Saturday April 20,1985 AT ![]() Anaheim Stadium,Anaheim,Ca. In a wild slugfest between the Mariners and Angels,the Angels got a huge day from DH Reggie Jackson who went 3 for 4 with a home run,2 RBI and a run scored as well as home runs from Craig Gerber and Ruppert Jones, but it wasn't enough to defeat the visiting Mariners thanks to big days from LF Phil Bradley(2 for 4 2B,HR, 3RBI 3 R),RF Ivan Calderon(2 for 4 2B 2 RBI) and 1B Alvin Davis, who's 2 run double in the top of the 9th gave Seattle the 8-6 victory.Mariners starting pitcher Mike Moore(2-1) pitched 8 servicable innings, allowing 10 hits and 6 earned runs to get the win, while closer Karl Best pitched a perfect 9th to get the save. Today's Injuries Braves starting pitcher Joe Johnson developed a sore upper back while pitching in today's game against the Astros, he's not expected to miss a start News And Notes The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to send 30 year old 1B Len Matusak to the San Diego Padres in exchange for 28 year old relief pitcher Mark Thurmond.Matusak is a career .237 hitter with 16 home runs, while Thurmond has a lifetime record of 21-12 with an ERA of 2.80 The Houston Astros have acquired the services of 27 year old 1B Pete O'Brien from the Texas Rangers in exchange for 27 year old pitcher Jeff Calhoun The San Francisco Giants have traded 28 year old RF Ron Roenicke to the Chicago White Sox getting 27 year old relief pitcher Juan Agosto in return. Sunday April 21,1985 At ![]() Yankee Stadium,The Bronx,NY With the score tied at 5-5 after five and a half innings of play, the Yankees got a clutch two out RBI double from LF Ken Griffey,which scored Don Baylor and put the Yanks in front 6-5 after six.From there, it was all pitching, as Yankee starter Ed Whitson(1-1) and closer Dave Righetti combined to hold Cleveland scoreless the rest of the way, giving the Yankees the 6-5 victory. For Whitson it was his first victory of the season, while Righetti picked up his 4th save. Today's Injuries Dodgers LF R.J. Reynolds suffered a broken hamate bone in his right wrist while diving to make a play in today's 9-3 loss to San Diego. He's expected to be out for 4 months. MLB News And Notes 19 year old Oakland A's starting pitcher Jose Rijo(2-1) was absolutely overpowering today in Oakland's 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Rijo, allowed 1 run on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 15 in 7 and a third innings to pick up his 2nd victory of the season. MLB Weekly Wrap-Up
Players Of The Week His hard work and hustle paid off this week. The hard working and hard playing Don Slaught of the Texas Rangers was rewarded with the American League player of the week honors, thanks to a week in which he batted .529(9 for 17) with 2 home runs and 6 RBI. Atlanta Braves LF Terry Harper had a big week at the plate this week, so big in fact that he's been named the National League's player of the week. harber hit the ball at a .533 clip (8 for 15) with 2 home runs and 4 RBI News And Notes In a trade that has all of Toronto up in arms, the Toronto Blue Jays have traded promising young players George Bell and Kelly Gruber to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for 28 year old pitcher Mike LaCoss. In other trade news, the Minnesota Twins have acquired the services of 29 year old relief pitcher Rod Scurry from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for 32 year old 3B Roy Smalley. MLB Game Of The Day
Monday April 22,1985 AT ![]() Three Rivers Stadium,Pittsburgh,Pa. Dominant for most of today's game, the Pittsburgh Pirates took a 5-2 lead into the top of the 9th inning, thanks to a big day by CF Marvelle Wynne(2 for 5 2 RBI, SB) as well as a solid pitching performance by starter Jose Deleon(1-1) who went 8 strong, allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs, with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts.In the 9th though, the Cubs struck back. Facing Bucs closer Kent Tekulve the Cubbies went single, walk, RBI single, single, RBI sac fly, to make it a 5-4 game, with runners on first and second and one out. Tekulve though, showing the calm of a pitcher in his 11th year, got it together just in time, and retired the final two batters of the game on a routine ground out and a pop up, preserving Pittsburgh's 5-4 victory and collecting his 3rd save of the season. Today's Injuries Expos starting pitcher Joe Hesketh developed a mild calf strain forcing him out of today's victory over the Phillies, but luckily the injury is said to be very minor and he's not expected to miss a start. Oakland A's CF Dwayne Murphy twisted his ankle on a steal attempt in today's game against the Angels.He'll be out for about 4 days. I like the day by day approach,I really do and after thinking about it,I'm gonna stick to the same format.It's been working well and most of all I like it.

Tuesday April 23,1985 AT ![]() Olympic Stadium,Montreal,Que. Despite blowing leads on three separate occasions,the Phillies were finally able to put the Montreal Expos away,thanks to Ozzie Virgil's RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th inning that scored 1B Mike Schmidt and gave Philadelphia the eventual 8-7 victory.Virgil,who's been struggling mightily so far,finally began to show signs of life,going 1 for 4 with a homer and 2 RBI,but the main cog in the Phils offense today,was SS Luis Aguayo, who was 3 for 5 with a grand slam,4 RBI and two runs scored.On the hill,relief pitcher Dave Shipanoff(1-0) pitched two and a third innings of relief to get the win,while Don Carman commected the save.Jeff Reardon(0-1) took the loss for Montreal. Today's Injuries Brewers SS Ernest Riles suffered a setback in his recovery from a fractured right thumb,and will miss another week or two. Blue Jays Rf Lou Thornton has an intestinal virus and will be out for about 4 days. Royals RF Pat Sheridan will be out for about 5 days with a bruised hand,suffered when he was hit by a pitched ball in today's game. Trailing 4-0 entering the top of the 7th,the Royals got a two run single from Darryl Motley followed by a two run homer by catcher Jim Sundberg to tie the game at 4-4,but a Willie Upshaw RBI single in the bottom of the inning spelled doom for KC thanks to a shutdown 8th inning by Jays starter Doyle Alexander(1-2) followed by more of the same in the 9th by closer Bill Caudill who earned his 2nd save of the year as Toronto defeated Kansas City 5-4. Today's Injuries Brewers reliever Rick Waits strained his shoulder in today's loss to the White Sox and will miss about 3 days. Pirates LF Steve Kemp sprained his ankle on a slide attempt in today's game against the Cubs,and will be out of the lineup for 5 days. Royals RF Pat Sheridan,trying to play with a bruised right hand suffered yesterday,strained his right oblique today and is now on the shelf for 2 weeks. Thursday April 25,1985 AT ![]() Yankee Stadium,Bronx,NY Thanks to 8 shutout innings tossed by starting pitcher Dennis Rasmussen,along with a solo homer from Don Baylor,an RBI single from Andre Robertson and a two run homer by Victor Mata the New York Yankees headed into the 9th inning of today's game against the Red Sox in total command,leading the ballgame 4-0.In the 9th though,Rasmussen began to falter,going fly out,single,single,fly out before allowing a 3 run bomb to Bill Buckner which made it a 4-3 game with two outs in the 9th as Dave Righetti entered the game in relief of Rasmussen.Righetti,facing Boston SS Glenn Hoffman unleashed a 1-1 fastball that Hoffman crushed,sending into the bullpen in left center field and tying the game at 4-4, forcing extra innings where in the bottom of the 10th,Yankees 3B Mike Pagliarulo lashed a clean single to right off of Sox reliever Bob Stanley,scoring Dave Winfield and giving New York the 5-4 victory,moving them into 2nd place in the AL East. Today's Injuries Cincinnati Reds closer Ted Power will be out for at least the next year,due to compression of the radial nerve in his elbow which will require surgery. Cardinals starting pitcher Kurt Kepshire has suffered a level 3 sprain of the AC joint in his right shoulder and will require surgery.He's expected to be out for 5 months. Orioles pitcher Storm Davis has a bad case of the flu,and is expected to be out of action for about 4 days. Friday April 26,1985 AT ![]() Candlestick Park,San Francisco,Ca. In today's battle between two bitter division rivals,the San Francisco Giants used the long ball to sink the visiting Reds 2-1 here at Candlestick Park.Entering the 6th inning still scoreless,the Giants got on the board first thanks to a Chile Davis solo homer off of Reds starter Joe Price making it 1-0 San Francisco.The lead was short lived however,as the Reds tied the game on a Pete Rose RBI single making it 1-1 after 7.The game would remain deadlocked at one into the bottom of the 10th,where Giants LF Rob Deer led off the inning with a solo blast to left off of Reds reliever John Stupor(0-1),giving San Francisco the 2-1 victory. Today's Injuries None MLB News And Notes Thanks to another big day from Harold Baines,who went 3 for 5 with 2 homers,3 RBI and 2 runs scored the White Sox defeated the Yankeees 5-4 for their 7th win in a row,keeping them within a game and a half of the Mariners who are also on a 7 game win streak. Saturday April 27,1985 AT ![]() Memorial Stadium,Baltimore,Md. In today's game against the Cleveland Indians,the Baltimore Orioles came out swinging today,thanks to a 3 run homer in the bottom of the first inning by 3B Wayne Gross,quickly giving the Orioles a 3-0 lead.In the 2nd,the Tribe fought back,getting a solo homer from Tony Bernazard and an RBI single from Andre Thornton to make it a 3-2 ballgame.In the 3rd,the Orioles big bats struck again,when LF Mike Young went deep for the 5th time this season,giving Baltimore a 4-2 lead after four innings of play.The Indians though,continued to battle,getting an RBI double by Julio Franco in the 4th and then an RBI double by Brett Butler in the 7th,tying the game at 4-4 after seven.The game would remain tied until the bottom of the 9th,where with two outs and nobody on,Orioles 1B Eddie Murray,facing Indians reliever Jamie Easterly(0-1) took a first pitch fastball and deposited it deep into the stands in left field,giving Baltimore a stunning 5-4 victory. Today's Injuries Tigers LF Johnny Grubb suffered a grade II oblique strain in today's game against Milwaukee and will be out for about a month Royals 1B Dane Iorge severely sprained a finger on his right hand and will be out for 2-3 weeks The Toronto Blue Jays will be without star CF Lloyd Moseby who has been diagnosed with patellar tendinitis and will be on the shelf for 6 weeks. Sunday April 28,1985 AT ![]() Dodger Stadium,Los Angeles,Ca. On a picture perfect day here at Chavez Ravine,Dodgers starter Orel Hershiser(3-0) was simple too much for the visiting Padres to handle.Hershiser,logged 8 shutout innings,allowing 6 hits and 0 walks while striking out 9 in the Dodgers 3-0 victory.Closer Tom Niedenfuer provided more of the same,pitching a scoreless 9th to earn his 6th save of the year.Offensively,the Dodgers Pedro Guerrero provided the fireworks courtesy of a two run homer in the 5th, CF Ken Landreaux added some insurance with an RBI single in the 8th to close out the day's scoring.With the win,the Dodgers improve their record to an impressive 14-6,good enough for first place in the competitive NL West.For San Diego,starting pitcher Lamar Hoyt(1-2) went the distance in the loss. Today's Injuries Cubs 1B Richie Hebner has developed tennis elbow,and will be out of action for about two weeks. Royals 2B Frank White bruised his right wrist in today's game against Boston and will be out for a game or two. Brewers CF Dion James pulled a back muscle in today's game and will be out for about 6 days. MLB News And Notes Nelson Simmons' 3 run homer in the top of the 10th sparked the Tigers to a 6-4 victory over division rival Milwaukee ti improve their record to an MLB best 14-3.
