The (Improved) Finger Lakes League
I've always been fascinated with fictional baseball leagues, ever since my friends and I spent summer days making up teams and playing entire seasons with a wiffle ball and a plastic bat. I've tried several different times to create fictional universes in OOTP that I could use as the basis for dynasty stories, but it seems I've never hit on the right formula.
Sometimes I create leagues that are too big, and I bog down trying to write about them. This last time, I created one that was too small. A six-team league is easy to follow, but that format didn't allow for some of the features I've decided I really enjoy. Each time I've tried to create and write about a fictional league, I've learned a few things about what works best for me, and what doesn't; what I enjoy writing about, and what I find tedious. So, I've decided to try one more time. The Finger Lakes League has been re-created, new (and hopefully better) than before. Here's what it will be like:
I enjoy stats, so we'll see some statistical reports. I also enjoy writing newspaper stories, letters, and interviews, so we'll see some of those, too. I'm planning to make some of the league's fans, coaches, owners, etc. part of the story, too. However, the main story will be centered between the lines. If this works, this dynasty will be a long-running, thousand-post saga that will one day have 30,000 page views and bring all of us a lot of enjoyment. I hope to make the Finger Lakes League seem real enough that we'll all take rooting interests in the teams and their players, follow their careers, and remember them when they're retired and gone. And with that, it's back to 1905, and a cluster of eight small cities in upstate New York...

I hope you'll enjoy the league. You'll see some Rochester references in the league story--a couple of Rochester high schools and colleges, that sort of thing.

Meet the Finger Lakes League West
Here is a quick look at each of the eight Finger Lakes League teams as they prepare for the start of the 1905 season. First, the four clubs of the West Division:
BATAVIA BLUE JAYS Stadium: Dwyer Park Affiliates: LeRoy Jellos (AAA), Caledonia Scots (AA), Avon Bards (A) The Blue Jays will boast a hard-hitting lineup led by powerful 1B Hector Duran, who will undoubtedly contend for the home run title. C Jack Davis, the #3 overall pick in the inaugural draft, is one of the best young players in the league, a solid hitter and the league's best behind the dish. 2B Dean Miller and LF Ryan Tracy should also be worth watching. The Jays' staff is less impressive, led by vets Larry Blevins and Dylan Russell. Andres Miranda looks like a quality closer. This team will go as far as its bats take it. CANANDAIGUA CATS Stadium: Lakeside Park Affiliates: Waterloo Finches (AAA), Pittsford Canal Diggers (AA), Palmyra Prophets (A) Canandaigua had the first overall pick in the inaugural draft, and to nobody's surprise, the Cats chose RHP Armando "Wonder Boy" Ramirez. The 6'7" Cuban righthander, has the league's best stuff, including a mid-90s fastball, and at age 27 should be in his prime. Southpaw Darryl Riggs, another fireballer, will provide the Wonder Boy with top-flight support. Youngster Gene Stephens is one of the league's best pitching prospects. Italian import 2B Oliverio Ambrogliani, fleet CF Ramon Ramirez, and sweet-swinging 1B Terrence Barnett will be the offensive leaders for the Cats. 21-year-old LF Wally Blue looks like he'll develop into a power source one day. CORNING GLASSMAKERS Stadium: Corning Grounds Affiliates: Penn Yan Brawlers (AAA), Hammondsport Harpoons (AA), Painted Post Braves (A) A pair of southpaws, Chris Ratzlaff and Jose Rivera, give the Glassmakers two good arms at the top of their rotation, and their bullpen, led by closer Ryan Fisher, looks like a real asset. There's no room for young Jim Lee in their rotation yet, but his powerful left arm makes him one of the best mound prpspects in the league. With LF Stu Fields, CF Milo Deal, and RF Dylan Anderson, the Corning outfield will be well-manned. 3B Ray Boyer and SS Jeffrey Pearson also look like they'll contribute, both at bat and in the field. GENEVA GREEN SOX Stadium: McDonough Park Affiliates: Seneca Falls Sheepdogs (AAA), Lyons Lancers (AA), Newark Reds (A) Scot Mathis, Steve Tate, Mel Moore, and Esteban Martinez give the Green Sox a quartet of good starters, all age 26 and under. The Sox will be counting heavily on them, because with the exception of 2B Rob Heard, the batting order looks ordinary at best. Geneva went for youth in the inaugural draft, grabbing several intriguing prospects in the early rounds. Will fans be patient enough to wait for the deveopment of future stars like 3B Karl Lehman, 1B Brian Stephenson, and LF Fred White?

Meet the Finger Lakes League East
Now, the four clubs of the East Division:
AUBURN ATHLETICS Stadium: Seward Field Affiliates: Skaneateles Mohawks (AAA), Elbridge Eagles (AA), Weedsport Weeds (A) Why is 2B/3B Miguel Chavez called "Blur?" Is it because of his quick bat, his blazing speed, or the power of his throwing arm? That combination of talents made him the #2 pick in the inaugural draft. At age 24, look for him in the heart of the A's order for years. SS Ron Harris and CF Davis Bishop are among the other Auburn players to watch. Pitching might be the Athletics' weakness, with Pablo Ramirez the best of an ordinary lot of starters. RHP Alejandro Gomez, the team's best prospect, will be counted on to contribute in a hurry. ELMIRA CHIEFS Stadium: Eldridge Park Affiliates: Watkins Glen Bucks (AAA), Horseheads Stallions (AA), Montour Falls Pioneers (A) In RF Rich Everett and 3B Geoffrey Marks, the Chiefs possess two strong candidates for postseason honors. Everett's calling card is light-tower power, while Marks should hit .300 with ease. LF Julio Bruno might be 36 years old, but he has mastered the art of getting on base. Veteran Jose Encarnacion and youngster Jeremy Ramos lead the Chiefs rotation, but the team's best pitcher might well be closer Matt "Banjo" Wilson, who combines a 98 MPH fastball with pinpoint control. ITHACA OLYMPICS Stadium: Olympic Park Affiliates: Cortland Cougars (AAA), Trumansburg Terriers (AA), Moravia Missionaries (A) Is 21-year-old phenom Dusty Johnson ready to head a FLL rotation? The Olympics think so, and he'll be among those wearing the flashy royal-and-orange uniforms the Olympics have chosen. The bullpen, headed by lefties Dan Saunders and William Blair, should be among the league's best. SS Cipriano Torres and RF Frank Clark both hit for average and power, and at age 23, Clark is among the league's hottest young stars. Infielder Kokei Suzuki (age 19) is the centerpiece of a strong farm system. OSWEGO FOXES Stadium: Foxes Stadium Affiliates: Fulton Steamboats (AAA), Baldwinsville Ducks (AA), Wolcott Wolves (A) The Foxes gambled and took 19-year-old SS Greg Carruthers in the first round of the inaugural draft, and it looks like he'll be in the team's starting lineup on Opening Day. Carruthers possesses every tool except speed, and no young player in the league can claim his upside. LF Justin Lang is a surer bet for quick stardom; he's a polished hitter and a solid outfielder. Powerful righthanders Jeffrey Hennessey and Truman Johnson will anchor the Foxes rotation, with help from Jimmy Butler and closer Dan Jones, whose fearsome fastball has been clocked at 101 MPH.

I can't help but comment on a couple of things as a invested observer
![]() - Surprised you didn't use Braves as the Canandaigua nickname, just like real life. - Weedsport Weeds.....the obvious choice, but that's what makes it awesome. - I have family in Penn Yan, so I was interested to see where they'd end up in the structure too. Surprised they didn't go in Geneva, but those other towns you have for Geneva probably work better anyways. Penn Yan's kind of in no man's land as far as close affiliations. Could have even put them with Elmira, but same thing there. The Glen and Horseheads just work better and are even closer. - I wish you could have found a way to put Phelps in there. Most of my family grew up there! Overall, I think this is really awesome (but you knew that already). I'll definitely be paying close attention!

I have Canandaigua Academy in the high school feeder league. They got the Braves nickname. I couldn't resist Weedsport Weeds. The town is actually named for a family by that name, which makes it even cooler. I think I had Penn Yan matched up with three different teams before I got everything the way it finally ended up. I think I can find a way to work the town of Phelps into the story somehow. Maybe the local high school can be put into the feeder league, or I can feature the town in a storyline somewhere.

![]() The Wonder Boy's ratings are clearly better than any other pitcher in the league. That's no guarantee that he'll perform better than everyone else, but on paper, he looks like an uberace. Barnett and Ambrogliani will be fun to watch, too; Ambrogliani looks like the kind of guy who will get his uniform dirty every night, a real fan favorite. Good to have you on board, AZ. Hope you enjoy the "new look" Cats.

I grew up in Auburn, so you know who I'll be rooting for.
Nice to see Skaneateles as our farm team as there is a bit of a rivalry between the two cities.

norva13x: I'll make sure to provide some Newark news from time to time. For example, if there are some good prospects playing there, I'll mention them and update their progress.
YODA55: Miguel Chavez alone will make the A's fun to watch. He's a classic five-tool player, and he'll be a great face for the Auburn team. I suppose folks from Skaneateles might resent being a "minor league town" since Auburn made it to the big time, but Auburn is probably ten times the size of Skaneateles. Thanks for the comments! I hope you'll keep reading... June 21, 1905 STANDINGS OF THE CLUBS Code:
WEST W L PCT GB Canandaigua 43 30 .589 -- Batavia 41 32 .562 2 Geneva 41 32 .562 2 Corning 31 42 .425 12 EAST W L PCT GB Auburn 41 32 .562 -- Elmira 34 39 .466 7 Ithaca 34 39 .466 7 Oswego 27 46 .370 14 Riding the powerful right arms of Armando Ramirez and Darryl Riggs (9-5, 2.74, 112 K) and the potent bats of Oliviero Ambrogliani and Terrence Barnett (.376-8-37, 50 R), the Canandaigua Cats hold a narrow lead over the Batavia Blue Jays and the Geneva Green Sox. Batavia's slugging 1B Hector Duran and ace RHP Larry Blevins (10-2, 2.50) are enjoying good starts, while Geneva fans are cheering RHPs Scot Mathis (7-2, 2.81) and Mel Moore (11-6, 3.16) and 2B Rob Heard. Pablo Ramirez paces the surprisingly good Auburn pitching staff with 12 wins, and he's been named the East Division starter for today's All-Star Game. 2B Miguel Chavez and 1B Mike Holmes are the hitting stars for the first-place As. Down in Elmira, RF Rich Everett has turned out to be the slugger everyone expected him to be, slamming 20 home runs to lead the league by a wide margin. And Ithaca fans are keeping a close eye on SS Cipriano Torres, wondering if he'll heat up even more with the weather and end the season with a .400 batting average. The FLL's best will take to the field today at Lakeside Park in Canandaigua. Here are the lineups for the East and West Division teams: EAST DIVISION Cipriano Torres, Ithaca, SS (.394-2-20, .475 OBP) Frank Clark, Ithaca, CF (.275-7-30, 17 SB) Miguel Chavez, Auburn, 2B (.323-12-51, 25 SB) Rich Everett, Elmira, RF (.275-20-59) Mike Holmes, Auburn, 1B (.299-10-41) Geoffrey Marks, Elmira, 3B (.295-3-34, 42 R) Justin Lang, Oswego, LF (.284-7-23, 46 R) Tom Smith, Auburn, C (.227-9-37) Pablo Ramirez, Auburn, P (12-1, 2.93) WEST DIVISION Oliverio Ambrogiani, Canandaigua, 3B (.323-6-44, .429 OBP) Milo Deal, Corning, CF (.294-0-24, 46 R) Rob Heard, Geneva, 2B (.335-9-44) Hector Duran, Batavia, 1B (.308-13-40, .431 OBP) Ryan Tracy, Batavia, LF (.259-12-42) Dylan Anderson, Corning, RF (.259-8-32) Jeffrey Pearson, Corning, SS (.273-2-28, 43 R) Jack Davis, Batavia, C (.246-3-30) Armando Ramirez, Canandaigua, P (10-3, 1.85, 121:16 K:BB)

November 1, 1905
FINAL STANDINGS Code:
WEST W L PCT GB Canandaigua 92 62 .597 -- Batavia 80 74 .519 12 Geneva 80 74 .519 12 Corning 64 90 .416 28 EAST W L PCT GB Auburn 89 65 .578 -- Elmira 80 74 .519 9 Ithaca 78 76 .506 11 Oswego 53 101 .344 36 Canandaigua ace Armando Ramirez lived up to the challenge of being selected #1 in the inaugural draft, winning the pitchers' Triple Crown and, not surprisingly, the Outstanding Pitcher Award. The Wonder Boy went 24-5, posted a 1.70 ERA, and struck out 259 men--three more than teammate Darryl Riggs. Ramirez' dominance was also reflected in his 1.2 BB/9 IP ratio. The Cats were no slouches at bat, either. 1B Terrence Barnett won the batting title (.361-16-79, 109 R, .454 OBP), and 2B-3B Oliviero Ambrogiani hit .310, drove in 75 runs, and walked 100 times. 3B Lee Bradshaw (.266-16-107) caught fire during the second half, knocking in runs with remarkable regularity. CF Ramon Ramirez hit .273 with a fine .377 OBP and won the Rookie of the Year Award. Some experts were surprised that Batavia 1B Hector Duran won the Outstanding Hitter Award over Barnett. Duran's line: .328-22-93, 141 BB, .468 OBP. Larry Blevins won 19 games for the Blue Jays. Geneva 2B Rob Heard (.329-26-98) won the home run crown, as Elmira's Rich Everett battled injuries and went deep only four times after the All-Star break. Heard (.918) joined Duran (.994) and Barnett (.933) as the only Finger Lakes League hitters with an OPS of .900 or better. LHP Chris Ratzlaff (11-12, 2.51) and 1B Matt Miller (.279-10-79) were the best players on a struggling Corning Glassmakers team. In the East, Auburn's pitching continued to be solid, and their offense was as good as everyone predicted. The result was a division championship. Lefty Tomas Cruz (18-10) pitched very well during the second half, joining Pablo Ramirez (19-11, 3.26) to give the Athletics a good one-two punch. 2B Miguel Chavez (.330/.390/.493, 19 HR, 87 RBI, 104 R, 54 SB) was the league's most dynamic player, while 1B Mike Holmes (.310-20-87) also swung a big stick. And no team came close to Auburn's derring-do on the basepaths, as Chavez, 3B Wilfred Howell (69 steals) and LF Manuel Ramos (44) accounted for 167 of the team's 275 steals. No other FLL club stole more than 125. Besides Rich Everett, with his 24 bombs and 100 RBI, Elmira got good production from 1B John Perkins (.307-16-117), the league's RBI leader, and LF Julio Bruno (.304-2-55, 132 BB, .446 OBP, 101 R), one of the FLL's most popular players. Matt Wilson saved 38 games for the Chiefs. Ithaca's Tony Goodwin (21-12, 3.01) was the East's only 20-game winner. After flirting with .400 during May and June, Olympics SS Cipriano Torres finished with a strong .351 mark and got on base 43% of the time. The play of LF Justin Lang (.319-16-66, .419 OBP) and 19-year-old SS Greg Carruthers (.276, and a Gold Glove) were the only bright spots in a dismal 1905 season in Oswego. RHP Jeffrey Hennessey, an All-Star, was hit hard during the second half, and ended up with 18 losses and a 3.86 ERA that was almost a full run higher than it had been in June. The first Championship Series turned out to be a thrilling one, won by the Auburn Athletics in seven games. Three of the games were decided by a single run, and only one by more than two.

SS Kokei Suzuki is listed at #5 on BA's Top 100. He'll be 20 on Opening Day, and he hit .262-2-27 in 90 games with Moravia (A) in 1905 He projects as a high-average hitter with good speed, and could develop very good power for a shortstop. His weakness is defense; he's barely adequate at short and might need to change positions. He'll probably open 1906 at Trumansburg (AA). Righthander Dusty Johnson, BA's #7 prospect, spent the entire '05 season with Ithaca, going 14-17 with a 3.62 ERA. He'll turn 23 midway through the '06 season. Like many young pitchers, Dusty struggled with his control, walking 106 men in 241 innings, but his 172 strikeouts were evidence of his outstanding stuff. He throws a low-90s fastball, a change, and a slider, and he's working on a split-finger pitch. Matt "Bulldog" Boggs was the fourth player selected in the June 1905 draft. Now, he's BA's #8 prospect. A third baseman, Boggs hit .344 and slugged .689 for Batavia High School, and his 10 home runs were second most among all prep players. He hit three home runs against Victor High on May 12. With Moravia, Matt hit .321 with only two homers, but his power potential remains legitimate; he is without a doubt the most promising teenaged slugger in the league. Matt will probably begin the '06 season back in Moravia, but he could move up quickly if he hits well. At #36 on the prospect list is switch-hitting LF Juan Gomez, 22, who came to the Olympics out of Keuka College in the 2nd round of the draft. Gomez doesn't look like he'll be as devastating a slugger as Boggs, but he should be good for 15-20 homers a year in his prime. Juan struggled as a rookie pro, however, hitting only .142 for Moravia. He'll undoubtedly return to the Missionaries in 1906. Out of Korea comes OF Ik-jun Ch'ae, BA's #39 prospect. He didn't start for SUNY-Cortland as a senior, hitting .274 in 62 AB, but after the Olympics took him in the fourth round of the draft, he reported immediately to Ithaca. There, he demonstrated considerable versatility, playing all three outfield positions, as well as second, third, short, and even behind the plate. He hit .235 with two home runs in 162 AB. Ch'ae, 22, might be as good as he'll ever be, but he looks like he'll have a job as a super-utility player for the Olympics in 1906.

1905 Miscellania
The Skaneateles Mohawks won the AAA championship, sweeping the LeRoy Jellos in the playoff round. the Mohawks also swept the two most coveted league awards. 3B Tony Pugh (.311-14-83, 44 2B) was named the league's Outstanding Hitter, with RHP Paul Morse (19-5, 2.65, 165 K) winning the Outstanding Pitcher prize. Pugh, 22, is considered a better prospect than Morse, 23. The Baldwinsville Ducks were clearly the class of the AA circuit, going 80-40 during the regular season and beating the Caledonia Scots, 3 games to 1, in the playoffs. 1B Jorge Garcia, 22, was only with the Ducks until late July, when Oswego traded him to Corning. In only 99 games at AA, Garcia hit .370, slugged .603, belted 18 homers, drove in 77 runs, and walked 62 times. That was good enough for an Outstanding Hitter Award. Baldwinsville RHP Jose Navarro (14-4, 2.28, 100 K) won the AA Outstanding Pitcher Award. All three Batavia minor league affiliates made the playoffs, and the Avon Bards gave the organization a championship when they won the Class A playoffs over the Moravia Missionaries, 3 games to 0. Palmyra LF Joe Carter (.357-5-50, .952 OPS in 79 games) won the league's Outstanding Hitter Award; he was promoted to Class AA, where he hit .330 with Pittsford. Moravia's Luis Rojas (17-7, 1.84, 1.02 WHIP) took home the league's Outstanding Pitcher prize. Both Carter and Rojas were veterans in their mid-twenties, and neither is considered a prospect. The following ten players are, however, considered prospects. They're Baseball America's top ten players of promise, with their ages on Opening Day, 1906. Position Players 1. Greg Carruthers, SS, Oswego, age 20. 2. Jack Davis, C, Canandaigua, age 24. 3. Roger Bowers, SS, Corning, age 23. 4. Kokei Suzuki, SS, Ithaca, age 20. 5. Brian Stevenson, 1B, Geneva, age 23. Carruthers, Davis, and Suzuki you've met already. Bowers was drafted out of St. John Fisher College by the Glassmakers with the #3 pick last June. He's got a sweet lefty stroke with some pop, runs well, and fields adequately. Stevenson hit 23 homers, splitting the season between Geneva and AAA Seneca Falls. Pitchers 1. Gene Stephens, RHP, Canandaigua, age 20. 2. Dusty Johnson, RHP, Ithaca, age 22. 3. Enrique Medina, RHP, Geneva, age 23. 4. Frank Vance, RHP, Geneva, age 19. 5. Chris Ervin, RHP, Oswego, age 20. You've heard of DJ already. Stephens won nine games for the Cats after a May call-up; he's got a great arm but his control is spotty. Medina's stuff is even better, and his control is sharper, so I think his upside is greater than Stephens' is. Vance, a Penn Yan Academy product, was the Green Sox' #1 pick in June. He'll refine his skills at Class A Newark again in '06. Ervin won 9 games, posted a 3.07 ERA, and struck out 170 men in 196 innings for AAA Fulton. He's probably good enough for the Foxes rotation already. Collegiate Champion: Canisius (defeated Syracuse in playoffs, 3-2) Outstanding Hitter: Stanley Martin, Keuka Outstanding Pitcher: Jorge Perez, Canisius High School Champion: Christian Brothers Academy (defeated Fairport High School) Outstanding Hitter: Jorge Gonzales, Victor High School Outstanding Pitcher: Fernando Diaz, Christian Brothers Academy
