5th inning of May 1, Maisonet has not given up a single run, earned or otherwise. He's pitched three shutouts, yielding 21 hits, 6 walks, and 13 Ks in his last 3 outings. "It feels good, yeah," he told us. "Right now I don't have to think about much other than getting out there to pitch. The guys behind me are making plays and Pete [Brewer] and Al [Montieth] are locked in so I don't feel like I have to be too fine or anything, just go after guys." Ironically, going after hitters seems to have made Maisonet even harder to go yard against: he's given up just 1 homerun all season long. Saturday at the Park vs ![]() BOSTON - Bob "Hitman" Hinman was just too much for the Red Sox today. The ace of the White Sox pitching staff tossed his 4th shutout of the season, lowered his ERA to 0.73, and turned what was expected to be a good pitching matchup into an easy victory for his team. Hinman (6-1) yielded just 3 hits and zero walks against a Boston team that, despite its ranking as 2nd in the American League, has sometimes struggled to score runs. Peter Brewer (3-4) was good, too, but made a couple mistakes on a day when any mistake meant a loss. Bob Wolf (.316, 12 RBI) opened the scoring with his first home run of the season. Wolf, who led the American League last year with 30 longballs, was hurt in the early part of the year but still went 95 at-bats before finally finding the stands for the first time this year. Elsewhere in the League Yankees 9, Indians 0 - Carl Parham (6-1, 2.95) tossed his first shutout of the season and OF Gibran Waldron added his first homer of the year as the first-place Yankees blew out the cellar-dwelling Indians. Athletics, 3, Browns 1 - Pete Bell (5-1, 1.87) lifted the A's back to .500 with this victory over the fading St. Louis Browns. Paul Moore (1-1, 1.64) looked solid in his first outing with St. Louis after being purchased from the Yankees but his teammates again demonstrated issues scoring runs without their starting shortstop and catcher. Senators 4, Tigers 3 - Replacement third baseman Woody Herndon (.357, 0, 1) made his first RBI of the season a big one as he singled home 2B Bill Whitehouse (.242, 0, 7) in the bottom of the 9th to send Washington fans home happy. Elliott Hadlock (4-3, 1.98) had previously given up a game-tying 3-run homer in the top of the 9th to CF Gene Smyth (.372, 5, 14). Curtis Ballentine (2-5, 4.69) took the loss. Reds 9, Giants 2 - Lee "The Dragon" Bellamy (3-3, 3.52) couldn't get out of the 2nd inning against his former teammates and the Reds climbed to within half a game of the National League leading Giants. 1B Bob Leonhardt (.315, 1, 20) led the proceedings with 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 4 RBIs. New York got their only 2 runs in the game on the 9th and 10th homeruns by CF Justin Boykins (.197, 10, 28). Dodgers 10, Pirates 4 - Brooklyn stopped a 2-13 skid by bludgeoning Phil Cutshall (3-5, 5.21) and the Pittsburgh Pirates. RF Ken Lefebvre (.358, 5, 23) hit his 5th HR of the year in the 4th, and he and 2B Vincente Nunez (.333, 1, 22) co-led the game with 3 runs batted in. Cardinals 4, Braves 3 - An 8th inning double by SS Jim Clem (.321, 0, 13) broke a 3-3 deadlock and kept St. Louis on pace in the National League pennant race. Reliever Willis Morin earned his 7th loss of the season and now has a 7.32 ERA for his efforts this year. Phillies 10, Cubs 4 - The Phillies played cruel visitors, knocking Cubs starter Todd Lowman (3-1, 3.73) out of the box in the 4th inning to pick up their 9th win on the season. 1B Shane Levitt (.125, 2, 10) showed signs of breaking out of his season-long slump with 2 hits and 4 RBIs in 4 at-bats, including a home run.

Maisonet's Scoreless Streak Reaches 39 ![]() BOSTON - Who's the ace of the Red Sox staff again? Don't tell Peter Brewer or Al Monteith, but it could be Tim Maisonet (6-2, 1.06) now. The 26-year-old native of Staten Island, New York threw a seven-hitter against the defending AL champion Chicago White Sox to earn his 4th consecutive shutout and 39th consecutive scoreless inning overall. "I was really in sync with [catcher] Paulie [Washington]," said Maisonet, who walked nobody and struck out one batter. "But mostly I have to thank my infield." The Red Sox knocked former teammate Brian East (3-5, 5.62) out of the game in the 6th, nailing him for 9 runs on 9 hits in 5.1 innings. RF Dylan Thomas (.357, 1, 4) went 2 for 4 including the first home run of his young career.

Maisonet's Scoreless Streak Ends At 43 Innings BOSTON - All good things must come to an end, and so too did Boston Red Sox hurler Tim Maisonet's streak of consecutive scoreless innings. In the top of the 5th inning in today's game against the Detroit Tigers, Maisonet yielded a single to leadoff hitter P Steven Mudge (1-2, 4.07) and then a double to LF Bruce Struck (.294, 3, 15). Then he seemed to get the better of 3B and former teammate Kinnojo Maeda (.258, 4, 15), inducing him to swing at the first pitch and hit a weak ground ball to second. A little too weak, in fact, as by the time Bob Coffee was able to make a play on the ball Mudge had almost touched home plate. "Stuff happens, you know," said Maisonet after the game. "I'm just happy we pulled it out. My shoulder tightened up in the 8th, otherwise I would have finished it. I'm just glad we have Cooky [closer Bob Cooke] when that kind of thing happens." Maisonet improves to 7-2 with the win as he yielded 4 runs, 2 of them earned, in 7.2 innings of work. He has provided the Red Sox with a quality start every single time he's pitched this season except his first start on April 18th, when he failed to complete the requisite 6 innings. His win total ties him for first in the American League and is also pacing the Junior Circuit in earned run average with a 1.19 mark and shutouts with 4 (Bob "Hitman" Hinman of the Chicago White Sox also has "Chicagoed" 4 teams this year). With the victory, the Red Sox remain 3 1/2 games behind the 1st place New York Yankees with a record of 23-12.

Browns' Avila Gets the Ax ST LOUIS - Juan Avila, whose St. Louis Browns have stumbled to 15 wins and 24 losses after a promising start, was let go by his team in what management called "a mutual decision" earlier today. "I was brought in to turn the franchise around and I just didn't do it," said a dejected Avila. "Now I'm going to retire to my farm, I guess." The Browns were Avila's second major league team. He previously coached the Boston Red Sox to a pennant in 1922 only to be fire the next season after the team got off to a 35-48 start. With the Browns, he had an ugly record of 104 wins and 210 losses, including a 43-111 mark last season which is considered the worst of all time. The Browns will be run by bench coach Lou Hawkins while the team seeks a replacement.

Browns' New Manager Unveiled ST LOUIS - It may be the least prestigious managerial job in the major leagues, but hey. A job is a job, and Gary King is happy to have one. The 56 year old New York native, who has been coaching in the lower minor leagues the last few years, previously worked in the majors in Detroit, where from 1925 to 1929 he compiled a record of 273 victories and 401 losses. Lewis' hands were full from the beginning there; although Detroit had won 90 games the year previous and missed the World Series by 12 games, the club that Lewis inherited would lose 102 matches his first season. Following a solid 1926, where the Tigers finished 76-78, Lewis was never able to get back up to that level again and twin 96-loss years finally spelled his doom. It's worth noting, however, that it was only last year that the Tigers climbed above the .500 mark, so the real blame may lie with the front office in that instance. In any case, King is a man of many talents. A great deal of minor league experience has taught him to be patient with all players, young and old alike. If you were to give him the run of a team, he would probably stock it with 9 20 year olds. If there is an idiosyncrasy about him, it's that he seems to refuse to believe that the dead ball era ever ended. This is a man absolutely enamored with speed. He actually doesn't try to send guys on steals that much more often than your typical manager, but King is a disciple of the idea that speed kills in many different ways. It'll be interesting to see how this meshes with a Browns team that is floundering this May but who are still 2nd in the AL in steals with 17. Like a lot of managers nowadays, King believes in sticking with his starting pitchers until they've absolutely proven that they can't take it anymore. He'll be severely tested by the Browns' staff, particularly now that they sold their one good asset, Nick Nugent, to the Washington Senators to help meet payroll. His tastes in small-ball run towards the bunt and away from the hit and run. Tales from the lower leagues where he's been are filled with stories about how he won the day with a well-placed squeeze bunt.

Indians' Kono 2nd Manager To Lose Job In A Week WASHINGTON, DC - Kuni Kono was brought in to work his magic on a rough Cleveland Indians pitching staff. That never happened, and today he was released as manager. The Indians are just 7-19 for the month of May, including a run where they lost 14 out of 16 games. The pitching has actually been somewhat average, which can be looked on as a positive, but the hitting has been absolutely bereft: 7th in BA (.259), 7th in home runs (14), and dead last in walks (94) make it not hard to see how they're 7th in runs scored (151). Kono is replaced by Cleveland's AA manager at Minneapolis, Dwayne Turner. Turner has yet to manage in the majors but the long-time minor league vet has a career record of 598 wins and 619 losses at that level, including 55 wins and 49 losses with many of the same Cleveland farmhands that are currently on the major league roster. A disciple of fielding technique, Turner sometimes doesn't show patience with younger players, although when push comes to shove he is as likely if not moreso to pick a guy based on talent rather than reputation. One big difference between him and Kono is that unlike the now-former manager, Turner will leave a starter in until he is good and well tired. Kono tried to manufacture wins with his bullpen, which wasn't horrible strategy - the Indians do have a 3.49 'pen ERA so far this year - but was, according to sources close to the clubhouse, eroding the confidence of youngsters like Sun Ra.

The Reds knocked Bob Hazard out of the box after 5 innings, scoring 7 runs in that time, and eased their way into a 7-3 lead in front of 6,368 fans. "We're expecting to see a different variety of fan," said Reds owner Bill Simoneaux. "Cincinnati is a working class city and the fans can't always come out to see the games at 3 in the afternoon. That's why we're taking the lead in our support of labor and opening the gates up a bit later." When pressed on the phrase 'support of labor', Simoneaux paused at allowing the players to unionize and giving in to the 40-hour work week demanded by the umpires, but it's quite a nice start. The Reds weren't able to get any balls out in the cooler night air but still hammered Phillies pitchers for 11 hits in the game. SS Jay Calvin (.297, 2, 25) led the way with 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Meanwhile, rookie slabman Ron Bruce (3-3, 4.31) bewitched and befuddled the Phightin's over 8 innings, walking 8 but striking out 6 and committing only one really bad mistake, a 5th inning HR by RF Victor Ward (.321, 2, 23). "I'm going to have to work on seeing all of the plate if we're going to do this some more," he said. "That's okay because I like to work." Players of the Month Honors Awarded Keeton, Oliver Add More Trophies To Their Collection ]Yankees LF/1B Carter Keeton (.260, 9, 27) got off to a dreadful start this year but made up for lost time in May, hitting .308 with 8 home runs, 24 RBIs, and 26 runs scored. "I just started to see the ball a lot better," he told the Times in a recent interview. It's hard to imagine him hitting any worse to start the year. He hit .154 for the first month and was under the .200 line as late as the 11th of May, when he rode a 2-4 day to pull him up to .200 even. Last month he also dealt admirably with a midseason shakeup, as manager Dan Elder grew tired of Michael Taylor's lack of production (.254, 3, 11) and moved the Yankees star from left field to first base. Matt Oliver won his 4th Batter of the Month award in carrying the Cardinals throughout the month of May. He batted .350 with 7 HRs and 25 RBIs hitting out of the cleanup spot for the 1st place St. Louis Cardinals and playing some fine defense at first base as well. Oliver has toiled for several years on some also-ran St. Louis teams but this year looks like it might be different. We tried to reach Oliver for a quote but he was too busy taking extra batting practice. AL, NL Name Top Pitchers Maisonet, Key Win Awards With his amazing 43 game scoreless streak, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Tim Maisonet of the Boston Red Sox would earn his first even Pitcher of the Month award. He racked up a 7-1 record for the month, logging 68.2 innings pitched with an ERA of 1.31. He leads the American League in earned run average and wins and is 5th in the circuit in strikeouts with 36. The Reds' Lyndon Key had a great month at exactly the right time. With teammate Earl Crockett (6-1, 4.32) not up to his normal level of ability, Key stepped up his game, winning all 6 of his decisions and collecting a fine 1.74 ERA in 57 innings of work. On May 30, Key earned his 80th career victory with a win at St. Louis in which he pitched a complete game and gave up just 1 earned run. He had the "at-em" ball going, yielding just 1 walk and zero strikeouts. Youngsters Get Their Due Rookies of the Month LF Tom Walter (.322, 1, 19) never thought he'd get out of a deep Yankees farm system and in a sense he never did. Claimed off of waivers at the end of spring training by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Walter has shined in his first extended playing time in the big leagues. He hit .325 with a home run and 18 RBIs for the Bucs, who are defying preseason expectations by actually fielding a somewhat competitive team. If the American League Rookie of the Month is let down by a mid-month trade that moved him from the pennant contending Boston Red Sox to the lowly St. Louis Browns, he's not showing it. RF Dylan "Drunky" Thomas hit .366 with 3 home runs and 12 RBIs in May, including a .500 mark (9 hits in 18 at-bats) with his new team. "I'm glad to see the kid get recognized" said his former manager George Hubbard. "We just needed a fit elsewhere and you know, in this league you have to give up something to get something back." The Red Sox received minor league vet John "Swamp Fox" Knight (.359, 2, 20) in the deal. June transactions
June 2, 1935
------------------------- The Reds returned P Ron Bruce (3-3, 4.31) to the Yankees following previous purchase. The Cincinnati Reds returned Danny MacFayden (back of the rotation starter) to the New York Yankees following previous purchase. June 4, 1935 ------------------------- The Braves selected Ron Bruce (3-3, 4.31) off waivers from the Yankees. The White Sox purchased OF "Stone Cold" Carl Austin from the Reds. The Boston Braves selected Danny MacFayden off waivers from the New York Yankees. The Chicago White Sox purchased Tony Piet (platoon 2B/3B) from the Cincinnati Reds. (the last thing the Sox need is another IF. They do, however, need another OF and otherwise Austin fits the bill) June 9, 1935 ------------------------- The Pirates traded MR Vlad Treedom (0-0, 0.00) to the White Sox for 2B Dillon Newkirk (.348, 0, 6) The Pittsburgh Pirates traded Jack Salveson (reliever) to the Chicago White Sox for Bud Hafey (young backup OFer) (Newkirk is neither an OF nor particularly young but he fills the Bucs' needs and is sore at losing his starting job to Jefferson Davis besides). June 13, 1935 ------------------------- The Senators sent P Dave Fortenberry (1-1, 8.80 combined with PHN and WAS) to the Browns as part of a conditional deal. The Washington Senators sent Snipe Hansen (crappy reliever) to the St. Louis Browns as part of a conditional deal. June 17, 1935 ------------------------- The Indians purchased C Anthony Wideman (.338, 5, 38 with Albany) from the Senators. The Cleveland Indians purchased Eddie Phillips from the Washington Senators. June 19, 1935 ------------------------- The Reds purchased P Eddy Hobson (6-6, 2.92) from Los Angeles (PCL). The Cincinnati Reds purchased Emmett Nelson (top starter) from Los Angeles (PCL). June 21, 1935 ------------------------- The Reds purchased CF Dan Gravel (.263, 3, 21) from the Pirates. The Cincinnati Reds purchased Babe Herman from the Pittsburgh Pirates. June 22, 1935 ------------------------- The Giants purchased 2B Charlie Kirchner (.366, 2, 32 in the IL) from Montreal. The New York Giants purchased Jimmy Ripple (awesome OF) from Montreal (International). June 29, 1935 ------------------------- The Senators traded SS Carl Kagan (.290, 1, 23) to the Browns for SS Vernon Friedrich (.288, 5, 31). The Washington Senators traded Lyn Lary (starting SS) to the St. Louis Browns for Alan Strange (starting SS). June 30, 1935 ------------------------- The Red Sox purchased MR Jonah Hildebrand (0-1, 5.23) from the Athletics. The Boston Red Sox purchased Joe Cascarella (spot starter/MR) from the Philadelphia Athletics.

Is the combination of William S. Burroughs and Richard Nixon in the same lineup producing any chemistry problems for the Yankees? And is team management thinking about instituting a drug testing program for Burroughs?
